Jim's West competes solidly for the title of Best Cheesesteak Joint in Phialdephia. Larry's, Max's, Dalessandro's and Chubby's...it doesn't matter! Jim's West is guaranteed to give you a heavy cheesesteak at a good deal. Real Amoroso rolls, traditionally wrapped, they don't skimp on any ingredients, they have Kosher Hoagies, and the Steak is even Halal!! Alhamdulillah! You can't top that apart from variance of luck. They're the only place to have the Banana Pudding Special (best banana pudding too), they have great Strawberry Lemonade with real strawberries in it!....and if that's not enough to sweeten the pot, they're the only place that offers the maximum variety of Cheese Options. They have Cooper Sharp sure, but they also have Pepperjack like a couple of the others do, and are the *only* cheesesteak joint to still offer Swiss since the pandemic. Cheese Whiz: Hit Or Myth is one of my favorite newspaper articles because Whiz is trash and American is the Philadelphia Style default. But at Jim's, whiz is different. It doesn't make your cheesesteak taste like macaroni, or plastic. Whatever whiz they're using is more like cheddar and enhances the flavor of the meat much like Provolone does. You can get spinach and broccoli on your Chicken Cheesesteaks, I love this kind of variety and I'm already planning to try this when it's time fur my next visit. If you don't want the steak chopped finely, just ask them not to. If you want it cooked as lightly as possible, just tell them! They are nice here and they will hook you up! Otherwise they are very consistent, they virtually never give overcooked steak. You can see how closely they pay attention to the grill as they cook and they actively toss away burnt bits of steak. I went here twice a day for over a week straight and got steaks from each cook at least once!! I believe in this joint. It has real history behind it as the 2nd oldest cheesesteak joint in Philadelphia, the first in West Philadelphia period. "New Ownership" but literally all the best staff from the old ownership. Hate that I skipped the one closest to me (South) to try this one because I've heard great things about them. My cheesesteak was overcooked. The condiments did not help. Total disappointment. I don't think I would have tried here until someone recommended it yesterday. I live close by and usually go further for a cheesesteak. I tried this place today and I absolutely loved it. All the ingredients were fresh. Not one single bad piece of meat. It was the perfect spice. A little messy but I also put mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, mushrooms, grilled onions & cooper sharp cheese. So I made a mess in my car and on my clothes but idc. The bun was soft. Kinda too soft actually probably why it spilled out and I ate it as soon as I got to the car but would I eat this again. Yeah for sure. This was my first time at this establishment! When I walked in I didn't see where you order from. If your from the neighborhood I guess you already know. An older lady took my order which seem like It bother her to do so! She told the cook what i wanted but he never made it. Honestly speaking, on the path less travelled, Jim's West Steaks is a great find. I had recently read that Jim's West was an experiencing a rebirth under new leadership so off I went. This cheesesteak was L-O-A-D-E-D! After placing my order the chef got started on my order and seeing how much steak she loaded onto the grill, it was definitely impressive. She just grabbed a handful of steak over her head to the grill and started cooking asap. I asked for two steaks, one with provolone, mushrooms, and onions, the other with wiz, both came filled to the brim with steak. Definitely go for a generous sprinkle of salt and pepper at the end for better flavor, and surprisingly, for me anyway, I was asked distinctly if I wanted mayo, so I said why not. A dash of ketchup was the final addon to this Philly treat. The final verdict, tender chopped juicy steak, no gristle, not too cheesy (which I prefer), nicely cooked and not overdone. I definitely rank this is as a Philly best. For about $12-$14 a steak this was not just tasty but economical as well. Now, this was a bit off the beaten path for sure and the neighborhood, well, get your steak and go. There isn't much eat in space anyway. Newly reopened after few years of closured, Jim West Steak will never disappoint you. My husband is a native Philadelphia and he always talked about this place that he used to go. Since we will be town for few days, we didn't waste our times and we drove straight from the airport to Jim West Steak and wow we loved it and my husband had a blast from the past! This place is very clean, beautiful interior in black and white and the staffs were very friendly. I definitely recommend this place for quick delicious Philly cheese steak , although the line might be long to get your order due to the narrow room, but it's worth it. It has always been a staple for my family to treat us when we visited native family members just 6blocks away. My steak was pretty good and they mostly made it the way I wanted it. The whiz wasn't as liquid as I have come to expect at the Springfield and the old West Philly locations, and I think it being more of a spread detracted from the sandwich. The service was fine and efficient enough. Be wary of the sandwich and pudding special - do the math! I got it and it worked out for me; my husband got it on his vegetarian steak (which I'm so glad we don't have to go all the way to Springfield for, now), but he actually ended up paying more with the "deal" than he would have ordering things separately. I had the pizza steak with provolone cheese, lettuce, fried and raw onions, sweet and hot peppers and pickles. I forgot the salt, pepper and oregano. The taste was good but it would have been better with the S, P and O. I'll add it to the 2nd half when I heat and eat it. Now for the cost. The price on the board for a pizza steak is $7.85. I'm from California! I come out to NYC twice a year for vacay... and every time I'm out on the East Coast, I like to take a drive down to Philly and load up on cheesesteaks and then drive back to NYC. There's been a few instances where me, and my son would come out and we would do a "cheesesteak run." Today we stopped by 5 places, one of them was Jims West. I was a little skeptical but we walked in, the place was small n cozy, a lot of smiles and the smell of deliciousness! The staff was awesome, they greeted us. They smiled, they were extremely nice. After we placed our order for a steak sandwich whiz wit, we went outside took a pic of the sandwich and the signage. While we were getting ready to take the picture, a gentleman and a Mercedes pulls up, gets out of his car and we noticed he's picking up trash on the sidewalk and he tells us hey, you guys go inside it's nice and warm in there. And then I tell him well, we're out of town out here taste testing different cheesesteak spots to see who has the best in Philly. After a few bites, I'm like holy shit, this is good! My son agreed.. the meat was very tasty, the consistency was quite even. Every bite had flavor. There wasn't an "unseasoned bite" it's obvious the cook knew what he was doing. so I go back in and let the staff know that I thought it was delicious but we still had one last stop to go. I told them that we were going to Delassandro's' which was one of my favorite spots. Long story short, we go to Delassandro's and I was quite disappointed. The sandwich was inconsistent with flavor on every bite. One bite would have full flavor, the other bite would be bland....at that moment we both agreed... Jims West is the new King of Philly!
