Yes, please! My boyfriend and I came here twice in two weeks! The slaw dog is the way to go. To our surprise we weren't too much of fan after the first bite, but after the next couple it was almost refreshing. We ordered a ton of other dogs along with fresh meatballs! I always make fun of the chain chili dog spots in Vegas and So Cal, and I've been promising the real thing for years now. Well, let me just say that I looked really stupid bringing her here. Got some dogs and fries all the way and some chili cheese fries. I can't say it's bad.. But I'm almost impressed at the lack of flavor. Like, if it was possible for chili to taste like nothing; then that's the chili they were serving. She didn't even want to finish her food. My go-to joint for Texas dogs (chili dogs). Get them "all the way" with an order of tater rounds with sauce. Exquisite! Follow with breath mints. They do have other food - burgers and such, but you go there for the dogs. Not as - er - quaint as the old dump in Paterson (Dan thinks it's too clean), but it's a good successor. read more

The family have been going here for 50+ years. the prices kept going up and up, but we continued to make the 130mile round trip drive just for johnny and hanges "all the way" dogs after we left the area. just got some dogs today june 7th 2014 and was devastated to find out that they changed the classic sauce! This is a terrible loss for being around for so many decades, and is a terrible loss of identity for the area. Back in the day it was a real treat when dad would bring home dinner wrapped in white paper because we knew that he had made the pit stop in Paterson to bring us home some Johnny and Hanges. This place was great back then and it's still pretty decent now, I don't really know how to put my finger on what has changed, it's just not the same. The chili sauce is still good, but I feel like it's been modified since changing hands and its' move to Fair Lawn...is that cinnamon or nutmeg I taste? The dogs are still fried instead of grilled which I believe is the absolute best part of this North Jersey Staple. The milkshakes are fantastic, and strangely enough for being a hot dog joint the burgers and even their tuna are pretty damn tasty. Story in short, if you find yourself on Rt. 208 or the Bergen County area, do yourself a favor and hop off at Maple Ave; get an order of gravy fries and a few dogs all-the-way...you won't regret it...until the inevitable heartburn kicks in. read more

There is no better place to get a hotdog in Bergen county! Ok, maybe Falls View or Rutt's Hut but Johnny & Hanges takes it for me personally. The food is always perfectly cooked and has the sweet crisp snap in every dog and fry. The burgers are really good here too and not inflated with extra meat, a nice thin but tender patty. I have never had a problem with the food or service here. Everyone is very nice and the food is classic American styled cuisine. Not the same since it changed ownership and location! We used to order from Johnny and Hanges weekly and bring it home. Now we go to the Goffle Grill for MUCH better, freshly cooked food. Better prices too on certain days at the G G, I think it's Sundays. No more hard roll ordering for burgers, stale soft rolls that are more than a day old. Burgers are pre cooked, overdone and dry. The sauce is not what it used to be. Workers do not know what "all the way" means. Prior staff could recall any order without writing it down, shouting it out to the cooks. They were amazing when in Paterson, no longer. So disappointed since new ownership and the move. The move is closer to us but the food is horrible in comparison to what it used to be. Between their cheese dogs all-the-way, disco fries, and cannolis I love everything on their menu. Some people just go for the cannolis. on Mondays they do a buy 2 get 1 free special. I almost always go on a Monday. This place is an old school Jersey hot dog joint. Bring your family and empty stomachs and go home full. I've had almost everything on the menu and have yet to be disappointed. There will always be opinions that differ. This area in general has many hot dog grills and many people are loyal to specific ones. This is one of my favorites. I always come back. Why does everything that tastes so good have to be so bad for you?? lol Johnny & Hanges is hot dog heaven to me. I love a fried dog! I love that sensation of biting through that crispy skin and then tasting that juicy dog. I always get the Italian dog: fried hot dog/potatoes/onions/peppers. Didn't notice this in any other reviews, but J & H also has great cannolis! They fill them to order so they are not in a display case anywhere. And they are surprisingly good. I had an All the Way dog with cheese, a slaw dog, fries, and a chocolate shake. First of all, these are fried dogs and they are nowhere near as good as Rutt's Hut. The chili on my dog looked more like baby crap than anything. Chili is not hard to make without looking like something that came out of a public school cafeteria. The slaw on my slaw dog was flavorless. Cole slaw is not hard to do either. I lived in Atlanta for a long time (but grew up in PA & NJ) and was really excited to eat a slaw dog, but it came nowhere close to how awesome they are at The Varisty. The fries were ok, but the ketchup tasted weird. Seriously, how do you mess up ketchup?! The milkshake came out of a machine and I wouldn't have ordered it if I had realized beforehand. This place is disappointing. My parents use to take me to the previous location in Paterson, the food was way better then, but now not so much. I usually do my by-yearly visit, and see if things got any better. The food is always bland in flavor, hot dogs are just ok, fries are boring unless you drown them in chili or gravy, which are also bland to me. He had no mask on and was talking the entire time he was cooking, spewing his spittle on everyone's food. A second cook, tall and stoic, was also not wearing his mask.
