Holy Moley! This place is so freaking great. I'm a proper wine snob and they have a small Greek wine list but it's lovely. The food is fresh and served hot. I'm a temperature brat so this place delighted as soon as the plate arrived steaming hot I had a white bean soup called fasolada and it was lovely with steaming hot pita and a refreshing white wine wine called Santorini. The pita is scrumptious. If you like bread, order some extra cause you'll want more. The salad is fresh and lovely and well dressed. I'm not white so I like it Dressed Properly with great olive oil and it was. The lamb shank was divine. Rice was moist and perfectly cooked. Green beans were addicting. I had an Agiorgitico red wine which was a perfect pairing with the shank. The portions are big so come hungry I highly recommend you check out this mom and pop restaurant. Had lunch in the restaurant on Thousand Oaks, San Antonio, Texas.. One of the worst experiences ever trying a new restaurant Got the lunch special with one Gyro, a small Greek salad and french fries for some reason I didn't know that french fries were part of the Greek cuisine. I would think it would be rice. That being said, the salad arrived swimming, and what seems to be Greek dressing drenched severely The Gyro the only thing good about that was the bread that was holding it to me was tasteless and look like it sat out all day. John the Greek has sooo much potential to be the standout option on the Greek food scene with some simple adjustments. The best thing about John The Greek is the variety! There are items on the menu that you won't find anywhere else in the city. We even had saganaki that was flambéed tableside, like they do at many Greek restaurants across the country- but not here because there's no other proper Greek restaurant that provides tableside service anyway. The excitement of having saganaki took a nosedive when we realized it was wrapped in phyllo. This "twist" doesn't do anything for the dish, but probably allows them to use a lesser quality cheese by protecting it with phyllo so it doesn't disintegrate. I ordered the beef souvlaki, labeled as a fillet mignon cut. I should have known better. Filet sounds good and brings a higher price point, and it's great as a "steak" but not ideal for souvlaki. It was chewy, impossible to wrap in some pita and bite through- you had to take in the whole chunk! It's famously easy to cut with a knife but the structure of a filet makes it resistant to tearing, which is essentially what teeth do. If they want a higher price point, they should use ribeye. If they want a flavorful, traditional, more authentic beef souvlaki, they should use sirloin. That's not something I would order again. Presentation could use a lot of work. My plate came out looking like it had come from a cafeteria line. It's a sit-down restaurant so I expected it to look like what other sit-down restaurants do (even the Greek ones elsewhere). Ambiance could also use improvement. At the front of the dining area there's a bunch of "stuff" that they store - high chairs, tubs of cutlery, etc. There's got to be a better place to keep them, not front and center. Overall, the food was OK, not great. I do know my way around Greek food and restaurants, having come from an area and background with a high Greek population, a Greektown, and gyros shops as popular as taquerias are here. When the owner overheard me pronounce galaktoboureko correctly, he snapped his head so fast I thought he might hurt himself! I'm not saying the food here is bad by any means, and I would definitely go back, but it makes me sad that there's so much potential for greatness with just some small improvements. Also, the menu on the website is completely off. It doesn't list at least half of the options and it doesn't list the various combos that are available. read more

My son and I came with my parents for lunch and it was so much fun to take in all of the murals and decorations. The staff was warm and welcoming, providing wonderful service. Their lunch special menu is fantastic, I had the lamb gyro, side salad, their lemon/chicken/rice soup and a drink. It was delicious! My son enjoyed his kids chicken kebab and fries. My parents loved their meals and topped it off with baklava with we all shared and loved. It wasn't too sweet so it hit the spot. I wish I took more pics but I was enjoying my food so much I forgot. The combo appetizer is the best dish to order for sharing and getting to try authentic and delicious Greek flavors. This past Monday, hubby had dinner with friends so it was Daddy-daughter dinner for us. I took Dad to @johnthegreeksa for dinner. It's been a while since we last visited. Dad and I both had Lemonade. I ordered the Sampler Plate for us, which had the hummus, Tirkokafteri, Skordalia, and Tzatziki with two pitas. Most of this was soft for Dad. He had forgotten he had tried these before. I also ordered the Traditional Gyro with the avgolemono soup, which was chicken, rice, celery, carrots, eggs, and lemon sauce. Dad enjoyed the soup and we shared the gyro. We had a meeting here tonight for a church men's group of about 10 people. I have never been here before even though I've lived in the area for many years. I had always heard good things about this place and those reports were true. Very good food and excellent service. The restaurant is very casual and comfortable as is the food which is delicious! My only regret is not trying the Greek coffee and any of their desserts, which looked fabulous! I will make sure that those are on the list for the next time I come. read more

The pita bread is flavorless, the portion sizes are ridiculously small and the prices are outrageous! Anyone wanting Greek food please go ANYWHERE ELSE! Excellent lunch here! The service was SPOT ON too! Our questions were answered, and out server was quick to refill drinks and/or clear plates. We started with the flaming cheese app. Perfect size. I forgot the greek name, but we enjoyed it's mild flavor with pita. I ordered the chicken gyro and Greek salad. Both delicious! My husband had the traditional gyro with soup & salad. All excellent, he said. We were full from the generous lunch portions, so did not eat dessert. From what I saw it all looked delicious. We have also ordered for pick up on numerous occasions and aren't disappointed with portion and quality. We love the Gyro combos (#12C) for both lunch and dinner, you can order with fries, soup, and/or salad. We also love to add an order of Baklava to share. The food is so incredibly tasty! We haven't seen anything come to the table that we wouldn't happily order again. I'm still on the lookout for a Greek salad that has a tart vinegar potato salad at the heart, but I sure don't hold it against anyone. This one is fine, and they sell their delicious Greek dressing by the bottle. The decor is reminiscent of those Italian restaurants that have murals of Italian pastoral scenes and columns inside the building. This one is just the Greek version! The ambience is matched to the food and it's quite enjoyable. Windows have darkening film to block out bright sunlight, so it's not as bright inside and you may want supplemental lighting if you have vision challenges. Service has been slow the lunches I've been there; the latest time, we had to chase down the check. Probably not the place for a quick turn work lunch but if you have the time, come enjoy the food at John the Greek! read more

This is a nice local joint to visit when you'd like a nice, decent meal. Cute outdoor patio, with excellent service. The food was good if you want something solid, but I found it to be a bit excessive on the salt. I was also looking for more Greek flavors if that makes sense. The pork chop was seasoned and grilled but didn't have Mediterranean flavors. The rice pilaf seemed a bit more "American cafeteria", but again edible. Based off of other reviews I was hoping for more. Maybe I just didn't order the right dish??? Either way, it does seem like a very solid place, I'm willing to go again but order something else. Walking into John the Greek, you feel transported to another country. With a mural that brings you seaside and contemporary Greek music playing over the speakers, it's hard not to feel closer to Greece. Our server greeted us with a big smile and told us to sit anywhere we'd like. It was a rainy night so it wasn't too busy, but there were a few people enjoying soup and other dishes. I think our server was the owner's son, since what seemed like a regular guest asked him about how his father, John, was doing. John's a common name but I think it is safe to assume it's a family run business. We ordered a cup of avgolemono soup, which is a lemony chicken rice soup. It was delicious. I could understand why the other guests had chosen it. We also had the saganaki, a cheese flamed in brandy tableside. It had a little phyllo dough around it, too. It was tasty. Hard to hate on a baked cheese that has brandy! For dinner, I ordered the broiled octopus. As is the tendency with octopus, it got a little chewy after a few minutes, but it still tasted alright, better than most places that serve octopus. Overall, if I was in the mood for octopus, John the Greek would be an option. I got the green beans side. I wasn't expecting them to be cooked in a tomato based sauce. It was, again, alright. I liked it, but it wasn't what I was expecting, so if you want green beans, just be prepared. I also had the rice pilaf, and that was very good. The salad needs its own section in this review! The dressing is SO GOOD! Be aware, the olives have pits but I really REALLY liked it. The lettuce was fresh too. As far as side salads go, it is up there for me. I would come back for a soup and a salad, 100%. My husband ordered the dinner special that includes a gyro, French fries, and a drink. The price was really good for the combo. My husband said his gyro was average. It's not like he didn't like it, it just didn't blow him out of the water. Lastly, we had some baklava and that was loved by both of us. It's shareable between two people but not by much so get one for each person. Trust me, you'll want your own. Overall, the meal was enjoyable! We wanted something a little different for lunch on Valentine's Day so we decided to try a place that we have often heard of but had never been to. What a great decision that was! This little hole-in-the-wall Greek spot was *excellent* from the decor (we especially loved the blend of Saltillo tile with blue accent tiles) to the music to the fooood oh man the food. Now listen, let's be realistic, everything was good but not everything was "omg" good. The potatoes were fine, the spinach was ok, but the gyro! That was the real star of the show. We started with a plate of olives and feta - awesome. We cleared that out. Their pita bread is unlike any I've ever had (and I have had a ton of pita bread) - it is addictive and delicious. Slightly crisp outside but fluffy inside with a touch of buttery goodness - come here for the pita pieces. The gyro (both lamb/beef and chicken) are excellent. Full stop. The baklava - wow. You need to try the baklava. A bit of cinnamon surprises you but in a really great way. We both agreed that we can't wait to come back here. read more

Yes...yes...yes...I highly recommend this restaurant that's been around for over 30 years. Its food has been consistently good and the service has always been friendly. I tend to order the gyros, the Greek salad and the souvlaki- these tend to be my go to. I really ought to venture beyond these items. On top of this, I treat myself to their baklava which is phenomenal. The interior itself is your basic looking Greek restaurant with painted walls but it is clean. This pretty much sums it up.
