Had an absolutely delightful, delicious meal at Joon Bar during my recent visit to Provincetown. Several different people recommended it...and I'm doing the same.! The ambience is lovely...it feels high-end without being pretentious. Food choices provide something for everyone, including those with any kind of gluten sensitivity and other dietary restrictions. Our server was excellent and all of the food was outstanding. Personally, I thought that my salmon was one of the best pieces of cooked salmon I've ever had. (I prefer my salmon raw and tend to shy away from cooked salmon because it's usually overcooked and dry.) Others at the table had the duck sliders, the special oxtail soup, the burger and a different fish dish. Rave reviews all around. Cocktails were also well done! This place is a scallop lover's dream with a small menu, but something for everyone! We started with the simple green salad ($18) and the spring vegetable salad ($23). The green goddess dressing on the spring vegetable salad really stood out! It balanced out the sweetness of the fresh peas. I ordered the scallop and shrimp entree ($43) which came with coconut basmati rice, grilled asparagus, and a bright mango salad. I'm still thinking about the flavor on the seafood--I was practically licking the plate! My dining partner got the lamb skewer ($28) and particularly liked the side sauce it came with. We finished with the lemon tart ($13), which was like a deconstructed lemon bar. It came with a sugar cookie on the side and fresh mint. It was so good that we were scraping the bowl! We had dinner reservations at Joon for the bar at 7 PM. The food was mostly really good. The special tuna appetizer was good but the accompaniments were over salted which ended up being a theme for the evening but the actual tuna was tasty. My halibut was great. Again, over salted, but I removed most of the skin so it was fine. My friends scallops she said were salty but cooked perfectly. Cocktails were a meh. They were fine but not exceptionally well crafted. The bartender was lovely. Very helpful with suggestions. My main issue is that 55 minutes into dining, the manager or hostess at the front of the house started walking back and forth behind us telling the bartender they had three parties waiting for a spot at the bar. At exactly 60 minutes into dining, after saying we didn't want dessert but my friend was going to order a second drink, we were asked if we would move to a standing area if they would buy us her drink. If I wanted to stand, I wouldn't have made a reservation. I'd pay twice for one drink just to sit lol. I thought asking us to move because they had overbooked was gauche. We politely declined and I finished my fresh drink as quickly as I could and we left. I left a third of my drink as I felt rushed. We were in there for about 80 minutes give or take 5 minutes so it's not as if we were lingering at the bar for an unusually amount of time. I think with all the other options in ptown I likely won't return to a place where I'm rushed out of a seat in sixty minutes. read more

We ate at Joon Bar two times during our stay in Provincetown. We loved the gazpacho, which was a special one evening featuring Jicama and Tomatillos. The salmon and black bass entrees were excellent! My Joon margarita was wonderful too. We also enjoyed visiting with Audrey, the owner, who works way too hard to make your evening memorable. Decor is great and eating at the bar is a nice option. the food here is out of this world. my partner and i stopped in for an early dinner starting with the lamb kebabs and whipped feta (+ some special bevs). the two dishes played so well together - the feta was salty briny delicious, perfect atop a fried pita + the fresh tomato and cucumber salad. our entrees were the real special highlight: the duck leg confit was perhaps one of the most unique and tasty dishes we've ever had. sweet from the compote and balanced with pom molasses and the fatty, tender duck. WOW. my girlfriend could not stop talking about this days after we left & im still dreaming about it. First time coming here and it did not disappoint!. Unfortunately, came here after tea dance with a reservation, so didn't have room for another cocktail. Seated immediately upon arrival. Started with the mushroom and bacon mix with wontons for an appetizer, absolutely delicious! I could have just ordered 2 of these for my entree and been happy. They were that good! For dinner, ordered the scallops. $48 only gets you 2 scallops, but to be fair, they were some of the biggest scallops I've ever seen. The fresh herbs in the risotto really shined through. Could definitely taste the fresh mint and basil, yum! For dessert, tried a cashew rum cake with a side of mouse cream. The cake was on the denser side, bit was good. Amazing! Each dish's ingredients were fresh and vibrant. I was impressed by Joon's decor but the food wowed me. We had the fixed price menu which wasn't our intent as we stopped by for small plates at the bar. However the staff was very accommodating to give us a table late on a Sunday night without reservations. The noodle salad, lamb flatbread, shrimp and scallops, and strawberry shortcake were each noteworthy. Yet, I didn't feel overly full at the end of the meal. Well done, Joon. The most exquisite meal I had during my time in P-Town. This restaurant rivals the infamous Red Inn and should be experienced during your stay in Provincetown. We did not know they only offered a prixe fix menu for table seating, but the waiter was kind enough to let us order a la carte since there was no room at the bar for my friend and I. We started with Eric's P-Town Salad (kale, mizunna, radish, cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, garlic herb croutons, and a house made green goddess dressing). The salad was the perfect way to start our culinary experience at Joon. My friend insisted we order the duck sliders, which I was apprehensive about since I am not a fan of duck- but these turned out to be one of the best dishes I have had. The duck was cooked to perfection and almost reminded me of thin-sliced pastrami- the flavors were amazing and complimented the biscuits perfectly. Both my friend and I were blown away by how delicious, yet simple the dish was. We also shared the pan-seared scallops, which came with mashed potatoes and a truffle vinaigrette- the BEST scallops I have had to date. Having heard only about Red Inn being a must, we are so glad we discovered Joon off the beaten path. By far one of the best meals I have had this year. read more

So disappointing. The space is pleasant. The waiter seemed slightly offended, not particularly friendly, but not nasty. The food was the big issue. Fried olives didn't really work. Tasted nothing but garlic with the homemade hummus. The french fries were not crisp. The halibut was dry without a lot of flavor-- and didn't seem particularly pan roasted. The steak was OK but wasn't cooked to the temperature ordered. The baguette was a few decent slices of toasted bread for $9. We thought about dessert, but the choices wereice cream, sorbet, berries, or chocolate cake. I thought maybe the meal could redeem itself with dessert, but decided not to take the chance. read more

Not sure where to start. I walked in looking for a fine dining experience because I had a friend call out on plans. Didn't have high expectations initially for line walk in. I was wrong. The host greeted me with such local care he spent his time to ask if I bothered to look into any good breakfast spots. I was sitting at the bar, within 20 second I was served water, and given a menu. The bartender(Gabo) told me his preferences snd asked what I'd like to taste. Something you don't see at most restaurants. Especially in Provincetown. I started to see the employees actually cared to ask. I was on the fence for food, asked the bartender I'd like something filling because I didn't have the appetite for an appetizer despite the numerous suggestions to get the duck sliders, a waitress ho I heard ms name is Elina(not sur if spelled correctly) jumped in out of the blue and suggested the New York strip. I'm particularly skeptical on steak as most places over cook them. This was absolutely perfect. Nothing but cloud 9. 10 stars if I could. Not quite but it was good when combined with the savory lentils. 2. Grilled lamb with roasted eggplant: A z'atar spice lamb with savory eggplant. Solid take. 3. Duck sliders: Served on biscuits with cheddar. Not bad but slightly dry. 4. Scallop tostados: Very solid with an avocado aioli. 5. Pan-roasted halibut: Nicely roasted in a kaffir butter broth alongside vegetables and butter beans. Savory and light. Overall, it's solid food but the service gives it an extra star. I get it. Joon is trying to be an upscale restaurant in a vacation spot on the Cape. And I understand that a lot of reviews in the area seem inflated by the atmosphere of Provincetown or the friendliness of the establishments. I wasn't unhappy with my meal or overall experience at Joon, but I thought it was relatively average, all things considered. We had reservations here for a weekend evening, and if after reading this you'd still like to go, I'd recommend that you either get there early or make reservations. We ate around 8 at night and there was a wait at the bar and outside at that point. The space itself is quaint...but with those waiting, was a little crowded. It has a few high top tables in the center, some tables and booths on the periphery, and a long bar with seating to one side of the room. We were seated at a high top in the center of the restaurant, and honestly, we were a little cramped...but it wasn't anything that affected our meal too much. And the service was great--maybe the best part of the meal. Our waitress was very professional and the staff was very attentive throughout the evening. Overall, the food was extremely average and the real reason for the three-star review. Beyond that, I thought it was overpriced for the product. As an example, cocktails were in the $10-13 range, which I thought was in line with most other local places. The real issue was the prices and quality of the food--you'll notice prices aren't listed on their online menus. The flatbreads, which I'd estimate were around 4 inches x 6 inches (maybe slightly larger) were around $25. I'm not talking about lobster tail and caviar flatbread...I'm talking about a basic mushroom flatbread. We started with the Naan and lentils and the avocado gazpacho and ordered the pan roasted cod and the scallops for entrees. The food wasn't bad, but the flavors weren't as strong as I'd expect and the meal not as elegant as warranted by the price. Like I said, I wasn't unhappy with my experience at Joon, but I don't think it was worth the cost or the effort of getting a reservation. I've had more enjoyable experiences at other local restaurants and would happily return to one of those before coming back here. read more

Sadly we did not enjoy Joon this year as much as last year. There were multiple reasons that make this just a 3 star visit. Unfortunately this will be our last visit. Seating - I get the interior is small, but sitting at a 2top near the front also meant we heard and saw everyone who entered. Not very enjoyable. Food quality & taste- average overall, but lacked flavor on so many things we ordered. Figs on the flatbread, no flavor. Halibut was served skin side up & almost burnt, lacked any seasoning. The fava & butter beans were ok, but slightly overcooked. My whole roasted snapper also served with charred skin and it lacked flavor. The side of lime aioli/sauce was too strong. The only dish we enjoyed for it's flavor were the roasted mushrooms. Desserts - so simple, but lacking of effort to impress. There were 2 gelato choices, and then a berry&whipped cream dessert with a small nugget of biscuit. I can make this at home. Service - average, nothing wrong, just ok. Price - very over priced for all. We left feeling unsatisfied, and having spent a hefty amount. We get that Joon has a nice vibe, interior and wants to be considered a fancy restaurant. We came to Joon because Jimmy's had absolutely zero space, and recommended Joon instead. I must say, this place was spectacular. Also fully book, we managed to grab a table on the condition that we finish dining in an hour as the table was reserved. This wasn't an issue for us. If anything, being able to have our food served quickly, and then have more time to walk around and grab dessert somewhere before we catch the last boat back to Boston, was the perfect plan. We had the fried olives, scallops, and cod. Everything tasted amazing, and as a person who had always found fine American cuisine rather unappealing, this completely impressed me. The menu doesn't contain a million items, an important sign that typically means the restaurant concentrates and specializes at a few dishes, which is both efficient for the restaurant and in turn improves the quality of food and service for the customers. Looking at it, I imagined any item would taste awesome. We picked out the scallops and cod because these were things that we imagined a restaurant on Cape Cod would have a comparative advantage on, both in terms of freshness and cooking techniques. Fried olives were by recommendation of our server. Everything tasted spectacular, and I don't use this word generously. Even though we only had the table for an hour, we were never rushed. We ordered within 3 minutes of sitting down, food arrived in 10, and we spent 30 uninterrupted minutes enjoying the food. We were done in 45 minutes and returned out table to the host, as well as thanking her for allowing us this awesome dinner even though they were fully booked. (Note that we might have had our food served at a prioritized order -- your wait time is probably going to be longer.) We came to Provincetown for a day trip, and since there are so many other places to visit, the next time we visit here would probably be in the indefinite future. However, I will definitely come back to Joon if I am in the area again. For those who are visiting, I strongly recommend this place. Joon was awful. The hostess was a drip, no welcoming vibe at all. Waiter went through the motions, but was stressed and overworked. The tasting menu was an ill-conceived joke. The "poke" bowl was passable, though what you were supposed to do with an entire sheet of nori and a ball of rice the size of a marble was a mystery. For second course my dining partner had the deviled egg, and I had the duck confit. The disproportionate size of the two was off-putting and weird . The third course (they were out of the lamb merguez) was a nasty deep-fried tofu concoction with buffalo wing sauce. By that point, dessert and a quick exit were in order. Absolutely delicious! Best in Provincetown. And yes, I'm including Freemans, Victor's, Sal's, etc. They are all good, very good, in some cases, but there's something about Joon Bar that is special. The atmosphere is warm and intimate, but not cloying. And the food...one example: they make and serve their own ketchup. If that sounds cheesy, it isn't. I dont like ketchup and tried it upon the insistence of a friend. It was a revelation - smooth and tomatoey with a smokey finish that left me insisting on my own serving. This was possibly the best meal I've had in Provincetown since I moved here. They totally nailed it. The décor alone is worth the trip. It is absolutely beautiful (tip o' the hat to Kevin O'Shea). The cocktails are (mostly) outstanding. I tried the Clean Linen cocktail (wonderfully light and refreshing) as well as the Black Beauty (not my favorite, but then again I have pretty fruity taste), and sampled the Joon Bar Margherita (outstanding and bold). We had read about the fried olives for an appetizer and they absolutely lived up to their reputation. They were crunchy, cheesy, and a little salty at the same time. Two people in our party went with the garden salad which had a salad dressing that was so good, they could sever it as a drink. For entrées, most everyone in our party went with (and raved about) the halibut. I ordered the heirloom tomato flatbread which was f**king perfect. It wasn't too heavy, but a very generous portion size, and had a wonderful olive oil drizzled on top of it. The only thing that could have made it even better would have been perhaps a little sprinkle of goat cheese. Back at the beginning of the season I got to meet the owner and I told her I could tell immediately that she was a very intelligent business person. Fit for a Foodie This is our second time on Joon's and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We arrived at 5:30 as it's hard to get in unless you plan in advance (something we tend not to do on vacation on the cape). We ate off the small plates menu. Watermelon gazpacho, ceviche, duck sliders and bluefish. Delicious! We will be back, maybe even this summer and sit at the bar. Our bartender Lucy was friendly and gracefully efficient. My husband was a fan of the fried olives with manchego (I hate olives, so did not try them) and we both liked the fries with house smoked ketchup. Highlights included the spicy Joon Margarita (Tequila plata, Ancho Reyes, agave nectar, lime), Rainer Wess Gruner Veltliner (they have a nice selection of wines by the glass), and the striped bass, which was beautifully composed and delicious. read more

Been many times, but our recent visit was a real standout...Maybe the unhurried pace in the off-season was the bonus, from the charming hostess to the friendly and efficient service...to the exceptional food. The menu isn't expansive, but that means everything served here is well-crafted and fresh. Recently, on Wednesdays, they've added three "comfort food" specials. Our meal: --Fried Spanish Olives stuffed with aged manchego, light coating, fried but not greasy. These always disappear in a flash. --lentils with naan bread, I'd kill to know the lentil spice mix. Delicately balanced flavor scooped up with fresh naan. --Mixed Greens salad with avocado, shaved radish, and champagne vinaigrette, sounds simple, yet it was super good, just the right amount of dressing and a variety of greens. --Cream of cauliflower soup, served piping hot and another home run. --Pan Roasted Atlantic Halibut with haricoverts, roasted spaghetti squash, a lemongrass emulsion. Fish was cooked flawlessly and the flavors on the plate kept surprising... and I'd kill [again] to know what was in that spaghetti squash. --Chicken fried steak special, yummy bacon-flavored --Eggplant parm special, nothing out of the ordinary, but perfectly fried thinly sliced eggplant with provolone, served over pasta. We were looking forward to returning to Joon, a favorite pre-Covid place. We were disappointed. The price Fixe menu of 4 courses offers only 10 items total. These did not include some favorites from the old menu. We would not have minded if the food had blown us away- it may be that it suffered from making large quantities of each. We found the lobster-corn chowder salty, the ceviche lacked zip, the short ribs were fatty and the vegan quinoa bowl was bland. The best course was dessert. If the menu returns to what it was before, we'll try again but not in this configuration. read more
