I LOVE this place!! It's half way between where I live in Austin and where my family lives in East Texas, so it has been our go to stop for many years. The service is great, prices are definitely reasonable, restaurant is clean and comfy and the food is delicious!! Their sweet tea is wonderful and I am a picky southern woman when it comes to my tea. My family all got something different. Chicken fried steak, salad, chicken and catfish. Fantastic roadside cafe offering all the stick to your ribs staples. Interior is exactly what you'd assume for its name, covered in confederate memorabilia and historic tin type photos. Nothing over the top or offensive if you're a left leaning traveler though. They are simply paying tribute to a past era of the south and Texas. Service was very nice and quick with the iced tea refills and the food came out without much delay. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and it was above average if not on the top ten of chicken fried steaks I've had. Gravy was perfect. Breading was crispy but not over fried and you could tell that the CFS was made to order not heat lamped. Mashed potatoes were a side of note. Lots of milk and butter. All in all, nothing fancy about the place but that's why you're here. Very good southern traditional comfort food all the decor to boot. read more

Wow! When my husband pulled over and said we were eating here, I was not expecting much. I was very pleasantly surprised at how wrong I was! The food is excellent, especially of you are in the mood for comfort food. I ordered the chopped steak with grilled onions and brown gravy. Fabulous, and I ate every bite! It was the brown heavy that lured me in, and I was delighted to have enough of that gravy for my mashed potatoes and corn as well. My husband loved the grilled cheese with french fries. I wish I could tell you if my son liked the chicken tenders with fries, but he devoured them before I even got a chance to ask. Which I think speaks for itself... The wait staff was very cordial, and the restaurant is clean and attractive. We live in Dallas, and Hearne is a good stopping point for when we drive our daughter to College Station. Surprisingly good small town diner fare. Plain and simple. Their menu is a bit more expansive than the average small town Texas café with a few more seafood and steak options than usual. The burger was great for lunch. It was reasonable and the service kept our drinks refilled. I especially appreciated the offer to bring out rolls and cornbread which were remarkably good. The prices are more than fair -- for little more, if any, money -- you're getting better food and service than you would from a chain fast food option. The waitresses were nice & attentive, the restaurant itself seemed very clean and the prices are reasonable. That's the only reason this place gets 3 stars. Wouldn't come back for the food. I had a stuffed baked potato with grilled chicken -- I didn't know it was possible to create rubber bullets out of chicken but here we are. It was the strangest texture. The flavor wasn't bad but the texture was unforgivable. As for the baked potato itself, I felt like there was an overwhelming discrepancy in the chicken-to-potato ratio, namely the fact that there was so little potato to match the chicken. What am I supposed to do with all of that chicken?? I could eat it, sure, but that brings us back to the rubber bullet issue. The cornbread was so dry it crumbled if you blew on it too hard & the rolls were neither sweet or soft. Pick a struggle, y'all. I visited Dixie Cafe in Hearne in a group of 8 at 11AM when the store was not busy. About one in five tables were occupied at the site. Only four of our party were present at first and the management would not seat 4 of 8 in an empty restaurant while we waited for the other four. So for the next 30 minutes, we had to do a people shuffle whenever customers entered or left the establishment. Other than that, service was OK. I am not much of a stickler when it comes to service in a restaurant and will not take this into account for my review. When the party of eight was seated and had ordered, we were brought rolls and cornbread. The rolls were ok but the cornbread was nearly inedible. I would give the appetizers a 2/5. My order was chicken fried steak, okra, and corn. Salt and pepper were liberally required to attempt to liven the fare. The corn was straight from the can and warmed, the okra was ok, the chicken fried steak was just ok, and the gravy was not a commitment to being much of anything other than something off-white which stuck to the breading of the meat. I give the food a 2/5. Portion sizes were hearty across the board. A result of the portion sizes and food quality was that not a single person in my group ate the entire serving. There were half eaten burgers, sides, and salads across the table. On top of mediocre service and bland food you get to view monuments to the Confederacy and its racist underpinnings decorating the walls of the establishment. I appreciate rural living, conservative values, and southern culture. However, this is at best a distortion of the Confederate history and at worst... The overall rating drops to a 1/5 based on the decor of the restaurant. read more

What a great find! The restaurant has excellent food. I had the chicken fried steak, corn, and mashed potatoes. The chicken fried steak was a melt in your mouth tenderness with excellent flavor. The gravy was creamy and added to the flavor. The corn and mashed potatoes we delicious as well. My wife had the meatloaf and it was excellent as well. A very generous portion. The banana pudding is a must have. Again the large portion is indeed a generously large portion. It is definitely made from scratch and reminded me of the banana pudding my Mom used to make. This was recommended by somebody and we love diners/cafes so we stopped for lunch. As for me, I see meatballs on the menu and I automatically ask if they are homemade. In this case they said yes. So, that was it for me, my daughter in law had meatloaf, my husband, I believe grilled fish. I tried the meatballs first; dry as a bone, devoid of flavor, sauce tasted like from out of a can and later when I told the waitress that same thing, she said kids sauce is different than an adult. Now, I know I am a Senior, but wouldn't it be commonsense that I would want the sauce from the adult menu? My daughter in law ate a few bites of her meatloaf. It was OK she said, left me know it was dry as a bone. She took hers to go and never opened it again. Another correct for me. My husband ate his fish. The cook tonight cooked a mean rib eye steak - plenty of flavor, tender, and medium like I like it. Asked for for Heinz 57 but I didnt need it. The sides were on point with just the right amount of seasoning. Also ordered the chicken fried steak with mash taters and black-eyed peas. Oh, Dixie Cafe. This is the opposite of most reviews, and I'll say I'd love to give them more than five stars. Dixie has quickly become our go to stop anytime we're in the area. We drive through Hearne multiple times per month, and Dixie gets our money every time. Service is fantastic, the waitresses are always friendly and smiling, I don't think we've ever waited more than ten minutes for our food to be delivered, and the best part? The food is actually very good! I'm partial to the chicken tenders, but the burgers are wonderful too. If you come here, and I suggest you do, be sure to bring a large appetite. If you are looking for authentic, Texas Chicken Fried Steak then this is the place to be. I was there on Tuesday night, which happens to be the Chicken Fried Steak (or Chicken) special. For a mere $6.99 you get a large, perfectly battered and fried, chicken fried steak (or chicken), and 2 sides. The sides choices are what you'd expect from a greasy spoon type dive... Canned green beans, mashed "taters", fries, fried okra, cooked carrots, etc. For just $1 more you can add a salad with your choice of dressings (but don't get crazy!). The meal starts off with a basket of fresh baked bread. They have yeast rolls and sweet cornbread muffins served with whipped butter. HEAVEN! But, its important to not make a glutton of yourself! I ordered a salad with ranch dressing. It wasn't bad... Lettuce a couple of carrots and a slice of tomato. Over the years, their salad has improved and contains more than just iceberg lettuce. Again... This is not the reason to come here! The ONLY thing I have ever ordered here is their Chicken Fried Steak. Again, as always, it was perfect... What I grade all other Chicken Fried Steaks against. It wasn't too greasy and didn't have too much extra "batter" hanging on to the edges. It was tender enough to cut with just my fork. The gravy is white, peppered gravy... What my Daddy calls "40 weight gravy" and wasn't too thick or too watery. As my sides, I chose the fried okra and the green beans. The okra was a little greasy and the green beans were from a can... but lets face it... I don't come here for the veggies either!! Overall, I love the Dixie Cafe! It's certainly not fine dining, but if you want a big ol' Chicken Fried Steak... There isn't a better place (that I have found anyway!). A little country joint called Johnny Rebel's Dixie Cafe just incites expectations of outrageous Southern fare, boasting some of the most delicious grub in Texas. Heck, Texas is not even part of the deep South, so how much more delicious could something be, having been birthed in Texas and labeled "Dixie Cafe"? I am driven by establishments that Texas Monthly has determined as high-quality. In the "Top 40 Small Town Cafes" list, I have found some delicious little Texas institutions. Unfortunately, JRDC was disappointing, regardless of all of the high acclaims and Southern culture that the eatery possesses. When I go to little eateries such as this, I go for the sides and simple items that make or break a lunch rendezvous such as Johnny's. It provides the perfect amount of simplicity (chicken fingers) and/or good ol' grub (lemon pie), all rounded out with a very affordable price tag. I went with a veggie plate, just to sort of play the field to see if I would bring friends over to Hearne for a bite to eat. Black-eyed peas: eh. Spinach: eh. Watered down hardcore. Squash: hard and excessively sweet. Adding sugar to something already sort of one-noted? Not my favorite. Mashed potatoes: super creamy, but far too watered down. Almost soupy. Phenomenal gravy, though! Cornbread: OK.... slightly tough. Red beans and rice: Not hardcore Cajun. Thus, it was boring, certainly not as complex as what you could imagine with good ol' Nawlins' RB&R. All in all, Johnny's was a good dining experience, but I passed about 3 or 4 BBQ joints in Hearne. I think I would check those out before returning to this little spot. If you want something with fantastic service, a variety of country fare, and a straightforward, no-frills atmosphere, then this little cafe is perfect for you. read more

We like to stop here on our trips to and from Houston and Fort Worth. We know we always can get a good meal, served promptly. Our favorites are the hamburgers, blackened tilapia, and the coconut pie. There aren't too many place's left in the world that can call themselves Johnny Reb's with a confederate flag on the sign out front. Hearne, Texas is just such a place. That's not a rip, just an observation. This is good comfort food, served fast and friendly. I had the large chicken fried steak (which means there's two of them) with rice/ gravy and fried okra. They're a little sparing with the sides but the chicken fried steak was as good as you could get anywhere. It was relatively inexpensive and the service was wow fast and and very pleasant. I had the vegetable fettuccine alfredo (nice, vegetarian-friendly choice!) with the salad & honey mustard dressing, but was unable to eat all of it, since the portions are so big. The staff are friendly. The ambience was nice, though it was somewhat noisy. The bathrooms are 1-seaters, so you may end up waiting just to wash your hands--you might as well go while you're there. I liked the old black & white photos framed on the walls. They were mostly pics of either old houses, courthouses, &/or schools in the area--nice touch of local history! Nice guy but he had no knowledge on the menu and didn't offer to get help from the other staff to assist with our questions.
