I've been coming here for 2 years, but I will no longer. The quality of the haircuts have gone down drastically. It just seems like they no longer care about giving high quality haircuts but rather just cutting the person in front of them and then moving onto the next customer. There are only a couple of people who put care into their craft, but that's only a small percentage of the everyone who works there. I always tell them the same thing and yet, I always get varying results each time, with most of the time being below average. I was in the area and wanted to get a haircut since it was my birthday, so I found this one, and I m glad I did. It was early in the morning and when I walked in, I was really surprised that this place was already PACKED!! So that tells me this place is popular! All the barbers were busy, I took my number and sat on the bench and wait for my turn. There were 2 TV inside showing basketball games to keep us entertained. TLDR: Would come back and tried another barber from this shop if they're less than 10 min drive. So probably won't return ever again. Man, picking a barber is tricky. I tried John's Barber Lounge because of my previous barber's recommendation (whom, btw, I REALLY love). I just moved from the Bay area and in the hunt of a new barber. So I called first to make sure that they do razor cuts to clean up. The guy over the phone claimed yes; so I proceeded to make an appointment. I got paired with Tony. He's nice & polite. When he asked me how I want my haircut, I specifically told him that I wanna leave my top hair and just get a cleanup on the side and back, with a high fade. Everything was fine. . .until he completely wet my hair, to the point where it drips into my ears, then he started to cut my top hair. I justified it in my mind that he probably just needed to just tidy up. When you get a haircut, it's a very vulnerable position when you're already wrapped up in your barber's cover, with them holding scissors over you. So when I sat there, not feeling mad, but slightly disappointed, I just let it go by convincing myself that my hair will grow back anyway...I already lost my trust in him. Then strike 2: he gave me the mirror to check myself out, usually indicating that he's almost done or already done. I asked if he's gonna do a cleanup on the sides, he said "oh, sure." He used his razor to do it...so definitely a letdown for me. Final WOMP moment/strike 3: he asked me if I would want to clean up the back and side with a shaver, to which I have agreed to do so. While he was going through my back side, the shaver ran out of battery because apparently he didn't charge it...so he then charged his shaver for a hot second, signaling the other barber to see if he could borrow the shaver from him, then unplugged his shaver again to continue on, not for 2 seconds, the shaver died again...I am 1000000% sure he didn't run my back side all the way through and he just abruptly took off the cover from me, indicating that we're done. I was so confused and just paid. So. . . yeah, not coming back. read more

First: They are busy before they open. So either make an appointment, or get there where you have time to chill and wait. Second: The numbering system works! Take a number, they will yell it out and you will hear them as long as you are close to the front door (you will be able to see who is next, like at a deli) Third: They know how to cut black hair (for all the brothas/sistas....you know how hard it is to find a barber that knows how to do it right out here in OC. Well established barber shop. I have been going to this place since they first open the shop at the same plaza beside the liquor store. At first, service was great, the owner seems to be running the store pretty well, friendly to customers, n great small number of staffs. Once u come in, then u pick a ticket and when it's your turn, John will tell you where to sit and enjoy your haircut. And it works just fine. So after coming to this place for almost 2-3 yrs, it got bigger n the crowds start coming in. Sometimes u need to wait for more than an hour just for a decent haircut. So the last time i came here, i got my ticket n wait for my turn. After a long hour of waiting, John called me n he said it was my turn. But unfortunately he got the order wrong somehow and he said mine is going to be next. And i wait again until he called my name. And after about 15 minutes he called me and told me where to go. Once i sat down, took off my jackets, i told my barber what kind of haircut i want. Then out of nowhere, John called my barber n John told him "he's next!" Next thing you know, my barber told me to get up and wait for turn again. I was so embarrassed, all the barbers seems to be confused and customers were looking at me. I've been here 6 times now, and it will probably be my last. The reason for me is the lack of personal attention coupled with the disconnected vibes of the barbers. At $21 + tip a cut without an appointment, meaning you're going to wait well over an hour, there are better options in the area. The place is well run and always packed so that's a great start. However, it is small and parking seems to always be an issue. Upon entering, you pull a ticket and the wait game begins. The barbers do take their time and seem to focus on details, and amazing cuts can be had here. But, while waiting this can feel like eternity, especially when multiple people have prior appointments. It is a random draw on who you get once your number is called. As I said, I've been here 6 times and received fairly good cuts each time. The first 3 times I had different barbers, and my final 3 times I've randomly gotten the same barber. Now, I have unique hair and have seen this same guy in a short time frame, tipped well each time, and got zero acknowledgment that he had ever met me. I showed him a picture of the style I was going for explained exactly what I wanted. He said ok and went to work never striking up any conversation. After a while he handed me the mirror for me to check to see if the work was good. He missed a major portion of the cut, a trim and evening out of the top, so he basically just gave me a side touch up. But, I had places to be because of the long wait so just said it was fine. I cashed out and headed on my way with less than 3 words spoke to me. So the two stars, really 2.5, came about because for all the options in the area it seems overpriced for what you get. No rinse out after the cut. No straight razor neck clean up. No conversation with the barbers. Barbers having conversations with themselves about all the cool things they do besides cut hair. Not being able to face a mirror and offer feedback on how you like the cut while it's happening. And, extreme wait times without an appointment. Even for an additional $5 appointment fee I've still watched people wait and not get better service. read more

I've had this place bookmarked forever and I don't even know what took me so long to take my son here. They're fairly busy, but to me that's a good thing because it means they get a lot of repeat customers. Something I've had trouble with in South County is finding a shop that can cut my sons hair correctly because he's mixed. I had been going to Stews and they would have my sons hair cut each time in less than 10 min which just seemed way too fast with no attention to detail. The one thing I immediately noticed at Johns was that all the barbers were making sure every single cut was perfect. It was at that moment I knew we were in the right place. As a mom I'm not well versed in men's haircuts so I really had to trust our barbers take on what I wanted my sons hair to look like was. He hit the nail on the head though and my sons hair was exactly how I wanted. John's is definitely the only place we will go now for my sons hair. I've been coming to John's Barber Lounge for the last couple years because my friend Jarred started working there, and I've never been disappointed. The owner is really nice, they have like 8-10 barbers in there, and they all seem to leave their customers looking good. They could get pretty busy, but just make an appointment, and you'll get your cut in no time. I always get my haircut by Jarred, and he does an outstanding job every time. I'd highly recommend asking for him when getting a haircut. I always leave feeling good about my hair, and when I tell Jarred I have something important coming up that I want to look good for, he always seems to make my hair look extra good. Not gonna lie... JP fucked my shit up bad. I showed him a video of how I wanted my hair and gave him a long explanation. I ended up walking out looking like I just went to boot camp. It ain't even funny bruh, I would post pics, but it legit is the worst haircut I have ever gotten. Not only is it not what I was looking for, it's uneven completely, my fade is super patchy, and my hair goes in and out. I just found my new barber shop! This place opened up about a year ago, and the staff is really friendly as soon as you walk in. A bit hard to find since the sign is in the corner of a small complex but there's only one parking lot for the entire complex so you won't miss it. This place seems to always be crowded and they do the number system so make sure to grab a number right when you walk in. They usually have about 5 barbers working, and they all seem really experienced. This isn't a normal cheap barber that cares more about quantity over quality in a day, and the ambiance gives off a hip type of vibe. It is $15 for a cut, and when I was done, it felt like I got a $40 haircut. I've been to a ton of different barbers, including really pricey ones and this place cuts just as good. I was lucky enough to get cut from ANGELO, and the attention to detail that this guy has is amazing. He spent quality time on my fade and made it looks flawless. His scissor work on the top of my combover was also perfect. I asked him to texture it, which most barbers don't know how to do and it looked/felt great. I've been going here for sometime and I wanted to give an honest review for those of you really looking for an in depth opinion about this place. I'll start off by saying that although this place does amazing work, don't just pop in on your break or on the weekend and expect to be out quick unless you have a super easy cut job like a buzz. Not only is this place often filled with customers but it's also apparent that the barbers themselves are doing their job to the best of their ability. Both of those combined could easily make for a 45min to an hour long visit depending on your needs. You can speed up the process by calling ahead and making an appointment if you are willing to pay the small extra charge for it. Each barber does their job a little bit differently from one another. That being said, if you are new and/or haven't found someone specific yet, it's good to experiment with everyone before you finally tag someone to be your personal transaction. I personally have had my hair cut by 2-3 different barbers there before I finally stuck to Jennifer, whom I shamelessly promote and admire her attention to detail and natural eye for men's hair specifically. Now I always call ahead to make sure she's there before I go. Find who works best with you and for your hair. Speaking of which, although this should apply to ALL barber shops, it helps to go in and know precisely what you want. Communicate with the barber and be specific so there is nothing left to interpretation. It will also speed the process up. Just a tip! Overall, the atmosphere gives off a modern, urban man vibe and is a great chill spot that always has the game running or some other program on the big screen. The barbers are hard working and have their own unique style, so experiment with a few before sticking to someone and remember to save yourself some time just to make the experience more enjoyable for yourself by not feeling rushed. Also, if you happen to show up on the rare occasions when John brings his dog to work, consider yourself lucky! He's awesome! That's all I have to say. I was pleasantly surprised to find JBL and have been there twice as of this review. Best haircut my son has ever had done, he's only five and a half haha but he wears his hair short so he does need to get it done every month or so. He picked a picture after I helped him look up a "cool" haircut on Google. It was short and faded on the back/sides with a side part, and long at the top. The barber used wax to give it that greaser kinda look. It was amazing. Everyone loved it! It's not cheap so I can't afford to take him all the time but we'll definitely be back on special occasions to achieve that super stylish haircut since dad has tried more than once to take him to his hairstylist to prove me wrong by saying anyone can get it done.. but nope! They are geared more towards the young to middle-aged crowd, but that doesn't mean grandpa can't get his hair cut here. Three stars is an average of five for the cuts and one for the noise. Down from a previous review with five. The good news is that I've never had a bad haircut here or had to wait very long. But on the most recent visit, I almost left before we started. Usually, they have music playing and a TV or two on but muted. This time one was muted, but the other had ESPN on, showing the closed captioning, with the sound at full volume - as loud as the music. I asked the stylist if it could be muted, and he said no. It was no fun to sit through all the noise. The stereo is a good system and anyone who was interested could read what the TV guys were saying. Playing them both at equal volume ruins them both. I can't speak for others, but I am sure they are good, too. This review is for John whom I definitely recommend. He is an amazing barber. If you have any requests, he will do it. I really love how he takes his time with cutting your hair (that is the most important thing I look for in a barber) and he doesn't rely too much on the trimmer unlike other barbers. He is extremely focused and careful while doing his work. Also I am mentioning this because I know this will be helpful to others. I made an appointment for a 9:30 AM on a weekday. You would think it be empty and nobody would have to wait in line with five barbers but NOOOOO... this place gets packed and I can't even imagine on the weekends. That is how good they are.
