Came here for a breakfast sandwich. I ordered a south of the border sandwich with a plain bagel. It has ham, egg, cheese and jalopeno cream cheese. My sandwich was ready in less than 5 minutes. I should have asked for it cut in half because it was quite messy and the egg and ham kept sliding off of my bagel. It was delicious but extremely messy especially to eat in the car. The bagel was a bit darker than I would have preferred. It looked more like whole wheat with how dark it was toasted. Still a delicious sandwich and kept me full my work day. read more

This is my second time finding hair in my basic bagel sandwich and who knows how many other times I have swallowed a piece of hair from these people who are working there. I am so disgusted! the first time I was very nice about it. I called. I let them know but this time. I'm not being so nice. I'm just taking a photo and posting it on here I'm so disgusted. Had a great experience with attentive service that let me leisurely decide on my order. I got the garden special. The sandwich came in a generous portion, though next time I'll opt for the garlic bagel over the salt bagel, as the latter was a touch too salty for my taste. The ingredients were all fresh and flavorful. My one piece of advice is come early in the day because by late noon, a lot of the bagels are sold out. Sadly the garlic bagel was sold out by the time I got there at 1:30pm. Definitely looking forward to coming back! read more

The New Yorker bagel was pretty good and gave me some flashbacks to New York bagels it looks like they have a lot of bagel choices available, but when I went around 10am, they only had like a third of their bagel choices available. BEST BAGEL PLACE EVER! My boyfriend and I love this place. We are a regular here. We had tried so many things from the New York bagel, Jalapeños Jack, onion bagel, the cream cheese with different flavors as well! Everything was so GOOD! The service was also always great! Amazing bagel shop nestled in the middle of semi Valle. The bagel was good and the lox cream cheese on top was amazing but the craziest thing about this place is I've never seen them put more cheese in the bagel ever. While heading to a training I had a craving for Lox so I did a quick yelp search and saw John's Bagel was on the route and made a stop in. Immediately you walk up and say wow this was a donut shop turned bagel space. After a quick scan of the menu I saw it the New Yorker sandwich which was the lox cream cheese sandwich I was craving. Now I will say that this was in no way a New York bagel or sandwich but it was very tasty. The bagel as other reviews stated are not traditional bagels in fact as I took that first bite I got more of a focaccia texture. Either way the flavor of the Smokey salmon, crisp tomato and smooth cream cheese satisfies the craving I had. read more

Delicious bagels. The other Yelp reviews are right! I stopped in for lunch and ordered The New Yorker. Reasonably priced lox, cream cheese, sprouts and all the trimmings. Nice soft toasted bagel. I was craving a bagel, so naturally I looked up a place on Yelp and decided to give John's a try. I ordered the new yorker on a jalapeño bagel and added capers. I agree with other reviews that the bagel was not a traditional one in that it was more of a bread texture than a bagel, but I knew what I was getting into reading reviews before coming. I really enjoyed my bagel. The fillings were really delicious and fresh. The ratio of cream cheese and lox was perfect. It did feel more like a sandwich than a bagel but again, I knew what to expect. Just go to Panera for a 2/3 dollar bagel that's way better They always close early and this is the 10th time that I have been there and they have been closed for no reason it literally says on their damn door that they're open but they had a filming crew in there with fake customers in line to order stuff and the filling crew had no idea what was going on and they were rude. It's not even worth the cheap bagels because every time I go it's always closed even when it says they should be open at that time. And the service is not that good and it's usually dirty in here anyway. Plus it takes 30 minutes for them to make your bagel at this point I'm just gonna buy the big bagels from Vons and put my own cream cheese on it it's not even convenient to go here anymore. read more

I've been coming to John's Bagel for 27 years since I was in elementary school. Although I don't regularly visit like I did when I was a child and teenager, this place has essentially stayed the same for the last 21 years! I have visited here 4 times in the last 12 months. Now for those unfamiliar with John's, these aren't the most typical bagels you buy. Montreal bagels have a bigger hole whereas New York are the most common, which are what "everyone" is typically accustomed to, but these bagels are more in line with London bagels in terms of style. However, they're definitely better classified as Bialy (bread), as they have depressions (not a hole) with their toppings. Since 1995-1998, my go-to has been the salt bagel, which became incredibly popular in the Mid 90s. Although the salt grains aren't as dense as they once were, they certain do pack a punch. I strongly recommend getting it warmed up or slicing it to put cream cheese in between. However, the cheese bagels have always been a family favorite. Depending on the bagel, the quantity of cheese can be feast or famine as they're never fully consistent. The last two times have been great, but it can vary way too much, thus a slightly lower rating. I strongly recommend having it toasted on site for the best taste overall. Microwaving or placing it in the oven is good, but not the same. As for the "usual suspects," in terms of other style bagels, they're all good if you enjoy bagels. Sure all the "roll" reviews are semi-accurate, but these bagels have always been consistent quality for decades. They're a local Ventura County and Simi Valley institution so if you want Asiago, generic or bland bagels go elsewhere. John's is definitely a very unique bagel deli and been the same for decades. read more

Come early if you want to try the different bagels. Made the mistake of going on a Saturday at 11am after I realized they were closed on Sundays and they were out of all but three kinds of bagels. Came this morning at 6:45 to get some bagels for my meeting in Irvine with clients. The young man who helped me was very nice and explained all the many flavours. I ended up getting a dozen of all kinds with cream cheese. My clients loved them! They were also huge! I will be coming back to try some for myself, especially the cinnamon and blueberry. Delicious bagels (try our signature Jalapeno & Jack Cheese!) and sandwiches (on your choice of bagel or oatmeal bread). We also have soups, salads and several varieties of cream cheese, as well as breakfast bagel sandwiches such as our South of the Border (with egg, jack cheese and jalapeno cream cheese) with additional toppings available. If you're really feeling fancy, you can always order the lox with capers on the side. Also, be warned: Our bagels have no holes. Yes, we like giving you more for your money. In truth, they are closer to a Polish "Bialy" and have two advantages over traditional, holed bagels: 1: They are "stuffable" with cheese, fruit or other fillings without fear of leakage 2: It's much easier to spread cream cheese on our bagels without any of it leaking through the middle onto your fingers.

John's Bagel Deli has been a fixture of Simi Valley since 1993, when founder John Petrillo declared war on bagels everywhere. Nowadays, as the oldest (and last) bagel deli in the city, it continues to serve its hole-less bagels and sandwiches. In fact, Simi Valley Police actually have a radio code for the deli ("JBD's") due its popularity.

As we were leaving, the manager continued yelling at us and making upsetting comments. In a moment of frustration, I threw my sandwich back toward the counter, and it struck him. He immediately pulled out his phone, put the camera directly in my face, and repeatedly stated that I was "going to jail tonight." When the police arrived, they indicated they were familiar with this manager from previous incidents and even suggested that I contact corporate regarding the way the situation had been handled. I fully acknowledge that throwing the sandwich was not the right way to respond, and I regret that action. However, I believe the manager's conduct, lack of professionalism, and repeated escalation of the situation were completely unacceptable. A manager should be focused on resolving customer concerns, not provoking further conflict. I hope this incident is taken seriously so that other customers do not have a similar experience.
