It's so hard to write a review on a place in a little tiny town with not a ton of food options. Needless to say, I felt I had to write this. Had to, wanted to, whatever. John's place is in a former fast food restaurant that has been updated. You walk in and it seems quite confusing whether you order 1st or sit down. Apparently, it has table service so just plant your butt. The menu has a wide variety of options, from breakfast to salad, to burgers, to mexican, etc. Lots of choices. My friend asked about the chili. The waitress said she really liked it and asked my friend if she wanted a taste. Friend said sure. I made a crack after the fact about it being hormel chili. No way some restaurant with a huge menu is cooking that from scratch. Sure enough hormel-type chili it was. I ordered a turkey burger with avocado and jalapenos. The server didn't tell me about any additional charges, but I guess I didn't assume any since the menu says an avocado burger is $7, a turkey burger is $7, and a jalapeno burger is $6. She told me it came with a side and drink so I picked zucchini fries and hot tea. The tea never came. No biggie. The zucchini fries were good...very well battered. Tasted fairly fresh. The turkey burger was your run of the mill Jenny O. Frozen patty, but I wasn't expecting all that much after the chili. I did see a delicious looking taco salad and had major order envy. Needless to say the meal was ok. Not mind blowing, but decent for what I assumed would be about $10. Then I get the check and somehow my burger with side item (and drink that supposedly came with) was $14. Sort of ridiculous when I think about how basic and cheap the ingredients are. All said it was a mediocre meal for an upcharge. At least we had a good restaurant to crack on for the rest of the time spent in 29 Palms. read more

Love their fried zucchini and ranch. The taco salad is huge and so yummy. Their waffles were so surprising, they're liege waffles with lovely crunchy chunks of sugar pears throughout, makes syrup entirely unnecessary. In order to manage my time I placed an order over the phone. I planned to get there, pay, receive my food and get going. Instead, I was stalled because they didn't get my order right. Meanwhile I waited for it, I received half of my order which was now sitting, getting cold. I then got the rest of it and drove home which is a 4 minute drive from here only to discover that my burger was soggy and my onion rings were falling apart. I felt disappointed with the quality of the food and with the prices, my burger was very salty the onion rings were bland and poorly handled and the pricing on the menu wasn't accurate. read more

First Time Customer, Long Time Watcher. I haven't actually eaten my burger just yet I'm sitting in the car waiting for these lovely ladies to put together my order, but my pregnancy craving drove me out of the house for a Steak n Shake burger, (30mins) which is entirely too far away at 6:00pm, and my husband told me to go HERE. They are the KINDEST bunch and are totally fantastic service- as I have prided my career on being an excellent customer service deliverer -the girls waited as I went through the menu, answered all of my questions, allowed me to wait in the pickup-que while they prepared my meal. It's the most AMAZING place im about to eat at and you should stop by if not to get one of their "always fresh never frozen" burgers, then to have a pink lemonade mixed with raspberry tea. I was dreaming about it when I was getting ready to head out and I'll tell you right now, I'd rather sit in my car and wait for these incredible -she's handing my my double burger with onion rings and fries and brownie+chocolate ice cream xoxoxo- women! For time reference- I was waiting about 20 minutes and this took me about 5 to write. To put it simply -- small-town, friendly dining is epitomized in this establishment. My boyfriend and I ate there twice before and after some backcountry camping in Joshua Tree and could not have been more impressed. The food was exceptional and the service was fast and friendly. We ordered a lot of items, and each was superb. The prices are incredibly reasonable, as well. It does not get any better than John's Place. We highly recommend it! read more

I will not go back here! Normally I do not complain about restaurants, but this is an exception. It took us literally an hour to get our food, and this was BEFORE the place got packed! The waitresses kept telling us our food was on the way. This went on for an hour! We would have left, but kept thinking our food "was on the way". The service was not so great. My husband and I have both worked in the food industry and did not receive the best service. We showed up at 1:00pm and as soon as we walked in we were greeted by a busy waitress. The beginning was nice with timing and politeness. As soon as we sat down a server walks up to us no more than three minutes with two menus. As the waitress arrived to our table she asked us what we wanted to drink before handing us our menus (first time customers), we don't know what's on the menu. We felt rushed and flipped the menu over to see the list of drinks and ordered two root beers. She walked away and while she was serving other tables, we were than waiting to place our order with her because we had the impression she was going to be our server. Twelve minutes passed (with no drinks on the table) and finally a different waitress came to greet us asking if we were ready to order. She took our order and we mentioned that the other waitress took our drink order, she stated that the other waitress was most likely going to bring them out(wrong). The second waitress ended up bringing the drinks out within two minutes after she walked away to enter our order in. She seems like she has a lot more experience serving than the first server that initially greeted us because she looked like a chicken running around with its head cut off. I got a tuna melt, it was a good sandwich but noticed they used chunky tuna which was different than an average tuna melt with a side order of pickles. The fried pickles were really good! My husband got a pastrami melt, that wasn't on marble rye like any traditional pastrami melt. It was on a hoagie bun instead, he said it was still good. He added a combo meal with fries. The fries weren't ready when his pastrami melt came out so the cook made a fresh batch but gave him a full plate of fries. I can see that he did his best with hooking my husband up and being generous but seriously who can eat a whole plate of fries?? The inside decor didn't go well with the music theme, playing oldies music is my fav but the ceiling definitely needed some work. The booths were really uncomfortable with no cushion for your bottoms only for your backs. Food was good but service was bad. read more

We went to John's place at 72132 Palms Highway after camping in Joshua tree national Forest. The coffee was wonderful, a very pleasant surprise. We were overwhelmed with an Enormous, delicious breakfast, Cooked to perfection. We had the farm breakfast and the Ortega omelette. We had two wonderful waitresses, one named "Destiny". The service was wonderful and very attentive. They even let us charge our phone while we were eating breakfast. It looked like a fast food place when we first walked in, but it was full service. We will definitely go back if we are ever in the area again. read more

This place was just okay. I got the chicken quesadilla. It had a ton of chicken but almost no cheese. The rice and beans were straight cisco products but not bad. They were pretty busy but my order only took like 10 or 15 minutes. Oh and their salad was mixed spring greens and I really appreciated that. I do like more than iceberg! read more

If this is the best breakfast for miles, I feel sorry for the locals. My pancakes were so tough I had to cut them with a knife, it was like cutting through cardboard. We went here because we had been here on a previous visit and knew t was good. This time, even better! This is one of the rare places where they keep up really good table service even when the restaurant fills up. One thing, though, it would be helpful to put ingredients on the menu, they are a rare place which has mushrooms on taco salads, and I don't eat mushrooms. To give an example of how much food they give you, it must have taken me ten minutes to pick them all out! We'll be back next trip! read more

They had a 5-star when I first found them but after today, I can say that was probably the worst subconscious customer service I have ever received. It's like they don't even want to be there, so shit service follows that. Ordered my food by phone at 2:52pm, arrived at place even later than when they said my food would be ready (25 mins, according to one girl I talked to). Got to pick-up window, they asked name for order, then charged me. Waited some more just to have them come back and ask what the name on order was! Went to "check again", came back and said she couldn't FIND order, and if we could pull to the side. Lol. At that point there was someone behind us so it kinda made sense, but still. Pulled to the front, and not even a couple mins later, the guy behind me in the drive thru was parking next to me in front of the store. Waited another 10 mins or so before I decided to go in and see what was going on. Mind you these are times where a pandemic like the one we're in have slowed down business for a place like John's. With that in mind, as we're starting to be allowed to "dine-in" again, I went in to find nobody in there but 3 workers. After having just been at the pick-up window, one girl asked me when I walk in if I was dining-in or taking out. Seriously. So the blonde girl who had been helping at the window sees me come in, and says "oh shoot", as if she'd forgotten that she had an order to fulfill, and just remembered when I walked in. Smh. Then asks me to repeat my whole order I had placed on the phone nearly an hour ago. I had some specific ingredients I wanted and didn't want on certain foods, to which I had mentioned on the original phone order, then repeated it to her in person. Not to my surprise tho, still messed that up anyway, after all that. Smh. She said okay It'll be done soon, and that she could even take it out to the car for me. Said okay, went back outside, and WAITED again for another 10 mins or so before noticing that the guy who is parked beside me, who was behind me at the pick-up window, is now going back to window to get his food. So, I go back inside, and the blonde girl who said she'd bring me my food is now leaving for the day, shift over! Smh what?! Lady you just said something, completely gave no fucks, and just said I'm out. Noticed there was food sitting in a bag when I walked in, so I asked the girl who had just came in for her shift about my food. And it's like I was coming in for the first time or I had just arrived because once again I was asked for name and/or if I had a receipt number. Lol. She said next time just give her a receipt number when I was never handed one when I originally payed. Gave me my order but was only half of what I had ordered, which is why she asked for a receipt # but I never had one. Smh. After having charged me already, and going thru that whole ord, I was still only gonna get half my order. And like I said my order was still wrong. It just blew my mind because the whole time it seemed like they just didn't give any kind of shit, to be more hospitable. Only 1 word comes to mind to describe all that: FUCKERY! Decent food, but nothing spectacular. Burger was good, but onion rings lacked any seasoning whatsoever. I'm not a huge salt user, but it literally had no flavor at all. The breading wasn't sticking well either and was falling off the rings. My friend tried to order the fried shrimp, but they were out. Chicken sandwich was OK, but again, no seasoning on the fries. Reasonable prices. Service was quite slow though for the minimal volume inside. The wait staff was very attentive and friendly. I had a huge waffle, my husband had the French toast. My only complaint would be, during the summer; I wish they had a variety of fruit plates as side dishes for breakfast or lunch. I really would have loved some fresh strawberries, black berries, or watermelon with my breakfast. But it had to be good, because we came back for lunch.
