Me and my fiancé stopped in for a beer and burger and the service was HORRIBLE. We sat at the bar and our bartender right off the bat had a very sour attitude. I believe his name was izah? Izak? As I ordered my beer, he turned his back at my fiancé as he was also ordering his beer. Then rolled his eyes when my fiancé repeated his beer order. We let it go but then had to ASK to order as our bartender was talking to his co worker about how he didn't like the day and wasn't having fun and wanted the day to be over. Don't get me wrong. Everyone has bad days but he honestly made the experience horrible. The perfect ending to our experience was when my fiancé payed and I usually tip (that's how we dine out, he pays I tip) as I wrote cash on the credit card receipt, our bartender said to his co worker "oh great she wrote cash on the slip but hasn't tipped" "greaat" as I was grabbing my wallet to tip. I been in the industry, I'm all for trash talking customers.. but when they aren't RIGHT INFRONT of me. Love the place and food but the experience doesn't have us running back to visit again. read more

I had the most amazing popper burger, with green chili infused cream cheese, peppers, bacon, all of the amazing deliciousness of it. My husband had the raging Cajun burger and he loved it. Our son had the "lunch lady, angry style" which included pepper jack cheese in ghost pepper sauce. He loves it hot, and it was delicious for him, too. read more

Love, love, love this place! I'm not a fan of burgers, but I crave for JL Beers' burgers. Enough said :) The burgers are always seasoned just right and so tender. I usually get the JL burger or the Philly. Loaded with seasoned sauteed onions, and their signature beer cheese sauce (I can just scoop this sauce and eat it with a spoon by itself!). The bun is so fresh and soft. You must also get the loaded chips (sliced and fried right on the spot, seasoned and loaded with real bacon bits, chopped jalapenos and of course the yummy cheese sauce). I was in the Sioux City area on business and a co worker suggested this place. We went at 2pm on a Friday and the place was packed. I don't drink but they did have a craft root beer on tap which was very good. I got the Cajun burger which was good, but not exceptional and and fries were so so. Great beer list, great burgers, and I really enjoyed the fresh-cut chips (with buffalo sauce and blue cheese - yum!). Service was very friendly but a bit slow - would have gladly ordered another beer but never really got the chance until we were already done with our meal. I stopped in and sipped on a special limited batch of an American wild ale called Post Pardon from Fernson and nibbled on some of the best soft pretzels I've ever had. The bartender made good conversation and knew a lot about beer. The cooks were also very friendly. The music made for a very warm and friendly atmosphere. Outstanding! We would have to say this is one of our favorite places to eat and drink when in the Sioux Falls area. They have a great selection of burger options some unusual and some not so unusual but either way they are tasty and always seem to be superbly cooked and then there's their fresh cut fries, yum yum. The food is great! Now for the beers, lots of choices. From your typical domestic brews to some great local and regional brews with many offered on tap. Sioux Falls has TOO MANY restaurants! But this is NOT one that needs to leave! The Humpty Dumpty Burger came highly recommended, and although an egg on a hamburger with grilled onion and green pepper sounded strange, it was excellent. The beer cheese dip for the house made chips is mind blowing. I have only been there for lunch time, and coudn't have a beer before going back to work. So, I haven't had a beer there. But, beer mail is pretty cool! While waiting for order to come, they give you a post card to fill out and send to anyone you'd like. They mail it for you, no additional charge, and after you give it to them to send, they call out "BEER MAIL"!!! So... why only 3 stars? SERVICE is hit and miss, mostly a miss in my experience. Been there once with friend, once with wife and once alone for an afternoon lunch break. The servers rarely checked in after food was delivered and had to walk to the bar to ask for another can of soda two out of the three times I have been there. Those two times, only ordered soda, not good business sense, it is not like the soda is a free refill, it comes in a can. So, extra charge every time you get more anyway! :-( Epic fail on the service!!! Good thing the food makes up for it, or they'd be out of business fast! read more

Great burgers, fries, and beer. I've had almost all of the burgers on the menu and all of the styles of homemade fries. All are consistently good. They also make chips but I have typically gotten the fries of the chips. I don't think they have ice because if you ask for water they give you a glass of water with no ice and if you ask for pop they will give you a can and a cold glass. One complaint about the downtown location is that it is always busy and the place isn't very big. I've always had to wait for a table. I've gone at 2:30 in the afternoon on a Saturday and we had to wait for 15 minutes for a table. Since the Western Ave location opened I have not gone to the downtown one so that might have changed. read more

Went here to watch the Army vs. Navy football game & satisfy the dude's craving for a good stout. The "beertender" that tended to us was great. She definitely knew her stuff & was super friendly. Strange for a place to not have appetizers so we ordered loaded fries & they were awesome. They were perfectly sized for 2 & I remarked how they weren't all soggy like a lot of "cheese fries." Ate here with friends and it was great. Although it is known for its burgers, I wanted chicken. The ranch chicken and bacon sandwich with chips was mighty good. The rest had beers but I don't drink so I had water. All enjoyed the meal and fellowship. Really nice place to go. It was empty when we got there but packed when we left. read more

As a fan of peanut butter I would have never thought to put it on a hamburger but I'm glad they did. It may sound strange but it tastes great and is worth a try if you like PB, though next time I would ask them to go heavy on the PB. They have quite the beer selection and all beers after 10pm come with a free giant pretzel! It made me want to stay late just to get one. DO NOT CHARGE FOR WATER! Gouge all you want on pop, beer, food, etc, but WATER SHOULD ALWAYS BE FREE! I will NEVER set foot in there again. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Plus I drink a lot of it on a hot day and if you think I'll pay $1.61 per bottle (with tax) for a tiny water bottle you're insane. Now your food was ok, burgers fresh but bla and unseasoned, chips were ok but greasy, chewy and inconsistent and it was a greasy mess. I'll grant you that with ONE correction you could make a zero into about a 3 star. My answer, just go to the other place for burgers, BIG, juicy, FLAVORFUL AND guess what... FREE WATER! what a concept... I hope you make a change, I doubt you will as your business was definitely flowing well. I hope you recognize it's the RIGHT THING to do for your customers that don't want sugary pop, booze or another plastic bottle to plug up landfills. ... and yes it's a minor issue but a MAJOR offense in principal. I've been to JL Beers a few times; couple times to eat, couple times just for a beer. Each time is fairly laughable and taken in stride, as it's not a place I expect to be blown away with top notch quality/service at. The last time I was there though, the service was atrociously terrible and worth yelping. After my table of 4 sat for 5 minutes easily without a modicum of attention our server came over and without any sort of prompting announced she didn't want to be there. Not the ideal foot to set off on in this mystical journey of server-customer relations....but okay? My Plan A beer was gone as well as my Plan B. And our server had no idea what type of beer the Plan B beer's replacement was...once I got her to not mumble the name of the beer I then informed her of what the style of beer was. To sum up what I think of JL Beers: charging for water is asinine, unknowledgeable staff on the great selection of beers is really disheartening, the service is notoriously lacking and the burgers are similar to McDonald's...but with beer.
