Took a short day trip to Philadelphia on Sunday, June 14, and had to try for the first time an authentic Philly cheesesteak sandwich. When in Rome, right? My cousin and family took me here, the original location of TONY LUKE'S, a mainstay for cheesesteaks in South Philly. The street-side sandwich shoppe had a a classic, no-frills neighbourhood stand vibe, featuring walk-up windows for counter-service. The dining room was a weather-protected, four-wall area with outdoor picnic tables. Tony Luke's covered a broad array of Old Philly Style Sandwiches from Roast Beef ($7.25 - $10.25) to Roast Pork ($7.00 - $9.00), Chicken Cutlet ($7.25 - $10.25), Rib-eye Steak ($7.75 - $9.75), Chicken Steak ($7.25 - $9.25), Hoagies ($7.25 - $9.00) to Specialty Sandwiches ($6.00 - $8.00). They also offered Side Orders, Fresh Sautéed Vegetables, Breakfast and Beverages. Accustomed to being served Philly cheesesteak sandwiches with provolone, grilled onion and green peppers in California (which I love), I was surprised to learn that the traditional cheesesteak from Philadelphia is composed of only thinly shaved ribeye steak, griddled quickly, chopped, and topped with lots of cheese (Whiz or otherwise) served on a soft, crusty hoagie roll. We ordered a Cheese Steak ($8.75) as well as a Cheese Steak Hoagie ($9.75), both of which were tightly wrapped long rolls in Tony Luke's wax paper. They were OK, neither knocked my socks off, unfortunately. My search for a mind blowing cheesesteak will continue when I return to Philly. read more

IGNORE ANY REVIEW THAT IS BEFORE 2022, those are from the original shop, not this one Don't be fooled (like I was) This is not a variation on Tony Lukes... The name confused me to begin with and I should have gone with my gut and saved it from this assault of fatty glob. I used to come here and bring visitors to Philadelphia for a taste of a great Philly cheesesteak on the way to the airport. Won't make that mistake again. Meat was overcooked, not juicy at all. Lots of fat and grizzle, almost inedible. If I wasn't in Philly (and you know how it can get) I would have asked for my money back instead of tossing half in the trash. Save you tastebuds and go anywhere (seriously anywhere in philly) and you can get a much better sandwich. I have been a devotee of Tony Luke's for 30 years. It has always been my favorite cheesesteak in Philly. Today marked the death of Tony Luke's. It has been renamed Tony and Nick's. I was here a few months ago and it was basically the same. Tonight I paid $17 for a cheesesteak that I waited over 20 minutes for. It was different. It was chopped steak. It was not an original Tony Luke's steak. It was TERRIBLE! Completely flavorless and inedible. Not worth $7 much less $17. I am so disappointed. We came here visiting from Chicago. The people were nice and the place appeared really clean. We didn't wait in line which was great and the wait for our sandwiches was also short. The reason for the three stars was the cheese steak hoagie I ordered was not very great. It was just ok for me. I would have liked more seasoning and more onions mixed in with the cheese. The meat could have been chopped up more too. I've had other cheese steaks in Philly and they just had a different consistency that this didn't bring. read more

I ordered catering trays from here for an "Old School Philly" themed 60th Birthday! The food was so good, and a good value as the portions were great. The woman who answered the phone this morning was so patient and kind for same day order. The evening staff at pick up were so detail oriented and accommodating. The trays, one assorted hoagie and one assorted cheesesteak with all the trimmings, were beautifully packaged and individually wrapped. I got so many compliments on the food at the party. I will definitely be ordering again from here! I called many famous sandwich shops in Philly to inquire about cheesesteak and hoagie trays; glad I went with Tony and Nick's! read more

It's been 12 years since I last visited--back when it was still Tony Luke's--and I'm happy to say the cheesesteak still hits the spot! Everything was exactly how I remembered it: perfectly seasoned meat, melted cheese, sautéed onions and mushrooms, and that signature bread that ties it all together. I brought one back home to Cali and instantly regretted not taking more! The peppers tasted just like before, and I noticed they now serve pickles on the side--which I don't remember getting before. The staff was awesome. They even hooked up my nephew with a Beef Buster, and that thing was loaded. Overal, this place is just as I remember it--pure satisfaction from the first bite. I've been coming to this spot for years, back when it was Tony Luke's, and it's always been my go-to for cheesesteaks and that Italian roast pork that just knocks you out with flavor. These days it goes by Tony & Nick's Steaks, but the heart of it hasn't changed--the food is still the best I've found in Philly for these classics. Today, the roast pork was as tender as ever, stacked high on a roll that somehow holds everything together without falling apart. The broccoli rabe still brings that bold, bitter punch that makes the whole thing sing. Money! A touch more salt than usual, sure, but still spectacular. The cheesesteak? Exactly what you want it to be--juicy, cheesy, and gone too fast. For me, it's still the place I measure all others against. read more

Didn't get a cheesesteak; they do the large pieces instead of dicing it up, which isn't my favorite style, but did get a roast pork instead, since I neglected to realize John's down the street was closed on Monday. The one day I pass through Philly. Of course. The flavors definitely deliver, the portions are more than generous, but the placement of the spinach and the pork meant I would get a biteful of one or the other, instead of a nice mixture. A bit of attention to detail could go a long way. But overall, I was pleased that Tony Nick's delivered a roast pork just as good as its neighbor. read more

I was in town for a work event. We had a few hours before we needed to be at the airport and went looking for an authentic, not corporate, cheesesteak place. This place is really unique. You order at a window and wait for your food. The seating is inside, but open air. I usually don't like to eat outside but this was a really fun area with good air flow so it wasn't hot. I got a cheesesteak with wiz and onions. There was not a ton of seasoning but it was very good. Thinly sliced ribeye steak, just as I expected. Everything was good. So I visited Philly today. Decided to make a short list of cheesesteak spots to try. This was one of them. Ordered their cheesesteak hoagie. People online were raving about their cheesesteak and some were not feeling it. So mixed reviews. Got back to my hotel room with this football sized sandwich. It looks overwhelming in size. They didn't event cut it in half. I feel like due to the bread this could easily feed 3 people. Anyway, I just was not feeling it. The flavors were not great. Some cheese on it. The former Tony Luke's, now renamed Tony & Nick's. Other than that, it's the same cheesesteak joint it's always been. Every time for us, it's the same, one cheesesteak to split and enjoy before or after on the way to or from PHL Airport. Hours are decent and it's not too far out of our way. Order at the window and your food is ready pretty quickly, depending on how busy they are. Tons of condiments available to enhance your sandwich. Here you may order your cheesesteak anyway you want it, with lettuce and tomato or anything that some other purist restaurants will not allow, like JRP (where no lettuce and tomato are permitted!). Once you pick up your food, you may eat it inside the little tented in area or outside if the weather is nice. I would love to give this place five stars, but it's not on the same level of some of my other favorites in and around the city. read more

It's been a while since I was in philly, and this time it was a drive-by on my way to Newark Delaware. This was my first time stopping at Tony and Nick's (as John's is closed on Mondays), and I am glad we did. The place is located right underneath the I-95, and offers a no thrills dining experience, but has parking, and the main reason we are here today, has really good cheese steak. We opted for provolone (they have 3 options and we went for the sharp) cheesesteak on a fresh seaseme seeded rolls. meat was delicious, and flavorful, the cheese was perfectly melted, we had it with sauteed onions and sliced Jalapenos. It is a sizeable serving, and really nothing really is needed to be added. Place was clean, and as soon as we got up, our table was cleaned so the next round of satisfied customers could eat. I moved into South Philly and was blessed to meet Charles my neighbor who has a 71-year-old stage 4 cancer patient asked me if I want it a pizza from a gas station or 7-Eleven for breakfast. Knowing my life experience and knowing that you never know when your last meal is going to be I tried to reframe his question in that regard as to having had 156 million views in my Google map contributions if I knew that this was going to be the last breakfast that I would ever have shared with a good friend where would I eat any answer to me was Tony Luke's sausage egg and cheese Italiano sandwich with no hesitation. I have traveled extensively I have written many books had many meals love cooking and I can tell emphatically that the people at Tony Luke's pride themselves on translating the inspiration given to them by their mothers and grandmothers aunts uncles that came over to this country and brought culinary excellence along with them. Give Tony Luke's a chance to impress you and you will not regret it. It's one of the beauties of being in the city of Philadelphia similar to New Orleans we are a city that prides ourselves on good food if you already are in such a blessed city that has such potential you realize what can really be not just a meal but a culinary experience that you will know unequivocally that God is real. I hit Tony & Nick's on a recent trip to Philadelphia. I had asked the shuttle driver from my car rental company to recommend a place for a cheesesteak because "when in Philly"! The restaurant is pretty simple. There are picnic style tables to eat at, and you place your order at a window. The Philly cheesesteak here was made with ribeye and was my second favorite cheesesteak in Philly. This was also the second best cheesesteak I've ever had my whole life so just so you know this was a really good sandwich! The cheese was melted hot and the bread was soft, the meat melted in your mouth and they didn't skimp on the toppings. I had scrapple here for the first time! I had it in the breakfast sandwich and it was really good! I was surprised because I was reading on his scrapple was made and let's just say it taste alot better than it sounds hahaha. My first roast pork experience in Philly wasn't good so I decided to try it here again, I now realize that I just don't like roast pork sandwiches and it's not really about the place I have it at. I guess I'm a little more negative than most about this place. Back when it was Tony Luke's, it was one of my favorite Cheesesteak places in Philly. I would stop here on every trip to the area and couldn't wait to get there. I've been gone a while and wasn't aware of the family blowup that caused Tony Luke's to close. On this trip I ordered a cheesesteak hoagie and a roasted pork sandwich with cheese. Both were ok to good but definitely not great. The meat in the Cheesesteak wasn't as chopped up as it should be and the flavor of the roast pork sandwich was a bit bland. A week or so ago I went to Tony and nicks for the first time. I rated it 4/5. Today I went back because I was craving cheesesteak. Today was a 5/5 experience. Last week my only complaint was the onions weren't as cooked as I typically like but today they were on the money. I stand by my highlights from the last review of the high quality meat and the roll being the hero. This time I went seeded roll and it was as good as last week's plain roll. I hate to write a review like this, especially to a place that I've gone to several times with my fiancé. But I'd be remiss if I don't. A few weeks back, my fiancé, son and I went over to grab a quick bite while we're in Philly. My son had a standard Philly cheesesteak my fiancé and I had both the pork sandwich. I got food poisoning within 5 to 6 hours and my fiancé then got sick two days later we ate nothing else except for that meal. My fiancé didn't feel great the next day so she was fasting and it finally caught up to her. I had sent an email immediately to the establishment, letting them know. . All I wanted was an acknowledgment no money back no not even a sorry just an acknowledgment of my email and they couldn't even do that. We ordered fries, a chocolate shake, Italian sub, three cheesesteaks & a roasted pork with broccoli rabe and sharp provolone sandwich. The fries were gone in five minutes on our drive home, hot with a little seasoning on them - yum! The cheesesteaks were delicious. The meat was so tender and we loved the seeded rolls. The pork sandwich was outstanding according to my husband with no stalks in the broccoli rabe whatsoever and very tender. My daughter loved the chocolate shake, it was thick and creamy. Went back to this Philly landmark to grab sandwiches for the road. Yes, I bought three roast pork Italians and two pizza steaks. Cost me about $70+ lol. My plan was to share the love with family. Had the cheesesteak with sharp provolone (would have preferred pepperjack) on a sesame roll. Was concerned that it would be like several other cheesesteak is the Philly area, lacking flavor. Got to say I was pleasantly surprised. The provolone and sesame made all the difference. I did add some cherry peppers, but had they not been available I still would have been pleased.
