My son with his first guinea pig

John is amazing! I am always able to get the specific brand and type of dog food my pups need for their sensitive tummies. We bought our gerbils, Budgie, Lenny, and Kakariki parakeets from him along with a few other small animals over the year since his first shop opened. He never acts like I'm unintelligent when we talk. He knows that I've been a small animal bird and reptile owner for most my life? Even though I am very knowledgeable, questions still pop up and he is always willing to answer then and discuss solutions. He is very caring and takes care of all his animals very well. I have never came in when he is not cleaning cages, feeding the animals or being attentive to customers present. He is also great with my son who has tons of questions about everything. He would never be rude to anyone, unless they were causing a problem in the store.

    Bucky our baby!

We got our seven week old cockatiel baby from john and we are absolutely in love with our baby. John is super nice and helpful and very, very knowledgeable! I would recommend going to this place to any and everyone.

    McCaw

I hate having to write this Review ... But, I want to save the Reader a Trip to Raytown - I had read a few Good Reviews on John's Exotic's when doing a Google Search for Hand Tamed Parrots ... They don't have a Web Site, but I thought what the Heck ... I am looking for a Cockatiel or Caique Parrot ... so, I drove 30 minutes to Raytown. The Place is VERY HARD to find - even in the Parking Lot you have to strain to see it. About 20 feet from the Door I am thinking - doesn't look like a Pet Store, But I went in anyway. Wow .... Complete Dump .... Dirty ... they had a hand full of Birds and honestly, I felt sorry for them. The Topper is in the back they had a McCaw that looked like he had not been cared for. The Worst Part ? The McCaw is on a Stand - I see Dog Sxxx everywhere and the smell is terrible. Turns out the Bird Stand is in the Middle of a Makeshift Pen with Beagle Puppies running around. So here is Majestic McCaw - with Beagle Puppies stressing it out and living in the Stinch f Dog Sxxx Save the Drive - it's a Dump

He swears this is His picture, so I was sure to screenshot my own pic so that the date would be visible to this guy. He's very rude/mean

Amazing amount of birds and small animals. You can tell they're well cared for... food and other items for the animals too.

Picked her up and she looked better but when I got her in the truck I noticed a little odor. Was not sure if it was her until I got home. She was not as strong but I could still smell her. When I petted her my hands stunk, too. Her hair looked like it had been brushed a bit but back on her hind-quarters she had had a lot of under fur bunching up. As I petted her and ran my hand across her flank, tufts of hair were flying out. She obviously had been brushed to some extent but not adequately as there was still fur flying. $64 for the whole thing and I think they brushed her a bit, maybe put something on her fur a little to help with some odor but not sure. If they bathed her it was a lousy job as she still stinks. I can smell her when she walks up behind me in my office. It does appear they did her claws. Very disappointed. We have had fairly good results in the past but will probably find somewhere else to go now.

The employees were unprofessional and outright disrespectful, specifically Taylor and Katelynn. When I asked a simple questions to the receptionist about their fees, Taylor and Katelynn stood by laughing right in my face and making faces to each other as if I wasn't even there. They exchanged looks and made faces while discussing my questions, which felt extremely rude and demeaning. I was shocked by how they handled what should have been a basic, courteous interaction. I've had issues with Taylor in the past informing me that a fee would be $15, only to pick up my pet and the price hiked to $40. This level of unprofessionalism is unacceptable, and I won't be returning to this location or probably any other PetSmart if I don't have to. If they would treat me horribly, right in front of my face, these aren't people I'm trusting with my pet.

I was looking at the bags to see if there was fresh cat food. My friend and I had been talking looking at the bags and hadn't heard the lady running the store. All of a sudden out of nowhere I hear a very hateful raised voice say "I've asked you 5 times if you're looking for price" I looked at her and told her 1) we never heard her the first time 2) to never speak to her customers in that hateful tone again. I was about to buy treats and fresh cat food. Because of her hatefulness I set everything down and walked my happy butt out. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IF YOU'RE LOOKING TO BUY FROM KIND LOCAL OWNERS. THIS LADY WAS GOD AWFUL TO BE AROUND AND I WILL NEVER BE GOING BACK. I WILL ALSO TELL EVERYONE I KNOW HOW TERRIBLE THAT LADY WAS. Other reviews mention unwelcoming and rude behavior. This lady is obviously a huge problem! I have since read other reviews and believe that we did experience passive aggressive behavior and feel like we were being judged for what we look like. We are two Hispanic women. Do with that information what you will. I will make it my mission to tell everyone to spread the word about how inappropriate this lady was.

His groomer, Carolyn saw what happened & took off full speed running after him. He's a little Havenese, fast & scared. He was gone. Folks at PetSmart got in their cars searching. People came out of nowhere saying he went that way. He crossed Independence Ave., Chipman, and back towards 291. Five cars on 291 stopped-circled him with their cars & a big bearded pickup truck driver, Jessie (who has five dogs) talked him down to stop. He didn't have his collar on but he did have a PetSmart bandanna on from grooming. Brought back to PS covered in black sewer muck from his escapade (and all over Jessie). Carolyn gave him another bath & hand delivered to the car. Thank you PetSmart, Jessie, Jon (motorcycle guy who helped) & the fabulous folks of Lee's Summit for helping us bring this little guy home.

I'd advise taking care with fish- they use RO water, so drip acclimation will be necessary if you're on KC tap water. The Pygmy's cories I got from them were healthy, but they needed a slow acclimation to be put into my quarantine. They're now in the display. They're knowledgeable about their fish and plants (I'd assume salt water as well, but I don't have a saltwater tank, so I can't say one way or the other). The plants I've purchased from them have been great, except for one buce brownie tissue culture that melted and hasn't come back, but apparently my tank doesn't like buce, because I've tired multiple times, and buce melts and never come back, so I don't fault them for that. Their plants are nearly always in good shape and happy. I did buy some downoi that was super leggy, and so I trimmed it to use only the best of it. It's there, in the tank, and I'm watching to see what it does. But the tissue culture of the downoi I got from them really took off, and is propagating just fine. Their cost is in line with online sellers when you factor in shipping. I'll continue to use them. I've been pleased with the knowledge of the employees and their locality.
