As an American Born Chinese, I am so thrilled and PROUD to see a fellow ABC business owner prosper and grow! Joju is a historic Vietnamese Sandwich spot that intertwines the heritage of the viet Sandwich and mixes it with the NYC cultural upbringing of its owners. To me, joju is what it taste like to be an Asian American from Queens. The medley of sandwiches affords a different Experience from Vietnamese-French to Korean, Japanese, Chinese and American influences. Since it's debut from 2011 to now, they have busted their chops and have successfully branched out to 4 locations in nyc. I look forward to where they go in the next 100 years! I've been coming to this location around the time they opened. They have always been present in some way throughout milestones in my life- from having a craving with the wife (then girlfriend) to driving there after we got married and had our daughter! Gone here multiple times and each time the Bánh mi tastes great. No matter what sandwich you get it's going to be good, just depends on your taste. They load up on the picked vegetables and pack it in with your choice of filling. I have tried The Classic, BBQ Pork, Beef Bulgogi and Vietnamese Caramel Pork. I think I like The Classic the best, it's well classic. For me I think the Beef bulgogi is very sweet and the Pork is a bit sweet too but grounded up. The BBQ pork come in a sausage link like form. All the fries tastes amazing, they are all extra crispy. The toppings are very generous and delicious. If you come during their happy hour time and day you can get a drink and a small side. Service is quick and reliable with friendly staff. The space is not the biggest but it can fit about 4 tables with space in between tables. read more

Wasn't super impressed with this place despite the strong reviews. BEWARE: the beef bulgolgi bowl and other bowls that have "cabbage salad" in it - it's NOT salad, but actually coleslaw and has a ton of Mayo in it. This was a very unpleasant surprise when I was expecting a proper salad with purple cabbage and instead got nasty coleslaw. Additionally the beef was extremely fatty. It has good flavor with the sauce but would be nice if it was more actual meat. The caramelized pork sandwich was ok, nothing to brag home about. Overall I've just had better bowls and sandwiches from this cuisine (it says it's Vietnamese but seems more Asian/fusion) so I personally wouldn't revisit it unless the meat was much MEATIER and not so fatty and they use ACTUAL salad and not a lower tier overly mayonaised coleslaw. read more

Small restaurant with a bit of seating. I'm assuming they do a lot of takeout because when I ordered my food they packed it up despite my wanting to eat there. The bulgogi sandwich was absolutely amazing! I completely recommend this. I got it without kimchi because I had my daughter and she doesn't like spicy. But it was wonderful. I'd love to try it wit the kimchi for that kick. The picked vegetables were so good! Don't live in the area so probably won't be back. But you never know. From the busy tables and long line when I first came in, I knew that JoJu was gonna be good. I ordered the JoJu bowl (BBQ pork and caramelized pork) with cabbage salad, added spring rolls, and green sauce. The bowl was bigger than I expected and it definitely made me rlly full. I thought the BBQ pork was a little too dry for me but the caramelized pork tasted as good as it looked - savory and a little bit of sweetness combined. Spring rolls were a nice addition and the green sauce gave a little kick to the bowl. However, I do recommend getting it with rice instead of cabbage salad since I started to lose taste of the meat after a while because there was a lot of sliced cabbage as the base. My less sweetened Thai iced tea was honestly the perfect amount of sweetness so that was rlly satisfying. Man I was so excited to try this place after hearing and seeing all the hype! But damn I was disappointed as a mofo when I actually tried it last week. The place itself is pretty clean, modern, and had more tables than I thought they'd have. They painted their walls a pretty shade of green as well. The pricing on the items is a little bit of a red flag considering the area, especially the fries. Elmhurst is known to have a lot of good, cheap food, so I was suspicious. I got a banh mi at the pho spot about a block or two away in the same lot as the supermarket (sorry I forgot the name) and it was banging! Only cost like $4 or $4.50. And $5.50 for the fries at Joju? I was like damn, for real? Of course, it all comes down to whether the food justifies the price. I'll start with some positives because that is what I noticed first to be honest. I was impressed with how fresh the veggies seemed on the banh mi and fries. The carrots grated on the fries tasted like they were just grated. Same goes for the veggies on the banh mi. Also, this place does give you a decent quantity of food. Ok now for the negatives. The banh mi fries overall were bad because there was no meat on them. How you gonna call them 'banh mi' fries without no meat? Don't make no sense. They're just fries with carrots, cilantro, and sauce squirted on them. I felt jipped. The banh mi itself also didn't taste nearly as good as most other banh mi I've had. There was some sort of paste-like substance on the sandwich that I haven't had before and it wasn't good. Now, I know, I know... They're definitely not your traditional $5, buy 5 get 1 free banh mi spot. But fusions can be great when it's done right. And JoJu definitely proved that to me! I love my typical roast pork or combination, but they bring it up a notch when it comes to other meat and sauce selections to it. After perusing the menu, I was excited by the fusion spin on the traditional Vietnamese banh mis. The moment I entered the place, I was welcomed with an amazing smell that made my stomach rumble. Ordered the Bulgogi specialty banh mi with the runny egg and extra kimchi and the lemongrass chicken banh mi with kimchi and mayo. The Bulgogi banh mi was the winner by far out of the two. There was nothing particularly wrong with the chicken; I just didn't enjoy it as much and it felt like a chore to finish it towards the end. The bulgogi, on the other hand, was soft and flavorful and the runny egg had seeped into the bread to make the flavors come together even more. One last note: each banh mi had lots of pickled carrots and radish, but lacked the kimchi. We arrived around 6:30 pm on Sunday and found that the restaurant only offered take out or pick up options in accordance with the latest COVID-19 guidelines. With this in mind, we placed a to-go order for the "Beef Bulgogi" and "The Joju" sandwiches along with a side order of "Joju Banh Mi Fries", and Taro Milk Tea. In less than 10 minutes, our order was prepared with napkins and utensils already packed in the bag. The Beef Bulgogi sandwich tasted like how you expect it to, bursting with flavor, and pairing well with the Banh Mi. It was a tasty fusion of Korean and Viet classics with a good ratio of meat to the Bahn Mi bread. As for the Joju sandwich, the portions of cold cuts, pork pate, and bbq pork were generous and paired well with their demi-glaze sauce. I would recommend the Joju sandwich for anyone looking to order a filling sandwich for its value. A slight remark I wanted to make was that while I had requested for the sandwich to be spicy, I found it to be milder than spicy. If you are looking for a chili kick, I suggest asking for either the "More Spicy" or "Green Bomb" option. Overall, both sandwiches were refreshing with their own fun modern twist. Joju is a restaurant that takes Vietnamese cuisine and gives it a modern twist, unlike Pho Bac and Pho Bang in Elmhurst and Thai Son in Jackson Heights. Even though the restaurant is small, the service here is fast. When I entered, there were several doing takeout. I ordered The "Joju" Banh Mi, which would be equivalent to the Banh Mi Dac Biet. The last time I ordered an upgraded version was back when I attended Baruch College. The amount of pickled carrot and daikon here is generous, while the pate is flavorful. I'm sure it would be even more delicious ordering in person instead of having it delivered. Ordered two types of fries - bahn mi and kimchi. Loved both, and they definitely both had bit of spice and kick to it. Bahn mi was bit milder spice compared to kimchi as expected. Reminded me of poutine but Asian style (minus the cheese). The bomb bahn mi was the bomb. Very glad they split the sandwich into two halves and separate bags. The beef bulgolgi on it was so flavorful and the egg was on point. Such good banhmi's here. Take note that one sandwich is gigantic. If you're going by yourself, it'll be inevitable that you'll have leftovers but if you're going with a friend, I recommend getting only one sandwich and an appetizer (though I see one sandwich being suffice as well). The two that my friend and I tried were the kakuni pork belly ($7.49) and the "joju monster" ($9.49). Call me crazy but I wasn't a huge fan of the "joju monster" which was a specialized banhmi i.e. a tad bit more expensive. The runny egg was a nice touch but something about the pork pate spread seemed off to me. It could just simply be that I'm not accustomed to it and wasn't for me- just note that I found it to be an acquired taste. All the different variations of meat inside were great though I don't think it could compare to the kakuni pork belly. There was a more than adequate portion of pork belly and it felt as if it would melt in your mouth. I'm not saying that the meat in the joju/joju monster was bad, I'm just saying it didn't exactly seem like anything special to me. But the pork belly? That's something else. read more

This is one of my favorite places to go to for banh mis! Although they do take a more modern twist on just the traditional Vietnamese banh mi, I do find it to be unique and delicious. The menu ranges from classic with Vietnamese meats and pate to beef bulgogi, lemongrass chicken, and bbq porks! All of the sandwiches are always packed with pickled daikon and carrots and cilantro. The flavors are always there and never disappoint. The spring rolls are pretty good but expensive for the amount given. The fries are also one of my favorites to get! My old review from when this place first opened up must be so old that it disappeared. Many years ago, we discovered the beauty of Joju. When it was just a simple sandwich menu and yummy drinks. I don't see milk tea with coffee jelly as an option anymore which is a bummer. It has since evolved into a delicious creature of its own. My favorite dishes are the bowls. Long over due review. Review is for dine in, take out and delivery. You come here for the banh mi fries and stay for the fusion banh mi. Location - Keep an eye out for this location, as it's a little hidden in the string of store fronts. Once you find it, enter and immediately you feel something and it's a good something. Ambience - casual, and feels trendy, but if you've been coming here for more than 5+ years, you're an OG JoJu lover like myself then it's not trendy for you because you got it long before others did. Food - tried them all and my go to faves are always the beef and sometimes opting for the pork or chicken, but generally beef is my fave. The banh mi here are def more of what I'd call a fusion. They are heavier for sure and one sandwhich often lasts me two meals due to the density of ingredients and likely "heavy" feeling of the preparation sauces. It's not something I get when I want a quick snack, but rather when I am ready to eat. The banh mi fries are a must try, they seems to be double fried fries (could be wrong on this), with all the fixings on top and you can add an egg for an extra fee. They are great, again, think heavy meal vs snack. I suggest going with someone else and trying out a few things, sharing is caring after all. Food like this is meant to be shared. Preferences - I like that you can get you're preferred spice level, always opt for spiciest (jalapenos and sauce). Prices - yes, prices have gone up, like most places. I would say they are still reasonable, little higher than average IMO. Staff - Ok, so the staff at the elmhurst location is just phenomenal everytime I go.
