We were excited to support local businesses so went to Johns for dinner. Very good crab/shrimp roll and fries. The buttered New England roll that it's served on was delicious and very authentic to a seafood roll you'd get back East. A nice quaint corner restaurant in the heart of Roscoe Village. John's was packed inside and out on a Sunday at 2/230pm. We were seated promptly. The menu is small, page one more sugary/breakfast food such as pancakes & donuts, with page 2 being for the burgers. My boyfriend ordered the Cowboy burger and I built my own traditional burger. The burgers come with Lettuce, tomato, and pickles. I asked for no tomato. I saw no option for raw onion, but asked if they could give me that in lieu of sauteed, which they were accomadating. American cheese and bacon to finish it off, with a doneness of medium rare. My burger came out with just the raw onion I asked for, and was missing the lettuce and pickles. It took a while for the waitress to bring back the missing vegetables, so my burger sat there uneaten. When I ate the burger, it was a dry medium rare, which is a sign that when they pressed the patties, they did so too hard. My boyfriend's burger was messy with a lot of the Merkt's pub cheddar, onion jam, and chipotle sauce. He wound up scraping his pattie off with excess toppings. All in all, John's Place is average, and nothing special. I'm not saying boo to it, but I wouldn't consider this a must stop with all the other restaurants on this strip. read more

They use Chow Now, which fraudulently makes you think they are the delivery company-- you are paying a marketing company, who pays a delivery company - Door Dash. We deleted Door Dash from our phones because the food has always been cold and late (40 minutes late tonight-- and 4 phone calls later we figure out what happened). I had a downright lovely lunch today at John's Place! My colleague Andrea R suggested we meet here for a Roscoe Village lunch, and to her surprise...I've never been. To be quite honest, I've avoided it because its a baby/family magnet and when presented with the opportunity to try it we always opt for elsewhere. However, midweek/midday lunch? Perfect Quiet, but still comfortably buzzing with lunchers. Our server and service was actually quite exceptional (hat tip to the red bearded fellow behind the bar). Very friendly, accommodating, sweet. Truly, maybe he was just happy we didn't have any messy toddlers with us? Regardless, it was a very pleasant meal and he was super helpful. I had the John's Chopped Chicken wrap with sweet potato fries (oh yes, get the sweet potato fries!). The goat cheese was the perfect complement (and all of their cheeses are pasteurized, in case you are eating for two...as Andrea is!) and it was just the right balance between filling and light. Get those sweet potato fries. Get 'em! I really enjoyed my lunch. A really lovely place to lunch. It's a madhouse on the weekends, but this is prime for a relaxed lunch or brunch during the week. Friday night city excursion... Our waiter deserves a trophy after serving my grouchy hungry kids and two parents who were at their wits end just wanting to get them fed. We fought hard and were determined to stop at a cool city restaurant in our old hood, when the truth is my kids were obsessed with getting a calzone from Pockets. Okay... no. Not never, just not tonight. I remembered John's Place on Webster being super family-friendly, and so I was hoping the vibe would be the same here. I figured as much, being in Roscoe Village and all, but I called ahead to see if they had a kids menu. Yep! Score! We made the stop in, two tired hungry kids who were ready to kill each other at this point, and thankfully we found an open table. It was refreshing to walk past other families dining. We grabbed the kids menu and got to ordering right away. I was impressed with the options (see menu picture), but it's hard with growing eight-year old boys who require basically adult-sized portions, but not quite. Once the half-cup of water came out for them, we knew we were in trouble and decided to order a bunch of things off the kids menu for variety. Our waiter was super helpful to guide us with the perfect sides that they could split and mix up to make their experience fun. We ordered sliders for each of them and then a side of fries and mac n' cheese. Perfect! Of course we had to be careful to separate everything equally and not mix any spit (their request), but we managed with the request of an extra plate. I must say, the mac n' cheese rocks! It's well-seasoned and super gourmet. We ordered fried cheese curds for the table, and I want one right now as I'm writing this! Lightly fried in a batter mixed with onions to make the flavor supreme. I ordered a turkey burger with fresh greens, Merkt's cheddar, mushrooms and avocado. Sadly, the burger wasn't for my taste buds. Just too rich and garlicky, but I tried. Hubby got the veggie wrap, and it was a ginormous portion with hummus and all sorts of veggies inside. John's Place was the first place I had ever tried a sweet potato fry in my life (many years ago), so of course I ordered those up as my side. Still soft and basic so you can really taste the potato. Overall, our experience was lovely. But it was time to go after my son took my lemon and put it in his mouth like a boxer's mouth guard and pretended to start boxing. I don't have obnoxious kids, I really don't, but at this point we were just done. Still love you John's Place. We will be back! read more

The burger here was good, but at those prices I would rather get one from Kuma's. The chipotle mashed potatoes were the bomb though! Service was good, and the space is small, but cute. While I still think 3 stars is fair for John's Place for dinner, I think they have a very lovely brunch, hence the 4 stars. I came here after a nice 3-mile jog on the lake front path, as we wanted to try some place new, so John's Place it was! They have a wide selection, that include your standard omelette, scrambled eggs, pancakes, etc. They also have some nice Mexican themed choices, such as Chiliquiles and Mexican Hash. I ordered a bunch of sides, because they didn't have exactly what I wanted, but I was pleasantly satisfied! The chocolate chip pancake was, in a word, awesome. For some reason, I've had a craving lately for chocolate chip pancakes, and any place that has 'em is a winner for me. Also ordered the scrambled eggs, bacon, and multigrain toast. All yummy! Lastly, the coffee here is super delicious and STRONG. It's intelligentsia coffee and so so good. We were all really satisfied with our brunch, and I can't wait to come back! read more

2.5: If only .5 meant round down! I've been here twice and both times I've walked away fairly disappointed. The first was two years ago, but all I remember was that I told myself never again. I broke that promise to myself about a month ago. I had a better experience this second time, but nothing to come back for. I had a garlic chicken dish that was interesting, but lacked the strong flavor tones that make a dish pop. The lunch cost me 15 dollars for the dish and a drink which is definitely not a everyday meal cost I allow myself. My friend and I agreed that this place is meant for the yuppie mothers that need their wine and "day time drinks" after dropping their kids off at day care or with their Latina nanny. We've been going to John's since moving to the neighborhood about 5 years ago. It was a solid, neighborhood go-to joint with great service and good food at a decent price. But as the menu has changed we've noticed food quality and quantity steadily going down while prices rose drastically. Average burger/sandwich is now $12-$14 which is pricey for a great burger, and just plain silly for a mediocre one. But one thing that always go to us... At one point we were in there several times a week, sometimes twice in one day when I didn't feel like cooking! The staff knew us by name, and John saw us there regularly. Yet he never ONCE comped a single thing or so much as offered us a drink on the house. Seriously? I'm no expert but I would think a free drink every 5 years or so might be worth keeping some business :) We go back maybe once a month now and all it does is remind of us why we don't go any more. Doesn't seem so busy these days either. Hopefully John will get the hint and make some changes. read more

I never even knew this place existed until last night! And I have ask myself, could it be due to the name of this joint? It certainly doesn't scream "I am a really good restaurant, eat here!" I went with a large group of friends--this place is small, so you definitely want to make a reservation. Our table ordered a variety of different dishes: Chicken Parm, Chopped Cobb Salad, Teriyaki Salmon, Chicken Pot Pie... all seemed to be pleased with their meals. I especially enjoyed my salmon... and the mashed potatoes! Everything you've heard about the chipotle mashed potatoes is true! OH MY, it was like heaven in my mouth. This place is so gross, not sure why it has so many positive reviews. Service is fine and the atmosphere is nice ( very kid friendly). The food is just OK and overpriced. I understand it is convenient for those living in Roscoe Village, but every time my family and I eat here we regret it. Not worth a drive if you don't live down the street, and if you do live nearby i would advise walk ing a few blocks down and eating at Pizza Bella, Victory's Banner, or Kitsch'n instead. read more

They were busy, but still, it wasn't acceptableWalked to the counter to get seated/placed on a wait list. There was no one at the counter. However, there were a handful of people magically behind me in the same situation. When the food arrived, I had asked for an extra napkin. Waitstaff didn't come back with a napkin until I was done with my meal. Asked for a to go box, it never came. Had to flag another member of waitstaff. I think these are simply requests, and not over demanding. Didn't appreciate being overlooked/forgotten. YMMV here in terms of service. read more

I had lunch there for the first time today. I know most people don't give two shakes about vegetarians (which I am one). But this place does. They have plenty of options for meat-eaters. However, they have several options on their menu for us non meat-eaters. I had a delicious three bean soup and tofu, veggie bowl. It was yummy. Roscoe Village village has plenty of options for a nice weekend brunch, but John's Place with one of my favorites when I lived in the neighborhood. The service is always friendly, and the food was always good. Roscoe Village is a very family friendly area so there may be a lot of kids there when you visit. If lots of strollers don't bother you then John's place is a lovely place to have lunch. I would highly recommend the crab and shrimp roll! read more

I gave this place a couple tries, and ...ugh. The food is very good, but It's the atmosphere, service and bar that bring this place down. First of all, the atmosphere - bottom line: Unless you're a yuppie mom in a juicy couture track suit with a range rover sized stroller yapping on your phone while your kid whines and throws food...you will NOT enjoy the atmosphere. Definitely don't go in there for happy hour, otherwise known as dinner time for the kids. There were strollers every few feet, kids running around (I guess I'm supposed to think it's cute when someone else's kids comes up to my table while I'm eating), and the slowest service ever. I suppose this place could be appealing to you if you have kids - they obviuosly cater to families - it just doesn't exactly make for a great happy hour or dinner spot for anyone else. Now the bar - They claim to have a great wine selection, which is true, but no one behind the bar seems to know anything about it. Including how to pour...these bartenders short pour EVERYTHING including the wine. They either don't know what a proper glass of wine is, or assume the customers don't - either way I would rather go down the street to the Four Moon where they don't have as much of a selection, but the bartenders know about the wine they are pouring. Overall, this place has a kind of soulless vibe, alot of kids running around and mediocre service. I say pass. read more

When you've had a busy December, the one thing you don't want to do on a date night is scream at the top of your lungs in order to enjoy your mealdate. I knew Roscoe Village would be sleepy enough but offer plenty of variety for dinner. We went to John's Place on the Thursday night before NYE. We checked out the menu from the outside and struggled to find one dish we wanted to try -- because we wanted to try all of them. We walked through the winter drapes and were seated immediately. We were delighted to see a full bar, but opted for the $5/glass of ANY wine on the menu instead. The menu is small but, honestly, the right size. Had there been more we would still be choosing. We went straight to dinner after a cuppa soup (corn chowder, if I remember) which was amazing. My wife had the seafood bisque and I the turkey burger. Both were just right. The soup had the perfect blend of flavors but not to overwhelm the fish bits. We skipped dessert. So, in all, the bill was just $30 with tip and three glasses of wine. Not bad for a simple supper. We will definitely go back to check out more of the menu. read more

I had some chilaquiles... eggs (whites in my case) mixed with fried tortillas and chihuahua cheese and topped with a tomatillo sauce. Delicious. My friend has Steak and Eggers... basically a mock eggs benedict with Filet on a slice of brioche (I think...) and topped with poached eggs and covered in some delicious non-hollandaise sauce. He said it was quite possible the best breakfast he ever ate. I swear. 4 stars because they told my friend that they were out of filet and asked if they could substitute flank steak. Really like this addition to the Roscoe corridor. I LOVE their Huevos Rancheros. Everything we've had in our three visits has been delicious, and the service has been consisitently spot on. The menu had a great variety of healthy options with some comfort food too. I got the southwest chicken salad and it was perfect. I'm going to update my 2 to a 3 because I had a pretty good turkey burger there for lunch. Staff is friendly, service was quick, but I'm still not that thrilled about their prices. With tip, it was about $11 for a turkey burger and fries. The turkey burger was good for a quick fix, but it's not the absolute best I've ever had, and I guess I have pretty high standards. The atmosphere is relaxed and it's an easy place to just pop in for a quick bite to eat. I was disappointed that their fish tacos are considered only a dinner item and are not available at lunch time. My boyfriend and I recently enjoyed a late Sunday afternoon lunch here, long after any sort of Sunday brunch rush they might have had. Overall, we like our lunches (and our cocktails) and we'll definitely be back, hopefully for dinner. Service was wonderful. Attentive, informative, laidback, but never overbearing. A couple of tips for improvement: While my veggie burger and my boyfriend's omelette were delicious, the fries were extremely lackluster. Maybe that's Karma's way of telling me I should lay off the papas fritas, but I was disappointed in the fries, especially because everything else was such good upscale pub grub. Lastly, the ketchup and mustard bottles were, to put it delicately, a bit gross-looking. There was excessive dried condiment caked around the bottle openings, and they could have used a nice cleaning before making their way to our table. But really, the food and service were great, and if you're looking for some nice pub food in Roscoe Village, I'd recommend John's Place. read more
