Called to place a to-go order and when they picked up I was immediately put on hold. This place definitely looks a bit sketch on the outside, and it didn't help that there was several questionable folks loitering sound in the parking lot. I walked inside and they didn't have my food quite ready but they were very nice in asking if I wanted something to drink. We went back home and the order was right, which was amazing because I didn't even check the order before I left, but I should've since it was my first visit. The food was amazing and a great price! The fried shrimp was made from cornmeal and I loved that! It added a crunchy flavor and it was spectacular. I randomly stopped here and ordered fried catfish, fried shrimp, and french fries cause I was craving them and didn't know what else to do. I could've suppressed the craving for all those calories and fat, but then that wouldn't be me lol. The guy behind the counter was super friendly. I ordered and then just chopped it up with him while I waited for my food. The food itself was okay. Not bad, but not great. The styrofoam to go plate it came in had holes in the lid. At first that didn't sit right with me, but a friend told me they do that on purpose to let the steam out or something. I don't know, but I prefer my plates without holes. They definitely give generous portions! The crawfish fried rice was amazing! My husband really enjoyed his pepper steak, but said he wished that the bell pepper wasn't quite so largely cut. Their fried shrimp was really good, as well as their cocktail sauce. We really liked the food, but the young woman at the cash register rolled her eyes every time someone would come in the door (granted it was 8:30pm, but they didn't close until 10, and everyone in there was ordering to go.) Yeah, I know its nothing fancy and most people probably wouldn't even stop if they drove by, but TRUST me on this one, guys. It is the shiznit. So if you've read any of my reviews, you know I loves me some catfish. And that I complain a lot about places that don't know how to get a simple fried fish right. NOT SO with Joe's, their catfish is the bomb. period. The bf and I were recently in New Orleans and he even he remarked that Joe's seasoning and ability to fry were way better than what we had there. And New Awlins can definitely make some fish in my opinion, so that's a hell of a compliment. I always get a 2pc or 3pc catfish with fries, comes with a slice of bread and a little salad. You an also substitute rice and gravy for the fries. Their menu consists of shrimp, oyster, fish, or combination platters; chicken platters (strips, popcorn chick, nuggets, gizzards, livers, wings, whatever); fried rice plates (huge quantity) and other chinese foods like sweet & sour chicken and pepper steak; and other specialties like crawfish tails, gumbo or etouffe. Everything I've had here is good, although I hate the bread they use for the poboy (not french bread! tragedy!). You can sit in the restaurant to eat or get it take out. My 2 favorite things about this restaurant: the customer service, as they are all VERY friendly and always remember my order as soon as I call in with my name. The good: The catfish and shrimp were solid and an okay value. The filets were good sized and the fish tasted fresh and the cornmeal batter was classic and good. The shrimp were consistent with the fish. The disappointment: The fried crab my girlfriend ordered was foul smelling and tasting. Something wasn't right. I just split my fish and shrimp and we abandoned the crab. The tea tasted bleh as well. Not sure if perhaps the tea kettle and storage was overdue for a deep cleaning or the source water was nasty. Overall you can tell if a mom and pop place (aka dive) is clean and well run, but basic. Joe's left me feeling like perhaps the health inspector might find more than a few flaws. Ok, I don't like reviewing places I've only been to once, but since I don't go to Galveston that often, it's unlikely I'll be back again anytime soon. First, the atmosphere of the place. It looks like an abandoned gas station. But it's not! It is actually a populated, repurposed abandoned gas station. Big difference. We parked right next to the entrance, and found -- I'm not kidding here -- a pair of black thong underwear just outside my car door in the parking lot. So ... if you go here frequently and have lost a pair of black thong underwear, there it is. (I did not pick it up. With any luck, it's still there waiting for you.) I guess what I'm saying is, unless you're taking some hot OCD girl on a first date with the intention of impressing her with how free and wild she can be with you, or a hipster who ironically appreciates the atmosphere, this isn't exactly going to impress anyone. Oh, one other person who might be impressed. People who appreciate good, cheap seafood. The food was good. The batter was lightly seasoned and crispy. Our fish and shrimp tasted fresh. All seemed to be prepared with professionalism and attention to detail, as it was placed into our styrofoam boxes. The food was much better than Captain D's or Long John Silver's. I can't directly compare it to my favorite seafood place ever, because that's more of a tuna-steak kind of place and not a fried shrimp po-boy. Maybe I need to try it a few more times, and on the basis of the other reviews I may, but so far it just seems like a good, cheap seafood restaurant, and not some mecca of fried seafood goodness. read more

I would eat here again if their prices were less than the other good places but they were not. My husband had the Chinese noodles. It was a ton of food and could feed a lot. It was fairly good. The fried catfish was pretty good but the coleslaw lacked. The fried chicken wings are very good. There were other places locally that were better like Shrimp and Stuff. It is located in an old gas station which is fine with me. It was kinda adventurous. The place was pretty clean. I am not sure I would eat here again because it was $ and there are better places for the $. The people are very nice and friendly. I would say try it and give your opinion. Don't let the exterior fool you. The food here is pretty good. I had the fried catfish, fried oysters, and fried shrimp platter. The catfish portions were large and well seasoned fillets. The oysters and shrimps were fried perfectly with good seasoning. I would have rated it higher but the fries where soggy and bland. (Go figure.) This place is a little whole in the wall and the actual restaurant is not very appealing. I just ordered something to go. I had shrimp, onion rings and potato salad. All very good and the shrimp and onion rings not greasy at all! The breaded shrimp were well seasoned and perfect. The stuffed crab and shrimp were so flavorful and delicious. Had a delicious meal of Fried Shrimp (although I'm not a big fan of fried foods, this meal was delicious!) here, although I was hesitant to go in because of the Spartan appearance of the place. However, some of my best meals were in dive-looking places while some of my worst were in "High End" restaurants. Just goes to show you can't judge a book by its cover or a restaurant by its decor.
