I found Joey through an ad in the Guardain. I was wanting a new, healthy, cut. I have long hair and wanted to maintain length. My first appointment with her she asked me some questions about how I style my hair. I love to wash and go, and occasionally straighten my hair. I had been asking friends on Faceook about different potential hairstyles, my entire life I have had long boring flat hair, and last summer I got it cut super short, but that stylist was afraid to do anything funky. When my hair inexplicably went from straight to curly over the course of a couple years, I had to re-learn how to take care of it and style it. Recommended to me by several friends, I realized that I should've been dropping some bucks to get it done right all along. She's now seen me go from the Dolores Park emo asymmetrical cut to a more adult blow-dry thing, but she's always understood what I was looking for. This review is long overdue but I feel that I have to write it, as she definitely deserves it. I found Joey on an unlikely whim 3 long years ago. I was searching Yelp for a hair stylist in the Castro that was good with curly hair and found someone that came highly recommended at Notorious for Hair. When I called to make an appointment, I was sad to learn that she (not Joey) was no longer working there. The nice person on the phone recommended Joey, and gave me her phone number to call to make an appointment. Boy, was I glad that I made that call. I have been going to Joey for over 3 years now - exclusively. Now, let me just start off by saying that the salon is not a fancy/snooty type of place at all. If you are looking for fancy/snooty ambiance (and sometimes mediocre hair services), look elsewhere. Personally, as long as they have something to read while I wait and do a good job...I am happy. I am reviewing Joey though, not the salon. Now, on to our girl: My hair is nautrally (very) curly so for the majority of my life, I have been getting terrible haircuts. In fact, there was a time that I would get my hair cut maybe once ever year to year and a half to avoid the sadness of yet another hack-job. Understandably, I was very nervous when I went to see Joey for my first appointment 3 years ago. I liked her immediately though. I know that you are not supposed to judge a person by how they look but let's face it - we all take note of first impressions, right? I loved that she had tattoos and was in a cute 50's style dress and little apron. She greeted me with a smile and asked me to wait a few minutes as she finished up with her client (I was 15 minutes early). When my turn came, she sat me down in her chair, asked me several questions about what products I maintain my hair with and how I style my hair. She played with it, tousled it and showed it love. I explained my hair cutting fears (mainly about losing length and looking like a mushroom-head) and she put me at ease explaining that she would cut some long layers in to give my hair some shape. Shape? Shape???? I hadn't realized that my hair could have something known as shape! She made me feel good, so I let her do her thing - all the while watching the floor to hair ratio that was frightening me ever so slightly. In the end, my cut came out beautiful. I'm serious...gorgeous. I could not believe that it was my hair. It also felt 10 lbs lighter! After that, I started getting haircuts about 2 times a year (I went from less than 1 time a year so this was an improvement). Fast forward to December 2009 - I had just gotten my first Keratin (hair straightening) Treatment and was excited at the prospect of having an entirely new hairdo with my silky, straight hair. Something that I have never had before: bangs! Well...I had a short, curly, embarassing stint with them in the 80's but let's not get into that... Anyway, my hair was generally all one length - except for the layers - and I wanted a big change. I found some pictures of rocker-ish style straight across cut bangs that I liked but was not sure if they would look good. I went to see my hair genious and she made my hair amazing - again - in a few short minutes. I had only booked a bang trim with her so I made an appointment for a cut and she reshaped my hair in it's new form. She really is amazingly talented, regardless of what texture your hair is. I can personally attest to that. She had so much fun with the new cut once my hair was straight and as always, it looked fantastic. Like others have said in many of the reviews, she really does care that you look and feel good about your hair. I have referred countless friends to her (curly and straight headed) and will continue to do so. Anyway, stop reading these reviews and just book an appointment already! You will not be disappointed. I would really like to be able to take off a star for being rather expensive but, in good conscience, must factor in that we live in a major metropolitan area. I was in a little bit of a hair funk a year or so ago and found Joey on Yelp... good reviews.. decent price.. not too far away .. good availability.. I'll try her out! I went in not having any idea what I really wanted. She suggested a shag.. I never would have thought of getting a shag but what the hell.. And that was the beginning of a beautiful relationship.. haha.. The shag was AWESOME and I could wash and go for the first time in a LONG time. She totally got my hair (probably the first person to) it's fine/curly/wavy/frizzy-straightish hair and she always manages to give me a cut that works and is fun. I've probably had 5 or 6 cuts with her and every one of them I've been able to wear curly and straight. My sister now goes to her religiously for cuts and color also. Her cuts are really well priced - she spends a good amount of time helping you figure out what you want and executes flawlessly. For something edgy, I wouldn't go elsewhere at this point. I've been to Joey twice now and both times have gotten huge compliments on my hair. Here's what happened: I went in asking for something funky, but not so funky that I couldn't get away with it in a professional work setting (I've had my heart set on a mohawk for awhile, but alas, consulting wouldn't allow it). So the last time I got my hair cut I was really upset. I paid good money and felt like I was given a quick trim. My hair didn't even look any different from when I went in to when I came out. JOEY is amazing! Not only did she save my hair color, but I have never had such sweet hair cut in my life. If you want to look awesome every day but never thought you could... go see Joey! My COLOR backstory: I had been dying my hair almost-black for 2 years. Its naturally light brown, and I have been trying to slowly get back to that shade for months. I had been to multiple high-priced "experts" who promised that they would be able to lift it... but the opposite actually happened! it went darker. I thought my hair would never be anything but black-brown! And thats when the magic that is JOEY came into my life. We talked for about 30 minutes on JUST my hair color.
