Hands down one of the BEST brunches I've ever had! And what a cute little place sitting on Main St! Everything we ordered was absolutely incredible. We had the Short Rib Eggs Benedict and the Smoked Salmon Benedict, and both were perfection. But of course we couldn't stop there... we had to try the Lemon Blueberry Ricotta Pancakes and OMG. Fluffy, fresh, perfectly sweet -- I will be thinking about those pancakes for a while! Add a side of mimosas and it was basically the perfect brunch. Disappointing experience with seating policy We came here for breakfast, put our names on the list, and specifically asked for a booth inside. We were told that booths were being saved for parties of three or four and that the wait for a table would be more than 20 minutes. We decided to wait, but a couple of minutes later we were offered seats at the counter, so we opted to take those instead. What was frustrating was that the very next two parties seated were both parties of two--and both were seated in booths. That simply didn't feel fair. If the policy is that booths are reserved for larger parties, then that policy should be applied consistently to everyone. If the policy doesn't actually apply to parties of two, customers should not be told otherwise. To their credit, both the manager and our server were apologetic when we brought it up, and they did provide a complimentary menu item to make up for the situation. We appreciated that gesture. However, the bigger issue is consistency and fairness. Customers should feel that they are being treated equally, regardless of who they are or when they arrive. A business can have whatever seating policies it chooses, but those policies need to be applied fairly and consistently to all customers. Hopefully, this was an isolated incident and something the management will address with the staff. read more

Had a great outdoor lunch at Johnny's Half Moon Bay. We grabbed a sunny table outside and started with some Pizzolato organic Prosecco and bright citrusy cocktails--perfect for a relaxed afternoon on Main Street. The vibe is super chill, with outdoor seating and even a friendly pug hanging around. Very pet-friendly. Cobb Salad came loaded with herb-coated chicken, crispy bacon, hard-boiled eggs, avocado, blue cheese, tomatoes, and red onion. Everything was fresh and well-portioned. The chicken was good, though it could've used just a little more flavor/seasoning. Fish sandwich (the one that feels like a burger) was solid. The bun tasted homemade--soft, slightly sweet, and really good quality. Crispy fried fish, creamy sauce, and slaw made for a satisfying bite, and the hand-cut fries were excellent. Very loud music could barely talk to my partner and hear her from across the table. Small tights quarters. Server brought water and almost dropped it on us. Staff don't seem happy to be here. Food: Old Town Scramble Presentation was nice but, despite the ingredients, the flavor was just weaker than I thought it'd be. I couldn't taste the chorizo and either they forgot the Serano salsa or it was cooked into the dish? The slices of pasilla pepper were the most impressionable flavor of the plate. I was also a bit underwhelmed by the serving size, but especially only having 6 potatoes on my plate. Despite this, the potatoes were pretty well-seasoned with herbs/spices. Service: Wait staff were friendly and ensured we were comfortable once we settled in. Couldn't ask any more of them! Ambiance: Old school diner in an even older downtown. Interior is reminiscent of any American diner in the 1960s - absolutely appreciate the character of the establishment! Stopped here before heading back home last weekend. We had our dog with us, so we asked for an outside table. Expected a long wait, but was told a table was available immediately. Restaurant had about 5 tables outside. Crab cake Benedict - 5/5: this was a perfect combination of a poached egg on top of a breaded crab cake over spinach on top of a cheddar biscuit. All covered in hollandaise sauce. The cheddar biscuit gave it a wonderful texture and flavor over a traditional English muffin. The crispy potato's were also very good as well. Definitely recommended. Brûlée French Toast - 5/5: wife orders French toast everywhere we go, but first time she saw this offered. A French toast with a crispy caramalized crème brûlée top. It was very decadent and my wife's favorite French toast she has ever had. Orange Juice - 5/5: great freshly squeezed orange juice. Overall, great spot for brunch. Highly recommended. read more

We were sat outside on an overcast day in Half Moon Bay. It was doing that thing it does in Bay Area weather where it is sprinkling outside, seemingly about to rain, but it really is just super cloudy. I was a little worried we might be a chilly, but it ended up being fine. The service was okay, nothing spectacular. But it fits with the type of place that it is. I asked for water with my coffee, and we never got it. When we got our food we asked for water again and the server was like "oh, you want refills." But we never got water in the first place. It wasn't until she brought ok the way we pitcher that she realized we had no water. Oh well. The service was otherwise totally fine. I went with the Tweety's Breakfast bowl, which was two poached eggs served over jasmine rice, with sautéed shitakke mushrooms, sautéed spinach, avocado, and roasted potatoes. It was so good. The poached eggs were perfectly cooked, as were the mushrooms. The roasted potatoes were crispy and buttery, and well seasoned. I left satisfied but feeling like I hadn't totally derailed my diet. My husband went with the croque madame, which was massive and very rich, with lots of cheese. Don't try to do a lot after eating this. He said it was very good, but he was just super full and very much needed a post-meal walk to digest. I'd give Johnnys a solid 3.5 stars. The food was very good, the environment is cool - I'd say it's definitely worth a visit. read more

We stopped by on a weekday for a late lunch. This place is happening! The decor is utterly delightful, with retro diner vibes. Despite it being a weekday, the staff is quite busy given the many customers. We stood for a few minutes by the small entrance, wondering what one had to do to get a seat; as none of the staff approached us, we ended up asking other customers who were waiting, and learned that we could just seat ourselves at the bar, or on an outdoors table. We grabbed a couple of seats at the bar, while the staff busily walked by us. We managed to get the attention of a staff member, and got ourselves a set of menus to order from. Meanwhile, two other customers who had been seated for some time at the bar still had menus in front of them, obviously trying to get the attention of waitstaff to place their order. The two of us shared a fish sandwich w/fries, and a shrimp louie salad. The fish sandwich was decent with a brioche bun, fried fish, and fries; all of it freshly made and tasty. Great food, great vibes, great service! We're a family of five and stopped by first thing Sunday morning. My fiancée and I live in town, and my parents and sister were visiting from Reno. There was a short wait, maybe 10-15 minutes, but it flew by. We took a quick walk to the visitor center and came back just in time for our table. The hostess was very friendly and welcoming! Our server, Pablo, was fantastic. He helped us with a few questions about the menu, and when my fiancée asked for his recommendation between the pancakes and the egg sandwich, he suggested the egg sandwich, so that's what she went with. When the food came out, they set a blueberry pancake in front of my sister, who had ordered the Minnie Mouse pancake. She looked a little confused, but then Pablo explained that he'd asked the kitchen to bring us an extra pancake to share, just because. Very solid modern brunchy diner in HMB! I came with a group and we ordered a variety of dishes. The standout winner was the lemon ricotta pancakes with blueberry compote. It wasn't overly sweet, was nice and zesty, and the perfect portion for sharing. My friends didn't like their eggs benedict very much though, and the chicken apple sausage was overcooked. Sadly, they also didn't have any pie. Overall, this is such a nice little diner in HMB and the food is much better than most diners. This is not your typical diner, that's for sure (and that's a good thing in my opinion). The menu wasn't as long as what you would find at a typical diner, but I did not mind since I found many dishes that sounded incredible. We did not have reservations for Sunday brunch, and we were told there would be a 15 minute wait, and it was pretty much 15 minutes exactly. There's indoor and outdoor seating available, and it is so well decorated inside. The bathroom (there's only one) even had a beautiful orange bouquet of flowers at the sink. For food, I ordered the Chilaquiles, the Herby Greens, and Johnny's Potatoes. Everything was delicious! We ended up being one of the last tables to finish (they close at 2pm on Sunday), but we didn't feel rushed at all. I would definitely recommend dining here. read more

You sign up when you get there and they will call when your time comes up. There are some limited tables outside. Inside has mostly booths. We came here for brunch after a few years of reopening, but it's nothing close to the original Jhonnys. Cute diner set up with limited brunch menu. The issue is the cost, $8 for one pancake maybe 8" wide. For party of two we paid too much for the short rib eggs Benny, B&g, side of two fried chicken thighs and one pancake with two coffees. Food quality ok compared to cost. Service was prompt and efficient, but felt rushed due to them wanting to flip tables making the experience unenjoyable. The best thing there was how well designed and clean their bathroom was. It's a one and done for us at Johnny's. read more

We visited Johnny's since we stayed the night in Half Moon Bay and read this place was good. It was okay, drink wise not much to offer. They do have TWO menu's, breakfast and Brunch. We ourselves were not aware of this .I was looking forward to Breakfast options at 1230 ish. Of course we got there at 12 but had to wait for 20-30 mins. I got THE JUNIOR which was in the brunch menu. What I really was looking forward to ordering was the biscuits and gravy or brûlée French toast. My son got a kids waffle since they didn't serve the breakfast for kids during brunch. I also wanted to order the famous mimosa they have called DOLCE FAR NIENTE . But they only sell it BY the whole bottle, wish they did it individually just a glass of frozen orange juice sphere. Maybe one day I'll go back form the whole bottle . We love taking a drive to Half Moon Bay, enjoying breakfast or brunch here, and then heading out for a walk to the beach. Blondie and I never make it down here in time, when we visit Half Moon Bay. Today, we went to Johnny's first, and were very happy we did. First, I'll note that this "diner" has class. Cloth napkins, actual candles on the tables, nice glasses, and the half and half is served in a little pitcher. Service was fast for a little place with limited seating. We were by the window, with a nice view of the street. Anyway, it's really all about the food. Best chilaquiles I've had, with just the right amount of spicy heat. Check out the picture. Blondie had a creme brulee type French toast, and didn't have to add any syrup; it was plenty sweet. Plus they had a hot chocolate with whipped cream and Oreo atop.
