The "Caldo de res" is a hearty and flavorful Mexican beef and vegetable soup. The name translates to "beef broth" and is one of my beloved, traditional comfort food. The soup is known for its rich broth, developed by slowly simmering some beef bones and vegetables. They also offer a weekly special which is Hamburger Steak this week. Breakfast review. Barriers. Lots of tables, but you order at the counter. Communication is possible but there still is a language barrier. So I wasn't asked how I wanted my eggs cooked (I'm not picky). Credit card payments supposedly have a surcharge you avoid if you pay in cash. I didn't verify that. Modest portions. Breakfast prices close to $10. Refried beans were watery. You get red and green salsa and chips. Hash browns / breakfast potatoes are super tiny cubes. Nothing wrong with that. read more

One of my best friends is visiting me from out of town from Pennsylvania. She used to live in El Paso. There was a couple of places we wanted to order from but unfortunately they were closed on Mondays. We decided to order from JJ's since we both hadn't tried it before. I don't order Mexican food that often because I usually make it or one of my relative does. We'll have to make some soon since my friend is visiting! Anyway... I'm going to say 3.5 stars but round up to 4. Overall, the food tasted alright but not great. Most of my food needed salt, especially the rice and beans. I tried adding a little bit of red salsa to the gorditas. I didn't really like the taste of the red salsa so I decided not to use it. The cheese and tomatoes sort of helped give the gorditas more taste. Another thing I kind of didn't like is that JJ's doesn't sell soft drinks when you order off Uber Eats. I was hoping to get a Sprite but I wasn't able to. FYI, ordering food from Uber Eats is very expensive at this time. Ordering from JJs was no exception. They charge a small gas fee, along with a couple of other fees. I only ordered because we were really hungry and my friend was craving Mexican food. She says there's no where to really get Mexican food in Pennsylvania at this time without driving really far away. She and my bf both said the food was alright. She got red tamales and he got chicken fajitas. My friend said the tamales didn't have that much meat in them. Not sure if I would order from JJ's anytime soon. Probably not off of Uber Eats. I would have to go in person so that I don't pay those extra fees. The good thing about JJ's is that they have a pretty large menu to order from so...lots of choices for customers. P.S. I ordered my favorite meal from there on Dec 26th around lunch time and was given enchiladas that were not cooked. The red sauce was poured on top but the enchiladas were not put in the oven. The cheese still looked shredded and the tortilla was not cooked at all. I have ordered from here many times and it was good before this visit but it was upsetting they allowed uncooked food to be served to a customer. read more

JJ's in the EPT (El Paso Texas). I've got three gorditas on my table from a taco shop one mile from my motel room in West El Paso. Texting a friend who grew up here and they were lovingly adamant I go. I was convinced (thanks Yelp) already but when I heard they'd eaten there almost daily for 2 years, I got up and dressed myself for snacks. The gorditas and an horchata look just about perfect. I open the container of the verde sauce and wince at the zap of searing heat in my nostrils. I nod in approval and fork on a timid albeit healthy amount on my snack. I chew and my eyes close as I begin to nod "yes". I sit up and start writing this after my first bite. I haven't moved the drink yet as I'm still savoring this fried goody. I've been wanting to try this place for a while now. Today, we finally stopped in. It's very open, clean and with plenty of seating. The young lady at the counter was very friendly and helped us to decide what to order off of the large menu. I opted for a combo plate. #10 had a taco, gordita and enchilada with rice and beans. We sat down and the lady that took our order, brought us chips and salsa. The chips were decent and the salsa was pretty good. It was an odd orange color and runny but I decided to give it a try. It had a ton of flavor and a bit of a kick to it. Shortly after, our food was delivered. The plates of food were huge!!! The items were on the smaller side, yet plenty big. It came with huge helpings of rice and beans, which I love! The taco and gordita was filled with ground beef and beans? I think. It was good. And very filling!!! They were stuffed with fresh crisp lettuce and lots of cheese. They didn't skimp on the cheese at all! What I liked most is that nothing was greasy. After searching an hours on the road and reading it from blogs and other food reviews site, decided to make a quick stop from roadtrip to grab couple items. As it looked from menu all the items seems like it came with sides of rice and beans. Order 3 items, tacos , pregnant burritos, Gorditas. 1: server/cashier: hella rude.. keep giving attitude, doesn't want to answer any questions. And after ordering just walks away... doesn't even let us know how long food will take( this was Togo btw) When the food came out, didn't want to even give out any hot sauces nor any extra utensils... so at this point... f it... why bother to even ask.. 2: food: overall, meh. Portions weren't bad but as far as flavor it wasn't something so special I have to stop by. Plus like I said... not enough hot sauces... on top of that, half of my "combo meal" didn't even come with rice nor beans... so I feel like I got scam? I don't know maybe it's cause I made it Togo?? I have a friend who raves about the avocado Gorditas and I stopped in to try them - but also tried the traditional ground beef and potato.... and my answer is still.... bland. I typically think things are OVER salted, but this was the first place where I felt like everything needed salt. Chips, salsa, beans, rice, avocado, beef, and chicken ALL needed salt! So food was mediocre but not bad - the service was downright BAD! Ordered at the counter.... took 15 minutes to get our drinks.... another 5 to get chips and salsa and we could never get a refill on anything! Hope-in-the-wall place in El Paso with decently priced and yummy plates. My aunt who lives here recommended the gorditas, which is something I haven't seen back in California. If you haven't had one, they are basically little corn tortilla pockets filled with meat, tomatoes, cheese, and shredded lettuce. They are petite, so I ordered the gorditas plate with rice and beans and was able to polish off the entire plate. Will definitely come back again next time I'm visiting El Paso! read more

JJ's is one of those places you think of when you think of home. Anytime I make the trip out to my hometown of El Paso from Phoenix, I know I'll be visiting JJ's at least once. There's nothing fancy about this place. It's located at the corner of a strip mall next to some sort of auto repair place, and if you're not looking for it, you probably won't notice it's there. You place your order at the counter and take a seat at a table, booth, or bartop. Chips, chile (salsa), and water are brought just moments after you're seated. There's a small TV in the corner that is usually playing novelas or, depending on the day, some sort of game. The menu, which is posted on a wall above and behind the counter, has all the traditional Mexican food you would expect, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner items. This is where my review becomes a bit one-sided, as I have only tried one menu item: the gordita plate. They are heavenly pockets of masa filled with the most wonderful ground beef and potato mixture, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and shredded cheddar cheese, and are served piping hot and perfectly seasoned. Add some of the very hot chile that comes with the chips, and your mouth will thank you. The plate comes with three gorditas, refried beans, and Spanish rice, though the gorditas are available on their own. The friendly staff are very accommodating and are happy to refill your drink or bring you extra chile. I'll be making the drive to El Paso this weekend, and I'm already excited to stop in at JJ's! read more

The gorditas was delicious. Got the chicken, shredded beef and avocado gorditas. The avocado one was more like guacamole mix instead of fresh avocados. My only compliant is that the gorditas wasn't hot enough. I remember eating at Delicious Mexican Eatery on other side of town, their gorditas came out pipping hot! The menudo was very good as well. The hominy was very well cooked and the beef stomach was tendered with no dirty smell. The soup was not hot enough for me, and the server had no problem at all heating it up for me. A few minutes later, viola~~~the menudo was great! Given the location of this place, I dunno if I will go out my way to come here. But if ever in the neighborhood and craving for gorditas or good bowl of menudo, I would for sure come here again. read more

I went in a few days ago to have lunch with some friends. I was impressed with how extensive their menu is. As a white dude in El Paso, this place is heaven. The chips and salsa were perfect! I ordered the steak tacos platter which comes with 5 tacos, refried beans, and rice. The steak is cooked to perfection, the corn tortillas were warm and soft, and the ingredients were all fresh. I love me some cilantro and boy was it bomb! To top it all off, this place has the best horchata I've had in a long time. I must have had like 5 glasses of it. The staff was very friendly and attentive (I never once had to ask for a refill on that bomb horchata) In conclusion, this place is amazing and I'll definitely be going back! read more

So I actually use to live in El Paso about 6 years ago. I actually remember coming to this place with my ex husband. Back then I wasn't the biggest taco fan but I use to come for Caldo the Res y Menudo and from what I remember it tasted amazing. Anyways, so for some mysterious reason to me at least I find myself yet again in El Paso. We're just getting here today and to say the least we are starving and extremely sleep deprived as a 27 hour drive will do that to ya. So the hotel we're at is fairly close to my old apartments and since my partner is KO I decided to come out and get some tacos because that's the major craving these days. Came in I see that they have 12 packs of tacos served with rice beans salsa and guacamole and I couldn't pass that up. So when I asked for the carne asada he looked at me and said they don't usually do that because it's more expensive so I offered to pay for them individually and that's when he knew I was serious and made what i for a minute thought would t be possible possible lol. The tacos tasted just alright. The food was a bit bland and definitely could of used a but more seasoning. Though the food was a bit bland this definitely doesn't mean i won't come back.
