This review is for Dr. Hindman. Having had a previously positive experience with this office several years ago, I found myself reaching out again when in need of an emergency appointment recently. This would turn out to be a mistake. The Pros: I was able to get an appointment for the next day, and could've taken a same day appointment had my schedule permitted it. End of list. The Cons: I was told I needed a tooth extraction (& implant) that common sense and a second opinion have now revealed I did not need. All questions about the possibility of saving the tooth were immediately dismissed after about a minute of looking and two x-rays while in the chair. I had to ask, twice, to be given the antibiotics that I actually did need, as he was too busy compiling brochures for me of all his buddies that he wanted to refer me to for said extraction. Multiple times a panoramic dental x-ray was pushed on me, something I was told I had to have - and was told would cost me much more at any other practice - which felt like more of an attempt to get everything they could out of my insurance company than something that would help me in the moment, especially as I had to repeatedly say no. This is not even getting into what it's like for someone with anxiety about dentists, which the office had been warned about, to have to hear "I have more bad news for you but we won't get into that today". A week later, in the chair of another dentist at another practice, after another round of (non-panoramic) x-rays, said dentist looked at me and asked "that tooth?!" and then announced what I actually needed was a root canal. It's to their credit that I'm now going to be saved from an incredibly pricey procedure that likely would've caused more problems down the line. If you go here, get a second opinion after. You're probably going to need one. Better yet, just don't go here at all. read more

This post is for Dr Hindman at Dental Care of Alexandria Group, as we have never actually seen Dr Schehl. My boys, 13 & 15 love his energetic personality! They can be complaining and dreading whatever procedure we are on the way to the office for, and as soon as he greets them, they are put at ease. I also see him and have been very pleased. The entire office is very kind and works hard to accommodate you into their office. It can be very hard to find a dental office that provides great service, is clean and aesthetically pleasing, AND makes recommendations for treatment unaccompanied by the guilt trip other offices may throw at you. My exam and cleaning were adequate. Staff was friendly and no issues with waiting. However, This dental office could use a complete overhaul. The dental equipment was outdated and the small exam room had cardboard boxes of supplies sitting in the corner and was generally untidy. But my biggest gripe was the condition of the back hallway?? The ancient panorex machine was shoved in to a corner and took 3 attempts by 2 people to function. And this area was gross. There were 2 dirty bottles on the floor with some type of tubing draining from something on the counter. And autoclave machine (that is used to sterilize instruments)had paper towels on top of it with instruments. Were they clean or dirty? I am not a germaphobe but this was enough for me to look for a new dentistry practice. read more

The Alexandria office: I first went there to get a cleaning after trying to find a dentist that I was comfortable with because in the past I've had terrible experiences. I completely love the way that they take care of me I even took my parents for an appointment there!! Julia is so nice she's amazing! Dr. Pacios is super nice and she's very knowledgeable she explains everything! Liz is friendly and very helpful. Everyone that has worked on me is terrific!! I'm happy I found an office that actually cares about their patients. Will be referring more patients. read more

The woman receptionist was rude. She made it difficult to obtain an appt and tried to charge a co payment even though I was not required to pay one. I received weekly appt reminder text messages, then daily appt reminders the week of. One text the day before had a link which required me to complete the covid data form. 830 am morning of appt I received text requesting I call or text when I arrive in parking lot. I arrived at 1030 am, texted the office and the office texted me stating my appt is cancelled. The woman in office was rude during my previous visit and I believe the office did not want me there. Dr. Schehl and his whole team, be it the McLean or the Alexandria office, are top-notch! I'm always able to get an appointment when needed. And recently when an emergency appointment was needed, I got it. Jessica is an excellent office manager and keeps those offices running so well. She is so friendly, always with a bright smile. Dr. Schehl is WONDERFUL at calming frayed nerves. And while I strayed to other dentists after I moved, I came back because Dr. Schehl and his team don't try to oversell the latest fad in teeth whitening, straightening, etc. They listen, they offer sound advice, and thank you for the reminder to floss daily. I highly recommend Dr. Schehl and his team. read more

I've had several years of outstanding care from Dr. Schehl's office and his team. Highly recommended. I don't think I've ever had to wait for my appointment, which was the first surprise. My appointments always began on time, and the service was always excellent. read more

I have experienced a problem with billing at Dr Schehl's office. My insurance carrier says that the amount I was required to pay for my visit was $35 more than the insurer authorized. I have waited 7 weeks for a refund but the accounts people are still telling me that they are waiting for more information. All payments were made by my insurers 7 weeks ago. read more

I just spoke with the office regarding our bill. I had some questions and was met with an absolute attitude! I asked the woman, 'why are you talking to me like this???" She was silent. I asked again??? Ummm, I am just telling you.... Dr. Schell, please double check that your front desk be respectful to your clients!! read more

Dr. Schehl has been my husband's and his parents' dentist for many years. I started going to him after our marriage which is in its third year so for those who are counting, I've been to Dr. Schehl five times so far. He has two offices, one in Alexandria and one in Tysons Corner. I go to the Alexandria location. He has an exceptional team in place and it makes the normally unpleasant idea of visiting the dentist, at least tolerable. Jessica mans the front desk and I'm always impressed with her cheery greetings and her fantastic memory. She knows who I am, whom I'm related to and just sundry tiny little tid bits about me that always remind me how likeable she is. I never have to wait more than a few minutes and she always calls if there is an issue or a scheduled appointment needs to be re-booked. Audrey is the dental hygienist, and what I like about her is how easily she can put a nervous patient (me!) at ease. She always explains what she is going to do and is very aware of my signals should I feel any rare discomfort as she sets about to clean my teeth. She is very gentle and patient. Last, but obviously not least, Dr Schehl is the main attraction. He is a whirlwind of activity but once he sits with you, he has terrific bedside manner. He explains everything, listens carefully to whatever one needs to tell him and most important to me, never makes me feel as though he is rushing from one patient to the next. I always feel that my well being is important to him and he demonstrates it with a gentle hand as he sets about to examine my mouth. I've had one cavity filled by him and again, it was as good as can be expected when one goes to a dentist. read more
