Despite it's appearance as a "hole in the wall", it turned out to be quite good. I had Jims wonton soup with noodles (note to self; next time order without noodles) and it was chocked full of meats, a few shrimp, wontons and bokchoy. It was ultimately delicious and I'd certainly visit there again. As well the waitress brought an appetizer plate (free as complimentary and I am guessing it's because they've never seen me in there before) which was also great. Edit: (they give everybody a free appetizer with their meal, as I've seen them do when in store and as I get them every time that I order and I'm no stranger to their store) I'll certainly return again for lunch. Large wonton soup $10.05 (with tax) Edit: I return there time and time again, at least once a week sometimes up to 3 times a week and "Helen" one of the owners or the owners wife is always nice and pleasant and remembers my name. I always order Jim's wonton soup (without noodles) and it's always awesome. I recently started to order it with no chicken (I'm not a fan of dark meat chicken) and so they substitute more pork and shrimp into it, which makes it all the better. I love this place. It's crazy good, fresh, great service, friendly people and close to home. So good that my 4 year old daughter requested her birthday dinner be here! Tried Jim's Chinese restaurant for the first time. We had the Mandarin chicken which is different from other restaurants. No bone in and battered, however it was hot and spicy. We loved it. I'm a fried rice dude and get fried rice at every Chinese restaurant I go to, it was okay but if you like thick meat in my case BBQ pork then this is heaven for you. I prefer tiny bits of meat. The Mai Fun is my favorite here, has 2 eggs on top with chicken and vegetables. Jim's does have a lunch combo and from outside in, doesn't look like much but this place sure does get busy. Oh Jims, how I love and miss you so! This place is chinese comfort food. The potstickers are amazing. I loved getting the duck congi, but my favorite dish by far has always been the duck won ton soup. Considering how many cold foggy days there are in this area, that soup was a frequent staple of my diet. The wall is covered with pictures of everything they serve on their menu. The best thing about this place is the staff. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. Today, they gave me two free eggrolls with my dinner just for the heck of it. After a long and tiring day, that extra little bit of kindness was such a pleasant surprise. Service is quick and the prices are incredibly reasonable too. This was my second trip to Jim's (first time getting take-out) and I had the dinner special with veggie chow mein and orange chicken. Wow. Clearly a family-run restaurant and done well. The lady who took our order (who I believe was also the owner and cook) was very nice. She even gave us a free appetizer with our dinner. My gf and I both got the dinner specials plus one appetizer. Food was good and made piping hot. It wasn't mind-blowing Chinese food but if that's what you're expecting, you should expect to go to an expensive joint. Bill came to about $25 which was reasonable. The restaurant is a bit small and filled up fast during the dinner rush, to the point where we had a hard time getting out. So be careful when going during peak hours. read more

A friend had some take out from Jim's a while ago and brought my spouse a Won-ton soup. She liked it very much and soon enough we went for dinner. Definitely a place we go back to. We had black mushrooms with tofu, excellent, fried rice, excellent, sauteed snow pea sprouts, excellent, hot and sour soup, better than most Chinese restaurants. There are a lot more dishes on the menu and the pictures as well as other visitor's food that looked really good. We will bee back and try some other dishes. Our first visit was very pleasant. We have eaten at Jim's numerous times, but tonight we ordered take out, Mongolian beef and Orange chicken ..both with chow main noodles. I must say it was the best orange chicken I have had in years. The number of times I've patronized this place has been excellent and the extra free goodies is such a nice gesture. One time I went and the food was not as good I was so disappointed that it was scary. I also didn't see the regular cook who is in the back, so not sure if someone else prepared the food. Not the cleanest place to dine in, small restaurant at the corner so you know the parking is hard to find. We had to turn around twice because we missed it the first time. Walked it and the crappy door got stuck, it can't even be opened, and the waitress had to come and open the door for us. That's how old and crappy this place is. I was told I shouldn't expect too much for any Chinese restaurant at the Bay Area, I just didn't think it would be this crappy. However, once we got in, the waitress and the owner was nice, friendly, and attentive. The food comes in a reasonable portion with reasonable prices. This place is so authentic and had great options for all of their dishes. My husband and I were happy with everything we ordered and they even brought out a free "gift" of vegetarian egg rolls and sesame seed balls before our meal. We loved the eggplant and tofu dish as well as the shrimp and vegetable low mein-so many fresh veggies!! My husband also raved about the pork potstickers and said they were some of the best he has ever had. Can't wait to return and keep trying more of their menu! I moved to Monterey about 2 years ago and would never thought about finding a (GEM) like (JIM'S). Their Chinese food taste really good and would remind me of childhood memories. My wife and I have gone to multiple chinese restaurants here in the Monterey Peninsula and the quality and quantity is nothing compared to Jim's. This place may be hard to find or turn into due to the busy street that it is on, but, I promise that it is worth getting this place a try if you are ever in town or in the mood for chinese food. I have gone to Jim's two days in a row now, and the sweet lady would always be so kind by giving me extra food to try out. This is my to go spot for chinese from now on, price is fair, quality is top notch, quantity is very graceful, while other chinese restaurants charges an arm and a leg for less food. We were craving some chowmein and these photos looked pretty bomb. The food definitely hit the spot. Wonton soup was flavorful but not salty, chowmein was good and not too oily like at some places. Also loved the orange chicken and prawns with green beans that tasted very fresh. Our waitress was super nice and the rest of the staff was so attentive!! Everyone smiled and everyone said bye when we left! They brought us some yummy complimentary appetizers and you can tell they value their customers. We will definitely be back. read more

Completely disappointing. On so many levels... get ready for story time kids: -I called an order to go, was told 30mins and arrived on time. Waited another 15 minutes. If the food was decent, I would have brushed it off. But the food was a complete JOKE. -I ordered mushu beef, pot stickers, garlic bok choy, and crab fried won ton. Each dish was drastically sub par, bland, and cheaply done. -mushu beef. What a soupy mess of soggy vegetables and unseasoned chewy meat and was served with... flour tortillas?! WHAT! I couldn't stop laughing at this. Definitely not the paper thin wraps many other places serve with it. -pot stickers. These were flavorless and the pastry was thick (more like that of steam pork bun). Mostly dough with a tea spoon's amount of filling. -garlic bok choy. This must have been a JOKE. Where is the garlic, and WAY more alarming is all i have here are the white stems and bases. I ordered bok choy so i could eat the dark green leaves too, not just the base! They must have used the tops of mine for someone else's soup. (This would be like ordering celery and being served the bottommost white bases instead of the green stalk.) -crab won ton. This is a mouthful of over fried dry won ton cracker with a dab of... Fake crab meat?! (Imagine eating a handful of saltine crackers without anything to drink. Its like that.) Come on now, we live in a place famous for its seafood and you serve imitation crab without making that clear to the customer?? When I'm ordering CRAB I expect CRAB.
