Given the reviews, came here with fairly expectations and while the service was great, the sandwiches left a lot to be desired. Most notably, the bread was not fresh/soft but was either a day or two old or was stored in a refrigerator? Either way, it was hard and dry. The chicken salad, which I was told they were "known for" was definitely good but a bit on the dry side. So, with the bread already dry, it was fairly disappointing. Is Joe was actually next door, I'd be 20lbs heavier and cashing in my 401k to have lunch. Luckily, he's just next door to his own butcher shop and around the corner from me so I'm in the clear. My husband hates sandwiches so it's a treat when I can go to Joe's. Timeout - who hates sandwiches? That's like hating puppies. Shouldn't exist. My new favorite is the egg salad. I ask the polite staff at Joe's to take their BLT and add a scoop. Evidently I am the only one whose done this but call me a 49er because I have struck gold. It's creamy egg salad, crispy bacon, rich avocado, and buttery bread. Wow. Za. Wowza. The egg salad has a ton of garlic (I think? Haven't asked Joe) and it's fantastic. Chip and drink options are limited. It's Broad Ripple Chip Company and some retro bottles of pop among other random beverages. I'd say this is the only negative. The sandwich, chips and a drink Will also cost you ~$15 (assuming you don't impulse purchase a tub of peanut butter). Seating is confined to their expanded patio outside. A small corner of the butcher shop has a counter where you can order sandwiches and a variety of premade food items. While there are some traditional options this is definitely a place with some creativity and incredibly high quality ingredients. It took us while to decide because I wanted to try almost every sandwich on the menu. We did the braised beef, the French orchard and an oatmeal moon pie. I might add my husband "doesn't like" oatmeal cookies yet he fought me for the last bite. From everything we had I don't think you can go wrong. Be warned there isn't any inside seating, but they do have several tables set up outside. After our insanely delicious sandwiches we decided to go back in and try a few more thing to for dinner if that tells you anything. Also, the prices are very reasonable for the portion sizes and quality. The real question is why did it take me so long to find this place... already planning my next trip back. read more

I stopped by today for a quick sandwich pick-up and was immediately greeted by a staff member who directed me where to order. The menu is chock full of amazing sounding sandwiches but I opted for their best seller: the IPA Braised Beef. Let me tell you, this sandwich did not disappoint. This sandwich was everything a good sandwich should be. Hot and fresh. Cheesy but not overwhelmingly so. The beef was tender. The caramelized onions and red wine sauce gave it a sweetness that really rounded it all out. It was reminiscent of my favorite short rib grilled cheese sandwich that a (since closed) local food truck used to sell. Honestly, it was the perfect sandwich for this rainy day and I will be thinking about it for quite some time. There are a whole host of other reasons you should visit this shop, but honestly you just need to see for yourself. 10/10 would recommend Joe's as your next Carmel lunch stop. read more

I highly recommend Joe's Next Door for your sandwich fix! I spent this last summer working my way through the menu, trying all of their hot sandwich offerings. My favorite is the Evan's IPA Braised Beef sandwich. They scoop out some of the bread from the ciabatta bun in order to make more room for the huge amount of tender and tasty beef. The havarti cheese is melty and pairs perfectly with the caramelized onions. El Cubanito is a close second choice. The pork is tender, the ham is salty, but the Garlic Mustard Butter brings this hot sandwich to the next level. Every other sandwich I tried was delicious. I can tell the chef took much consideration for flavor pairings and proportions, as each sandwich is balanced with harmonious ingredients. If the Chicken Torta is calling your name, I advise swapping out the Challah Roll for a crustier bread option. The bun didn't hold up well to the juicy pulled chicken and salsa, but the flavors were mouthwatering. Lastly, you can't beat the service at Joe's. The sandwich-makers are friendly and professional. I have been continuously impressed with their safety protocols during COVID-19 and have always felt safe and cared for when I walk through their doors. I can't believe it took me this long to try Joe's Next Door! They are connected to a butcher shop so you know you're getting quality meat with your menu options. Highly recommend trying one of their sandwiches instead of your chain sandwich shops-their food is so fresh, huge, well worth the cost, filling, and delicious. I personally tried Evan's favorite and the Debris po boy. I liked Evan's favorite, but I loved the debris po boy. Will definitely be going in my restaurant rotation. When I go to a deli, I go for the food. Sure, if they have great customer service that can add a fifth star to a review. Convenient parking behind the shop with access through the back of the shop into the deli is great too! Oh, and a variety of sides that if you are heading home, you can whip into something a little more than just chips. That's good too! So my wife and I decided to stop by Main Street in Carmel and managed to get there before closing at 5 p.m. We were greeted into Joe's Butcher Shop/Joe's Next Door. The east end of the shop is lined with butcher shop selections. In the middle of the shop are rows of unique items to enhance your home cooking flavors. And on the west side of the shop is the deli where you can order some great hot and cold sandwiches. Going around 4:30, there was no line and my wife and I selected the Roast Beef and Cheddar while I went with the highly recommended House BLT. Although we had the sandwiches sliced in half for easier sharing, I think we both preferred the BLT because it was on a completely different flavor level from anywhere else. The BLT is comparatively thin to the other sandwiches served at Joe's. The bacon is sliced just a bit thicker than most commercial brands and undergoes a marvelous transformation during their house curing process. While retaining a bacon flavor, there is a sweetness that was unexpected in the sandwich that I cannot attribute to any of the other listed ingredients. The sandwich comes with a sweet butter lettuce, a generous slice of heirloom local tomatoes, an entire sliced avocado, roasted garlic aioli and served on toasted sourdough. This is a two fisted sandwich because the avocado makes it hard to hold together with one hand. Absolutely delicious! The roast beef was piled onto the stirato roll and topped with aged white cheddar, house scallion / horseradish cream, and romaine lettuce. I thought the sandwich well balanced, while my wife thought the beef just a little bit dry. The flavor was really good in both our opinions. We only waited a few minutes for our sandwiches and then went to the register near the front of the shop to check out. There are a few small tables out front of the shop where you can eat and people watch when the weather is suitable. Unfortunately, there isn't any room inside for seating. Even after reading all of the life changing reviews about this cured bacon BLT stacked with avocado, roasted garlic aioli, crisp buttered lettuce, and fresh heirloom Indiana tomatoes I was still doubt. Well, I came, I ate, and my life was changed. The secret to this sandwich is the bacon. Thick, crisp, peppery yet sweet bacon. The bacon is the star of the BLT show. I threw bacon shaped confetti after eating this sandwich. Their top selling sandwich is the IPA Braised Beef. It's good but the BLT will rock your world. I stand by just about everything from my first review (except to note that there is some outdoor seating which my wife and I really enjoyed on a pleasant autumn afternoon) but I don't think I was giving Joe's enough credit. Let me lay out the positives and negatives: Negatives: it's cramped and a little confusing getting through at first. Positives: friendly customers helped me, and staff were incredibly patient and helpful as well in my first of what will undoubtedly be many trips. Sandwiches were every bit as good as they sounded. We arrived at 12:30 on a lovely Friday afternoon and got some good advice from the server and ordered the ("best in the state" he says) BLT. He was right. And the popular Evans IPA Braised Beef. So delicious! We sampled small sides of street corn, Greek salad, macaroni salad and crab salad - crab and Greek were our favorites. Stopped in with my mom yesterday to pick up a few different meats for the week. Such a great experience. The staff was really helpful and friendly. Everything is really reasonably priced, especially for the quality. I will be back to try the sandwiches sometime soon. Food was amazing. I had never been before and the ordering/paying process was confusing. They were pretty busy so there wasn't a lot of direction as to where to go and what to do. The seating area seemed to be sufficient. The sandwiches are pretty pricey and do not come with a chips or drink. I couldn't even find a regular soda to buy in the store. This place is a gem. On days I don't feel like cooking, Joe's next door prepared food is always a winner. The bbq pork chops are amazing as are many of the sandwiches offered and sides. When I do cook, I've gotten very picky about the quality of meat. I'm spoiled by the fresh chicken, seafood, beef and pork here. I REALLY wanted to love this place. I drove out of my way to get there but it was a nice day to walk around downtown Carmel so I didn't mind. Parking was difficult to find but that's to be expected in this area. I walked in and no one greeted me. I walked around aimlessly and finally found a women to ask where I could order a sandwich. She told me I needed to go next door. I was confused, so I asked where that was. She began laughing at me and said, "Honey, do you not see the other counter? It's RIGHT THERE." Gee, thanks for making fun of a new customer (and this wasn't "next door"). I ordered the BLT I had heard so much about. I was told to go pay with the cashier while I waited. Another gentleman was waiting by the register but there was no cashier to be found. We waited, and waited, and waited. I finally tracked someone down who was chatting with another employee by the cheeses. He said the cashier must have disappeared again. He rang us up and I waited on my sandwich, quickly realizing there is NO sense of urgency at this place. After about 10 minutes, my sandwich was ready. I took it back to work since there's not seating inside. I realized it is rather large and had gotten soggy after not sitting long. Only one side of the bread is toasted. The sandwich tasted great. The bacon is both sweet and spicy, more chewy than crisp. The tomato was awesome - it tasted like it was fresh picked from a garden! The avocado was a great addition, as was the garlic aioli. Sadly, the butter lettuce was wilted after being place directly on top of the hot bacon. I didn't get any sides because they looked like they had been sitting for a while (many had gotten darker on top, like they hadn't even been stirred in a while). Overall, I liked the BLT but I doubt I ever return. I don't mind paying $8.99 for a great lunch but with a lack of good service, it's not worth my time. read more

Just tried Joe's for the first time and had a great experience all the way around. Although I was a little confused on which counter to go to, I was quickly greeted and led to the right one. All of their sandwiches sound really good so I asked for help in deciding between the flank steak and torta. Although the younger guy behind the counter was hesitant to provide a suggestion, he quickly asked another guy who came to talk to me. He suggested the meatball (and I'll try that next time) but I explained the two I was choosing between. He gave me his suggestion and I decided to go with it...the chicken torta. I was very happy with the suggestion! The sandwich was REALLY good. There is an abundance of pulled chicken that has salsa verde on it. Just the perfect amount of heat that's cooled by the avocado, and the lettuce provides some crunch (for all you texture folks). The bread was amazing and the perfect vehicle to hold all of the ingredients. While I was eating, Joe (of said establishment) came out to ask about my experience...asking what I got, how it was, if there were any issues, etc... I really appreciated the focus on customer service and knew he was genuinely interested in my experience. I love local businesses and try to support them as much as possible anyways, but when people go out of their way to ensure their customers have a good experience...I will make sure to scream positive things from the rooftops so that everyone I know supports them (hence why I'm writing this from my car after leaving). This is probably my favorite sandwich shop. It is very unique being inside a butcher shop. The BLT is amazing.

They said the BLT would change my life and WOW!!! I will never be able to have a BLT again without missing this one. The best I have ever had. My sandwich was a very good size, but some of the people I was with ran a little smaller. So I'd definitely look in to that before you order if you're hungry! Ordered the BLT, it was beyond all expectations. There was plenty of bacon and it was perfectly cooked. the Lettuce was crisp and fresh. The Tomato was ripe and juicy. The avocado was a great touch to the sandwich, adding new flavor and texture. I was expecting a much smaller sandwich than I received, which was a great surprise.
