Was in the Alabaster area and have eaten at other Jim N Nicks so thought we would stop in. The cashier was extremely pleasant. She explained how the restaurant changed to a "Fast Casual" style. Where we order at the counter, get our own drinks and they bring our food. We actually prefer this because we can get drinks without waiting for someone to bring refills. I ordered the Loaded Baked Potato with smoked chicken. It was large and filling. My husband ordered Beef Brisket with Cole Slaw and Onion Rings. We also had Cheese Biscuits. You just don't eat at Jim N Nicks without eating the Cheese Biscuits. Everything came out fast, hot and was delicious. We were checked on at our table by staff multiple times so it still had that sit down restaurant feeling. So overall a wonderful experience. read more

I met my husband here for lunch on a workday. They didn't offer quick lunch service but we were still in and out in 45 minutes. The service was fast but also friendly and attentive. My water glass was never empty. I had the lunch portion grilled chicken plate. It was tasty and healthy. There were two bottles of BBQ sauce on the table and I grabbed one and squirted it on my plate. It's a good thing I like spicy food because it was habanero BBQ sauce. Decent Barbecue, Despite the Restaurant's Being a Chain While visiting friends in nearby Helena, AL, we chose the Holiday Inn Express in Alabaster for its location. While there were multiple places to eat nearby, we wanted to try the barbecue from the nearby Jim 'n Nick's Bar-B-Q. Ordinarily, we would not have gone to a chain restaurant, preferring locally owned places to eat. However, due to its proximity to our hotel and our need to focus on the purpose of our visit (seeing an ill friend), rather than seeking out choice dining spots, we went to Jim 'N Nick's - and were pleasantly surprised by the flavor of the food, the friendly service, and the reasonable prices. We liked the food and service so much that we went there three times over the course of two days. In fact, the staff remembered that we had come at lunch, so manager sent over complimentary desserts for our dinner that same evening. Each meal (lunch and dinner) comes with a basket of cheese biscuits, along with honey butter. I had to restrain myself from gobbling down too many of these delicious biscuits, to save room for the main courses. We got to try the pork shoulder and the baby-back ribs, along with a variety of side dishes. While I would have liked a bit more smokiness in the barbecuing of the meat, the flavor of meat dishes was very good, with a couple of sauces to add to suit one's taste. The sides dishes were decent, but I found the home-made BBQ chips to be only slightly better than potato chips bought in a grocery store. The mac-and-cheese was quite good, but very, very rich. Other sides that we tried (collard greens, coleslaw, potato salad, etc.) were fine. For dessert, we liked the coconut cream pie, the lemon pie, and the banana pudding. I found the peanut better pie to cloyingly sweet. All-in-all, though, we enjoyed our meals at Jim 'n Nick's Bar-B-Q in Alabaster, AL. Would definitely recommend: -wing appetizer (hot) -- your quintessential starter -chips and ranch -- it's always better with the ranch IMO -seven plates of the biscuits (we literally go and demolish plates of the biscuits before we get our main meal) -my go to is the pulled pork plate with two sides (it's straight forward and always extremely filling) Service is quick and friendly and we always appreciate eating at a local place. Sunday lunch with the family. I had the grilled chicken plate. The smoked chicken breast was super moist and the accompanying salad was delicious. My only complaint is that I asked for no cucumber and it had cucumber slices--not many though. I was feeling a little guilty for not getting one of the more traditional BBQ dishes, but I'm glad I didn't. The cheese biscuits were good as well. We've been going to this Jim and nicks barbecue spot for the past six years and 90% of the time we always have good experiences. The 10% of the time is usually due to win they were out of a ton of food items, either because they were extremely busier than anticipated or they did not order enough food on their trucks. So it's pretty frustrating when you go to get birthday dinner with your family and they end up not having chicken, bread, butter, and most of the other items. Having said that, I'm still giving them a five star based on the experience is nine out of the 10 times. Just make sure you ask the server ASAP if they have most things available because if you don't, you'll be sitting there for 10 minutes before they actually tell you they're out of the food. read more

I hate the changes. We usually go to the location on 280 but were in Alabaster so thought we'd try that. First time at this location since it changed from table service to fast casual. We were surprised to wait a long time in a very short line just to place our order. My wife ordered a glass of wine and after seeing a lady at the bar pour it and waiting for 10 min I approached and asked if we were supposed to pick it up or would someone be bringing it to the table? I genuinely didn't know how it worked. She barked rudely at me that she had "3 other drinks to make" and would bring it when she could. All she had to say was "I'll bring it to your table in just a moment sir". If you want anything else after your initial order you'll have to go stand in line again. My salad came out with my chicken and side so they were cold by the time I got to them. Someone that worked there said all the new stores are this format and they're switching over existing ones as well. Jim N Nick's has been a favorite of mine for years. Stopped by today for my usual Piggy Express with sweet tea. What a shocker when she handed me the bill! What used to cost $8.75 jumped to $10.60 for the same stuff. I spotted a $.31 charge for the to-go box, which should have been in a paper sack to start with. I asked the staff person why the price increase? "Because of the virus". What has the virus got to do with it? "We had to lay off half of the staff and the dining room is not open". My better half called and asked me to bring her a BBQ sandwich & fries, so I went to her fav. Went thru drive thru & ordered inside chopped, sauce on side, cut in half, w/fries. Paid the $10.43 picked up the sack & left. When I got home and handed my wife heh food she said "thank you, but did you have to sit on the bag?" Ordered Mr. Jim;s Combo platter to get a taste of all things meat, I would guess that each meat, except the sausage was small portion of 1/3 but not exceeding 1/2 pound. Sides were too generous portion sized as the table of 7 people could not get through 1/2 of what was served. Since travelling could not take leftovers, which was a waste. Biscuits were sweet and cheesy - Classic Pulled Pork - moist and tender, serviceable for a sandwich - Pulled Chicken moist and tasty by itself. Alabama Sauce was a nice option to add. - Beef Brisket - gray, dry and sliced almost as thin as deli meats. Bark was non-existent with no smokiness or even salt/pepper taste. - Turkey Breast - moist and tender, small portion - Pork Hot Links - good taste, enhanced with sauces, -Spare and Baby Back Ribs - both were dry and heavily heavily salted. Sauce used helped reduce, but the taste but still too overpoweringly salty. For the price would have liked to see a little more BBQ and less sides. At $18-$20 for a 2 meat combo plate they are charging 20% higher than the better craft BBQ places in TX. read more

SO recently I visited this restaurant, and I ordered the smoked ribeye. I was very unsatisfied, my steak was entirely fat. I do. Ot exaggerate that at all there was no meat just fat. So the owner just happened to be there and he and the manager were very compassionate and they took care of me. I applied that night to work there and the manager megan was so rude to me today. I informed them that my girlfriend was waiting in the hot car and she basically shouted at me in front of customers and then she didn't even I interview me. I'm from the North West, so I had never had authentic Southern BBQ before until today. It was SO good. The pulled pork was succulent. And I loved the mini cheddar biscuits with the honey butter free appetizer we got before our meal. There was no wait time, we were able to chose between sitting inside or outside, and it had a welcoming atmosphere. Our waiter was great- friendly, prompt, and made sure we enjoyed our food. This is a chain BBQ restaurant that still seems quite popular in the Birmingham area. Their spicy BBQ sauce is probably the most heat I've ever had in a BBQ sauce and that was probably my favorite thing about this place. The complementary cheese biscuits with butter were a nice lagniappe. The brisket and turkey were alright but didn't approach what you would get in the Texas Hill Country. They have a decent selection of sides and have a nice bar that included some local Birmingham beers. For the Birmingham area I guess this is some of the best BBQ they have. read more

Update: More than disappointed. We entered the restaurant and were immediately disappointed. Even though the restaurant was not busy, we had to wait to be seated because they wanted us to sit in a specific booth. Them, when I was about to sit down, I realized that there was food all over the seats on both sides. With the hostess watching, we cleaned our own booth with our hands. If that wasn't bad enough, our waitress never introduced herself and made it very clear that she didn't want to wait on us. She brought our rolls out quickly, which we were happy about, until we realized that they were old and stale. My barbecue was literally awful. Again, it came out very quickly. That should have been a sign. It was all burnt (please see the picture.) Obviously, management is not a big deal in alabaster. Hopefully, we will find a place that WANTS to offer good service and food. What a waste of forty dollars. January 5, 2017 This place is a splurge but definitely worth it. We really liked our pulled pork sandwiches, and we always like the rolls. They are delicious. The only thing keeping us from going more often is the price--I would say you pay about $20 per person, and that can be a little steep going regularly. Our service is always good, although the last time, they were slammed and short handed , and we NEVER got a sweet tea refill. If you don't like loud and rambunctious, this is NOT the place for you. We're pretty regular visitors to Jim n Nick's... The service is usually pretty spot on, ask for Leah or Kayela and they'll take excellent care of you. The food is predictably good. The meats are tender and flavorful, the sauces are just what the meat needs, the cheese biscuits are worth the extra calories (try them with the regular BBQ sauce or ask for the honey butter). If you go on Tuesdays, you're in for a treat with Taco Tuesday! BBQ tacos are a taste treat for sure... Try each variety! Their pies are terrific too... Donna was the epitome of southern hospitality, giving our family amazing customer service. Despite it being a chain, the food tastes fresh and homemade, like at a mom and pop bbq place. The pork and brisket are fabulous and cooked to perfection. I'm always up for BBQ but don't let the name of the restaurant fool you. They have way more that just BBQ. This particular visit I had the Dave Burger. It is a really solid burger. I also went with their onion rings over the fries. They are huge and extremely awesome. My wife got some random Black Bean salad that she claimed was great but I did not try it so I can't attest to it's apparent greatness. The cheese biscuits they offer to start are really good as well. The mashed potatoes were cold, the baby back ribs I could not eat, so hard I could not cut the meat off with my knife. The brisket was acceptable.
