Wow! Honestly the best donut I've ever tasted in my life. The quality is just insane: the taste of the dough, the fluffy texture, and incredible flavors of the frosting/toppings/fillings. From the simple vanilla glaze with sprinkles to the unique seasonal rhubarb meringue, I was simply blown away. The use of sourdough is unique, but I didn't think they tasted sourdough-y if that makes sense. Magic Donuts has a regular customer for life now! I've had Magic Donuts in my bookmarks for the longestttt time so I was excited to finally try their famed sourdough donuts! Parking is super easy around the area, which is a rarity in SF. Shop is bright and airy, with the most adorable pastel color scheme. I ordered two of their milk chocolate donuts ($5 each), a key lime meringue donut ($6), a blueberry & lime donut ($5), and a caramel apple donut ($6). Donuts are on the pricier side, but the presentation and use of high quality ingredients makes up for it. The sourdough donuts themselves aren't nearly as sweet as standard donuts and have a soft, bouncy texture. The milk chocolate donut was absolutely decadent. Upon first bite, you can immediately tell this donut was topped with real melted milk chocolate. This was levels above a typical chocolate glazed donut. The flakey sea salt garnished on top balanced out the sweetness nicely. Although I will say that I found the richness of the chocolate to clash slightly with the tanginess of the sourdough donut. The key lime meringue donut had a super tart key lime filling and was topped with fluffy meringue. Definitely the most eye catching of the donuts I picked up. But the key lime filling was a bit too punchy and sour for my liking. The glaze on the blueberry & lime donut had a potent and fresh blueberry flavor that went well with the lime zest sprinkled on top. The caramel apple donut was my favorite. The caramelized apple filling paired with the cream cheese frosting and graham cracker crumbs was almost like eating an apple pie + cheesecake fusion but as a donut! After finishing up brunch nearby, my friend and I headed over to Magic Donuts & Coffee for a sweet treat. Unsurprisingly, the offerings at 2 PM were quite slim - the only flavors left were chocolate hazelnut and cinnamon sugar old fashioned. Fortunately, old fashioned are my favorite types of donuts, so my friend and I ordered one of each to share. It was a nice day, so we sat at one of the tables outside, which is nestled between apartment buildings, so it's shielded from the street. I have to say I wasn't a fan of the chocolate hazelnut donut. While the texture of the old fashioned donut was spot-on - slightly crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside - the chocolate hazelnut flavor had almost a burnt flavor. The cinnamon sugar donut, on the other hand, was more my cup of tea. It tasted like a churro but with the denser texture of an old-fashioned donut. Drove by Magic Donuts and Coffee and immediately turned around because of how cute the store looked. I had the maple pecan donut and a cappuccino. The donut was amazing. I don't usually order cream filled donuts but it sounded to intriguing. So happy I ordered it because it was a delicious yeast donut with a thick maple pecan cream center. The cream wasn't overwhelming and reminded me of a Chinese pastry because it was so well balanced without being overwhelming or too sweet. I am so disappointed in how a donut shop can have such bad coffee. I'm beyond traumatized from the cup of "coffee" mind you about $5.46 for a small. The employee there filled it to the very very brim of the cup without asking if I want room for cream or milk. The taste was bad, like someone added hot water on top of whatever was brewed. Cute donut shop, love the interior and their logo designs. The sourdough donuts themselves were unique: a thick bread-like texture but a good balance of airy and not too dense. That said i do wish the glaze were a bit thicker to compensate for the increased ratio of donut dough - it could be a bit sweeter. The blueberry lime flavor was good, more acidic than sweet. The last time I went, three weeks ago, on a Sunday, I walked in, but four donuts and a small cup of decaf coffee. Paid with it by card and never paid attention until I was in my car. $48... $48! I love trying new donut spots, and I'm dog sitting in the area so here I am. I came around 7:45am Saturday morning. Parking was easy, and there was no one inside as far as customers go. The decor is super cute. The tiling is nice, and they've got a few art pieces up. There were 2 employees, and 1 helped me. She answered the few questions I had. I got the campfire because it was pretty, and the glazed because the campfire was going to be too much even though it was pretty lol I got a dog treat too, since this dog has been sad his owners gone. Stopped by Magic Donuts this morning and, while I enjoyed the donut, the sticker shock really woke me up. My friend and I each got a small coffee and one donut snd the check was over $20.00. If you're a fan of sourdough & donuts then you need to try Magic Donuts! These are donuts made with sourdough starter - this yields a chewier, less sweet, and denser/more bready donut. Because of the chewiness, this leaned more towards a sweet bread than a dessert. It also felt a lot more filling than your average yeast donut. There are so many different picture perfect flavors to choose from. I ordered a huge variety to bring to work and after trying most of the different donut flavors, I can confidently say that their apple pie donut is my absolute favorite. It has layers of apple flavored cream and soft apples. It tasted even better than an apple pie. The inside of the establishment is pink and bright. It felt really clean inside & there's actually a lot of street parking available in this area. They also have outdoor tables set up & a huge park right across the street. Been wanting to try these donuts for awhile -- not only are they INCREDIBLY instagrammable, but the sourdough spin on a donut makes them an obvious homage to SF. We picked up half a dozen for a party and they were an instant hit -- our friends loved the novelty and unique flavors (such as "blueberry and lime" and "campfire s'mores"), and they were big enough to cut into smaller bites for everyone to try. The chewy texture leans less towards a typical baked dessert and more towards regular bread, which actually balances out the intensely sweet and decadent toppings really well. The first notable downside is the price -- I get that the donuts are high quality, but nearly $40 for a half-dozen donuts made this a one-time experience for us. We also picked up a coffee to go, and despite the cute as hell espresso machine, the coffee was below average. I just can't see myself motivated to go out of my to come back. The second downside was the presence of flies inside the donut case -- we came in the afternoon and understand that flies can get in even the cleanest of spaces, but these big flies were landing all over the donuts. We had to ask the server to switch out a strawberry donut when she grabbed one that the flies had been on, and she didn't seem too happy about the request. Service is great, I've been twice and happen to get the same cashier both times (and she remembered me :) Such a clean, cute shop with modern yet retro vibes. There are many flavors to choose from but I recommend going earlier in the day when there is more variety. The later in the day, the less donuts/choices. The first time I came by I tried the strawberries and cream donut. Amazing! What stood out was that it was topped not filled with the strawberries and cream but the sourdough donut was the perfect compliment to all the flavors. Fun place to get creative donuts in SF's Portero Hill. Best to come with family and friends you can cut into quarters and share with, keeping the price per person down while tasting more varieties. We ordered the Glazed, Apple Cheesecake, and Key Lime. I actually liked the Glazed the best as it was less sweet and really enjoyed the sourdough-based chew to the dough. Come to think of it, this is probably the best glazed donut I've ever had. The other flavor were good though sweeter, with the apple filling and key lime flavor as very nice touches. I love a good bougie donut and Magic definitely delivers. Over the top creations with a clear focus on both quality and appearance. The place was designed to be instagramable. Every detail, display, neon light. Staff was very kind and let my 6 year old pick the exact donut she wanted. Pulling out the entire tray and letting her point out the "right" one. I had the maple pecan and it was delicious. Almost closer to a bread like pastry than the usual donut textures I'm used to. The cream in the middle was delicious. The sourdough taste and chew does come out and cuts against the sweetness of the glaze and makes for such an interesting combo. Such a unique bite! These are not your typical donuts. These are sourdough 'nuts paired with a sweet glaze and toppings. Sounds like a weird combination, but Magic donuts know how to do it right. Their presentation of the donuts are topnotch and they have some fun flavaflavs. The donuts are a nice size, too. Shareable yes, but you don't have to if you don't want. I was able to try a couple of their flavors and the most memorable were the milk chocolate with crisscross drizzle, matcha, and oreo. My favorite thus far has been the milk chocolate with sea salt. The sour from the dough calmed down the sweetness of the chocolate and the flaky sea salt was a nice touch. The dough was a bit crisp and soft. Not dense whatsoever. The taste blew me away; it was so good. The cookies and cream was just as scrumdiddlyumptious. Sadly, I was only able to get half of the donut because a coworker took the other piece, but luckily my half included the oreo cookie piece on top. It had a filling on the inside which wasn't too sweet but thick and creamy. I believe it was cream cheese? Anyways, Mmm, it was good indeed. If you love oreos, you'll love this donut. Rarely, you'll come across a shop that sells matcha donuts and Magic has it. I don't know if it's offered daily or if it's in rotation but I would get this quite often if I could. I love matcha and their matcha donut is nomworthy. You can actually taste the matcha in the glaze. A must-try for the matcha lovers! Overall, Magic donuts knows what's up when it comes to sourdough donuts. It's a nice change from the regular cakey doughs you can get anywhere. It might be nice to have both the firmness and a more pronounced sourdough flavor. But I also understand that not everyone may prefer that flavor...? Today, my daughter got the following: Blueberry and Lime - The blueberry icing is darker than usual, but the salesperson shared why; sorry I forgot why. I was not able to taste any lime with this donut at all. I think it was just the zest. We would have preferred a stronger flavor. Campfire - Other than the unique marshmallow on top, the below donut was nothing special and it did not stand out. And for the $$ we spent, not sure if it was of good value.
