Having heard great things about Joan's on Third for many years, I finally had a chance to try it out with my friend who was visiting from out of town. Being a first timer, it's really not clear what to do if you want to dine in. Do you just grab a seat? Is there a host? Do you just order from one of the several cashiers? Confusing. Once instructed to go to any register, but one in particular if we wanted the full menu, off we went to the back corner. Having done a quick Yelp lookup, I saw that the short rib sandwich was a favorite amongst the regulars. And lo and behold, there was a huge sign of a delicious looking short rib sandwich above the register. I ordered that and was pretty disappointed when the thick, buttery golden, crispy bread depicted in the photo was thin, soggy, pale and half grilled. It looked nothing like the photo and looked kind of sad. And not even so much as a pickle on the side. As a lover of all things short rib, it tasted good... nothing earth shattering like the reviews I've been reading, and had a few limp onions and a sprig or two of equally limp arugula hanging out the side. If it was just the experience and the food, I'd probably give Joan's 2.5 stars.... But.... My friend ordered a veggie rice bowl and made it CRYSTAL CLEAR that she is allergic to mushrooms. Like tongue swelling, epipen needing, throat closing reaction allergy. The cashier confirmed and double confirmed that they would omit the mushrooms. Halfway through her bowl, she flicked aside some vegetables, to find a huge mushroom hidden inside! How CARELESS and downright RECKLESS! Thank God, she didn't miss that and put that in her mouth. Is this how Joan's handles people with severe allergic reactions? Fuming mad. The only positive is that Joan's sole women's restroom has actual Charmin toilet paper (I know I'm really reaching here to find something positive), which is something I've never ever experienced at any restaurant and bar in all my life. Too bad they care more about toilet paper than the safety of their customers. read more

I've recently started working on 3rd st and this place is walking distance to my work. If it was a quality place I would be probably going there everyday. Today was my second time that I have this place a shot... first time I had the short rib sandwich. The bread was oily and the meat was salty... however, i didn't want to give up on them yet, i tried this place again today and had the maple glazed rosemary chicken and got to say that I wasn't impressed. Have to correct this. Daughter loves Mac n cheese-would eat it twice a day if allowed. We were in the area and advised this was the best place to grab a bite for lunch and you might even see a celebrity. Not a fancy atmosphere, deli style service and expensive. I didn't eat because nothing looked good enough for those prices. My daughter was disappointed with Mac n cheese and only ate it because she knew how expensive it was. She doesn't like mayonnaise and thought she tasted it in it. Who knows, but she never would recommend it here. Also, expect a long wait to order and good luck finding seats together. read more

I love the decor and Chinese Chicken Salad at Joans, and if I'm in the mood for that particular salad, there really isn't anything else like it out there. Joans has such a wide selection of delicious looking pre-made case salads, desserts, drinks, and more. Everything there is basically made and packaged to entice you just like how makeup packaging works - cute and so perfect. The Chinese Chicken Salad is great and so filling - it just is perfectly mixed and feels refreshing. If I am not in the mood for that, I generally will go for a salad trio and their egg salad is fantastic as well. I wish Joans was open later, and generally I can easily find parking in the neighborhood behind it. (there is a small lot directly behind this 3rd street location, but it's stacked parking) The place is always bustling and quite busy at lunch, but it's never too hard to find a table. read more

This place has gone downhill and only cares to make money. I ordered a salad and wanted to skip out on the chicken and get Tuna instead -- they made me pay an extra $7. I tried to speak with the manager and he said we can't substitute-- I said fine I'll pay the extra. When the salad came it was the most unappetizing thing I've seen or tasted. I recently ordered the breakfast burrito here. They took 30 minutes to bring out my food. I realize my meal was sitting to the side for a long time. It wasn't crowded , mind you. I go to Joan's pretty frequently whenever I have work in LA, but the most recent time I went was not the best. I always get a Chinese chicken salad because usually it's so delicious, but when I ordered it recently the chicken was not crispy it was soggy (the chicken is normally breaded and fried), the dressing was barely in the salad so I had to ask for more of it (when I asked the cashier for more dressing they said they normally charge which is sad because I wouldn't have asked if I had the normal dressing amount on my salad), and the side of couscous I ordered was just okay and not the normal texture it once was. Maybe I went on an off day or I got the "bottom of the barrel" since I arrived around 6pm, but I probably won't order the salad anymore. read more

I was visiting my best friend in LA and I met her here for lunch. It was really crowded but we had no problems finding a table. You order at the counter and then they bring it to you. We both got the tomato and mozzarella sandwich on ciabatta bread. It was fresh and delicious and absolutely huge! Would definitely make this a go to for lunch when I am back. They are known for their pastries but their lunch menus is extensive, so there is really something g for everyone! read more

I think it's time to say good-bye to Joan's on Third. The once, chic place to eat has become less than average on all fronts. Let's start with the famous Chineese Chicken Salad and the Ceasar Salad with Chicken. What happened to the nice juciy breast meat? Now the chicken is cut into small pieces, from all parts of the chicken. Has no taste, and the chicken is cold, with slight refridgerator taste. I've given this place so many opportunities to correct itself, but the price point dosen't match the taste in food anymore. And what's really GROSS, are the several employees breathing over the bowls of food, picking up the bowls of food and giving it a toss to find out what's in the bowl so they can deliver the right order to the right person. I am very confused by so many high ratings. This place is very cute- one stop shop for deli, sweets, and to-go items..but Beverly Hills or not this place is way overpriced at the deli counter. Short rib mac and cheese was $12 for a small cup (fit in the size of your hand cup). I got an ok salad for $7 and my sister tried the short rib sandwich that was $14. Nothing was bad, but nothing will make me come back here. It just wasn't amazing. I loved that it was so dog friendly, which makes me sad to be so underwhelmed. We were allowed to just walk in with my pup. The coffees seemed reasonably priced from the menu I saw. All of the employees were really nice and helpful. Sad to not love this place :( read more

Great interior decor. Love that kind of rustic charming farm look. Almost reminded me of being in SF! There's also a little bakery inside where I picked up chocolate chip & oatmeal raisin cookies. They were $2.95 each but they were massive. Ordered the scrambled eggs & toast, side of hash browns, pancakes & cappuccino. Everything tasted great! Came here for breakfast on a Saturday morning at 10 AM. The place was super busy and filled with westsiders with a halloween hangover. There are a number of different seating areas, both inside and out. We opted for the inside community table, one because they had seats available, but two, because it's a nice setting inside. I ordered the New York Breakfast sandwich which was incredible. So freakin' good! So yummy! My friend ordered an omelette with a side of hashbrowns. Buyer beware, the hashbrowns are CRACK on a plate. They are so good I finished her order of potatoes. We both had arnold palmers, which were yummy and reasonably priced at $3.25 ea. Service is a bit awkward here. They deliver your plate to your table by the number, but service after that is nonexistent. The guy literally brought out our plates, put them down and ran off. My friend didn't have a chance to ask for ketchup. We didn't see a server or runner after that. All in all, a fun place to eat with non-existent floor service. They have a wonderful variety of food. What is the excitement? The folks crowding this place on the regular when I've driven by at least 1x p/week anytime of day the last 5 years ! Very mediocre and overpriced. I tried for 1st time today. The tortilla soup today -- a rainy day in LA-- I thought would hit the spot. Wrong! They held back the cheese like I asked but the $6.95 CUP yes ... cup ... was watery with 3 or so pieces of diced tomato with sprinkles of tortilla on top. I sent it back and asked why so watery. Have always been a fan, but went there yesterday and had a crappy experience. Had waited in line and ordered and when I received my meat it was cold. I went back and told them I don't eat cold meat and was told this is how it's served because of Covid . Then I asked for it be heated and I got a "no" because it's been sliced and because of Covid they cant take it back. This place has a unique feeling. The food is fresh and incredibly tasty. Simple recipes, very well organized. It has an open kitchen which can not be more honest. If you're in LA don't miss it. This weekend, my finace and I ventured to Los Angeles, and Joan's on Third was one of the places recommended for us to visit close to our hotel. We visited on two separate occasions - once for breakfast and once for lunch - on two separate days and found a relatively consistent experience - both in terms of quality and service. What I find rather convenient about this place is that you can order anything from any counter. So if you see a long line at the coffee stand, you can head over to a different register to order your latte (or other beverage of choice). It's also incredible to see the size of the menu - everything from coffee to pastries to sandwiches to mac & cheese to ice cream to groceries and even wine and beer. If you imagine something existing at a cafe, chances are it is offered here. In addition to these menu options, you also have the choice of dining in (with table service) or taking your food to go. Either way you choose, the quality is delicious, and the portion sizes are pretty large. From the pastry section, my fiance and I ordered a chocolate chip cookie and banana chocolate walnut bread - both were very good! We also ordered a coffee, americano, green iced tea and Arnold Palmer (all fresh without being too bitter or too light). When we visited for lunch, my fiance ordered the mac & cheese (which she loved) and I ordered a turkey club sandwich (also very good, although not quite at a NY deli standard). The one aspect of this place that definitely disappointed me was the service. For starters, service here is slow. The register averages about 2 minutes per transaction (i.e. 10 minute wait time if there are 5 customers in front of you), and the staff never seems in any kind of hurry to get to your order (except for the baristas and chefs, who seem to manage their tasks quickly). In one particular instance, we went up to the bakery register (where a staff member, whom I'll call "Guy 1", was finishing something up) only to be told (in no more a polite fashion then I am stating), "you know you can order from any register, right?" I was a bit put off by the tone but did venture over to another counter to order a pastry and coffee. Two minutes later, while still in line, I glanced over and noticed Guy 1 now helping somebody else (if only I had waited). When it finally came time to order that pastry, the staff member at the current register (who was more friendly, and whom I'll call "Guy 2") let me know that I could pick up my pastry back from the first counter. 10 minutes later, I noticed my pastry still was not ready, and others who had ordered the same thing were now getting theirs (and quantities were depleting). I then got back into line for Guy 1 and let him know. He seemed to not be aware that I had ordered but was kind enough to get my pastry for me. Overall, service at this place is really inconsistent, inefficient and disorganized, although I believe the intention is quite the opposite. I would recommend management reconsider the flow of the service team to really optimize this place. That being said, the food here really is delicious. If you're looking for a quick bite (although maybe not that quick), this place is worth a visit. Quality: 4 Service: 2 Ambiance: 3 Cleanliness: 5 Value: 4 read more
