Jose Pepper's has the best service of any restaurant I've ever been to. I come here with my boyfriend all the time and we've never had a problem. Their chips and salsa are the best I've had anywhere and their espinaca is delicious! My favorite dishes are the mahi mahi fish tacos and the chicken and avocado enchiladas. Tonight I got their famous pollo magnifico which wasn't my favorite. I knocked off a star because I'm not a huge fan of their burritos, which is disappointing being a mexican restaurant. Not only were my two tacos not prepared the way that I had asked, but each one was prepared wrong in their own unique way. I have always loved the food at Jose Peppers and tend to visit with family when we visit KC. On the last two visits to the Shawnee location, the restaurant has been incredibly DIRTY! On both occasions (once in April and again on Father's Day afternoon), we were seated by the hostess at booths that were literally covered with food on the seats and neither hostess offered to clean up the mess on the seats or under the table. Instead, they just stand there rudely as we try to wipe off the mess so that we're not sitting in a gross mess left from the previous diners. On the most recent visit at 2pm on Father's Day, not only were both sides of the seats a mess, but the edge of the table had crusted food on it. This place is in serious need of a deep cleaning. While I love the food, I can't help but wonder if their kitchen is as dirty so I am very hesitant to visit again. I hope they see this message and begin to take more care in cleaning up their restaurant on a regular basis. There's no excuse for a place being filthy dirty, especially at 2pm. read more

It was an okay meal. I liked the warm tortilla chips and salsa. The hot salsa had a good kick to it. Service was fine and there were plenty of selections on the menu. I went for the carnitas tacos. It was cooked well, but rather watery. When I tilted my taco take a bite, a steady stream of liquid started to flow. I waited for it to fully drain and took my first bite. The meat tasted fine but rather bland. I tried to jazz it up with the green sauce on the plate, but that seemed bland as well. The refried beans were fine, but I really liked the cilantro rice. Portion sizes were comparable to the price paid. I think I'll opt for something else on the menu next time though and maybe sample a libation from the bar. read more

The service here was not good, they sent one of six plates to the wrong table. When the waiter was confronted about it no apology was given and he rolled his eyes at us. I had to rush out for a movie and had to get the manager over to receive and pay the check. After rushing out I left a hat in the booth, came back right after my movie and the hat was stolen. Good food bad location, go to another location. Used to love coming to this location because the service was a well oiled machine. Within the last 6 months service has gone down the drain. Waited 15 minutes before the server coming to greet us, had to request chips and salsa, got my order wrong, plate came out burning hot with the food scotched on it because it was sitting under the heating lamps too long. The waiter completely disappeared after our food finally came out. The manager walked by us at least 10 times and NEVER asked how we were doing. I don't normally frequent non hole-in-the-wall Mexican but we ended up at the one in Overland Park randomly, and carried over to this one. The Espinaca queso is AMAZING. That is my sole purpose for writing the review, to encourage you to order it if you go. We went on a very busy day so I will give them credit for that. The person that seated us put us at a disgustingly dirty table. We were seated in the back corner so we should have known we would get bad service. Our waiter acted mildly annoyed when we asked him to clean off the table. He also gave us the menus and immediately told us we should order right then or it was going to be a long wait for our food. Personally, My fiancé and I don't go out to eat a lot so when I do go, I hate to be rushed in and out. I also had to listen to our waiter argue with two other staff members which was really unprofessional. Food was great! My only complaint was the service but, like I said, they were busy. Love Jose Peppers... Just won't be going back to this location. You're better off going to Legends or Mission. read more

Excellent food, the fresh chips at lunch were warm, lightly salted, thin and light with a great side sauce. I started with jalapeño popper, stuffed and they were good and large, spicy. I ordered one of their plates with beans and rice, way too much food and ended up leaving most of the burrito. I didn't care for their shredded beef as much as their ground beef, but all was tasty, service good, price reasonable. read more

Margaritas are always awesome. Never weak! The espinaca is great, better than anyone around this side of the city. Can't go wrong with mahi tacos, cheese crisp salad, shrimp quesadilla, or shrimp tacos. Food is always fresh, which is one of the main reasons I come here. No bagged lettuce, or cheap shrimp for me. Last night was the first time my husband & I ordered take-out from this location. Normally we went to the new one on Johnson Drive, near our old neighborhood, but we recently moved to Lenexa, so this location was closer. Based on our experience, we won't be going back to this location. The Espinaca dip was watery & bland. The food was sub par & when I entered the establishment to pick-up our food, it had a dirty musty smell. Also, both our stomachs were upset after the meal. When we eat at Jose Peppers again it will be at the Johnson Drive location. read more

This is my favorite place to eat that is local to my home, and really it's just my favorite place to eat. May I recommend the stuffed Jalapeno peppers, they are stuffed with chicken and wrapped in cheese then battered and fried...OMG best thing ever if you can stand spicy food and I don't mean a little spicy, and the sauce that goes with it, I could probably drink the stuff it is so good. My husband always gets the Polo Loco I think that's what it's called, It's a flour tortilla with chicken and it's smothered in a cream cheese sauce, it's delicious to say the least. Everything I have gotten here I have never been disappointed, the queso dip, the mini chimmis the margaritas, you really can't go wrong. And the chips and salsa is the best I have had in a restaurant, just saying :) Everything is yummy, but I make it a point to order the stuffed Jalapeno peppers every time. read more
