You wouldn't expect it but for the money, this place is the best diner within a couple of blocks of Pratt Institute. John's looks extremely meek on the outside, with a simple text banner on red but on the inside it looks exactly as good as all the other diners in the area. Their donuts have a texture unlike the airy likes of Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme and while their supply is surprisingly limited, its worth getting one if you want it. ...and yes, their burger and fries are as good as all the other diners in the area. read more

When I lived in the neighbor hood I used to hit John's Twice a day. Once for breakfast, Little eggs and bacon and a tea and again in the afternoon for lunch, always switch it up for that second meal. With a couple of competing diners and a plethora of emerging eateries johns holds it own. its customer base is constant. Its a diner, You can get and eat whatever you want at a highly affordable price. John's is exactly what you need after a night of big drinking. Sometimes a bit of a wait but for a good reason. It's a small diner with just a few booths and a counter. Great cheap coffee and great cheap dishes. $3.50 gets you eggs, taters, meat and toast. Their bagel sandwiches are also greased to perfection. Never had anything aside from the glorious breakfasts but my brother had good things to say about the cheeseburger. Only open til 4 in the afternoon and thats all it really needs to be. Saturday mornings are packed and the place is pretty small to begin with BUT they get people seated really fast and the customer service is always above and beyond. IMO, pancakes define a diner, it's the simplest dish to make on the menu yet many places flunk in this area, but not so with John's; this place does this well and something else I've overlooked... blue berry muffins! Wonderfully toasted! Their burgers were good too. Only one knock, I prefer the soft butter they have near the grill instead I got that nasty butter packet, clearly frigerated, that took forever to melt on my pancake. Not a deal breaker. I have been to some of the big brunch spots in New York, I would say the breakfast at John's Coffee Donut Shop isn't far fetched from that. Maybe just not as glamorous. Diner food is by far my favorite in the morning and this place takes the cake (pancakes, that is). I order the same thing everytime: eggs over easy, whiskey-down (rye toast), sausage links and potato hash. My mom always told me to eat slowly but when this plate arrives, I engulf it, I inhale it, I experience it! Some Tappy's hot sauce over everything and I'm in breakfast heaven. The place is tiny, a long rail of one-seaters and about 6 booths to the side but the food is fast as all get-out and the staff is friendly as hell. This is a moment where I will readily admit that I am letting my love for old-time-y New York Diner-ness get in the way of my usually more measured approach to rating. I just totally love this place. It's got a great counter and a few booths, the menu is above the counter, there are glass displays with large home made pound cake, it's only open for breakfast and lunch, and the space behind the counter is a flurry of shouted orders, slinging food, and plates shuffling in and out. It's outrageously cheap. A cheeseburger with fries will cost you just a little over $5. Breakfast is even less. The food is...fine, not bad, not great, what you should expect for $5, but no worse. There are little surprises though: for example, it's not on the menu, but if you ask they'll make banana, chocolate chip pancakes that are quite good. The service is always prompt and sweet. It's the one time when I don't mind that the older men behind the counter call me "sweetheart", and "honey". This place just makes me feel good about everything every time I go, and if that does not deserve five stars, I really don't know what does. read more

Whenever a Jersey girl becomes a Brooklyn girl she needs two things: a new local diner and a mall to call her own. The latter is tricky, there's nothing like a Jersey mall. And while there isn't anything quite like a Jersey diner either a few come pretty darn close. Some capture the essence and add their own Brooklyn swag. And they do it all on the classic green stripe plates and mugs, and home fries cooked by the pound on a grill that I love to watch them work on, but know better than to watch them clean. Yes, John's Coffee & Donut Shop gets it, in the best of ways, and now it gets my heart too. They had me at the first bite of chocolate chip pancakes that were oh-so-fluffy (it's so fluffy!) and chocolate chips that were gooey and melty. Every bite had a chip. That's how you do it! Slippery runny sunny side up eggs that make perfect use of that buttery toast that never seems to come out that perfect when I toast bread at home. Why is toast always better at a counter? And a little bit of bacon to really fill you up, in case you were feeling like a slacker after three chocolate chip pancakes. It's all good....so good. I wish I lived closer, so much that I started wondering if maybe it was time to move about halfway through breakfast. In the meantime, it's worth the weekend trip. read more
