I was ripped off. I went here because it is the designated spot for my mower warranty repair. I was PRICE GOUGED. As per other reviews, I am not alone. The customer service is also terrible. I was charged $79.99 for a Honda carb # 16100-Z8B -901, I was also charged $12 for shipping and $32 for labor. I called two other repair shops once I left and was quoted $60-$70 for the complete job, installed. Using the same Honda part. I could have purchased my same mower, brand new for $30 more than what I paid. Also I was told my carb had debris in it. But on the invoice it states water in carb. They wrote on my mover, in black marker as well. Not sure why. I believe in supporting small businesses. I believe in honesty and great customer service is a must. I learned my lesson and will always read YELP Reviews before I allow this to happen to me again. It's possible that I will get a response stating how this is all my fault. It's possible that somehow the price will be justified. It's also possible that Degen's actually learns something from the reviews and adjusts accordingly. Update 04/18/19: And as I stated above. Would NOT recommend. took my riding lawnmower to fix the blade/rotor after getting a loose paver stuck under it while cutting the grass. Told Wesley (presumably owner) that needed to get that fix and while at it to sharpen the blades as it had not been done in years. I mentioned to him that I have done all other maintenance myself and had recently changed oil, filters, new carburetor, etc. fixing and sharpening the blade was the only scope of the job. First was $150 for pickup and delivery (standard I assume), when I was told all was fixed the job was another $650 dollars (YES! I WAS SHOCKED) but we had not agreed to a previous repair cost since it could not be determined so it is what it is. When I went to pay I had been hit with the following: $19.98 fuel $19.96 oil $12.99 oil filter $9.99 fuel filter $8.99 spark plug $25.98 grease tube $15.00 freight charge So $112,89 for parts for an oil change and maintenance that was never requested. So not only all my original John Deere parts that I have used a month prior to do my maintenance was unnecerary replaced by non brand parts, I was being charge all this money for something that did not need NOR HAD ASKED FOR. out of the $51.93 was credit back after going back and forth with store owner. He said things like "your old was old", "well if you don't want it we can put your old oil and parts back" "when customers bring us equipment we do the maintenance if we see your machine needs it" and all sorts of other nonsense. Any reasonable person would first look at the oil on the dip stick and see if clean or dirty and more so, before adding unrequested work would consult the customer first. Was also charged for 5 hours of labor ($500) and another $80 in 'shop chemicals" (god only knows what that even is". he went on and on about keeping the deck clean and that my deck had a lot of old grass stuck there and that I should hose it down after each use and that they had spent a lot of time cleaning it themselves. When I got my tractor delivered back at the house, I saw underneath that while the front part of the deck was cleaned, in the back still had the same old stuck on grass (so more lies). I finally used the tractor to cut the grass and to my surprise it does make a weird noise (not constantly but far too frequently) something it never did before, also my break pedal now makes a lot of noise too (guess the $26 worth of lubricant was not used here). I do take full responsibility for not checking the tractor while it was still at the shop but when I came to pay my bill it was already loaded on the trailer to be delivered so that was my own stupidity and foolish trust on this people. After using the tractor for the first time and noticing all this new nuances I called the store and spoke to the owner, Wesley again. He said that they would pick up the tractor if I wanted to but if it was something unrelated to their repair I would be charged again for pick up and delivery fee, plus repair, etc. Since by now I had absolutely NO TRUST on this establishment I decided to cut my loses short and move on as I was sure that they would find some story about not being related and try to get another few hundred dollars for it. This place is very shady they look like a well run honest business but buyer beware. You are better off going to a major service department like Burkhart and paying the same amount without getting swindled. I will never come here again I was lied to about what I was going to be charged and was quoted. I requested to know up front the price so that when I came to pick up I wouldn't be surprised. I ended up being very surprised and just straight up disappointed at how I was treated and the answers given as to why and what I requested was not performed. Ex. I requested the chain bar be replaced but instead was told I didn't need it replaced and they ordered parts & did other service without my approval on all equipment. The days of treating your customers like you would want to be treated are long gone one it comes to this Company. When I arrived the lady at the front couldn't give me a straight answer and was very defensive. ** PRICE GOUGING ** TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE ** My bf was in need of a fuel valve for my generator ASAP because he had a event that afternoon. He googled "generator repair near me" and Degen's Lawn & Garden was the closest location. He brought his generator with him to the store and had the guy look at it to confirm the part that he needed. They guy checked it out and said "yes, the fuel valve is leaking and will need replacing." My bf replied, "cool, I need the exact same part because I am going to do it myself." He gave him a look, but my bf didn't think anything of it. He charged him $52.99 for ONE fuel valve. After my bf paid and left, he drove down the street and thought, that part should not cost that much. He googled "generator near me" for the second time which led him to stop at West Hollywood Mowers. When he got there, Anthony the employee looked at the generator, confirmed that he needed the same part and said that the part should cost no more than $10 (it cost $9.70). My bf was shocked and showed Anthony the receipt from Degen's, his response was "yep, I should have know Degen's was the one." After that my bf went back to Degen's to return the $52 fuel valve he bought from there and the guy had an attitude that he wanted his money back. My bf told him that it was unfair to charge $43 more for the same exact part. The guy replied, "it is what it is, our prices are our prices" and would not take the part back. When my bf got home and tried to replace the fuel valve with the part he bought from Degen's it would not fit, he put both the old and new valves side by side and noticed that they were different. He had to wait until Monday to take it back because it was after hours. When he got to Degen's on Monday to show them that they sold him the wrong part and asked for his money back, the guy replied "all sales are final, I can't do anything about it." My bf SHOWED him that the old/broken valve he took off had a filter on it and that the one he was sold did not and that he can't use the filter for the new one because it does not fit. The guy from Degen's replied, "i didn't do the work so its not my problem." My bf told him, "its not about the work, its about it being two different valves. The guy responded, "I'm done talking about it" and refused to take the part back. This is pure PRICE GOUGING and the worst customer service I've ever experienced! This place is a straight up scam! There is no excuse for charging 5x the actual cost of a product and having a no return policy unless your intent is to scam people. DO NOT SHOP HERE! The reason I came here in the first place was because it looked like a reputable operation however the customer experience lacks and or is non existent. You will be welcomed with a brash attitude while strong arming you into the repair costs. I specifically requested an "estimate" for the repair of my small 1k generator. What I received was an excuse why this (the estimate) was not possible and thus the full repair was completed to the tune of $254 dollars. Mind you we are speaking about a generator to m power a blow dryer. I went to pickup the generator to offer the business an opportunity to explain the discrepancy from what I requested and was only offered the same BS story about "step 1" being necessary. The situation was very uncomfortable and in my opinion dishonest. Also, I believe a repair shop must provide an estimate before repairs are complete? I will also check into this. I could never see myself doing this to one of my customers especially a new one. So if you are going for a repair make sure you don't get the Step 1 treatment or will cost you! read more

This establishment is the worst I have encountered. My father went in looking for a replacement bolt and since the man was out of them he ordered it to the store. My father was told it would take 2 days to be delivered. Once the 2 days had passed the man never returned any calls and then was closed all week for Thanksgiving. The week following Thanksgiving my father left a 1 star review and upon showing up to the store the man refused to give the bolt until the review was changed. I showed up with him today and the bolt was "missing" once he was assured the review wouldn't be changed. As I requested a refund he was able to go and find the bolt immediately throwing it at my father while he used colorful language as we left. This establishment most definitely needs to be reported as one of the worst. My first rule of thumb when doing business with anyone and they fast talk you into business it won't end up well. I took my Exmark riding mower to this shop. Initially dealing with an older white gentleman assuming he's the owner. I needed to replace the hydro gear. He requested I put down $500.00 cash deposit for diagnosing the problem along with parts and labor. Which shouldn't have cost merely that much. A very long story extremely short. My riding mower stay at his shop one month and when I received it back it was in worst condition then when I first left it at the shop. The mower ended up with more problems. To top off everything I had to pay $1,000 more on top of the $500.00 deposit. This palce hustles working class people out of their money. RIP OFF!!! read more

So I took a leaf blower (barely used) over there to have it looked at due throttle bogging and stalling. The unit was still under factory warranty so was hoping they would do do the right thing and get it covered. They made me leave a $40 deposit before I left in case not covered under warranty ( I read between the lines on this one). 2 weeks later it's fixed and ready. $79 bill for this fuel flush. Said it was bad gas which was not true because my other equipment ran fine on the same gas. So it actually ran fine for the next (2) times I used it. I did get the fresh gas to just make sure and 89 octane. Guess what, unit still bogged and stalled. So I dug further being a former auto mechanic (not going back there to get charged again). Fuel line in the tank had no filter and the connection to the pick-up line was not fitted right...loose fitting at the coupling and deteriorated fuel line. I put a fuel filter and new pick-up gas line which gave me the positive fuel flow required. Unit runs great now. My opinion, scammers! read more

Horrible service! I had my mower sent there for warranty service because it would not go into park. I get the mower back and tech disconnected the brakes and proceeds to tell me the mower does not have brakes only a clutch. I know this is not true because i have had the machine for a year. Now the mower will still not go into park, has no brakes,and he must have broken the linkage or transmission because it will not go into any gear but first. They had the mower for a month. Service department is a total joke. Mower is already at another shop. Hopefully they can fix what Degens broke. They also charged me $30.00 for parts that I found out from TroyBilt are covered under warranty. It says they have been around for 50 + years. It must be new owners If you take pride in your equipment like I do and you bring it there it will come back like junk. Very frustrating They also have compliants against them with the BBB. Stay away. Crooks. $60 diagnosis charges even if it's in warranty. Like everyone else that has written a review they start repairs without providing you with a diagnosis or a estimate. They pretty much strong arm you into the repair. In my situation they claimed to had fixed the lawn mower took it home to find that it still wouldn't start. I then took it back for them to tell me the need to replace more parts and charge more money. Price was well over price of a new one. Why was I not contacted and given the option to repair or not. At $500.00+, your test should be making a call to the customer - what if the customer is not in the financial position to incur such costs - Degen's gets to keep the customers property? Sound like the lack of communication is intentional - free tools for Degen's. Took my T210 rider in for repair as per referral from Craftsman. Carb failed and hydro locked engine with fuel on a fairly new mower. Dropped off mower and had to leave $100 deposit (RED FLAG), provided case number and asked owner to work with manufacture on what obviously is a warranty issue. I get a call a week later advising that the mower is fixed and ready for pickup. Went to pickup mower this past Monday and was handed a bill for $554.91 and was told that it was not covered under warranty and that is the cost of the repairs. At that point, I was left with no choice but to pay the ransom money ($554.91) to get back my $2000 investment. Degen's never communicated any information to me that this was declined as a warranty issue and that I would be responsible for the cost of repair. Only took it in because mower is under warranty (my mistake - carb warranty for 1 month and not for gas related issues as per CS at Craftsman after the fact and complaint) - I should have been given the option to allow or decline repair and to pay the appropriate diagnostic cost. What a rip-off, stay clear of these people because they will take advantage of you. I could have repaired the mower for 1/5th the cost myself but thought warranty would cover issue. When I contacted service provider (Degen's) I was told I was wasting my time and I was not going to get anywhere or any solution on this complaint - nor would they give me any info or pics/proof regarding the so called "debris/water in Carb" (NOT TRUE) he claimed was found in carb. The carb failed mechanically and began failing 3 weeks after I purchase it from Lowe's. Something went horrible wrong here and there was a severe breakdown in communication, I tried to give them time to work this out with manufacturer but I should have called every day to ask where we were - don't make that mistake, call every day to find out what they are doing to your equipment. It's just ridiculous that you are pretending that you needed to replace the carburetor in a 6 week old mower for 2/3 the price of the mower. It should have been cleaned for around $50! I had to authorize it because you would have kept my $60 deposit if I had not. Also, you charged me $200 when you quoted me $170, and no, taxes aren't $30. They are rip offs I paid 700 for my John Deere mower they claim another person rigged it up so they wouldn't do the same they couldn't fix the electrical switch so I'll have to jimmy to start up mower with a screw driver, after I left shop I took to another shop on Pembroke Road called smith lawn repair they fixed in one day charged me only 85.00 more. STAY AWAY! Borderline scammers. Took my Troybilt Mustang 42 to them since it was under warranty and this business is listed as an approved service dealer for Troybilt. I understand how engines work and could do the work myself but did not want to void my warranty by doing the work. BIG MISTAKE. These guys were clueless as to the problem with the motor, and really did not understand how a mower works. They accused us of multiple things that I do not want to list and drag on about (Bad gas, using commercially, etc.), it seemed like they were looking for any reason to void my warranty rather than try to help me get my warranty. In the end this business tried to scam me by telling me the entire motor was destroyed due to bad gas and that I should leave the mower with them and buy a new one. My mower only has 12 hours of use on it. I told them **** NO, picked up my mower, and had to pay them $300 for changing out bent push rods that cost $6 each and take 30 minutes to change out. I took the mower home and began running the usual tests for fuel, spark, compression. The engine was running on one cylinder.... so this business gave me back my mower without fixing the main issue. I pulled the head off and found that the head gasket was blown and that the head was warped on the side that the gasket blew. I am still not sure what caused the head to warp, but it seems like it was a factory defect and should have been covered under warranty. After $115 in parts and 5 hours of work, my mower works great and I just cut my lawn today. I will NEVER EVER take any of my stihl equipment or lawn mower to a repair shop again. I was already doubtful of the professionalism and honesty of this business as I have always heard bad news about lawn service centers and this definitely set my mind to doing my own repairs from now on. If you do not know how to work on small engines then I am very sorry for you as I do not know where you can take your mower to get fixed without being ripped off, but DEFINITELY DO NOT BRING IT TO THIS BUSINESS. Please take heed to what I have expressed as I have not over exaggerated my experience, I simply believe that businesses like this need to be ousted and the public made aware of their willingness to take advantage of people who do not know any better. I am very thankful to my Grandfather for instilling the knowledge of engine mechanics into me otherwise I may have fallen for their scam. I have been going here for the last 10 to 12 years. Always friendly, very knowledgable and knows exactly what you need! I had a warranty issue with a Husqvarna trimmer some years back, he advised me bring it in, they would see if covered under the warranty, and I would have it back in a week. The issue was covered by the warranty and I had in back in 4 or 5 days. It is family owned and run, and that is the best kind of business to deal with. In order for you to stay in business you have to care about your customers and that is what they do for sure care about their customers. I have recommended him to friends and will continue to do so. Not only do they sell & repair lawn mowers & other equipment, bur they also repair generators (which is what they did for us) Wes walked us through every aspect of what needed to be done & how much it would cost. When he returned our fixed generator (with the old parts that that been replaced) he again walked us through everything & even took the extra time to give us tips & money saving suggestions so we wouldn't need to see him as often!
