Greek salad (in a cafeteria style bowl)
    Sam O.

John the Greek has sooo much potential to be the standout option on the Greek food scene with some simple adjustments. The best thing about John The Greek is the variety! There are items on the menu that you won't find anywhere else in the city. We even had saganaki that was flambéed tableside, like they do at many Greek restaurants across the country- but not here because there's no other proper Greek restaurant that provides tableside service anyway. The excitement of having saganaki took a nosedive when we realized it was wrapped in phyllo. This "twist" doesn't do anything for the dish, but probably allows them to use a lesser quality cheese by protecting it with phyllo so it doesn't disintegrate. I ordered the beef souvlaki, labeled as a fillet mignon cut. I should have known better. Filet sounds good and brings a higher price point, and it's great as a "steak" but not ideal for souvlaki. It was chewy, impossible to wrap in some pita and bite through- you had to take in the whole chunk! It's famously easy to cut with a knife but the structure of a filet makes it resistant to tearing, which is essentially what teeth do. If they want a higher price point, they should use ribeye. If they want a flavorful, traditional, more authentic beef souvlaki, they should use sirloin. That's not something I would order again. Presentation could use a lot of work. My plate came out looking like it had come from a cafeteria line. It's a sit-down restaurant so I expected it to look like what other sit-down restaurants do (even the Greek ones elsewhere). Ambiance could also use improvement. At the front of the dining area there's a bunch of "stuff" that they store - high chairs, tubs of cutlery, etc. There's got to be a better place to keep them, not front and center. Overall, the food was OK, not great. I do know my way around Greek food and restaurants, having come from an area and background with a high Greek population, a Greektown, and gyros shops as popular as taquerias are here. When the owner overheard me pronounce galaktoboureko correctly, he snapped his head so fast I thought he might hurt himself! I'm not saying the food here is bad by any means, and I would definitely go back, but it makes me sad that there's so much potential for greatness with just some small improvements. Also, the menu on the website is completely off. It doesn't list at least half of the options and it doesn't list the various combos that are available.

I love the atmosphere of this little restaurant. The food was tasty and the serving staff very hospitable. Not a lot of vegetarian options however.

This restaurant has fast and friendly service. When I walked in, I felt like I was in Greece. The place is so beautifully decorated. I ordered the 10A. It was a gyro with fries and a drink. The gyro was mad fresh and fast. I absolutely love their tzatziki sauce. I consider this place a 10 out of 10!

Solid Greek spot. Humble, authentic, delicious. 10 out of 10 would return again. Service was very friendly, the hero was predictably delicious.

One of our favorites. The service is always great and they are always welcoming. Quiet and quaint restaurant. The food is always good. I usually get the chicken gyro plate but I changed it up and I'm glad I did. I found another great meal. We will definitely come again.

My son and I came with my parents for lunch and it was so much fun to take in all of the murals and decorations. The staff was warm and welcoming, providing wonderful service. Their lunch special menu is fantastic, I had the lamb gyro, side salad, their lemon/chicken/rice soup and a drink. It was delicious! My son enjoyed his kids chicken kebab and fries. My parents loved their meals and topped it off with baklava with we all shared and loved. It wasn't too sweet so it hit the spot. I wish I took more pics but I was enjoying my food so much I forgot. We will definitely be back to our local Greek spot!

The combo appetizer is the best dish to order for sharing and getting to try authentic and delicious Greek flavors. We always have a great time here with very upbeat and friendly servers and manager who goes around checking on everyone. The patio is so nice we always choose to sit outside and it's even heated over the winter.

This past Monday, hubby had dinner with friends so it was Daddy-daughter dinner for us. I took Dad to @johnthegreeksa for dinner. It's been a while since we last visited. Dad and I both had Lemonade. I ordered the Sampler Plate for us, which had the hummus, Tirkokafteri, Skordalia, and Tzatziki with two pitas. Most of this was soft for Dad. He had forgotten he had tried these before. I also ordered the Traditional Gyro with the avgolemono soup, which was chicken, rice, celery, carrots, eggs, and lemon sauce. Dad enjoyed the soup and we shared the gyro. We were already full so no desserts for us. Maybe next time!

We had a meeting here tonight for a church men's group of about 10 people. I have never been here before even though I've lived in the area for many years. I had always heard good things about this place and those reports were true. Very good food and excellent service. The restaurant is very casual and comfortable as is the food which is delicious! My only regret is not trying the Greek coffee and any of their desserts, which looked fabulous! I will make sure that those are on the list for the next time I come.

My friends and I decided to try John the Greek while in San Antonio as it was a place we hadn't been before. The staff was very friendly and did a great job and the restaurant itself was nice and casual as well. While dining at John the Greek, I tried the following: - Lamb Meatballs w/ Tzatiki: Delicious! - Lunch Special (Traditional gyro, greek salad, french fries and drink): The salad was good and fresh, the french fries were OK and the meat was a bit dry but all together it was a good lunch - Cookies/ Desserts: The desserts at the front counter looked good but ended up being pretty dry. I wouldn't order these again.

Excellent lunch here! The service was SPOT ON too! Our questions were answered, and out server was quick to refill drinks and/or clear plates. We started with the flaming cheese app. Perfect size. I forgot the greek name, but we enjoyed it's mild flavor with pita. I ordered the chicken gyro and Greek salad. Both delicious! My husband had the traditional gyro with soup & salad. All excellent, he said. We were full from the generous lunch portions, so did not eat dessert. From what I saw it all looked delicious. Baklava & other items The inside of the restaurant was decorated with pictures of Greece, and artwork. Very casual, but nice! Prices were very reasonable. We'll definitely be back! Thanks for a great Greek experience!

I loved my Aphrodite Spritz :D ! My friend ordered the Athena Dion and the Santorini Bikini :) ! For our Happy Hour dishes, we ordered the Tirshi (butternut squash, harissa, and pepita chili crisp), the Dakos (marinated Texas heirloom tomatos, sourdough croutons, black olive salt, tulum and fresh Za' atar) and the Olive Oil Cake :) ! If it wasn't so hot and humid, it would have been nice sitting outside. I would have preferred to sit inside during the summer. Except when we went, it was already early Friday evening, and most of the indoor seating at the bars and tables were taken. I would highly recommend this Mediterranean restaurant to anyone :D ! Their Happy Hour prices are extremely reasonable :) ! Although, I wouldn't mind coming back for their regular non-Happy Hour dining too :D !

The pide bread has a nice crust and gave the satisfying crunch when you bite into it. I can eat just the bread alone. But as you bite the portion with the cheese and meat, wow!! It's awesome! All the grilled meats were very tasty. Usually chicken is the least tasty in Mediterranean grill but over here they really know what they were doing. Happy with our selections. Complimentary bread and dip is a plus. The dip is really good. Too bad the server couldn't tell the name of this dip, he just said it's house made. They can certainly create a name to avoid confusion. Service can be improved, thus 4 stars. 1. The store is open until 9pm but kitchen is closed at 8:15om. I see a few people got turned away because the sign said they were open but they can't take their order? What are people supposed to do if they come at 8:15 and get in? Have a drink? They have no alcohol license yet as of July 2026. I don't know if they have food that's microwaveable that can be served after 8:15. 2. They don't provide water unless you ask, they only have water bottle for $1 each. They could have said this when they take your order: "Anything to drink?" But they don't ask if you want anything to drink at all. I saw other tables also don't have a drink.

Our waitress was warm and extremely helpful. It was surprising. Let me explain why. I don't know if it's a cultural thing. I may be wrong, but a lot of middle eastern/Indian/Mediterranean restaurants we visit, the staff at times can seem cold and non engaging. You will see in a review for a place we recently visited how bad it was, later. I made a point to get the wonderful young ladies name, but I will not butcher it, but sound it out. Sa-va-ti. She was amazing. We started off our meal with some of the best hummus we've had in quite awhile. It was perfectly flavored and had great texture. We also started off with falafel, which we all love, but it was missing just a tad more spices. It was fried to an absolutely wonderful crisp. The pickled veggies that came along were a surprising table hit. They were very good. Then mains, we had the Kahramana Burger, and the Kahramana Mix Kabob plate. Let's start with the burger. It was different. Don't get me wrong, it was good different. It just took a minute to get over the beef patty having the consistency of meat loaf. Once we got over it, it was dam tasty. Good bun to meat ratio and a sauce like I've never had. This place also managed to cook great fries. Two places in a row for us! Makes me wonder what the other places in town are doing wrong? To the star of the star of the show. The mix kabob plate was AMAZING! Best lamb I've ever had anywhere. It was not too gamey, seasoned just right, and they got the medium cook on it spot on! I wish I had ordered just lamb. The beef skewer was also great, but the lamb stole the whole plate. The chicken was our least fav. It was a tad under seasoned and had a somewhat grainy texture. It was falling apart. The rice was good too! It came with a small hummus and this delicious garlic sauce! We were dipping the fries in it! Get this they still bring you all the bread you want! It's hard to explain the bread. It's like a pita/naan hybrid, and we couldn't get enough of it! We stopped our meal early, loaded up our to go boxes, so we could try the baklava. It's wasn't bad, we've had better. Check this out...they bring you complimentary Iraqi tea at the end of your meal? Or maybe it was just for us? Who knows? It's was perfect with the baklava! I can't even explain how excited we are to revisit and try other items! Bravo!
