Jose Pepper's is a local chain restaurant with a good amount of restaurants in the Kansas City area. Truthfully the food isn't the best, all though I love the Espinaca dip, but the restaurant and the service itself are pretty good. This location is in a strip mall with plenty of parking spots. The inside was clean and well laid out. The tables were spaced well enough apart that all though there was a party of seven behind us we really didn't hear their conversation. The aisles were also wide enough for two people to pass through without having to worry about sidestepping into somebody's table. Our server was a prompt and attentive gentleman who took good care of us. In closing, Jose Pepper's probably won't make your palate go crazy, but is a perfect place it sit and enjoy a meal over good conversation. read more

Update: I called the manager and he gave us a partial refund. He told us they had given our order to another customer on accident which is why we didn't have our food. I am bumping up stars for the manager. Quite possibly the worst Jose peppers experience I've had. We called in a curbside order, they told us to pick it up in 20 minutes. We arrived a little after 20 minutes. After 15 minutes of waiting they let us know they forgot to make our order. We had to wait another 20 minutes for our food to come out. When we received our bag they had given us salsa and espinaca with NO chips. We never left, immediately called them and asked them if they could bring us out a bag of chips and they told us NO. They couldn't not give us chips because they had already closed down their kitchen. (We finally received our order 7 minutes after closing time). We ended up having to go to Walmart and buying ourselves a bag of chips. We reminded them when they gave us the bag that we needed two things of Mexican rice and they didn't give us any. The espinaca they gave us wasn't even half way filled. It was not our fault you forgot our order and didn't want to make any last minute meals. A complete rip off. I will be calling tomorrow asking for a refund. The one star goes to the girl who answered the phone and took our order. She was very nice and very efficient. read more

Tried to eat here on 12/30/2018. They attempted seating our party of 7 in a booth that clearly would be too small. Was told it was all they had available, though I noted there were open tables in the back, and according to the hostess there were no reservations. We were not offered a wait time or alternatives. We left and will not return. I've left this feedback with the store manager and on the corporate website. I have not heard back from either. As with all places a review, I try them twice to see if it was real or just a fluke. It wasn't a fluke, there are good and ok parts. Good- I ordered the special Crab and Shrimp enchilada. The guacamole cream sauce was very good, and flavorful. I wished there was a little more Crab and shrimp, which I considered being really light quantity. What meat that was there was flavorful and cooked just right. I order the same dish on each visit, and there were minor differences, one time some corn mush, other none, red hot sauce once, and not so hot the next time. The 'OK', the famous Guacamole, both times there was very little seasoning to it. I added a lot of salt and the taste came out. A concern was the 'chunkiness', as they advertise they use 'The thinness chips', which translate, they can't hold anything, including the weight of anything else. The chunkiness was an issue. as it is a little hard to get any on the chips to start with, but when they don't really mix or chop up very well (pieces size of half an cut avocado). They also don't mix it well, with the adding of salt and chopping and mixing it up made it much better. I would eat here again but might skip the guacamole. read more

When I'm craving Kansas City "tex-mex" or "southwest-mex" or whatever you want to call this brand of food...Jose Pepper's is right at the top of the list for me along with Margarita's. The Espinaca is a must to start out with. Creamy, cheesy dip with hot tortilla chips. Is there anything more delicious? It's so good, you can buy it most local grocery stores. Someday, I'm sure they'll just go ahead and sell it by IV drip. One of the things I really love about this place is they give each person their own salsa bowl and they keep them full. No worrying about cousin Bubba double dipping in your salsa! My favorite entre is the Spinada Enchilada. Two flour tortillas filled with spinach and cheese topped with a white cream sauce. Not the healthiest thing in the world, but tasty all the same. You definitely don't go to a Kansas City mexican joint to eat healthy. Just sayin'. Refried beans, rice and a tasty little ball of some kind of sweet cornbread concoction round out the plate. This is definitely a family restaurant. Lots of booths and table. There's never much of a wait unless it's Friday or Saturday night. The bar isn't that large, but again...family type place. They DO have TVs around the bar, though, for all those KU/KState/MU basketball games the locals like to watch. All in all, it's on par with other restaurants like it around the city. Smothered and covered in cheese and sauce is the Kansas City way and Jose Pepper's does it as well as everyone else. read more

If you want some freakin good Tex Mex food go to Jose Pepper's. All the quesos they have are so yummy they should be illegal and if you order an entree the queso is just $0.99. I love the jalapeno cream sauce they put on some of the enchiladas they serve there. People talk about Agave's jalapeno cream sauce but there is honestly no comparison. They also have a few vegetarian options. The vibe is pretty good right when you walk in the door and it is always busy with people. If you are out and your favorite sport game is on no problem because the place is plastered with flat screens, which I appreciate during college football season. The price is pretty reasonable and they have daily specials and every table has a bottle of hand sanitizer on it. I think that is pretty cool...but hey I might be weird. This particular visit left us feeling that something is slipping within the managment. the staffers are all really young and inexperienced, there are things you just don't say like "you like that? I guess that it's a acquired taste or something" As if I was eating pig nuts or something...! Our last two visits have almost shuddered us away from this location, not happy since it's close to our house, would rather drive to another location at this point! My husband, myself and my kids went in for dinner last night. Worst service we have ever had. The sever was rude! In the middle of giving my order I was told to "Hold on a minute" in a rude manner. We had to ask for chips after sitting empty for 10 minutes. My children sat with drinks empty until he was ready to bring us our check. And I dont know if he could get us out of there fast enough. All the while...his friends at the table behind us were given excellent service....including a free desert. We have never experinced such rudness. This was one of the first Mexican places I tried in KC. After asking my dad where to get a decent burrito, he brought me here. My dad and I see food very differently so I knew not to expect what I wanted. Yep, American Mexican food. Burrito's covered in sauce (a phenomenon I just don't understand). But, they do bring you an endless bowl of decent chips and salsa, and the food (not covered in sauce) is alright. Nothing will really make you say wow, but it also won't make you leave hungry. I'm not sure if that's a great review, but the truth is interesting. Oh, they also bring you hand sanitizer after you sit down. It made us both feel a little queasy, but the staff says customers love it. My wife enjoys eating here, but I'm not a huge fan of this KC Mexican franchise. This place is your standard, White America Mexican restaurant. The decoration is tacky. The seating is a lot of uncomfortable booths. There is a bar in the back right corner, but I can't remember if you can actually sit there or not. The place does have a rather large patio on the side, but I've never had the delight of sitting out there. Most of the staff is not Mexican, which is usually a bad sign when eating at a Mexican restaurant. The chips and salsa are normal, and the food isn't bad if you like things slathered with cheese sauce and the like. I generally always go with the over-sized burritos. It's really hard to eff up conveyor belt food like this...menu item, refried beans, rice, pinch of lettuce and tomato, and a scoop of the sweet corn stuff...repeat. I know none of their stuff would pass the authenticity test, but plenty of it scores high on my delicious meter! Went here for dinner on a Monday night. They were steady with customers when we went which was good to see. Our hostess was friendly and sat us quickly. Our server was friendly and was sure to fill our salsa quickly after seeing the dish get eaten so quickly. Our food came out hot and in a timely manner. Used to enjoy this place, but it's really gone down hill. The food is less flavorful than a Taco Bell, and 95% over micro-wanted rice. The salsa tastes like the cheapest white-label, store-bought garbage you could find, and the chips are paper thin and oily. Absolutely NOTHING in our party's order was deemed 'good', and everyone commented on the barely warm food. The wait staff was adequate - though not unlike what you'd expect of a service counter attendant at McDonald's. Had a conversation with the owner Bill, great guy and talked not only about the restaurant but about the surrounding community as well. Food was excellent with good portions at a good price. The layout is a little strange for a Mexican Restaurant IMO, but I can overlook that because the food tastes good and the chips are always fresh and the hot salsa is actually hot! I like to go during their Happy Hour and try some of those menu items, but some of my favorite things are from the main menu, like the enchiladas, muchaca tacos and fajitas. We visit the Belton store at least twice a month, it's better than the rest but still has dropped way off. Went to the Shawnee store last week, extremely dirty and the food was terrible. There are things in this world I cannot understand. No matter how hard I try, they just don't make a lick of sense. The popularity of Jose Pepper's multiple locations is one of those things. There's nothing WRONG with JP's. It's not like I experienced bad service there or found a severed thumb in a burrito. There's nothing specific to dislike. It's just... Well, it's boring. The food is dull. I've been there a few times (once by choice and on other occasions due to functions being scheduled there) and have never had anything that jumped out at me. Nothing repulsive. Nothing tasty. It's just there. It's truly generic Mexican food. Yet people seem to love it. And I don't understand... There are so many awesome Mexican places. Why settle for forgettable? I honestly am not a huge menu hopper - I only get the same one or two things every time I go, but I would highly suggest the Monterrey Chicken Burrito! Their refried beans, rice, and of course the burrito itself is all delicious. They also have quite good salsa and chips. The prices are a little bit high compared to other mexican places I've enjoyed, but it's mostly good. It is nice that Jose Pepper's now has added an e-rewards program, but I really wish it wasn't Belly. I feel like the way Belly was implemented is so backwards compared to other apps like FrontFlip - and FrontFlip is based in (and popular around) Kansas City. I'm not removing a star for it because hey, free stuff if I decide to use it, but it is so backwards and I haven't seen anyone else with it. I was pleasantly surprised by Jose Peppers. I LOVE Mexican and Tex-Mex food but I tend to avoid chain restaurants. I went into this expecting the worst, and I was wrong. It was indeed A-Ok Our server was prompt and attentive. No problems there. The chips were ok, a bit over salted for me. The salsa was also just ok. Standard stuff here, nothing special but not bad either. The cheese dip was pretty good. Trophy Husband and I split the Fajita Trio, it comes with bacon-wrapped shrimp, steak and chicken. The chicken and steak were FANTASTIC, the shrimp were just ok. I was disappointed to find that the guac is either straight out of a package or loaded up with so many preservatives it will be around for decades. While they are generous with the onions, the peppers are limited to 3 rings. So, the lessons here are: Order chicken or steak, request extra peppers, skip the guac, and ask for chips without salt. I'm not going to make a special trip to come dine here but on a post-volleyball Friday night, it's convenient and the price is right. I'm sure we'll be back. read more

Really not a fan of this place anymore. We ordered a house margarita on the rocks and honestly it tasted like 'Brisk Lemonade'. It was not good at all. I only took a few sips before I decided I just could not drink anymore. We also ordered some of the mini chimichangas during happy hour which were decent for $4.00. This is a go to for us in our house hold when we are looking for a little Tex-Mex. They have some of my favorite Chips and Salsa. (They have thin Chips) The salsa is very mild and sometimes goes down a little to easy. Overall I really haven't had anything I don' t like there. The fish tacos are always a good one for me to pick. Service has always been pretty good there. They actually have two of my favorite servers there. Both very nice and attentive. Old and outdated restaurant. Came here on a snowy Sunday with my husband. Wasn't happy with the entire experience. I don't know if this location has ever been updated. The decor and furniture is all old. Cups and plates are old and worn down. My iced tea glass came with someone's old lip stick on the rim, sent it back. Food was below average but edible. Hot salsa tasted really weird. I had shrimp tacos and a side salad. The salad was definitely an old wilted bag mix. My husband had chicken fajitas, we've never seen so many cooked onions on a fajita plate before. Don't recommend and won't be back. read more

Got my dinner as takeout. A party of 12 met before a movie. Had 1 1/2 hours to eat. Eight people got their food. We asked the manager about the other 4 meals. He said he would check on it and disappeared. Three meals came out sporadically but mine never came. We asked the waitress and she reordered my meal. I told her to put it in a box. The manager never showed his face again. This is not the first time this has happened at this restaurant. I will never come back. The manager should be fired. read more

Long time customer here, I just want to say since we are in a pandemic I would think all restaurants would take extra care about cleaning tables. I made the decision to go inside thinking it would be alright. I felt unsafe mainly because of the cleanliness. The table I was assigned at had food crumbs all over it. I am pretty certain restaurants have strict policies they have to follow and I don't think this one is following it for people that want to dine inside. I've done curbside here and every time the food I ordered was really good regardless of this. I just hope that they take this more serious and clean better for anyone that wants to dine inside.
