Beachy theme, plenty of outdoor seating, and a solid location near the water (not quite toes-in-the-sand, but close enough to feel the breeze). It wasn't busy when I stopped in, which made for an easy, relaxed lunch. I went with the Surfin' Cali Burrito, because commitment to the theme felt necessary. Portions are big and prices are reasonable, so no complaints there. But flavor-wise, it was more "gentle ripple" than "flavor wave." Not bad, just not something I'd go out of my way to order again. This is my first experience at a Jimmy Hulas and the food was very good but the experience and wait time were not great. We got to the restaurant and nobody was there and we walked up and ordered our food right away. We ordered 4 tacos, a fish sandwich, and some sweet potato fries. Some friends we are with ordered for tacos and chips and queso. Not a crazy amount of food in my opinion. It took 40+ minutes to receive our food and we they forgot to give us a few of our items. When we went back to correct the order, they proceeded to argue with us that we did receive everything after showing them that we didn't receive everything they very angerly fulfilled our order properly. The only reason they are receiving three stars is the food was very good. But unfortunately, the experience with the staff did ruin part of the review for this restaurant. Yeah, the ambiance was nice. Very casual and open dining area. They had a bar on one side, but not enough staff to be taking orders, bringing orders table and staffing the bar. We had lunch here today. The food was not what I was expecting. We got the hamburger and the pattie was smaller than the bun and about the size of a hamburger patty at a kids meal for $12.75. I was expecting a larger pay, that weighed more than the bun itself. Ooo also got the cajun fries which could have been a meal in itself. The chicken nuggets looked good and the member of our party ate those without any problems. Service: This is a seat yourself, first come type of seating. You have to go to the counter to order your food and pick up your drink. They give you a number you put on your table and then they will bring it to your table. They will come around with refills of tea. Ambiance: It's a cute restaurant, I think it might have been a gas station at one time. Today they had a live band. It was great to eat outdoors. The restaurant filled up with people from Canal St. shopping and coming back from the Farmers market. Overall I would come back and maybe try a taco instead of a hamburger. This place was sooo good. We stopped over for a bite and to wait for the brewery down the street. This was the best idea ever. We were greeted warmly when we entered. They have a large outdoor dog friendly patio. After ordering, they brought out a large bowl of ice water for the pups. We got the Kahuna burger and the Teriyaki bowl. The burger was great. My husband really enjoyed the truffle fries he got with them. The bowl was yummy with great flavors and it was topped with pineapple. Would definitely recommend. Bathroom was clean and well stocked. I love their food, but the service at JH in NSB is terrible. I have come several times at lunch (not very busy) and it takes 20+ minutes for a singular taco to come out. It takes 30 seconds to make I'm sure. It's just frustrating when you're trying to grab a quick bite during the work day. This is a really cool place, with plenty of seating inside and out. There are games outside (corn hole) for those who like. The music is at the right volume to be able to talk while enjoying it. The kitchen is open and everything appears clean. The food was really tasty I got the Tropical Salad with crispy shrimp. It may become my new favorite!! The person I was here with got a burger, which we ordered double and it was just right. The fries were tasty "like McDonald's". It was kind of confusing when we walked in. It was our first time and we didn't realize we had to go to the register to order. The bartender over to his section and told us we had to order there and then they would deliver to the table. When he brought the salad, he brought it with only a plastic fork, which made it a little hard to collect all the yummy and pieces in the salad. We ordered Street Tacos, Mission Fries, a couple adult beverages and Cookie Dough Flautas for dessert. Friendly servers. We grabbed a shaded table outside and played some cornhole, drinks arrived within a few minutes. Drinks were on point! Food was pretty tasty too. My Street Tacos were listed as being on 'soft corn tortillas' (for this CA transplant ALL tacos require corn tortillas lol), but were partially fried, so a bit chewy. Not a deal breaker though. My family came to eat lunch here together but we all ended up eating separately because we got our food one at a time. One of my kids didn't even get her food until after the rest of us were done so we ended up asking for a to go box. Had no lids for my kids drinks... and they didn't have fried fish but had blackened. Which let us know right away the fish is most likely frozen The quality of the food was not worth this experience either. Mediocre food and terrible experience. I ordered a blackened Baja fish taco. The fish tasted like the top came off the salt shaker, it was that salty. They were willing to replace it with a luau taco, but didn't put a rush on it so I had to wait quite until all the other orders were completed. I also ordered a tree hugger that was swimming in sauce. The chips that were served with my meal were so crunched up they were basically crumbs. We actually ended up asking for a refund on the taco. Maui Poke Bowl: Fresh, Hawaiian-Marinated Poke Tuna, Jasmine Rice, Edamame Beans, Mango, Scallions, Cilantro, Crispy Onions, Voodoo Sauce. Surfari Burrito: Jerked Shrimp, Jasmine Rice, Black Beans, Cheddar Jack, Mixed Cabbage, Cilantro, Boss Sauce in a Chipotle Wrap. We were greeted by a friendly staff who gave us a number to take to our outside table where we were kept cool in spite of the heat. Other places in the area might have had ceiling fans on but they weren't high enough to be effective. But Jimmy Hula's fans were perfect for us. The food was excellent in flavor and quality, with the portions being generous and prices very reasonable, especially for seafood. My shrimp were on the smaller side (my wife's tuna was generous) but still the tastes were balanced and the heat for both was moderate and very good. This was my friend and I's go-to spot for girl's night up until our experience at the bar last night. I've been a regular for months and have never had a bad experience prior. The new male bartender with long hair was absolutely plastered while working. It seemed like he was also on some type of drug by the way that he was acting, but he was definitely drunk. He took forever to take my friend and I's order because he was too busy hanging out with his friends, who were sitting at the bar and keeping him company while he was working. I have no problem with the fact that his friends were there, as that's pretty normal in a bar environment, but he was not acknowledging the customers. Multiple other people at the bar had left without getting service, but we tried to give him the benefit of a doubt, so we patiently waited. He had my friend and I repeat our orders to him multiple times because he was too drunk to comprehend what we were saying, he was slurring his speech so badly that we had no clue what he was trying to say to us most of the time, and he talked to my friend like she was stupid for ordering "The Standard" taco to-go for her boyfriend because he didn't know that it's an item on the menu. Overall, not someone that Jimmy Hula's should be proud to have as an employee. Not only was he embarrassing himself, he was embarrassing the company. The two blonde female bartenders who are usually working when my friend and I go there would have never let his behavior slide. What I'm even more disappointed about is his ignorance towards Middle Easterns, as he and his group of friends were loudly and proudly cracking jokes about the genocide in Lebanon right now. As somebody who is half Lebanese and has family members there that I will never be able to meet because they're getting killed, and as someone with human decency, I might not agree with his beliefs, but I also believe that everyone is entitled to their own beliefs. With that being said, nobody should express their beliefs in such an awful manner, especially while working and not knowing the backgrounds and beliefs of the customers at the bar. Not only was the service awful, it was a heartbreaking experience for me as well. I truly hope that this situation is handled seriously. I kept my composure and left the establishment without causing a scene, but there are people out there who will not spare the same grace that I did. ** UPDATE ** - I did not leave this bartender a tip because of how awful my experience was. We arrived to jimmy hula's at 8:15 (they close at 9) and they already seemed to be caught up in closing tasks. Which I could understand if it was winter or a very slow night, but this is full blown summer. The manager (blond in her 60s) delivered our drinks over my infant in a stroller instead of going to the other open sections of the table. The drinks weren't even balanced on the tray and I know one wrong breath the tray and all the drinks can be on the floor. So I was shocked she would lean over and deliver the drinks over a baby. One of our meals didn't arrive after inquiring once we got it figured out the second time. Which would not have been an issue with our party at all but the awkwardness of us hurrying out of the restaurant before closing is why we kept inquiring. Same blond manager telling everyone who walked in that they were closing in 15 minutes instead of a hello how are you? (It was actually 20 mins til closing) All of the staff seemed tense and the vibe was awkward. One of the servers actually apologized to us and we greatly appreciated that. Manager was talking to staff about the customers // saying she has nothing to do because no one is leaving mind you they still were not closed. Most of the restaurant cleared out by 9:05 when we left. Our food was good but the vibes were horrible.
