Last night, after dinner and 2 helpings of ice cream I checked out Johnny's Donuts menu/pictures and my stomach started to growl. My fiance thought my stomach was upset but I was really just drooling over the pictures and made up my mind to grab donuts once I got up this morning. The plan was to grab 4 but I order one more because my fiance wanted the original glazed and that's no fun. Arrive before 10am on a Friday. The line was 8 people deep by the time I left the store, but it can move quickly. Verdict: The donuts are solid here. They are fresh, huge, reasonably priced, cash only, light and airy to the bite, and not overly sweet which is something I highly value. Donut flavors I ordered: - Raspberry filled: I'm obsessed with jelly donuts so this is what drew me to the store in the first place. - Powder lemon filled: I didn't mean to order 2 jelly filled donuts but the unique combination of jelly, powder, lemon and donuts was to hard pass up. I loved the balance or the sweet and sour filling. - Chocolate raised (best seller): I'm not 100% sure it's called the raised chocolate but the gentleman behind the counter suggested it was the most popular item sold and I can see why. I can't pin the other flavor in this and it might be sour cream, but wouldn't that make this an old fashioned? - Apple fritter - this was massive! It's like 2 donuts in 1 if you love apple fritters and wanna get your bang for the buck you must get this. - Original glazed: my fiance inhaled this before I had a second look at it. read more

For a treat, one of my coworkers bought doughnuts to work. She lives in the East Bay, so she brought an assortment from Johnny's Donuts in Lafayette. We all dug in first thing in the morning on Wednesday, April 25th around 9am. She brought a big box and a small bag of various donuts: glazed, old fashioned, frosted cake, donut holes, etc. I tried one of the crumb cake donuts. It was a good springy cake. The crumb also had a slight sweetness which I appreciated. I don't like it when donuts are too sweet. The crumble also added a great texture contrast. It was kind of like a slice of coffee cake without the coffee flavor. Nice way to start the day. I'd say donuts are always a great breakfast food! read more

What a fantastic neighborhood doughnut shop! Not to criticize artisanal donuts, but sometimes you just want a plain donut instead of a matcha raspberry lemonade donut wrapped in gold flakes by some hipster dressed as a lumberjack who can't even wield an axe... and it doesn't cost $5! All of the classics can be found at Johnny's Donuts. They're excellent, reasonably priced, and, most importantly, the shop's proprietors are very nice. The cherry on top (or donut) is that they have vegan donuts on Fridays and Saturdays! They're wonderful and only $1.50; I'm not aware of any other vegan donuts available for that price in the Bay Area. read more

Came here about 11 am on a weekday, served by a friendly Vietnamese man in a typical small donut shop looking store, but only a few donuts left so they must be popular. Prices are expensive being mostly 2 dollars plus per donut...and really the taste was just average. Fine if you're in the area but not a destination. read more

We have lived in Lafayette for many years and Johnny's has always been our go-to doughnut shop. Owned by the same extended family 3 times now. This current family is great! There is a broader variety of doughnuts became there are more people working there preparing them. This place is the model of a family owned local business. The doughnuts are very light and flavorful because they are sitting longer in the proof box. The maple glaze is spot on. Would love to see the addition of bacon someday. And the crullers! The air pockets combined with that egginess is a happy dance in my mouth. It's great to see the variety available as well. With the SIP, they are as busy so they have longer hours. I've seen them open up to 5pm. Please support the locals a couple of doughnuts at a time at a reasonable price. These are the best donuts. They're light and fluffy and unlike other donut shops, the chocolate frosting doesn't get all runny and messy. It has a much better flavor too. They have a great variety, and all of them are delicious. read more

Parking can be hard to find and in a little strip mall type place. Easily visible and very nice smell inside and has some drinks to choose from. My best advice- go on a weekday. Go early or late. I would not go on a weekend unless you're fine with a line. KK used to be my number 1. I tolerated DD. Two words: apple fritters!! Our family friends bought us a box and oh boy were we in for a treat! They are HUGE with a perfect decadent crunchy glazed exterior and warm cinnamon sugar soft interior flecked with bites of real apple chunks! Tastes so good warm toasted in the oven in the morning and served with cold milk or coffee! Gotta get here early to get all the different varieties or so we're told! Different (vanilla-flavored) glaze, but nevertheless satisfying. The glazed rings at Johnny's look a bit different than those at Lee's (multiple locations, including Oakland and Richmond) in that the glaze seems a bit more yellow. And different it is, as the glaze seems to be vanilla flavored; each bite evokes the flavor a custard cream donut instead of the simple taste of sugar. Richer than with the white sugar glaze elsewhere, but also a bit heavier. No complaints about the softness and texture of the donuts; they remained soft on the second day, but did not last long enough to investigate how they remained on the third. read more

I love a great donut and just won't eat mediocre ones. When I moved here it took a while (and many places) to find a great donut. Someone told me Johnny's was the place to go. They were correct. I have had every donut they make and everyone is superb. My favorite is the maple bar. The only issue is they do run out quickly. I now call early and have a box made and set aside. Parking is also tight, but something eventually opens up near by. I just read a bunch of the bad reviews to see what was up. Most are upset that the donuts sell too fast, and they don't make enough, and they run out. Some people just don't like the donuts. These are interesting points. If you are used to Dunkin, Winchell's, Safeway, or other donuts made in great quantity - these are different. My grandma made donuts and these taste like hers. Krispy Kreme donuts are also good quality but are too sweet for my taste. read more
