John Kelly is slowly becoming my monthly treat to myself when I'm walking around the neighborhood. It's a small, quaint shop with great customer service and even more incredible treats. They have individual chocolates for purchase along with curated boxes and bars. Another customer recommended the semisweet Dubai bar and I haven't looked back since. The prices are above average, but the quality is absolutely there. I highly recommend trying them if you're in the area. read more

SO good. I got an assortment from here as a gift (fresh ones not prepacked) and WOW. Sea salt chocolate, the two caramels, a few toffees were all amazing. I had always wanted to get the chocolate dipped dried fruit as a gift and this holiday season I finally made it out to this fancy chocolate shop. The pineapple one was bland but the orange slice had great flavor and the apricot had great texture. I also enjoyed their chocolate truffle samples. This review is for the product not the store. Am I stuck in a chocolate time warp? I looked up Chunky to see if they are still made. Ordering a one point four ounce bar costs two dollars. I don't know what they cost in the last millennium since I didn't particularly like them. I doubt children would have asked their parents for two dollars for a candy. I purchased two John Kelly chocolate coconut candies at a local specialty shop. The small Chunky sized rectangles cost $5.60 each. For that amount I don't expect something completely extraordinary...er... well, yes I do. Two bites and gone, a nice chocolate but not memorable. No discernible coconut. I guess the golden wrapper was attractive. Quality aside, not worth the price of three Chunkys. read more

John Kelly Chocolates (JKC) used to make their chocolates in house in West Hollywood and were among the best I had ever eaten. Ever since JKC sold the company in 2025 to Charles Chocolates in San Francisco, the taste quality has greatly diminished. For example, the bourbon chocolates and the raspberry chocolates used to have intense flavors - now they are just bland with a hint of bourbon or raspberry. I was surprised how large the pieces were when I opened the package. I cut one in half. The taste is typical of most American chocolates, more sweet than chocolaty. Just kind of average. I've been getting John Kelly chocolate for over 15 years and am sadly saying some of the chocolate has shrunk to the point of affecting the taste. I recently purchased The walnut caramel clusters(?) , peanut butter truffles, the truffle fudge bars and the coconut truffles. The size has shrunk quite a bit , but the peanut butter fudge is a quarter of the size of the coconut. The bars have shrunk also. The taste is still very , very good , except for the walnut caramel clusters (?). The owners have sold to charles chocolates and I assume the they have cut back, which is sad to see. I will purchase the bars again, but will think twice before the other pieces which seem to be drowning in the beautiful packaging. I wouldn't mind paying a bit but more for this high quality chocolate, which is more than my frugal ass is accustomed too. But for the best tasting chocolate I have been used to tasting, I wouldn't mind. Good luck Charles and please don't destroy the legacy that John Kelly fans are used to read more

Several years ago, some poor kind soul gave my parents a box of John Kelly Chocolates, which they immediately relinquished to me and Matt B. We'd received a handful of their reject chocolates and other gifts before, but had no idea what we were getting when they handed us that box. Let's put it this way: if life were like a box of John Kelly Chocolates, every day would be the best damned day of your life. Matt and I aren't even that into chocolate. Before we joined the John Kelly hive, we never kept chocolate in the house. Now we get boxes for Valentine's Day, anniversaries, and whatever other occasions we feel like, and since we eat them at a pace of about one piece every two or three days, we have a box going about a third of the year. The chocolates are just so good. We get the double-tier signature box, which comes with two each of their twelve bestselling chocolates: dark chocolate espresso, semi-sweet chocolate with walnuts, semi-sweet chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate and peanut butter, dark chocolate with walnuts, dark chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate with raspberry, white chocolate vanilla with walnuts, semi-sweet chocolate and caramel with Hawaiian Alaea sea salt, dark chocolate with French grey sea salt, peanut butter with Himalayan pink salt, and walnut caramel clusters with Mediterranean sea salt. My favorites are the raspberry and the espresso, but they're all winners. Each one ends up costing more than $4, but they're decadently delicious and big enough to share, like three or four good bites a piece. We often split one when we sit and relax after the kids go down, and they make a small but satisfying end-of-day treat. We usually get our boxes delivered, but I went to the physical store for the first time to pick up chocolates for Father's Day. It was a quick, pleasant stop, even with my toddler on my hop, with easy street parking and friendly service. The shop was small and inviting, attractive and chock full of chocolate. There were even a couple of samples on the counter, nibbles of the Alaea sea salt chocolate and the dark chocolate bourbon, which I hadn't tried before. I picked up our usual box and a small box of the Alaea sea salt chocolates as a gift for my friend, who I was visiting for lunch. Because of course John Kelly Chocolates make great gifts. I don't get them for my parents, but they're a nice option for most other people. I've taken boxes to friends in Japan, and I always look forward to giving and receiving them within my own home. Wanted to surprise my wife with something for pandemic Valentine's Day and was searching around for mom & pop chocolate shops in Orange County and Los Angeles County. After spending a few days reading reviews I narrowed it down to two places. Thanks to John Kelly's free shipping these guys won. I got a 12 piece variety box, a box of salted caramel, and a two piece of their butterfly chocolates. My wife loved them so much I barely got any pieces to try myself. She loved them and the few I tried I was blown away. Their salted caramels are mind blowing. Half the box was sprinkled with Alderwood smoked salt and the other half had French gray salt. Just enough to please the taste buds without overkilling the salt. The texture of the caramel was perfect. They were dense without sticking to your teeth making for a great experience. Delicious! The chocolate butterflies also had caramel inside but it was more of a liquid like texture vs the other caramels. These also tasted great. The 12 pack of chocolates are insane. I've never seen a piece of chocolate so big. Huge pieces. The inside has a fudge like consistency and you can only eat one or two at a time. My wife always shares yet not with these. They were very empathetic and completely changed my experience with the business. The employee involved was educated (she was always kind to me) and I was reimbursed. Wow, these chocolates are unreal. Truly. Over Christmas a good friend from LA gave me a box of 4 dark chocolate truffles with French grey sea salt. When you open the box, each truffle is big - one truffle is really the size of two (not complaining). As soon as I took a bite I was hooked. Texturally amazing, depth of chocolate flavor, the right amount of salt. I wasn't surprised when I looked up the shop on Yelp and saw a solid 5 stars! I loved them so much, I went on their website and ordered more. I'm excited to try some of the caramels and the Thai coconut curry truffle. If you spend $75 on their website you get free shipping... What does all this crap mean? That I know 'good' chocolate! I suffer from an incurable illness plus experienced a trauma head injury (geeze, 2020!); so what was the ideal remedy? Chocolate! Now, here is the deal: I have never heard of John Kelly Chocolates before (even though the company started right here in Hollywood) nor of John and Kelly (that's right: they are TWO people!). But I have friends who raved madly about John Kelly being accolades above Gorant, Ghiradelli, See's, and Godiva. John Kelly is a true confectionery featuring truffle chocolates, bars, chocolate-dipped fruits, nuts and unique flavor like spicy peppers, Thai Curry and bourbon, to name a few. Due to Covid restrictions and my being autoimmune; I did not venture into this location (although they are open for pickup) and instead opted for an online order specifically from this storefront to be delivered via FedEx overnight. What prescription did the doctor order? The 8-piece Holiday Truffle Fudge Assortment ($31) with Dark Chocolate Truffle Fudge w/French Grey Seal Salt (4) and Semi-Sweet Chocolate and Caramel Truffle Fudge w/Hawaiian Alaea Sea Salt (4). Little details mean a lot to me and it says much of the company. Well, John Kelly passes with flying colors! First of all, the delivery arrived first thing in the morning and was packaged carefully with bubble wrap and brown packing paper but not just thrown in there: wrapped beautifully! The little message gift card with the note from my friend who paid for this order on his credit card was written in an award-winning handwritten font! Someone at this shop is an artist with letters! Further, the packaging of the chocolates themselves are delightful with golden snowflakes AND the chocolates are gluten free, kosher, handmade, and all-natural! WOWZAS! Let's get to the nitty-gritty, shall we? How are the chocolates? OH MY FREAKING GOD! These are some of the best chocolates, ever!!!! Diets and healthy eating be damned cause I could have eaten 200 of these! First of all, the chocolates are simple rectangle pieces with the salts sprinkled on top and yet define elegance and couture with smooth textures and a perfect shade. The pieces are sized-well so trust me: they don't skimp. Now, who knew various salts can make for defining tastes but they sure do! The Semi-Sweet Chocolate and Caramel with Hawaiian Alaea Sea Salt is pure heaven and EVERYONE must try it! Soft truffle chocolate, smooth caramel and a perfect salty note (I'd say similar to pink Himalayan salt). My mouth is watering just thinking about it. The Dark Chocolate w/French Grey Sea Salt was equally melt-in-your-mouth and not overly bitter with a smoky salt finish. The two flavors work well with each other and seriously: you NEED to try these! My only complaint? That I finished them too fast! Best Chocolate in the US Whatever I assume my credentials to be, I have found, through an incredible amount of research, both nationally and internationally, that John Kelly has THE BEST chocolates here in the US. They are SO good, that if you don't give them to their intended right away, you will eat them. It's a fact. Unfortunately, many family members have received Amazon gift cards because they did not pick up their Chocolates from my control in time. (within 2 or 3 days. And they have that long only because I always buy myself some, too) What you might NOT expect, is how wonderful the staff is. One person in particular helped my friend out of a major jam. Frantz, in the Hollywood location was such a gem, coupled with some of the John Kelly chocolate magic, that we were able to not only save her job, she was given a promotion. Of your many (many!) chocolatier options in LA, John Kelly is the most economical, when taking into consideration the price ($3.40-$3.95 each) and massive size of their chocolates. These are not your dainty hand painted artisanal confections. They are thick blocks of silky smooth fudge coated in chocolate - some akin to the size of a small candy bar! They also offer hand dipped candied fruits, chocolate covered nuts, and chocolate bars, but we are here for the truffles, obvs. Three varieties of self-serve samples reside on the top on the case, and consistency of the filling seemed to be the same for everything, just with differing flavors added. They have plenty of elegantly pre-packaged boxes of goodies adorned by fat, richly colored satin ribbons, or you can make your own custom box. I just wanted treats for myself, so I opted for mint, espresso, and grey sea salt packed in a simple kraft box. Espresso was my favorite, as it magically tasted like cake (though with negligible coffee flavor)! It wasn't just me thinking this, my husband echoed the idea as soon as he tried the truffle. The only explanation I can find for this, is that the cake I bake most often is a rich, dark chocolatey version with a bit of espresso powder. But regardless, this truffle was divine. The mint was also delicious, offering a refreshing foil to the rich chocolate. It was slightly salty, and while uncommon with mint sweets, this was a truly lovely additional note of flavor. Compared to maneuvering the city streets of Beverly Hills where many of LA's chocolate stores reside, this less trafficked spot is a dream, and we easily found street parking in the neighborhood north of John Kelly. The additional joy of admiring the charming homes lining our walk to the shop was a happy accompaniment to an already grand experience. I like chocolates, but I can't honestly say I'm a chocolate connoisseur ... I am able to happily satisfy my unsophisticated choco-cravings with the usual mass-produced fodder that gets dispensed from snack machines and sold at supermarket check-out lanes. If you look up "lowest common denominator" in the dictionary, a picture of my hapless, low-maintenance mug is likely to be next to the entry. Having said that, a colleague of mine *is* apparently a chocolate connoisseur, and after hearing her incessantly rant and rave about how much she enjoys the chocolates produced and sold by this shop, I figured why not put a smile on her face by surprising her with a box of their chocolates for her birthday? (Particularly as she has always been a very kind and generous person to me, and is one of the few people at work whose company and conversation I actually find enjoyable). Quick rant: God, the nightmarish drive to the shop reminded me of my love-hate relationship with Hollywood ... I love the frequently splendid establishments anchored within this enclave of Los Angeles, but I thoroughly *despise* the invariably horrible traffic and parking conditions. And on the latter note, good f***ing luck trying to find available parking spots around this otherwise delightful little chocolate shop ... Prices of the chocolates sold here are relatively high, but (as I later discovered after the first few bites) the build quality of the chocolate is also palpably high, as is the effort put into presentation of both the products *and* the shop. Everything here literally screams *boutique* ... I almost felt like I had walked into a high-end jewelry store. I could even see the staff making the chocolate thorough a glass door - I felt so privileged seeing artisans at work. Also extremely high is the professional level of service provided here by the staff. The lady at the counter was extremely nice and helpful with all my questions (I am feeling *very* guilty right now for not remembering her name, as she was such a sweetheart. All I remember is that her heartwarming smile that did not betray a single hint of insincerity). For example, I had no idea that the boxes with the prettier blue ribbons contained the same goddamned chocolates as the boxes with the less ostentatious brown ribbons - until said lady enlightened me. I ended up getting two boxes - one for my colleague, and another for myself (might as well treat the person I love most too, right?). Being the cunningly practical and financially-obsessed Chinaman that I am, I quickly did the math and concluded that due to economies of scale/volume discounts, it would be foolish to purchase a gift box of any quantity less than 8 or 12 (seriously, if you're shopping here at all, you *might as well* get the bigger boxes - you get a better bargain for yourself, and you don't run the risk of looking like a cheap bastard when you hand the box over to the recipient of your gift). The chocolate was very good, I'm not going to lie. Unfortunately, since the law of diminishing returns really hits a high-end shop like this *hard*, I am sorry to say that I *did not* like the chocolate enough to be willing to brave automobile hell for return trips here ... for myself, that is. I can probably see myself coming back here again to buy chocolate for other people on my Cool List, because quite frankly ... everyone else seems to love the chocolate here *way* more than I do. You can also order chocolates online and have them delivered to your door step. My first time trying John Kelly's Chocolate was over a year. I checked into an AirBnB and the host was kind enough to leave a box. First bite and I was hooked! My boyfriend who is not a huge chocolate person like myself fell in love with John Kelley's chocolate the first time he tried them as well. We promised to stop in whenever we're in Hollywood. On our last visit we tried the Earl Grey Chocolate with Sea Salt, the Dark Chocolate with Hawaiian sea salt and the Walnut dark chocolate cluster. I LOVE nuts in my chocolate normally, but here at John Kelly's I'll stick with chocolate on chocolate. I don't want anything interrupting that flavor besides salt. We let my partner's 9 years old try a piece and the same thing happened to him. On his first bite he closed his eyes and rubbed his stomach saying, "This chocolate is the best I ever had. It makes me feel good ... like taking a nap lol". My sentiments exactly little fella! The staff are all so kind. We were heading to Venice Beach after leaving John Kelly's.
