Just moved to the area and checked this place out last night with my husband for a drink and dessert (we ended up having 2 drinks- oops!) Loved the vibe in here- relaxing music and atmosphere. Also very charming. We both had their version of an old fashioned and it was delicious. Also got the bread pudding which was also very yummy. Good Food! This is the place for good food and good people. Nice place to go, well before COVID. They adapted to take out very well and we go there for take out all the time. Easy to order and pickup. Now they have their own app so you can order thru it and pickup. They also deliver if you need that during these odd times. read more

First time, why did I wait so long? discovering this lovely place. Great decor from the period the building was built. Super clean place both in the bar and restaurant area and as well as upstairs. Ambiance is great, and staff genuinely friendly. I had the beef stew which was perfect and the mash potatoes and green beans and carrots were done to perfection as well. Lovely wine as well. Food is good. But , you may want to reconsider. The owner/host is not very friendly and rude to customers. I have been here before and did not have to wait it for a table or seat at the bar. I had no problem. The host saw me coming in and then asked me if i had a reservation. Reservations? I normally take a table or a seat at bar now i need a reservation? Just had fabulous appetizers and drinks at John Sparr with incredible service by Ramon (90% I'm getting his name correct, apologize if not!). Highly recommend the Bitter French if you're a fan of French 75's, such a fun twist. Deviled eggs and guacamole were great and everyone else in the party enjoyed their cocktails, wine, and beers. A nice "Cluby" spot in Montrose. The 50's building was completely remodeled last year and all looks crisp and new. The bathrooms ( take the elevator) are sparkling! The menu has very nice selections for lunch and dinner. We started with the Caesar and warm spinach salad- both very good. My wife had the roast duck and I had a skirt steak with crab stuffed sand dab. She chose the creamed corn which deserved a medal. My serving came with perfect french fries (2 other side choices). Our dinners were well prepared and had quality taste. We shared a large crem brûlée - yummy! As a additional plus, the bar prepared a good margarita. The service was friendly and prompt. Prices were reasonable. And, the owner dropped by our booth for a nice friendly visit. They had accepted our reservation and saved the booth. We'll be back!! read more

We came here afterwork for happy hour because of all the high reviews and the photos which gave the impression that this would be an awesome spot. However this place is crazy overpriced and with 4+ servers and no customers, it's super uncomfortable in there - no ambience at all. The place was deadly silent. You could hear a pin drop. And because there was no one really there and the several servers lingering, it felt like our conversation was the main event. Happy Hour drinks were well made but prices were still really high for being sold as a discount hour. The Happy Hour food menu is a joke. $4 for basic fries?? The menu stated they came with a blue cheese sauce. Our fries were served cold, bland and with ketchup. The main everyday menu is $20+ for entrees and the food is definitely not worth it. It all tastes under seasoned and frozen / from cans. Crab cakes are clearly made from canned crab meat. Not sure why everyone on here gushes about them. They were dry and made of shredded grainy crab - definitely not fresh. Fish and Chips entree was $21 and was soggy. Like they had fried them a half an hour before and let them sit and let the crunch breading become soft and soaked from oil. The general age of customers seemed to be 60+ and when we asked the server if there was a day or time where we might see a younger crowd, his response was "definitely not". The server over charged us for drinks - billed a higher price than the listed prices on the menu. And no apologies when we caught it and requested a revision. In fact the bartender seemed annoyed and rolled his eyes at the request. Definitely skip this place if you are looking for a fun happy hour spot and vibe. Instead, head up the street to Casa Cordoba where you can get much much much better food, ambience and vibes for half the price. read more

Came here on a Saturday night with my in-laws. Parking was a bit hard to find at first. As for the establishment itself, the exterior is very eye catching. Looks like it belongs in Boston. Very cool. The inside had a hip, Art Deco vibe. Loved the deep green, stone walls. The place was packed when we went, but had reservations so no wait time. Had the deviled eggs to start. It was good, but not the greatest. Loved the bed of salad the eggs were on, especially the dressing (which had quite a bite). We ordered the creamed spinach, creamed corn, and scalloped potatoes to go with our entrees. The spinach was BOMB. I want the recipe for that. So tasty. My pesto halibut was a tad bit dry. My husband got the rib eye. He said it was okay. My in-laws greatly enjoyed the peppered steak and ribs. The steak looked good just by looking at it. Perfectly medium with the pepper crust. Our waiter was nice, and the owner himself was making the rounds talking to guests and cleaning tables as people left. They did forget the complimentary dinner rolls, but we were all full by the time we realized it. read more

I've had my eye on this place for a while now. I've always been curious about the stained glass and unique vibe emanating from the building. In desperate need of a good burger I finally decided to give this place a shot. Inside is a renovated history. The small tavern is alive with shiny old surfaces and textures, it screams 1920's but with all the assurance of a modern dining experience. I sat at the bar and ordered a burger. The. I decided to look at their website, and I'm glad I did, because I read a marvelous story that soon got me chatting with one of the owners of the restaurant. The burger was delicious and just what I needed. This place is that neighborhood, casual, yet refined place that you can feel comfortable and easygoing in. It's easy to strike up a conversation with another person at the bar, or have an intimate high class meal with someone special. read more

In 2020, ate here the Sunday before the lockdown for my partner's birthday. First night out in a year, went again, 3/14, for his birthday. John Sparr was our choice after 365 days of eating at home. For that, JS gets 5 stars. Dinner was lovely. We sat in the covered, outdoor area in the back. Martinis, shrimp scampi, Napa salad with grilled chicken and . . . fries. Seriously. Hadn't eaten fries in a whole year. No use eating delivered fries -- a cold, unappetizing mess -- and don't like to eat in the car. So . . . fries . . . served in a restaurant. So good I could weep. Decadent, perfect creme brulee for dessert. Will NOT wait another year to enjoy our favorite neighborhood spot. As for "neighborhood," we met friends eating there, too, celebrating a birthday, too! JS is their favorite neighborhood spot, because they also love excellent food served in an cozy, warm and inviting atmosphere. This place is about as good as it gets. No seriously, it's really that good. John Sparr Tavern is a labor of love, and the owners go all out to make everything top shelf. The Rueben sandwich is better than Langer's, the drinks mixed better than Proper, the fish better than Taylor's, the ribs better than Zeke's, the soups are homemade perfection, and some of their own creations (e.g., cauliflower steak) just amazing. Some would say the place is 'small' while others would say 'intimate,' but however defined, it definitely lends itself to a friendly environment and clientele. John Sparr has a covered and fully enclosed patio that during covid-times makes for a real dining experience. It isn't high on the 'hipster' factor, but then again a real public house is meant for all, and everyone fits in hear. This is on my very short list of 'go to' places that never disappoints. read more

Recently, I was introduced to a new place for Happy Hour, Dinner, Dessert, and an all around good time. John Sparr Tavern in Montrose, deserves a 10 rating in all areas (10 being the best). You'll find wonderful service, delicious food, perfect cocktails, and a fabulous atmosphere, where you can actually talk and hear each other. I know that some folks like to know about rest room cleanliness....very clean!!! The easy parking is a bonus! My next visit will include a yummy dinner and dessert. Last week, I had the "Tavern Made Bread Pudding w/ Bourbon Hard Sauce". It was by far, the best bread pudding I have ever had. Oh, one more thing: the prices are very reasonable. read more

My husband and I have been eating at the John Sparr since they opened 2 years ago! They have the most amazing cocktails! We have tried nearly everything on the menu and The food is always excellent. We did not love the cauliflower porterhouse. The soups are spectacular! They serve a Rueben sandwich only at lunch, that is phenomenal!!! Our favorite entree is the prime rib of pork! Owners, Dave and Rick, oversee every detail and make sure everyone is well taken care of. The restaurant is small and the street parking is not always great. I have never written a review before because I was afraid I would not be able to get a table!! While yelping restaurants in the area, other mediocre restaurants were coming up first! This restaurant/bar is across the street from my office, so yes, it's convenient... however, I have always had consistently excellent food, cocktails and service here. The owners and servers are top notch and their food rocks my world. We've patronized this establishment thru thick & thin during Covid. The pressure must be extreme for existence , splitting a dinner was mentioned and frowned upon by one of the owners. Don't get to friendly because it's all about the Money. This establishment is on the verge of losing several customers. I don't think they care and truthfully my vote is thru my patronage which now is in question. Half is better than none. Keep that in mind when you give out your Snarky Comments. I am writing this review, several weeks - maybe even a month after my visit - but I wanted to give a shout out for the Onion Rings, the beer selection and the atmosphere at John Sparr.
