He would ruffle my hair, put his hands on my back etc. every time he came by, despite my subtle but nonconfrontational tilting away from him. We had dinner at Helltown last night for the 4th, and it was our first time there. From the beginning, the experience was exceptional. A special thank you to Elia, who helped us with our reservation, accommodated a change, and even helped with a gift card. That kind of attention and care set the tone before we even arrived. It made a real difference. The hostess at the front desk was also incredibly kind and helpful, and we appreciated that right away. We were seated upstairs in a beautiful room that felt intimate and special, perfect for celebrating the holiday. The food exceeded our expectations. We started with the crab cakes and watermelon salad, both excellent. I had the chicken, Scott had the lobster, and both were outstanding. What made the night memorable wasn't just the food, though -- it was the hospitality. Had dinner with some friends and we liked our experience. Our waiter Leandro was very nice and friendly. After getting our drink order, he came back placing all the drinks next to my husband, instead of placing the drink next to the person who ordered the drink. We had to move the drinks around. The food itself was not bad, the crab and avocado salad was tasty and light......my grilled octopus app was tough and overcooked, but my Coconut Cod entree was nicely done and well prepared. I asked for black pepper right after getting my entree and I never got it. My husband's short rib mac n cheese was good but way overly salty. The experience was not bad but not excellent. read more

I don't mind going out and taking my time between courses to talk amongst ourselves, have a few drinks etc. We got some appetizers and those came 45 minutes or so later. They were OK, not much to write home about, but were acceptable. While I can't remember the exact name of the dish of the main course (coconut cod or something to that effect) I have to admit that dish was excellent. Problem was all of our dinners came after a reminder after 40 minutes or so about "where's our dinners?". Took another 10-15 minutes at least to get our main courses. I'm guessing they literally forgot to put in the order and then put in a rush for our main courses. We all finished up and had 10 minutes to rush down Commercial Street to get to a show we had tickets for. The ambiance here is kind of nice actually. We don't know what took so long as waiters didn't seem overly busy. I'll give them another try this year as like I said that coconut cod was actually very good. But I do hope we get better service. I don't mind waiting for good food like the main course was, but the waiting was way too long. No apologies from anyone, nothing. On a warm, summer evening in late June, walking arm in arm with my beloved down Commercial Street, we tucked into a magical alley that is Helltown Kitchen. Service is impeccable: the maître de, gracious. The servers, prompt and friendly. Crisp cocktails in hand, we explored a small, but seasonal and eclectic menu. We were served our appetizer and dinner salad at the same time, which was unfortunate, and though not intended, did make us feel a little rushed. The appetizer was something on special, something with pulled pork that was okay, but the massaged kale salad with burrata was hearty and fresh. I like spicy food and this was beyond that. When I told the waiter it was too spicy, he replied, "I know" and walked away...the menu described "Shrimp sautéed in a fragrant blend of fresh garlic, extra virgin olive oil and white wine, delicately seasoned with our signature house spices." Tonight's dinner was one of the best I have eaten in Provincetown. The appetizer spring rolls were superb, the short ribs over Mac and Cheese were the best Mac and Cheese I have ever eaten. I came to Helltown Kitchen with my family already knowing what I was going to order. I ordered the shrimp vindaloo and it came with rice and naan. The food was amazing. I order the vindaloo every time I stop by. We also really enjoy the outdoor seating, and the service is really quick. If you stop by Helltown Kitchen be sure to check out the interior because their wall decorations are beautiful and the wallpaper stands out. There are a lot of great options, even though I usually stick to the same thing. I've also gotten a taste of the Elote Corn. I haven't visited the restaurant a lot during my visits but every time I stop by, I love the experience. read more

We went twice in three days this year. Favorite restaurant in Provincetown; small and eclectic menu, excellent service, relaxing and elegant atmosphere and dog-friendly. A win-win-win. Look at the photos: we loved the avocado crab salad as an appetizer (I would have that one for lunch!). I tried both the lobster risotto on one night and the black rice scallop risotto on another instance - can't decide on which one I love more. My dinner partner had the steak (in a coconut sauce - superhealthy) and the seafood medley. All cooked to perfection and very recommended. Bottom line: this is our very favorite restaurant in P-town. 5 stars for food, atmosphere, service, comfort, privacy and elegance. And superb staff and owner. I suspect one of the reasons we'll be back to Ptown next year, will be to dine at Helltown. read more

We had the croquettes (crispy to perfection and flavorful) and the lobster risotto (not large enough to share, but delicious- creamy with some mushrooms and a shelled lobster.) This restaurant is a bit up its own ass. It's incredibly expensive for, like, fine food? The service was horrendous. We waited for about 20 minutes without anyone stopping at our table. Who knows how long it would've been, but I eventually waved down a server. He immediately said, "Sure, I can take your order," with no apology or acknowledgement of the wait. The food did arrive fairly promptly, but our second round of cocktails wasn't delivered until after we finished our entrees. The grilled Caesar salad was interesting, but heavy on the anchovies. The Korean wings had good spice, but weren't the meaty wings we were hoping for. The Caribbean seafood stew and the chicken vindaloo were flavorful, and I'd recommend them to anyone (although the vindaloo portion was smaller than expected, more sauce than protein). read more

I heard great things about Helltown so we decided to give it a try. We had the Camarones Al Ajillo as a starter, then Pescado Encocado and Roasted Chicken as the main entrees. In terms of presentation, all dishes looked great. The Camarones were delicious and seemingly the star of the night. The Pescado was OK...very one note and not properly proportioned to ensure a good bite every time. The chicken looked great, but the skin was very rubbery and lacked flavor. The lack of flavor was surprising because it looked well seasoned. We also had the deconstructed strawberry shortcake, which was also just ok. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. The inside dining room is small and there is no bar to sit at. Reservations are highly recommended. Nice owner + staff and good service, but overall everything was just OK. This is it: for my money, the queen of the PTown dining scene, which has been elevating itself in leaps and bounds for the past decade or so. I keep waiting for Helltown Kitchen to miss, but in the three summer I've been there, it never does. Helltown feels like a place where everyone is trying their very best. Not in a pretentious or self-satisfied way; in a scrappy underdog, let's-stick-it-to-the-juggernauts type way. It starts with warm, personable service, a maître d' who knows your name before you announce your reservation, and a friendly waiter who avoids the common PTown waiter tropes (overly bored or overly flirtatious. Seriously, I once asked an obviously straight waiter in PTown how big a meal was and he said "it's about eight inches, you can handle that right?" Gross, dude. But I digress...) The menu is refreshingly international, while taking note of the kind of things you would actually want to eat on a seaside vacation. If you're a vegetarian like I am, this place is a special treat. I can't decide between the tofu vindaloo and the Caribbean stew; I just go back and forth between the two each year. There's always a little something extra, like chocolates for the table (no desserts available) or freshly baked bread. The outdoor seating is tucked away off commercial street, intimate and yet not cramped. Cocktails are perfect, and the wine list is thoughtfully curated and reasonably priced. A dinner at Helltown, booked a month ahead of time via phone so you can actually get in at peak hours, is my happy place. If you get there at 8 pm, you sit in a garden in summer time with your special person as the sun goes down, sip your cocktail, laugh along with the waiter, and feast on the best PTown has to offer. read more

I hate to leave a bad review but I have tried to contact the restaurant multiple times and haven't heard anything back. We had a reservation for 7:30 PM on Saturday for which we were on time and were told it would be a 10 minute wait - it was a 30 minute wait and no one came to gave us updates. It was another 45 minutes before a server came around and it was 9:30PM before food came around. Additionally we had 2 allergies at the table which we raised and confirmed there would be no cross contamination for. The gluten allergy meal literally came out with bread crumbs on it. The shellfish allergy meal was told no cross contamination to have that backtracked and the substitute broccoli came out cold and was returned microwaved after it was pointed out. This was an expensive dinner and frankly for the service not even remotely worth the price - the food was fine but hard to enjoy with everything else happening. I'm honestly very disappointed by this entire experience. read more

Our waiter and one of the cooks that brought our food out were nice and friendly though. The food was overpriced and not the greatest. The crab avocado was more like crab salad and it had red onions, which we weren't a fan of. I ordered the Caribbean Seafood Stew, which was a good curry. The portion was a little small. My fiancée ordered the Helltown Famous Lobster Risotto and it was disappointing. The serving size was pretty small and the lobster on top looked like half a chick. I spent way too much time researching where I wanted to go out to eat on our 4 day Cape Cod trip. This was my favorite meal by far. I called the day of and felt lucky to score a 6pm reservation because there was a cancellation. Full disclosure: we are vegetarian. I LOVED that Helltown Kitchen had TWO creative and tempting entrees and multiple appetizers for us to choose from. Thank you! We had the asparagus (perfectly cooked with really yummy soft figs, feta, and pumpkin seeds), burrata kale salad (we didn't want another balsamic flavored dish so the server offered us a truffle dressing which was made with beet and I adored this dressing). Now the star of the show was the Caribbean stew with tofu (but can also be made with seafood). This meal was everything. A heavenly coconut broth that was both a little sweet and savory. Definitely wouldn't describe it as spicy. I loved every bite. Warm, comforting, nutritious. I will be back for this. My only critique is that I wish the potatoes were cooked a tiny bit longer. We had the strawberry shortcake for dessert which was good not great. The balsamic made another appearance. I've already recommended this place twice and it's been a day. read more

If you are a foodie and like an eclectic and imaginative menu, this is your place. If you are more a meat and potato's kinda person, I would go somewhere else. I had the Caribbean seafood stew, and it was nothing short of amazing and beautifully seasoned. My friends had Indian Vindaloo, and they loved it. Someone else had the avocado stuffed with crabmeat as an appetizer, but it was big enough to be the entree and it was delish. We shared two desserts. We started with the Elote Corn, which was delicious although a bit expensive for what it is and how much you get. My wife had the lobster risotto and I had the Tartufata scallops. Fan-friggin-taaaaasstic dinner last night!!! We arrived a bit after 6 (maybe 6:30?...not sure...) and we were the only guests there....for the entire meal. People....you're missing out! I mean, it was rather nice to have the whole patio to ourselves and enjoy wonderful conversations with Todd....plus it was a Tuesday night during the sleepy start of women's week....'cause the food here is fabulous and for this quality there should always be a line to get in. Anyway, we started with a couple of delicious cocktails...one was a version of a mule and one had spicy tequila. They brought out olive tapenade with crunchy pita chips to start us off. We ordered the appetizer of crab and avocado-served cold in a slightly creamy herb-laden sauce. Wonderful flavors! My main meal was the Jamaican seafood (green) curry. I love a good curry and was told that this was less spicy and more sweet-which is different than what I usually go for in a curry. (I like food that makes my face hurt). But this was definitely one of the best curries I've had..and the seafood was all cooked perfectly. The side of rice was available to sop up all of the remaining sauce. I loved this dish. The other main course was from the menu...I tasted it and I loved that, too. Sorry-I can't recall the name of the dish but it seems that's there are no bad choices here. Dessert was a shared piece of Mexican cheesecake. After my first bite I said, "that doesn't suck at all". Delicious, creamy and slightly crunchy from the thin layer of pastry on top. Coffee was great-we decided to throw brandy in one and amaretto in the other. Whipped cream? Of course. So glad we tried Helltown Kitchen. We were told that the menu is limited but that everything is good. There were several specials to expand on the regular choices, so I found the balance to be right on target. Eat here.
