Despite already having dozens of restaurants in LA sitting in my list of resaurants to try, I was more than happy to go with my gf's friend's suggestion to check out The Sycamore Kitchen for lunch. For one, I'll always defer to a friend's personal recommendation, but also, after perusing their photos on Yelp and seeing how good their food looked, we were immediately sold! Of course, it didn't hurt either that coming here was going to save me from the decision paralysis from trying to figure out which of my bookmarks to knock out first! Almost as soon as we walked up to this place, I was already enamored with The Sycamore Kitchen. Not only is the front patio area super cute and cozy, but the overall vibe felt so chill and relaxing. Inside, there was a relatively short line to order, but it actually gave us time to check out their display case of pastries and baked goods. However, as tasty as everything looked, we knew we had to order off their menu, which is chock full of dozens of dishes - breakfast/brunch plates, sandwiches, toasts, salads, bowls, weekend brunch specials, daily lunch specials, and so much more. In fact, there were so many things we wanted to try, we didn't know what we were getting until we got to the register (hello, decision paralysis!). -- WARM ALMOND FOCACCIA FRENCH TOAST with Fresh Strawberries, Homemade Whipped Cream, Maple Syrup...$17 This wasn't much to look at, but this was pretty good! The focaccia was so soft and flavorful and I loved the texture and bit of sweetness from the almonds. Plus, the coating and the thickness of the toast helped to keep it from getting soggy, too. -- BRAISED SHORT RIB SANDWICH - Griddled Sourdough, Melted Gruyere, Horseradish Aioli, Caramelized Onions, Side Salad...$19 I was torn between so many things, but this was definitely the right call. The sourdough was browned perfectly and the short rib, gruyere, onions, and aioli complemented each other so well. I easily (and gladly) could've eaten two of these! -- PASSIONFRUIT MINT AGUA FRESCA...$4.75 This was so, so good! The passionfruit in this was so good and I liked how the mint freshened up the flavors a bit. Plus, it was so refreshing and not all that sweet either! -- GINGER LIMEADE...$4.75 Not quite as good as the Passionfruit Mint Agua Fresca, but no less delicious. The hit of ginger in this wasn't overwhelming and went well with the tartness of the limeade. Beyond how good the food was and how friendly the workers are, the other thing I liked about The Sycamore Kitchen was how convenient it was to come here. Finding nearby parking was relatively easy and, despite the steady stream of folks that came in here, it always seemed like there was a table or two available. Given all of that, this place is the perfect spot to grab a bite, whether it be for breakfast or lunch during the week or brunch to kick off the weekend! read more

The Sycamore Kitchen had been on my list for a while, although after finally trying it, I'm not entirely sure why. I was in the neighborhood after yoga and stopped in for lunch. The patio is nice, the service was friendly, and it's a pleasant enough place to sit, aside from the surprising number of flies joining me for the meal. I ordered the Italian chopped salad and an iced latte. The salad certainly looked the part: bright, colorful, and full of ingredients. Unfortunately, the flavor didn't really match the presentation. It was pretty bland and forgettable. My bigger issue is the mandatory service fee. I really dislike this increasingly common trend of adding a required fee that explicitly isn't a tip, supposedly to help provide employees with a living wage. Pay your employees appropriately and price the menu accordingly. Tacking an extra charge onto the bill just feels unnecessarily opaque and leaves a bad taste, especially when customers are then still expected to consider a tip on top of it. Nothing was particularly terrible here, but between the bland lunch, the flies, and the service-fee policy, I left wondering why I'd had this place bookmarked for so long. read more

I've lost track of how many times I've been to Sycamore Kitchen- it's so good! Food is always delicious and also on the healthier side, drinks are decent and pastries look amazing (these I've yet to try). My favorites are the Yucatán and Jerusalem Bowls. It's a great spot to catch up with friends or dine by yourself. Staff is also very friendly and accommodating. Lines can get long during the weekend, it's open seating but there's plenty of seating inside and outside so that's never been an issue in my experience. A cute casual cafe in a cute area for shopping. I liked that this brunch spot wasn't overly crowded, sometimes you just want great food without squeezing past people or standing in lines on a weekend morning! We got some cafes, the banh mi sandwich, and the short rib sandwich. The short rib sandwich was packed with meat and served nice and warm. The banh mi sandwich was definitely a fusion style (made with turkey and a different kind of bread from the traditional style), and I enjoyed it as a lighter option. We found the Sycamore kitchen delightful attentive. My wife had her fluffy eggs with avocado. She was thoroughly happy They had pancakes and I'm a bit of a pancake snob. They were fantastic. Service was spot on. Parking is horrible when you see a spot grab it. Rookie mistake went on NBA all stars weekend and I think they all were on LA Brea when we went. I always make it a point to grab lunch here when I'm in town. The food is delicious with lots of healthy options (falafel bowl is always great) & the baked goods are divine. We have not been to SK for a bit but our memories were outstanding! Today my husband and I went for lunch- he had his usual chicken sandwich I had a salad. My salad was really good- a special of the day, but my husband's sandwich came out I looked at it & just saw bun NO chicken- or at least I thought the chicken was missing. He said no it's in the sandwich but honestly so small I couldn't see. He felt like he was eating a bread sandwich. So disappointing- I know it's shrinkflation but come on charge a bit more and actually give a chicken breast that fits the bun. read more

Have visited this place a couple times since being in LA and everything I have gotten so far has been amazing! Their drinks, pastries, and food are all very photogenic and all very tasty. The indoor and outdoor seating is top tier. Even tho it is next to a busy road, you still feel like you're in a little oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. Not the biggest fan... my friend and I ordered the Spanish latte + pork belly hash and the both of us ended up getting sick. Food was bland and the Spanish latte wasn't the best. Only option for hot sauce is tapatio. Our other friend got the salmon toast and didn't like it either but was fortunate enough and didn't get sick. La Brea has become the home of so many diverse and wonderful food choices... every time I am lunching either at Sugarfish or here, I see new stores offering cool and unusual clothing choices, wonderful bakeries and desserts. Parking is challenging ( especially with the recent amount of construction going on) and the traffic delays add time to one's commute there. However, this restaurant is my favorite place for meetings and catch ups! Today, my friend Ann and I enjoyed delicious TURKEY BANH MI and a ROAST TURKEY SANDWICH with Turkey, cherry mostarda, camembert cheese, red romaine, and mayo. Both were on fantastic tasting and crusty bread. Everything is so fresh here. This restaurant has been open for quite a while. I only discovered it a few months ago. As a seat yourself cafe, I was very impressed by the service. All the open tables were cleared of plates and crumbs, and food and silverware were both still brought out to you.
