Ok. I've been back many times since my first review. The service is always great here. Even at busy times, I never have to wait for a table, the orders are right, and come out reasonably fast. Now the food. Always on point. I'm pretty simple, and they do simple well every time. The killer is the racetrack soup. It's an amazing beef base soup, that's not overly fancy. This was our second time visiting Johnny's. I didn't take pictures of the first time because we were at the sour beef and dumplings night that another Yelper was unhappy with and the friend we were with got the last order of that dish, so I do understand her unhappiness because my friend quite enjoyed the dish. Funny thing is the night they offered that, I had made it for my husband and he had the leftovers for his lunch, so he opted for a salad that night. In the restaurants defense, as someone that makes the dish, it takes some space to marinate the meat for a few days and maybe that's the problem....but honestly I tasted the gravy on her dish and it was great, so I understand her disappointment and maybe Jimmy's needs to reevaluate having that or finding a way to accommodate other diners. So we went for breakfast on a Sunday morning. We are always looking for places to eat on the weekends, and there are just not enough breakfast places in the area. We walked in at around 8 and they still weren't real busy. We got a nice booth and were served coffee and our server got our order pretty quick. Johnny's is diner like, so everything is on your table ready to go....and what I really liked is that I didn't have to ask anyone to get a Tabasco sauce for me. It was already on the table! Both my husband and I ordered sausage and swiss omelettes. They both came out cooked done and hot with just the right about of cheese. I know a lot of places we go seem to be skimping on that, but we want to taste it in our bite and we did! Our server refilled our coffee and was very pleasant. Well yah, we had dinner this evening. Kid got a jumbo hotdog, and it was the best of the 3 dinners. Wife got fried chicken, it was over cooked, dry and yet greasy (very), and still without flavor. Hush puppies were bland, green beans were ok. I got meatloaf with mashed potatoes and a salad, with ranch dressing. The salad was the best part of my dinner, as the meat loaf very ... bland as the only flavor was red sauce (not ketchup). The gravy did not help. read more

My friends from Pasadena invited me for dinner, they have eaten here several times before, but this was a first for me. We sat ourselves in the back dining area and were greeted almost immediately. The dining area was very clean and well maintained. The vibe is family restaurant with an extensive diner type menu. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful answering questions about the menu. I ordered a patty melt cooked medium with "ocean" fries. The patty melt was cooked perfectly with a couple of bacon strips. The waitress explained that the "ocean" fries were a nod to the ones you get on the boardwalk in O.C.,Md and they didn't disappoint, fried to perfection with just enough salt. Delicious food, wonderful staff, family friendly atmosphere, we had a great time and I'm looking forward to coming back again. read more

Went to Johnny's this past Thursday at 3:30 to get the special. We were told they now had a new rule that you cannot get the dinner specials until 4pm. So we said fine we will order then you can bring out the salads/soups by then it should be 4 o'clock. While we were waiting three tables arrived around 4 o'clock and they ordered the specials and they received them by 4:05. They all received their meals while we were still waiting. Our waitress went back several times to try and find out why ours had not come out. When the Manager served the third table I stopped and asked why our meals had not arrived. Her response was she brings them out in the order they were put in. So I said well that can't be true because we ordered ours at 3:30 and these three tables you just served didn't arrive until 4pm. At 4:45 we finally received our meals. Now the two specials were hot however we also had ordered a cheese steak sub. That sub was cold and the steak was dried. The fries were also cold. Because he had taken his insulin he couldn't return it because his sugar as getting very low. The manager should have done her job and gone back into the kitchen and asked why our meals were not delivered timely. Instead she did nothing. She is a piss poor manager. We are regular customers. However I'll not be returning to this Restruant any time soon. read more

Great food but super slow service. I know everywhere is pretty short right now but we were given our check and no one returned for quite sometime. There wasn't anyone even in sight so my husband took the check up to the front counter once he started getting agitated. He overheard restaurant drama being talked about while we were waiting to pay and leave. When we visited it was pretty empty. Only a handful of tables were occupied. Last time we stopped in we couldn't get a table it was so busy. If service was super slow during a dead time, I would hate to visit during their busy hours. read more

Johnny's is your standard neighborhood diner. Two very small dining areas, one with counter seating and your run of the mill diner menu. The food here is consistently good, the customer service however varies greatly on your server. I've had the waiter we had today a few times before and each time I've felt unwelcome. He has a habit of walking away from you, smack dab in the middle of your sentence, while you're trying to ask and order for things. It starts to feel like you're a bit a burden and the experience drowns in that feeling. Now, the food is a different story. Their fare has always been pretty good. Today I tried the grilled chicken Chesapeake sandwich, crab cake melt and French fries of course. They were both very delicious, and everything came out hot and quickly! The restaurant is rather dated looking but the food is home made and quite reasonably priced. Their entrees come with a soup or salad, 2 veggies and a roll. Hubby & I both had a cup of racetrack soup, steak (his was 12 oz, mine was 8 oz), creamed spinach and potatoes. No drinks except water and we did share some key lime pie for dessert. All very tasty for $45. I think this place is getting added to my regaular restaurant rotation. read more

Went here because it's close to home and I like diner food. You definitely get the feel that this is an older family-run business inside. The waitresses looked like they have been here for years or know Johnny and his family personally. The service was very quick and the portions were also pretty big, which I really appreciate. However, the place was a little dirty, not sure how often they mop or do any deep cleaning. And the food was just okay. They had some desserts in a display door that I wasn't sure they restock daily, or if it's old stuff they're trying to get rid of, but I definitely wouldn't order out of there. They had like a half a cake in there, and I doubt the other half was all ordered the day I was there. There was only one other couple there when we got there for dinner. I can't imagine they get very busy, unless they do for breakfast and everyone orders cake after breakfast. Anyway, the food wasn't awful, but it also wasn't memorable, so I most likely won't be back. As much as I like that this is a local, family-owned business, there are other diners I'd rather eat at. read more

Don't let outward appearances fool you - cozy, warm atmosphere awaits inside. The other patrons literally stopped eating when my companion and I entered and greeted us like family. Our waitress - Veronica - was very pleasant and attentive. We were very pleased with our dinner choices, and the prices were great. Highly disappointed... I had heard great things about Johnny's and since restaurants are closing for dine in due to COVID, we wanted to support small, local restaurants while we can. When we walked in, we were not exactly greeted, but instead told by the waitress to "go to the back" because she had a mess up front. We go to the back and we're greeted at all. We had to pull a waitress aside to see if it was seat yourself or if there was a wait. She pointed us to a table and we sat ourselves. After 15 minutes of waiting to be acknowledged, we up and left. They weren't very busy and I don't see a reason as to why they couldn't even say that someone would be with us soon. In addition, the restaurant wasn't very clean. With COVID, I was quite put off. It's true that the food will sell itself, but the staff creates a repeat customer. With that being said, we recently moved, so we'r don't come in as often. Instead of coming in every week, we haven't been in for a couple months and I was very excited to return this morning. The lot wasn't full, which I was expecting, so I was feeling very happy about sitting down and waking up with coffee. HOWEVER. This experience started out very wrong because we had a different server. He greeted us at the door, no judgments. We placed our drink order and he returned quickly, but took his time in cooking back for our order. In between sitting down and getting our food, he never returned. We didn't get another option for coffee until he delivered our food. I asked for the flavored creamer and he gave me a look, which I saw. Let me say that our previous server has offered it in the past, so I know it's available. He came back and dropped off about 8 creamers on the corner of the table... again, no offer for more coffee. So. I added a little bit of creamer, drank most of the coffee and placed my cup at the end of the table. *let me shift to food and say I really enjoy the grits, which again he questioned what I wanted to order when I ordered it. Grits, as usual, were wonderful. The creole omelette was great. My husband devoured his omelette. Our food dinking was exactly what we wanted.* Overall, I'm not a terrible tipper, I used to serve, so I tipped accordingly. However, if this had been our first experience, we probably wouldn't return. Walking around and offering coffee is a staple for breakfast service. Best little family restaurant with a peaceful atmosphere in the area! So many different options to choose from; on many different occasions I've tried the philly cheesesteak omelet, the farmhouse omelet, and the lumberjack omelet. All delicious choices on the breakfast menu. They are extremely generous with the portion size and they make your omelettes extra cheesy which makes it even more enjoyable. I've also had the Belgian waffle which is very tasty if you are craving something sweet! Best sweet potato fries I have ever eaten. senior Menu is nice portions and reasonable Price and service is fun and place where people learn your name. parking ok, desserts at front door case. Had been regulars at Johnny's forever (have lived in Pasadena since 1984). Last visit was on 01/17/23; our total check with tax and tip was $27.00. We decided to go to Johnny's again last night, 04/25/23; our total check with tax and tip was $58.00. WOW is putting it mildly!! The food hasn't changed, the atmosphere hasn't changed, the portion sizes haven't changed - so it's just there prices that have gone through the roof. The waitress tried to explain to us that all throughout Covid, Johnny never raised the prices. Well now Johnny is gone (passed away last year) and not sure who is running the place but for $58.00 we will be taking our business elsewhere for sure and will not be returning. I believe he is rolling over in his grave. We can certainly eat something besides a burger and a shrimp basket for that kind of money at several other local establishments. Cup of "soup of the day" was $5.49, standard size soda was $3.49 and a side of gravy for the fries was $2.59. Not to mention all of the other prices that went way up. Shame on whoever made these pricing decisions. We used to tell people that "Johnny's is a nice little cozy place with good food and reasonable prices" We will now have a different story to tell. Hadn't been to Johnny's in a long time and after going for breakfast yesterday I remember why... food is subpar. I got the triple header with pancakes and hash brown. Pancakes looked really good but had a burnt taste to them. Hash brown looked like a McDonald's hash brown just thicker and tasted like it was fried in old grease. As we sat waiting for our food I watched one of the waitresses pick up someone's English muffin with her bare hands and check to see if it had butter on it, after I just watched her wipe her hand across her nose! I saw the other waitress get ice for someone's cup with her hand. After seeing this I was a little grossed out and really didn't want to stay but my husband said let's just get our food and give it a try. Sorry I listened to him! Seating was horrible, we sat at a booth in the back against the wall and while I am not a skinny mini I am not big either but I think this booth is for kids as my husband and I couldn't even slide into the seats they are so tight against the table. So we moved to a regular table. The chair I sat in had no cushion left in it and was hard as a rock on my butt. The own of this place really need to reinvest in his place of business and clean it up. read more

I have been to Johnnys before years ago and only remember it being so so. I really wanted a turkey sandwich, had two kids in tow so decided to stop here. I'm really glad I did. Yes, the decor is outdated and hasn't changed in at least a decade but the service and food were great. The waitress was prompt and attentive even when busy, food was very good for the price. They paid special attention to the kids, had two coloring pages set down two seconds after our butts hit the seat. The kids menu included a scoop of ice cream, the strawberry was awesome and the kids loved it. Highly recommend you stop in for food if in the area, it's worth it. read more

Watched a couple get discriminated against on 9/22/19. A man and woman came in and 2 parties came in afterwards. The 2 parties after this couple were served their drinks and offered their food before this couple was served. The couple then went to the bar and were still not offered drinks or service. When the woman said something about still waiting to be helped she was told "it's not like that". I will NEVER go to Johnny's again and I will be spreading the word to everyone I know to avoid this racist establishment. In 2019 we should not be dealing with race discrimination. It was embarrassing to see and I can only imagine how that couple must have felt. read more

Omg. What happened to this place. I used to come here monthly for a good quick breakfast. No more. Now everything needs to go thru the cook - even the creamed chipped beef. So you have to wait 20 mins for a 'cook' to pure gravy over toast? Today I tried once more to get a decent meal but it was not to be and resulted in this review. I took my son for the first time. He got Chicken Chesapeake sandwich. Crab dip over grilled chicken breast - I got the meatloaf with mash and brown gravy. After literally waiting 35 minutes for our food it finally came out and passed the eye test. Good I thought. Another place I can take my son. It's slow but the food was always tasty. Well after 2 bites he looks at me and says Dad - there's hair in my food. I looked and sure enough, there was a large black hair in his crab. My son has blonde hair, as do I. The worst part was that after being shown the hair, the waitress took the food away and spoke to another waitress. She then came back very proud of herself and said 'I was able to take half off his meal b/c he ate half of it'. I quickly corrected her assumption and told her that he literally had 2 bites but that was beside the fact and demanded that the whole entre be credited. Having gotten the meatloaf with BROWN gravy, I was no longer interested in eating my meal as well but did not demand a credit for it. So I walked away after being in there 45 minutes hungry and $20 poorer. When traveling I always choose family restaurants over the chains and this family food place WAS no exception. Add that it's in my hometown, and it gives me no pleasure in writing this review. But I wanted everyone to know that this is no longer your Dads Johnny's. I will NOT be back. read more
