My hair has changed dramatically since Joey came into my life (about two years ago). I'm always excited when I come to see her not only because she actually understands curly hair, but because I know she's not afraid to make bold suggestions and help me push myself out of my comfort zone. I leave her chair with a different haircut every time and I LOVE that. On my last visit, I decided I wanted to start growing it out a bit, and Joey was great about setting me up so my curls will grow out nicely. Since I first came to Joey when I lived in the city, I've graduated, moved to Sacramento, and - still - I continue to go back to her for my regular hair cut every couple months for one simple reason: she's the best. San Francisco, Oakland, wherever she is, that's where I'll be to get my hair done. I have long, thick, wavy hair, and I'm deeply attached to it. Sadly, not everyone knows how to handle so much hair. Unlike most people, Joey doesn't just take a razor to it and thin it out every time. She's patient, she's got an incredible eye to know what suits my face, and a great hand at making my hair come to life. Over the years, she's become a trusted confidant and friend. Whenever I feel the need to a change, she endures my indecisiveness and accepts the challenge when I turn it over to her capable hands. Joey is really skilled and a fantastic person. Many, many of my queer friends simply adore her work. But I have two important caveats that other ringlety-to-kinky-curly folks should know first. 1) It doesn't say so on the website when you do the booking, but if you request a Ouidad cut (the East Coast equivalent of the DevaCut) via the website to indicate you have curly hair, it costs $125, not the usual $80. 2) Despite clearly having curly hair training, you need to know that she cuts off way more than she thinks she does. Like 3 to 4 inches more. She does not seem to understand how much shrinkage really curly hair has, or how longer pieces in front will stick out on the sides, not hang down like wavy hair does. For the first haircut, the instruction for length in the back was that pony tails still need to be possible. Nope. For the second haircut she did, after looking at a photo of what was wanted, she confirmed that she was doing a "shoulder-grazing cut," but the result was cheekbone-length (mid-face) cut. It's Louise Brooks length, not a Tracee Ellis Ross longish bob, and that's a really big difference. Luckily, the hair cut is totally adorable, but I'm afraid there's no quick touch up fix for a cut that's too short. There's nothing to do but wait months for it to grow out, and it was not what was agreed upon either time--and that's what all curly-haired folks (especially mixed folks) fear in a hair cut done by someone who doesn't have super curly hair (especially a non-African American stylist). So even though Joey is a curly-hair specialist, curly folks must be very emphatic about length and say you want it longer than you do. Then, if it's actually too long, you can go get the touch up she offers for free. Joey is a queer role model, really kind, and gives great style, but I had to take off two stars for being pricey and not as curl-friendly as advertised. read more

I was relieved to find someone who specializes in queers and curls and who could understand that I wanted to keep my hair long but in a masculine way. She was very communicative about how much she needed to cut off due to my dry ends and got my consent in the process. She is cool and friendly and I really enjoyed our conversations. Today was my first appointment with Joey. She has a cute, clean, nicely decorated home salon. Prior to my first appointment, she asked for pictures of previous haircuts that I liked and/or pictures of styles that I like. When I arrived, I texted her per her instructions. She cleans between clients. She texted me to come in when she was ready for me. When you enter, you first wash your hands. Both she and I had our masks on the entire time. First we looked at the pictures and I appreciated that she listened to my preferences. Then she and I discussed what she will do and how that fits into my long term plans of growing out my very short hair. Joey gave me the best haircut of my life. I have hair with hidden curl that looks best long but loses its shape without a good cut. But with a good cut, woohoo, it can be excellent, sexy hair. Joey brought back my sexy hair. In terms of overall length, she only cut off about three inches, but it's as if she found each individual curl and freed it to be its best self. This is what happens when you go to Joey: You tell her what you want, and then she gives you even better than what you expected. The haircut she gave me in February lasted me months with an excellent grow-out. Due to the pandemic, I hadn't had a haircut in almost a year, so my hair was a total mess. I badly needed it cut, but didn't want to lose all the length I'd gained, and wanted to try something new. At the same time, I was worried about exposure and didn't know how to articulate what kind of style I was looking for. When I heard of Joey on social media, I was immediately intrigued. She seemed professional, sensitive, cautious, and experienced, and she was. I booked an appointment, and before anything else, Joey asked me about my hair, my style, my desired maintenance routine, all with incredible warmth. She offered a few possibilities for what she thought would work well in me, and I chose the more daring option, a shaggy cut that would show off my curls. She also demonstrated, quite thoroughly, how to style and maintain it at home. It was the best haircut experience of my life, and I really can't recommend Joey enough. I sport a short cut year round, and going to Joey was a fantastic experience. I've gotten so many compliments from this cut. She also gave me bangs that I've Never had before. I wasn't sure how this would go down, but everyone has told me how good my hair looks, so I'm going to say it went down well. Even my male coworkers have complimented my haircut. When men notice your hair and actually say something, I think that's a huge sign that you have a slammin' haircut. One of my biggest regrets: discovering Joey right about the time I decided to leave San Francisco. I had gone to so many places and spent an arm and a leg on a basic cut and then I walked into see Joey on a whim and I just knew she was gonna GET me. Highly recommended, especially if you have complicated/curly hair! Joey did the first-ever big cut on my hair, last summer when I didn't really know what I wanted. She helped me figure it out, did not cut off more than I asked for (something I was worried about with any new stylist), and I went back in for an even shorter cut a couple of months ago. It looks great. She really figured out what was going on with my semi-wavy, semi-curly hair, and cut it in a way that worked with what happens naturally. And--she totally listened when I told her how low-maintenance I am. Just shampooing and putting in leave-in conditioner leaves my hair looking like I fussed over it with a curler and dryer, even though I didn't. I'm beyond happy. I think I found my newest stylist!!! I moved from SF to Oakland several years ago and have been trying to find someone who knew curly hair. Joey's name was recommended to me and started popping up in my instagram account (of all places!!!). I went for a haircut. . .last one was like 1.5 years ago. After searching for the right person (2 stylist before Joey) I finally found the one. "The one" because I am super picky as I am sure everyone else out there is as well. She truly is! She was referred to me by a friend over a year ago and ever since then its been true love, hehehe! Joey really takes her time with you from the minute you walk in. On her initial visit she will jot down all your information so each time you go back she will remember exactly what you had. This has made my visit with her extremely easy to explain what I want each time I go back. She listens, she will ask questions until you are sure you both are on the same page. I was just starting to grow my hair out from a pixie cut when Joey became my stylist. It's now past my collar bone, and somehow, thanks to Joey, I never got that awkward inbetween stage. How!? I have no idea. My hair is really thick and curly and I sure to have a heck of a time finding stylists who know what to do with me. Since Joey's cuts are always so flattering and manageable, I figured big, curly hair was her specialty, but THEN my boyfriend went to see her and he has fine, very straight hair. We both look amazing (if that's not too conceited to say--I'm just being honest). She always remembers what styles I like and offers the best suggestions ever.
