Local BBQ joint in a converted gas station. Curb appeal for days. You want to love this, right? You should, yeah? But, um.... I was at work today and KK was out picking up from a vendor around lunch time and gave me the call. He is so good at bringing back tasty stuff for us, so when he said he was at this BBQ place I hadn't heard of he had me at BBQ. I tried to pull up their website online but it's parked at godaddy, so I found them on one of the delivery sites and told KK I wanted a brisket sandwich. The sides were confusing. You could choose one and the choices were: sauce, potato salad, bbq beans. Wait, what? Sauce is a side now? I thought it was a condiment. Well, I can't have a brisket sandwich without some sauce so I forewent a more traditional side in the name of flavor. My selection cost me $13.50 plus tax and tip. KK returned with the goods. I opened the box. First impressions: 1) the sandwich was on the smaller side; 2) I had TWO sides of sauce, so I asked my brosef what side he picked. He said he didn't care about sauce so he picked the potato salad, then lifted the lid, and lo and behold, he had sauce and potato salad. So the moral of this story is: they include sauce, you don't need to order it as a side. Maybe they should consider relabeling that side option something like, "EXTRA SAUCE (1 is already included and probably adequate for this small sandwich)." Call me what you will, I'm a fan of clear communication. It wasn't just the online app which showed this, KK said it was like that at the touch screen he ordered on as well and that it also threw him. OK, so the sandwich was pretty small. They use a seeded hot dog bun. They gave it a smash to make it look wider, but it's not my first day, I know a hot dog bun when I see it, and I'm not talking footlong. The app where I perused showed a brisket sandwich-which looked bigger, with slices of brisket. Mine had chopped beef on it. Yeah, it could have been chopped brisket, idk. To be fair, the sandwich was tasty. The sauce was good enough, but one container was plenty, I didn't even touch the extra one I took as a side. I wouldn't rule Jon Jon's out. Maybe the brisket sandwich just isn't the thing over there. One plate of 4 pieces of meat (2 ribs and 2 pieces of chicken), a dinner roll, potato salad, and beans was $25. One plate with 3 pieces of meat (1 rib, 1 piece chicken, and 1 serving of brisket) was $17.50. We came during lunch time on a Tuesday. It wasn't too busy, but parking can be difficult in this area. Our food came out in a timely manner, and the customer service was great. The food was just as good as I remembered. The quality was comforting like home cooked BBQ. I had the brisket, which I thought came in such a generous portion. The brisket was cut thinly, and it was so tender. I particularly love fatty brisket, and there was plenty of it. I loved the sweet but tangy bbq sauce that the brisket was smothered in. Happy to have rekindled my love for Jon Jon's. I look forward to being back! read more

Wow! I swore I've reviewed this place before! Whoops! This place has been here forever - well over two decades now and is a great stop for lunch for a BBQ combo. I used to come here with my coworkers weekly and order the rib, brisket, and a hot link and grab a vending machine soda... This place has gone through quite a change from over a decade ago making it so much more comfortable for customers to dine at. I stopped by today for dinner and ordered brisket and ribs $24. I added 1 hot link for $6.50, they were out of baked beans so got 2 servings of potato salad. When I got home, I was totally missing my hot link :( Would have been a solid 4 star rating if it wasn't missing as I was charged for it :( read more

The setting for this old school bbq joint just can't be beat. Upon walking up to the once gas station of a building from days long gone, I was first greeted by their fenced-in bbq pit. Huge cast iron submarine looking thing. It was in full action with smoke bellowing out, with a pit master pulling slabs of ribs out...to authentic Blues music from an old boom box. Man, I don't think I had ever had an initiation to a que' joint quite as appropriate as this. So this isn't that techie new school bbq, where someone basically researched their plan and recreated it with tech money, only for hipsters to line up for hours for it. Naw this is old school tradition, passed on from generation to generation. It isn't fancy. It isn't gonna attract influencers from Instagram nor will you ever hear the words from Yelpers "best I've ever had" or "fall-off-the-bone good." But I will give them this: it is very serviceable bbq at prices, you just don't see around anymore. So scanning at their menu, it appears 90% of the plates are exactly $15. Whether its a one meat plate, two meat or even a 3 meat combo. I'm sure all the weight is the same, and in my experience there seemed at least 3/4 of a pound of meat there. Quite respectable. #9 Combo, they want you to order by number here. It'll also get sharpie'd onto your to-go container. Pretty straight forward system. ($15/4*) So this is a 3 meat combo. Ribs, Brisket and Hot link plus 2 sides, 1 potato salad and 1 baked beans. Let's roll the break down shall we. Ribs (4*) Large meaty spares. Decent smoke presence. Not super tender as it doesn't appear they use any water or steam in the smoking process. The moisture helps keeps things moist. This seemed like a dry smoking, as the exterior will have a slight jerky like sensation. But they cover all their meats in a very thin bbq sauce, so it moistens that way. Brisket (3*) Super thin slices, but quite tender. Not as much smoke flavor so it kinda just seemed like braised brisket to me. Also not seeing/tasting a bark or crust also led to that impression. But still not bad, just much milder than what I usually rave about. Hot Link (3.5*) Standard link you'll see at many old school que' joints. Hot dog in texture except much firmer. The exterior actually is quite tough as the smoking process will do that. You won't be able to cut it with a plastic fork. You'll have to either bite into it or cut it with their plastic knife. But really good red pepper heat. I like to take bites of this with a piece of brisket as to let the the 2 meld together. Baked Beans (4*) Probably a canned version but they do something to it that makes it more special. Very soft that it almost melts in your mouth. And there is the smoothest sweetness that they add, that makes it almost caramel-like. I was pretty impressed. Potato Salad (4.5*) Really good version. Very homemade tasting like this has been passed on from person to person. Slightly chunky with pickles and eggs, love that. Kiss of mustard for the send off. Collard Greens (3*) I ordered an extra side of this. A tad bitter and a tad salty to me. But still like it with a bbq meat outing, so I'd get it again. The ones I like tend to have pork chunks and sweet onion chunks. Rib Tips ($12/4*) They trim the edges of the ribs here so they are all consistent in size. The tips are little nubs with a bone or cartilage in the center and rib meat all around. There is more nibbling involved but I found the meat ratio to be quite fair. And they give you a huge mound, like over a pound. So I found awesome value in this as it fed me for couple of days. So not knock my socks off bbq, but like I said earlier, very serviceable. If ever in this industrial zone of SJ, I'd hit it again. I saw a special for braised oxtails on FB once that my friend forwarded to me. I didn't see it on my out, but will ask next time. Ordered Brisket, Polish Sausage, and BBQ Ribs dinner plates. Picking up the food: This was where the experience took a turn. They don't really use an ordering system and when my hubby went to pick up the food, it was like hey what did he order and how much? The total price quoted was for 4 dinner plates versus the 3 we ordered but my hubby was able to get the amount corrected before leaving with the food. Food: Good portions and the meat with the bbq sauce was really good but the dinner roll was the Hawaiian dinner roll you can buy at Costco and baked beans were definitely on the sweet side. No tax no tip. The chicken was really good. The rib was ok. Got a couple sticks The hot link is ok. Not really into hot sausage. Sides were potato salad and some bread I would say the chicken is really good and goes well with the sweet bbq sauce. Overall really good deal for $15.
