First time ever having the food I ordered it from grub huh. I got the meat Sampler so I could try multiple cuts of meat. Now I don't know if this is how they treat the delivery orders or what but ONLY A SMALL PORTION OF CHICKEN WAS EDIBLE! Everything else in the box was I kid you not FAT. Not meat FAT. What a great place! Felt like I was back in Nashville. I went for my free birthday meal (up to $12 off!) and got the two-meat plate. I chose sliced brisket and chopped brisket, and beet salad as my side. It comes with cornbread! The brisket was divine! I can't tell which one I liked more, but gun to my head, chopped! The beet salad sounds like it would be lame, but it was great! The sauces on the side were the perfect cherry on top. It was sweet that the manager came around and asked every table how everything is going. Definitely a fan, and thankful there's a good southern BBQ place around! read more

We have been wanting to try Joe's for several years, but never got there until recently. We received a gift card and decided to finally give Joe's a try. Upon entering it was not what I was expecting. It is cafeteria style serving and seating. Nothing wrong with it at all, but I just thought it would be different. After reviewing the menu, I decided on the pulled pork sandwich and mac-n-cheese for my side. I grabbed my tray,and my plate was up very quickly. The bun was piled high, and came with pickle slices. One thing I noticed was that there was not much BBQ sauce on my sandwich, and was disappointed until after we were seated and I realized that there was extra sauce up by the beverage dispenser. After adding more sauce to my sandwich I took a bite and it was ok. I thought that the pork was just a tad dry, but overall it was okay. The mac-n-cheese was creamy and good. I finished it off with a glass of their homemade root beer. Overall it was a good experience and we will be back to try other selections on the menu such as the loaded baked potato! read more

I am not sure how it is possible that I have not written a review of Joe's in all my years in Phoenix and on Yelp. I have been eating here since I was in college back in 2003, when I was attending classes at the Williams Gateway ASU Polytechnic campus. I think in the last 15 years or so I have easily eaten here at least 60 times. I love this place. I am a huge fan of BBQ, and until Rudy's came along this was my number one go to for great BBQ in the valley. Now my list is 1) Rudy's 2)Joes 3)AZ BBQ Co. My wife always get the Baker covered in brisket which is absolutely huge! Love the salt they roll it in! The sides are pretty good, but I'm not a huge fan of the Cheese Nips flavored Mac N Cheese. Really, mac n cheese covered with crushed Cheese Nips or Cheese It's. That's just wrong man. They make up for it with the traditional potato salad they do, and the pulled pork though but where they excel is their ribs. Mmmm Mmmmm Mmmmm!! Lastly, they have the best, and I mean THE BEST lemon cake in the entire valley! I always get it when I am there, and would buy it by the pan if they would sell it that way! This place is more than just a staple of the neighborhood. It's more than just a family tradition. They have been there since before the gentrification of the neighborhood. I remember when that's all there was in the downtown area, surrounded by a few dusty store fronts. Now you go down there and they are surrounded by a gazillion restaurants with more opening every day. Joe put up a new taco shop next door with an angry beaver on top of it, which is cute, but overall when I am seeing all the hipsters ignoring Joes to go to The Culinary Dropout I can only shake my head at them. They don't know what they are missing in their efforts to be seen at the newest trendiest joints. Cornbread was out of this world and the staff at the front of the serving line or young girls that were nice friendly and professional. However, they get three stars because they're not following health code. Dirty rags hanging on carts were being used to clean tables. If you're the manager and read this heads up. Also, your bus staff were standing huddled next to our table. How do you know conversation? I'll be polite not say what they were talking about. Regardless, they need a little more training. Your food gets five stars your staff at the front of the restaurant five stars. The restaurant overall three stars for the gross and disgusting rags used on tables. I came in haven't been there for a while and had a to go dinner, and I asked if I could have cocktail sauce to eat with the catfish and I was told by two of the waitresses that it only comes with the shrimp and I didn't understand why I couldn't have cocktail sauce instead of the tartar sauce that they had I asked to speak to a manager and I could hear him telling them just give her some cocktail sauce, and I thought my goodness they were just making it so difficult that I get home very disappointed no utensils to eat with and no butter for the cornbread or my corn on the cob so I feel this place has gone down. Love going to this downtown favorite, Joe's family has stop roots here. They are super generous on your birthday so a must go then. The stuffed bake has always been a favorite with a jumbo potato loaded with all the fixings and meat on top. Their Mac n Cheese is hard to beat, always a favorite. I'm a fan of the cheesy potatoes with the right amount of green chili's in it. The meats are all well done, really can't go wrong, the line out the door speaks volumes. read more

Always a pleasure to visit and eat at Joes. Decided to take my wife and son out tonight for some good bbq as I needed protein! Well with the 4 meat sampler you are going to get a lot of protein. Joes has been a staple institution in downtown Gilbert for years and they just recently renovated the outside and I side (along with adding TOPO in the side yard where it used to be just be picnic tables before). Joe has also expanded his menu adding new sides (citrus salad / jackfruit sandwiches / bbq chicken salads and a few others) alongside their go to meat selection. They have also added alcoholic beverages and a new redesigned soda fountain area that is much more convenient than the previous version. They still have the tractor in front and he ambiance of Joes but updated with great easy to read digital signs and nicer accent walls where the food is being prepared. The line extends beyond the guide rails but don't let that deter you from getting some food here. There is plenty of seating everywhere! If the weather permits, outside seating is available and provides a lot of additional seating. This is one of those restaurants where you find seating wherever you find it. The menu is pretty simple because BBQ is usually pretty simple. You have your ribs, brisket, pulled pork, sausage, and some others. If you come here as a party of 4, get the $59 platter for 4. I forgot the name of it but it gives you a good variety of meats and sides. I can tell you that after finishing my portion, I was both happy and full! On to the taste. The meats were great! The highlight of the meal was the brisket. It was smokey but not overwhelming on the BBQ sauce. It had a nice natural taste of the pork which I liked. The sauce on the ribs was good too. It was slightly sweet and the ribs were easy to eat clean down to the bone. The pulled pork was... well it was pulled pork. Can't go wrong with that. The sausage had a good taste as well with a nice snap of the casing as you take your bite into it. The sides I got were the Mac n cheese, baked potato, and salad. The Mac was delicious. The baked potato was pretty normal except that it was huge and was easily split into four good sized portions. The salad was tasty as well. I called to try and resolve the problem and was told "Sorry" not even an offer to replace the one item that was the worst next visit. Too bad so sad. I had even asked when I place my to go order to check the "jumbo" potato as I had gotten ones that were over cooked and old the last couple visits. For $9 I think it should be large and cooked correctly. When I picked up the order I aske the other person was the potato for sure good and she said yes. I got home - we live about an hour away and the potato was wrapped in foil that didn't look to have been opened and the skin was so hard I couldn't hardly cut it with a steak knife. I called and asked for someone who could help me with a problem form the day before and they took my order number and about 4 -5 minutes later manager Michael got on the phone and said he was sorry and that they had tried to call me up - not true as I immediately returned to the counter in the 3-4 minutes it took for them to put the order together. No one tried to call me up. He said he was sorry but I guess the years we've been coming there mean nothing. I also told him the pulled pork had some strands that were 5-6" long and I had to cut it with kitchen shears when I got home. Their food is normally awesome and the beans are really good but I doubt we will go again in a long time if ever. Amazing bbq...brisket was by far the juiciest and most flavorful...the sampler feast we ordered was just perfect for a family of 4...we even had left overs...the homemade root beer float comes in a Viking size mug so plenty to share...the lemon cake had just the right balance of tartness and sweetness...a very delicious dinner...friendly and helpful staff, plenty of space spread out for outdoor dinning and social distancing...would definitely go back for the brisket...yummy! read more

sadly. company has gone downhill. foods tasteless, employees act like they hate their jobs, and managers clearly don't care. this place used to be good.. you can tell the awful morale of this place has affected the company. Reality of Joes is this.. your going to spend 50+ dollars for maybe good BBQ.. Joes is very inconsistent and food tastes different every time. So just double check your food before you leave because you may be either missing something from your order completely or the food is not worth paying for. Employees on the other hand roll their eyes when you order and you can hear them gossiping about you through the takeout window. I've sadly never had a good experience with any employees here. Stopped by here since I got a job in the area. The service is really good. You stand in line and move through really quick. The open area assures you will have plenty of places to sit. I have tried the chicken, turkey, ham and sausage. These meats were all really good and kicked A$$. The baked beans and cornbread is really good too. I am looking forward to coming back. read more
