I had a clutch replaced on my Toyota Matrix today. Toyota dealership quoted me $1700 because the job takes 7 hours. Jim's transmissions service quoted me about 1/3 of that price for labor and agreed to install the parts that I bought online. I got quotes from AAMCO and Cottman Transmission, but they were close to the dealership's quote. AAMCO immediately refused to use the parts I bought and quoted me some $360 for the clutch kit and $300 for the flywheel, while I bought these together online for about $200. And they were quality parts made by Beck Arnley. I was worried that after this repair the car won't be the same. Because it involved such an invasive procedure with the engine. But it's fine. Everything's the same except the clutch pedal moves a lot easier now. There were no traces of any work being done in the engine compartment or inside the car - no oil stains, no dirty fingers smudges - the usual stuff you find after a mechanic handles your car. So I'm really impressed with these guys. They even gave me the old parts back - I wanted to see them to make sure they've actually installed everything. The total price was exactly as quoted, which was a surprise. Usually you get some extra this and that fees. So overall great experience. I pretty much never write reviews. When the clutch on our truck went out, our primary garage referred us to Jim's for this service. It has been more than five years without an issue. When the clutch went out on our Jeep, they were our first call. The Jeep is older and modified, which presented some challenges, but Jim's found a solution and provided us with honest feedback. The vehicle sat for several months before we seriously drove it again and it began to experience issues. One of the parts was defective and broke within a few miles. We returned to Jim's and explained that very few miles had been put on it despite the time that lapsed since the repair. They checked the mileage against what they recorded during the repair and replaced the part at no additional cost. Jim is as good a tech/mechanic as you will find. More than once I have taken what appears to be a transmission problem to him and he finds some other - way less expensive - cause. For example, on my Expedition; I was certain the transmission was slipping when in fact it was a misfire of a cylinder. He fixed that and it runs great. (I have learned to quit trying to guess at what the problem is.) He does not sell you more than you need and turns around repairs quickly. We experienced a serious transmission issue while driving through Manassas VA on our way to the mountains for the weekend. Lucky for us we found Jim's Transmission Service through a quick Google search. This is a sole proprietor service shop that only does transmissions, which was important for us because we have an Allison transmission and haul a heavy RV so any transmission repair has to be done right! The owner was working on a Saturday morning (...the first good sign) when we arrived unannounced; he personally inspected our issue. The repair required was a full rebuild...his quoted price was VERY reasonable (the second good sign), even though he could have easily taken advantage of our 'stuck' situation. The repair time was as promised; two days (...fast, third good sign) and the owner agreed to stay until 7:30 pm to wait for us as we had to drive an hour plus, in rush hour, to pick up our vehicle (they close at 5:30...this sealed the deal on our opinion of this shop and the care it's owner puts into the quality of his service!). Well, I have one thing to say to anyone who plans to go this shop. Do you have a German made car? If you do, don't waste your time or gas to go there. They can rebuild it or put a new one but they sure are not going to give you a chance to fix any transmission issues. I guess they had bad experience with German cars! I had my transmission break on me and they offered me a great deal with a really quick turn around. My wife had to pick truck up so I didnt get to examine work at shop but wife told me there was a ticking noise when she was driving it back home. The next day I took it on a test drive and immediately notice a big exhaust leak that was causing the noise. I contacted the shop to inform them of the leak and they told me it was from a broken bolt from my exhaust manifold. After driving my truck back to the shop they showed me where it was leaking from, they still said it was from exhaust manifold. So I asked them if they were going to fix it because the truck didnt have the leak before I dropped it off and know it did. They said it wasnt because of their work and I had to get a new exhaust manifold gasket and get the bolt extracted out to fix the issue. I was going to give them a 1 star but the original issue with my truck was fixed at fare prize and great timing. Disappointed in this shop. read more
