This visit happened at 11:15 AM on a Sunday morning, there were about 4 people inside but really not busy at all. INSIDE/SEATING (5/5): one big plus is that there is plenty of seating options and the space itself is very large. There's also a parklet outside with additional tables and benches. STRAWBERRY GLAZED RAISED DONUT (2/5): it was clear that this donut had been sitting out for hours. The dough was so dense and chewy, by the time I finished it I felt like I did a jaw work out. For $3.75, the quality at this point felt no different than a $1.50 donut given that it was sitting out for so long. I'm sure if it was fresher and warm, this would be a really solid donut. If I had come after 1 PM closer to when they close, I would understand the chewiness and would not expect a fresh donut, but given this was the weekend and still prime donut and coffee hour, this was extremely disappointing. But once you've had a "fancy" Tesla of donuts here at Johnny's, it's going to be hard to go back to cheap donuts. I've tried: 1. Maple glaze: My personal favorite. The glaze is soooo delicious and rich. The maple is high quality and tastes like I'm biting into high quality maple Canadian Maple syrup. Half a donut fills me up which normally I'll eat 3-4 Krispy kreme donuts like nothing so I definitely feel less guilty with these. 2. Apple Fritters: Also delicious. You can taste the fresh apples in it. It's not too sweet and they keep then natural apple flavor without overpowering it with sugar. 3. A little ways from downtown, this place will definitely fulfill your donut craving. While they are on the pricier side, they are quite large. The glazed donut is fluffy and just the right amount of density, with a sugar coating that goes well with coffee or tea. There's a wide variety of donuts, including their famous CroDough. With their online ordering, you can only order a specialty box and you can't indicate the specific flavors you want. I went into the store early, determined to get their apple fritter, one of their most popular items. I ended up buying some apple fritters, a bismarc, and a cronut. Let me start with the apple fritter: it was just.. wow. It had a nice glaze on the outside with an inside that was super fluffy and had chunks of apples. Also if you warm up/microwave the apple fritter, the yumminess will increase ten fold. I can see why they sell out really fast. The other donuts were pretty good too. The cronut had many flaky layers like a croissant and a luscious cream filling. The bismarc was a yeast raised, fluffy donut with a smooth vanilla cream filling. If I had to rank them, the best would be the apple fritter, then cronut, then bismarc. And they have a lot of flavors for you to experience. So come often. Not sure as to what was here before, but it is a very clean, black and white place where you can see everything in the open. The doughnut maker is there taking freshly mixed yeasty dough out of the mixer and artfully spreading it out on a flowered wood table. He rolls it and then, with great expertise, rapidly used a cutter to cut out the doughnuts, while popping out the "hole" that goes back into the scrap dough for another round. Yes, I enjoyed it along with the two grandchildren. You order and sit. They call out your number. You pick it up. You eat some of the greatest doughnuts ever. And they were made, easily, within the last hour. Fresh, soft, doughy and yeasty...depending on what you ordered. Coffee is excellent. Not weak, but rich. Pairs well with the doughnuts. The texture was very satisfying (pretty thick, perhaps somewhere between a bear claw and a donut, but not in a gross overly-heavy way) and they had the perfect amount of sweetness and complex flavors. 12 doughnuts and $47 dollars later, I would recommend this hip doughnut place I've been meaning to try for years. In a sense, it's the perfect doughnut. A very large doughnut, perfect for sharing with two. Enough dough and not too sweet. I've got to make it my goal to show up at 7am for a super fresh one instead of 12pm. I really wanted to like the donuts because the concept of cronuts and sweet potato donuts were fascinating but it just wasn't there for me. I figured sweet potato donuts would be more dense which it was but I thought the donuts would at least be bursting with flavor and it was not. I was really excited to try the cronut too because I loved the chocolate cronut I tried in San Francisco that was so flaky and had chocolate in between the layers. This one was so disappointing. Along with that artisanal style, comes the price, typically over three bucks per doughnut, but it helps sway you away from eating a dozen to yourself hopefully at that price point hopefully. As for parking it is located down townish San Rafael, but a little ways down on the main strip making find a street parking spot much easier. So, what about the doughnuts?! Well I sampled two even though I had to endure an hour + long car ride smelling the heavenly scent that filled my car! I tried the Wheat Free Fritter Thang and Salted Caramel. The Wheat Free Fritter Thang, definitely resembled a doughnut, but felt more like a cake after devouring it. Filled with fresh blueberries, it had somewhat of a sponge like inside with a perfect browning on the outside from the fryer. For a semi fake doughnut, it may of been my favorite hands down. As for the salted caramel, tasted the caramel, but it lacked in the sea salt department which was a bummer, but good nonetheless. I am glad I do not live near Johnny's Doughnuts as I may visit this establishment daily if I did, but thankfully I am blessed with something similar on the way to work. Came here on a Saturday morning o our way to the Russian River. It's located on that main cute strip area in San Rafael - there's cute local yoga studio across the street - and these two places are creating some fun buzz at 9am. The shop itself feels really big, with massive high ceilings. Modern feel and look, clean and airy. Like all other donut shops, you have all their offerings in sight - and what a sight they are! Gorgeous cakes! HUGE! We got the raspberry frosted and the cinnamon sugar cronut. The raspberry donut was a downer unfortunately - and we should have clued in to the kids sitting around the tables, with half eaten donuts in front of them. Frosting is WAY too sweet, dough is...doughy but not in the way you would want from an airy donut. It was chewy - so, with the addition of ridiculously sweet frosting, it was hard to finish. The cronut on the other hand was amazing! Nice crispy texture on the outside, and a soft, flakey, layered inside, complete with some kind of creme to compliment. What we did try, was the lime poppyseed, blackberry glaze, strawberry glaze and chocolate glazed crodough.
