My wife and I recently hosted our families and friends for our rehearsal dinner at John J Jeffries and the best way to describe the evening was simply top-notch! From the start to the end of the event, the service was friendly, attentive and responsive to our group's every need. The food itself was spectacular and I am still dreaming about how good the Pork Belly Love appetizer was! The cocktails we ordered were also quite good and the overall ambiance of the event space is understated yet elegant. One of my favorite features was being able to take advantage of the lovely patio space for a cocktail hour style opening which helped everyone loosen up and enjoy each other's company before sitting down for the formal dinner. All in all, this was a truly fantastic evening and hassle-free experience. The event coordinator, Ladan, was very helpful in arranging logistics and in helping us plan the event. Celebrated my daughter's 21st birthday here and so glad we did! From appetizers to dessert everything was phenomenal.. super fresh and delicious! We loved the atmosphere and especially hanging in the lobby of the hotel afterwards looking through the art books where the guests contribute a sketch, drawing or message of some sort. Went here Friday night, just after getting in town. Didn't do enough homework... we were the only ones with a kid here. Our 2.5 year old is very well behaved so it wasn't a problem, but looking around it's not a place you'd find kids. No kids menu. Atmosphere and table settings on the fancier side. OK...so that was just some notes on our evening. On the the review. We decided to go small plates since we order to try many flavors. We orders 6 dishes (little too much for two people) and 3 were special, while the other 3 were nothing special but very well done and tasty. The three special plates were ( in order of favs): 1. Pork belly - perfectly crisped with awesome grits and a sweet cran/rasp sauce. I'm big on pork belly and it's prep, and was afraid the grits and sauce would overpower it. But it was perfectly balanced. 2. Pumpkin butternut squash bisque. Man, the seasoning and garnish was just perfect. Seems like a dish that you find at so many places in fall, but his one is elevated. 3. The soft tacos were packed with flavor. Braised meat was cooked perfectly. The garnishments were bright and fresh. The best part was the authentic.. must have been hand rolled in house, tortillas. If you've ever had a hand made corn tortilla from Mexico, this is what they taste like. Adds a whole-nother dimension to what would be a great taco otherwise. Side note: Great date spot! read more

There aren't enough nice things that can be said about John J. Jeffries. Truly. My appreciation for this establishment only continues to grow, despite long absences between pop ins (which really should be addressed on my part, come to think of it...). In fact, my recent visit with my husband impressed me so much, here I am on Yelp for the first time in ages to talk it up to all you fine folks reading this review. Hubs and I just celebrated our first anniversary as a married couple. Contemplating our options, we decided to take a little road trip down to Lancaster to visit JJJ, and I am so glad we decided to trust our special occasion to them. Beyond being extremely sweet and accommodating (even after we pushed our reservation back and were still a bit late at peak time on a Saturday), everyone was just so... nice! What an odd thing to have to remark upon, but everyone, from the managers to the front of the house staff, were genuinely kind. We were told "Happy Anniversary" from essentially everyone who encountered us that evening - such a lovely, unexpected touch, but deeply appreciated. Beyond that, of the food and service, JJJ is the rare Central PA establishment that manages the delicate balancing act of keeping their libation game as on-point as the kitchen's. You won't find a poorly-mixed cocktail or wine pairing on their list, and as much as I've come to wince when I hear "farm to table" talk bandied about like supplication for a gold star at other establishments, John J. Jeffries has not only pioneered this concept, they've continued to quietly turn out exceptional dishes that recognize and celebrate the glorious Lancaster food system of which they are an active, supportive part. And none of it disappoints, from the local braised lamb shank to the house-made kimchi on the Jim Bim Bap, all served with a smile and not a whiff of pretension. A three star doesn't mean it was awful. In my opinion this three star just means the place didn't have any huge flaws, but also did not impress at any point. Bar menu was nice in the sense that they support both local wineries and breweries. However, the wine list is short and the by the glass list even shorter. I should be struggling between what glass of wine to pair, not what type of wine is actually good. Small plates were nice, enjoy the selection, tasted good, but definitely no stand out or complex flavors in our octopus salad or pumpkin soup. Entree selection was nice because of the farm to table aspect, but if you can't serve something with unique or great flavor then what is the point. Pumpkin (and some other flavor) risotto was a mushy mess with no reason to call it any but just plain "risotto". Venison was good, but got completely weighed down by curry. I love curry. But come on... give me more than just one flavor. Dry-aged beef of the day was a chuck roast. You know, the kind you can buy dirt cheap at any store?? If it's a farm to table you can find me a different or more flavorful cut? This had zero flavor, but we should have know that when ordering. It came with steamed unseasoned broccoli and fried potatoes. Nothing surpassed anything I could buy on my own or make on a Sunday. Lastly, pumpkin rice pudding with maple syrup over sliced apples was the most average thing we had all night. Overall it was good, even though I seemed to be quite harsh, and while I probably won't go back, would not be surprised to continue seeing good reviews. Worst service in the 21 years my wife and I have been dining out.......WE WALKED OUT in the middle of the 2nd of our 4 course dinner.......first time we EVER did that....and hopefully the last.....we where treated despicably! Okay, here are the details....way back in January - around the 9th - I realized Valentines was on a Friday so to try something new, great and exciting I booked a room at the connecting hotel and made reservations at JJJ...so far so good. Fast forward to Wednesday, Feb 12th.....JJJ calls to confirm my reservation and inform me that the usual menu will not apply as they where featuring a 4 course meal each paired w/wine at the price of $109.00 pp.....I called back to confirm we'd be there. So, we arrive at the hostess station at 6:30 exactly per our reservation and we are seated by a 9 or 10 year old girl who seems rather clueless. She leads us through the bar and into the dining area to a table which has my wife and I no more than 10 - 15 feet directly in front of and facing the double swing open kitchen doors....this slightly bothered us but we where determined to enjoy the night, so we rotated our chairs 90 degrees to face the dining room and made our minds up to 'block out' the noise from the kitchen and it doors. The waitress came over and apologized for our seating location and re-arranged the silverware/napkins etc... The wife and I order Bombay Saphire Martini's and after 10 minutes they finally arrive and we enjoy. After enjoying the good Martini's the first course arrives at our table and something seems amiss. They brought my wife the wrong selection..in fact, they brought her the wrong course??? So we wait 3 - 5 minutes for our waitress to show up and she does promptly return with the selection my wife ordered. The wife and I briefly discuss the mix up and move on with enjoying the food and evening......until, that is, the second course wine and food arrive. So the server brings our wine out and gives my wife the wine I ordered and gives me the wine my wife ordered. My wife and I chuckle and switch the glasses ourselves...no big deal, but we do talk about the trend in service mistakes. A few minutes after the wine is served, they bring us our 2nd course selections and proceed to make the EXACT SAME MISTAKE that they made in the first course. Yes, once again, they brought my wife the wrong selection AND course...so now it's no longer funny and I am hot under the collar. I waived the waitress over and when she arrived at the table I told her that if they brought my wife the wrong food one more time that I would give her "zero tip". Now instead of showing she was at all sorry, she smiled and laughed. At this point I reminded her that we where paying a lot of money to be there and deserved a lot better than this. I went on to ask her why we had the worst table in the restaurant even though we made the reservations 5 weeks earlier. She said the manager would be right over to speak with us. I was mad now. I told her "good, send him over so I can cus him out". No, I would not have really cusssd him out and actually, my wife praised me for my control and effectiveness in enunciating our concerns. Well, after several minutes the manager never came over and we realized we had lost our appetites....so we got up and left - walked right by our waitress on the way out of there. The wife and I did everything we could to make it a special evening. New suit for me and a new Valentines Red dress for my wife. Unfortunately, the John J Jeffries restaurant did everything they could to make our experience miserable and they succeeded. read more

If I were wrongly accused of a crime and sentenced to death, I would choose to eat my last meal at John J. Jeffries. My boyfriend and I chose Lancaster, PA as the mini-vacation location to spend our 5 year anniversary. We chose this rural destination partly after reading the description of JJJ on their website and promptly made a reservation on my second favorite website OpenTable.com. Although we're city kids through and through, everyone can use a little R&R--and we were both long overdue for some fresh cut grass, cows, trees, and nature in general. The promise of local, organic fare had our mouths watering the whole car ride there! Now onto the actual review of this restaurant! I literally cannot say enough positive things about our experience. When we arrived, we took some time to enjoy the Lancaster Arts Hotel lobby and make small talk with the concierge. The location is pristine and the decor, tasteful. It was clear this was one of the "hipper" spots in this small town. We will absolutely stay here next time around, but that's a separate review best meant for tripadvisor.com (my third favorite website). We took a walk past the well appointed bar, where we would have been happy to pull up a chair and have a drink. The bartender was courteous and friendly and waved us on the hostess. She was equally as friendly, welcomed us to the restaurant and brought us to our table. It was so hot outside that there was a threat of thunderstorms. Because of this, we were forced to sit inside, however this was hardly an inconvenience. After we settled in, a woman approached (presumably the manager) who wanted to thank us for joining them, wish us a happy anniversary, and offer us a complimentary glass of champagne to start the evening! What a delight! We felt like royalty (and/or internet celebrities). As she made her way back to the bar area, our server, Andrew approached. He instantly won us over. He was charming, informative, personable and the utmost professional. It was clear he was very familiar with the menu and he was a true master of fine dining service. The drink menu was extensive, fresh, and changed daily. We both selected signature cocktails which it turned out had just been added to the menu that evening. They were perfection. We started with the Asparagus Soup and Surf + Turf Ceviche (for him). The soup was so good I refused to share and ate the entire bowl with my eyes closed so I could properly process every bite. Andrew's adorable and sweet assistant brought us fresh bread and an interesting "slaw" which was scrumptious. Our entrees came, perfectly prepared steak for me, and pork for him. The meals far exceeded our expectations as did the service and atmosphere. All the while Andrew is offering us recommendations of things to do and places to see--something I appreciated much more than he'll ever know! We were so full after dinner I thought we would be forced to refuse dessert but when we saw flourless chocolate cake on the menu we couldn't resist. We rounded out the evening with this deliciously sweet sensation and an after dinner drink--a Riesling for me which came as the perfect recommendation. When the check finally arrived we were sad that the evening was over. Everyone was so gracious, hospitable, and welcomed us to enjoy ourselves for as long as we wished to stay. There aren't a ton of vegetarian-friendly restaurants in Lancaster County, but I given the reputation for organic and sustainable food, I assumed John J. Jefferies would be better than most. Unfortunately not. As other reviewers have mentioned, the menu is divided into small plates and large plates (entrees). There are 4 vegetarian options for small plates -- soup, caesar salad, green salad, and "pizza". There was one large plate, creatively named "vegetarian entree". When a restaurant can't even be bothered to name a dish, you have to assume they aren't putting any effort into making it. It involved quinoa and asparagus. Actually ALL of the non-meat dishes except the caeser salad involved asparagus, again evidence of the lack of creativity when it comes to vegetables. I ended up ordering the green salad and the pizza. The salad was fine but the pizza might have well be from DiGiorno's -- medicore at best. I was hugely disappointed by the whole experience. read more

AWESOME! i've eaten here at least two dozen times, and whenever i want to wow someone who's visiting lancaster, i recommend john j jeffries to them. however, i will say, this place is not for everyone. i think some people don't really "get" the point of john j jeffries. JJJ is a place with a unique ambiance, and they focus on providing fresh, sustainable, and preferably locally-sourced foods to the eaters of Lancaster. for people like me who are really into the "buy fresh, buy local" movement, and who have a long-standing love affair with historical buildings, JJJ really hits the spot in a way no other restaurant does. one thing i really love about this place is that they provide fine dining quality food without the usual pretentiousness that goes hand in hand with "fine dining." often, i find "fine dining" to place a lot more emphasis on ambiance than food quality. i personally don't enjoy having a waiter hovering over me waiting to scrape every crumb off the tablecloth, or nothing but dishes i can't pronounce on the menu. there's a very accessible aspect to this place that really appeals to me. also, one of the owners can be found there almost every friday and saturday night, and once you've become a regular, she really makes an effort to remember you and take a few moments to speak with you every time you visit. one time she even complimented me on my dress telling me that "green was a great color for me." it doesn't get any better than that! :-) and of course, the food. ohhhh, the food! the steak tartare is divine and to date, JJJ is the only place where i can stomach eating raw meat. their bisque selection changes monthly and i have yet to have a less than stellar bisque here. they're also very accommodating. also, they serve FRENCH PRESS COFFEE of impeccable quality, so coffee snobs everywhere can rejoice! one time, i brought a vegetarian friend with me, and there were no vegetarian options on the menu that appealed to her. so the chef came out and personally spoke with her, then whipped up a delightful wild mushroom risotto for her. again -- it doesn't get any better than that! :-) this restaurant is also very paleo-friendly. i know some people have complained about the service, but frankly, i don't know why. sure, on friday and saturday nights, when the place is packed to the gills, the waiters may be slightly inattentive, but i've never actually had that issue. i've always found the servers to be friendly, accommodating, and very knowledgeable about the menu. JJJ is the ultimate in farm to table fine dining, IMO! it's some of the finest food & ambiance Lancaster has to offer. i'm hoping to check out Maison soon, but JJJ will always be #1 in my mind :-) read more

Went here on Saturday night and I can say rarely does someplace exceed my expectations. We arrived early for our reservation coming from a movie and waited at the bar. The drink menu is very interesting in that there are a lot of ingredients, many of which I haven't had or heard of prior. I just went with a scotch but my lovely fiance chose a drink with a bit of everything. I don't recall the name but it had gin, rose water, champagne, some berry liquor and some juices. It was strong but very good. We were seated a few minutes after our reservation time and were greeted by a very friendly waiter. Jeremy, I think. I like to call out good servers by name when they deserve it. He was very busy but very friendly to everyone in the section and appeared to have fun while doing so. On to the food. We ordered the goat cheese stuffed portabella appetizer which was great. My only suggestion would be that be should be served cup up to hold more cheese rather than it turning into a sauce. Still quite good. We were also provided a taste of mushroom bisque as an amuse-bouche. It was out of this world and we agreed with the server that it needs to be on the menu. As for our entrees I ordered the pond raised duck legs that were served confit style that were very very good. I was a bit hesitant about only having the legs but the portion was substantial enough and the accompanying potatoes filled it out. The duck was very well prepared and delicious served with some reduction that I would have liked to have even more of on the plate. She ordered the Wild alaskan salmon which was served on a bed of rice mixed with a ton of other stuff. I tried a bite, of course, and wow! What a great preparation of a relatively simple dish. It was arguably the most flavorful salmon I've ever had. I actually liked her dish better than my own, and mine was pretty darn good. Her plate was empty, which says a lot considering I only had a couple bites. For dessert we split the strawberry cheesecake which was very light and a perfect ending to a great overall meal. I will say to those that might be apprehensive about the limited menu, rest assured the treatments of somewhat simple, local items are truly top notch. I also will say I think the price was very reasonable or even a value for the appetizer, entrees, drinks and dessert relative to the quality. My only note is that the corner off the bar in which we were sat was quite dark and upon arrival the host staff appeared a bit overwhelmed. It could have just been a bad time. Night two in Lancaster on business and we headed to the Art Hotel. I'd been hearing about this place since before we came in from New York. Lots of good things; one coworker even claimed this to be one of her top 5 favorite restaurants - EVER. I appreciated the decor - crisp, clean and cozy. Lots of unique art, appropriately, hangs on the walls. Crisp white tablecloths don the tables, which are nicely spread apart so you don't feel like you're on top of other diners. For a Tuesday night, there was a nice crowd, but it was by no means crowded. Another thing I really appreciate is their efforts to buy local and organic. I started off with the Farmers Market salad, which was nice. Then I moved onto the heart attack in a bowl - beef chili with fried eggs. WOW. It was stellar. Had a really nice kick to it and filled me up almost instantly (I barely finished half). The guys each had the beef tartar appetizer and were delighted. I started the night off with the Orange Crush martini (vanilla and orange vodka, my favorite), dinner was with a great glass of red (unfortunately not sure what it was), and finished off with the tawny port. We have been to JJJ several times and the food is always delicious, fresh and a great presentation. Recently we were there with our son and daughter-in-law for a special dinner. The ladies had salmon and scallops, which were absolutely delicious, cooked perfectly. However, the gentlemen had the special beef that evening (I think it was either a NY strip steak or a rib steak) and for $36 each, they should have been able to chew it. It was so tough...a very big disappointment. I appreciate JJJ using local ingredients because I think that is very important that we support local businesses. The beef aside, the rest of the meal was fantastic, but my husband is thinking he will not go back...could have gotten a much better steak for a lot less $ somewhere else. Yum!! This was our first time here, and everything about it was excellent. The service was great, and the waiter was patient, knowledgeable, and nice. I got the colonial margarita, which was really good!! The drink was definitely well crafted. My husband got the flank steak. He said it was delicious and, funny enough, that the potatoes it came with were the best potatoes he has ever had. He felt a bit weird saying that because potatoes are potatoes, right? Well, not here! They were the perfect marriage of crispy and soft. It's kind of hard to explain, so you'll just have to try it yourself! Fine dining done so impeccably well I swear the bars been raised quite high! My fiance and I celebrated her 30th birthday and it was hands down the best meal we've ever had! All of their meats are raised locally, confinement-free on fresh green grass pastures. No hormones, antibiotics, steroids or forced-fertilization occurs. Their produce is local organic or chemical free. They use local grass fed cream, butter and eggs. Even their water for drinking and cooking is filtered through an in-house carbon and reverse osmosis system.
