I found myself stranded in Pearl River, New York on a snowy Sunday and ventured out to the dining district. Joe & Joe had come heavily recommended by the hotel concierge at the Pearl River Hilton, and I was intrigued by its lineage to an original location in the Bronx. The lasagna was outstanding - and I dare say, the best that I have ever tasted. Joe and Joe's lasagna is hearty, generously portioned, and packed with delicious cheese and sausage. I accompanied the meal with a glass of Chianti and a chocolate martini. Both were excellent! The craft cocktail menu had many interesting selections for the spirits enthusiast. Service was reasonable - a bit slow and inattentive at times, but proficient overall. The restaurant decor with black and white photos of old New York elevated the experience. We finally made it into Joe and Joes, and glad we did! Tried walk-in in the past during rush hour but they can fill up. Neighbors who are much more Italian than us love this place and now we know why. Food (4.5) Service (4.5) Ambiance (4.3) I had my first visit regular dish, Chicken Parm and it was very good. Huge serving just a little dry around the outside but still much better than average and I had a full lunch the next day! Wife has a salad with shrimp which she also enjoyed. Said the shrimp were outstanding. We had a short wait where we waited at the bar and enjoyed a nice selection of beer on tap (required within Pearl River). The waitress was excellent, and the owners go out of their way to say hi on the way in and out and make it known they are there if needed. The ambiance is a v bit dated but still nicely fits this traditional Italian restaurant. Prices are very fair, no rush whatsoever, and a good overall experience. We will return! read more

It has been a while since we have been to Joe and Joes. This is a typical Italian spot. We have been here more recently for a drink at the large bar. The staff members are very friendly. We went on a Monday night, and I was surprised by how busy the restaurant was. There was only one waiter working all of the tables, and I wouldn't have noticed, only did because he said something. He was working really hard and very personal. They give you bread to start and it is hard and crusty, which some people like. Then we ordered two apps, the fried mozzarella carrozza and rice balls. They both were good, nothing amazing. I wouldn't order either again, I would try something different. For entree, I had the veal parm. I normally order chicken parm, but I have been having a lot of chicken lately, I decided to try something different and I am happy I did. The veal was pounded nice and thin. My husband had the chicken parm, so I was able to try that one, and I was happy with my veal choice. Someone else in our group had the lassaga, which looked good and I would try next time we went. One thing about this place is the portion sizes are HUGE! We had lots of leftovers. The dishes came with a side of pasta, my husband tried the pasta with the vegetable and potato croquettes, which he loves. I tried a piece of it and thought it was heavy, and wouldn't be able to eat a full one. The last time I ate at Joe & Joe was in the Bronx approximately 45 years ago. Overall the food was great however a few comments. The bread was steal and should have been warmed. The salad was excellent but should have been served in a larger bowl. The main courses were all excellent and came out hot. Our server, Joe Jr. was fantastic. Here's what I know: the appetizers were less than satisfactory. it was neither crisp nor tasty. (fried calamari) the entrees were from average to very good (veal parm) - (baked lasagna) + i wasn't pleased with the hostess either. i inquired with her about gratuity. she seemed like i intruded on her evening you really shouldn't work in food services if u have an attitude. I have eaten here twice and was impressed with the arugula and fennel salad and clams oreganata. The "tortellini Joe & Joe" was delicious but the sauce was a little watery. The hot antipasto was a big mush of everything and we didn't know what we were eating, but still tasty. Unfortunately the owner was not friendly both times and disregarded my friend and I after waiting 5 minutes or so, yet greeted a couple behind us as soon as they walked in. What I ordered was fantastic. The Chicken Country Style has boneless chicken medallions, sausage, prosciutto, potatoes, peppers, rosemary, garlic, butter, and a white wine sauce. Will definitely be back for another meal. All food was delicious with good size portions. It all started with fresh warm bread that was excellent. Looking at the menu I was not sure what I wanted but went for the chicken parm and although it is hard to mess up this dish, it was by far the best chicken parm I have ever had. Wife got lobster ravioli and she loved it. 5 yr old Daughter got spaghetti and meatballs and the meatball had a particular spice that none of us liked - by far the least favorite of all the food we ordered. However, since my chicken parm was so delicious and the portion size was large, daughter had plenty of that to fill her up. For apps we got the rice balls and fried calamari. Very tasty. Rice pudding was a perfect dessert to close out the meal. Wait staff were all very friendly. Soda refills are not free, always a pet peeve of mine when it's fountain soda and you have a bar on premises. read more

After a busy day of packing my son up to go back to college, my boyfriend and I decided to go out for an early dinner. As we're were looking online for somewhere that we haven't been to before we decided on Joe & Joe. We were greeted by a very friendly server who sat us. We were the only people in the room. Like I said it was early. Our server was Michael... the one who sat us. We had nice conversation and he gave us some suggestions. Since we made it in time for their "Snow Bird Special " we decided on the Salmon Brodetto and Eggplant Rollatine. My salmon was perfect. Soup/salad (Of the day was Minnestrone) and dessert choice of homemade rice pudding or cheese cake were all quite delectable. No coffee or tea included but for all that at $21.95 plus tax & gratuity is a steal! Ordered the stuffed sole and shrimp with mashed potatoes, and it was flavorless, watery, the shrimp was severely over cooked and rubbery, and the mashed potatoes had skins in it for some reason ?? and tasted microwaved. Their chicken Piccata was over cooked as well. You're better off spending your money elsewhere. read more

The Owner does not know how to treat his customers. Especially when we are party of 19 for a special birthday dinner. He is a rude and obnoxious man who gets angry at his customers when there is problem. He lied to us about reserving the back room for the party. He was rude to my Mother when she dropped off the cake. He was rude when he yelled at one our guests when there was confusion about a dinner order. Also, make sure you understand their confusing menu or you will get a plate of six shrimp with no pasta that is called "shrimp scampi". Because you can't get pasta with your shrimp if you also want a side salad. Kudos and many thanks to Joe, Jr. our ONE WAITER for our entire 19 person dinner. He was awesome and very apologetic about his Father: "He gets that way". Well, if he gets that way - you don't want to be there. Too bad he has be embarrassed of him as a boss AND father. Great for this neck of the woods, but overall a solid place with plenty of character if nothing else. Went and had a nice meal on a saturday night, wasn't too crowded overall. Because of a big party that was going to go in the main dining room, we ate in the room adjacent to the bar. It was noisy, but not that bad. The inside reminded me somewhat of Fiorentino's (Gravesend, Brooklyn), which isn't surprising as this place has roots going back into a former Italian area in the Bronx (East Tremont I think?). So while the atmosphere was on point, the service is not. Except for the manager/owner, I was not impressed at all. One of the busgirls was good when she started working, but the other was pretty lazy and left everything to the main waiter. The waiter himself was pretty unattentive, not in a good mood, and forgot a few things; this wouldn't normally be a problem, but going to an old-school establishment like this, I expect a lot better. He was very friendly with one of the regulars, which would be fine if he didn't neglect his other tables. The premeal salad was good, nothing mindblowing but its free, so I'm not complaining. I got the swordfish sicilian special, which was an oreganata variation with very good spicing. However, the piece I got was rather small for the price, and there was too much breading. All in all, it was still a solid dish but I probably would order something else next time. The side of pasta it came with was a bit overcooked, but a lot of these older places don't make it al dente unless you ask. Regardless, the tomato sauce was light but good, it just could've benefited from a little seasoning. My parents ordered the veal parm and linguini and white clam sauce, of which I liked the veal better as it was very good quality meat. I had a cappuccino and cheesecake for dessert, both which were solid. They did at least bring the bottle of annisette to the table after we asked. Although the service was disappointing, the atmosphere and food were solid. Not worth a pilgrammage, but very worthwhile if you live in the area or are passing through. read more

I've eaten here twice and so far, two for two. I'm predicting no outs the third time, with consistently good Italian food and a welcoming host/owner named..........you guessed it, Joe! I had a great seafood salad in addition to a beet salad. The fish were plentiful, and although the murky waters of the Hudson River are close by, it's safe to assume this was NOT where my mouthful of fish had led their previous life. More likely, they were swimming in the Long Island sound quite recently. My friend had penne with calamari. No chewing gum, rubbery fish in this dish, just tender, firm, white pieces of squid in a simple but flavorful red sauce. I had an Espresso Martini with my dinner, tasting rich and creamy, giving me a bolt of energy induced from the shot of espresso "Straight to the moon, Alice!" Simple interior with a bar in downtown Pearl River. Our waiter was quick witted and attentive, always a good combo when attending to this customer.
