This "shawarma" is essentially crispy mushroom, with cabbage greens, mayo, and tomatoes on a Greek pita. It's not even close to what a shawarma is. A Greek pita has nothing to do with shawarma! The problem is that some of these places try to be so considerate and inclusive in a way that ends up insulting cultures. You can't call this a shawarma and expect Syrians like myself to sit back and accept it. Shawarma is one of Syria's most authentic dishes, and this place stripped it of its authenticity because they think it's inclusive. It's culture hijacking, and it must be stopped. It's not inclusive; it's insulting. As a fellow Syrian--and keep in mind that Syria is one of the most original and authentic shawarma countries--I demand that you remove this word from your menu entirely. It does not belong on a vegan menu. And then the chef comes out of the restaurant, with all this audacity, talking to customers and saying, "You should have tried the shawarma--it's amazing." No, it's not. And you need to stop calling it shawarma. It's very provoking and misleading.
