We enjoyed a mix of items from the brunch and regular menu; the space was very cool but a little crowded. This was our final stop on our way home, and it's a good thing it was! I signed up me and my boyfriend for the 1 hour distillery tour ($13 per person with 11 samples). The tour of the distillery and the information was cool! After seeing the distillery operations and hearing the information about the making of their spirits, we went to a small room that was designated for tasting and we got more explanation about their products and got to sample a little of everything. Here's the problem... All of the spirits we tried were 90 - 100 proof. And you got 11 samples which were about half a shot each. By the end of the 11 samples, you've basically had about 6 - 7 shots of liquor. Considering I was driving, I took the tiniest sips of my samples and then gave the rest to my boyfriend. I don't want to waste the samples, but he ended up probably having 8 - 10 shots of liquor. Yowza! The one product I really liked was the Snaggle Tooth Coffee Liqueur. It's very sweet...like when you drink coffee and pour a ton of sugar in it and you get that coffee soaked sugary goop at the bottom. Honestly, I can't really drink straight-up vodka or whiskey or gin. It's all tastes like I'm drinking hand sanitizer or a liquified Christmas tree. I need liquor mixed with other ingredients. After the sampling, the tour was over and we went to the bar area and got some much-needed cheesy garlic bread and a big pretzel. I feel like we both needed some rest and sustenance after all those samples (him more than I). After some snacks, we played mini golf outside. They have a really cool course here. It's like playing real golf. No windmills to hit your ball through. No wooden beams forming a defined boundary for each hole. Just greens and wavy contours. Supposedly, the mini golf course here is inspired by St. Andrews in England. It was a lot of fun...even if some of us were slightly sloshed a bit. Hehe! read more

Satisfied customer multiple times! Whatever screening method is used to hire staff should be bottled. Amazing service, perfect timing and approach. Friendly enough, without interrupting. The drinks are all amazing, and not being a whiskey person I appreciate the options. And the food...just right starting with the soft pretzels, the salads, dessert - all of it. Then why 4 stars and not 5? Because the servings are oversized, and we are on a mission to rightsize portions, to not have doggie bags, to not waste food, and to not be tempted with too much for our own good. I like restaurants with character, and Journeyman Distillery is one with a lot of character! They repurposed a building for making stays, so you get all the old structure, all the neat floors that countless workers trod upon. It's just really nice. Now for the important stuff - the FOOD! After trying a few of their drinks (and buying later a bottle of their Pit Spitter Whiskey), we ordered dinner. One of our party tried their Journeyman Pizza, and it was both tasty and big enough that she had leftovers. My wife and I split a Humdinger Caesar Salad, which was good and included anchovies (folks, it isn't a Caesar with out them!) Two of us had their Angus Cheeseburgers, and one had a Steak Grinder. The sandwiches were messy and delicious. We really enjoyed dinner here. Service was pretty good. Social distancing and masks by the staff were greatly appreciated. read more

Where to start? With the tour of course. Sign up for the tour and you get to see where and how they make the magic happen, including the background story. Not only that, but you get to taste the stuff as it comes out the distillery, before it is aged in barrels. Woah... After the tour, you get to enter a 'secret' room where the tasting starts. Be prepared... bring a designated driver... I did and so I was able to be the designated drunk this time around. We actually got to taste every single product they make... I believe there were 16 of them, but I lost the ability to count after sampling the first half of products. (In my defense, I had already had some of their cocktails before the tour) Needless to say, stopping by the store after partaking in the tasting is NOT a good idea. Perhaps the most notable of Michigan's 50+ distilleries, if you go by my Michael Jackson (the beer and whisky MJ) book on the topic. We've been to their bar/restaurant "Staymaker" on two previous visits, so this time took the plunge on a distillery tour, followed by 11 tastes. Compared to 15+ similar tours elsewhere, the tour itself was a little loud throughout, maybe not so good for educating the touring public, but a sign of a busy, productive place. Covid-19 precautions: masks were worn, and social distancing encouraged. If you're pressed for time, and wondering, "What do I try?" here are the John H. picks. *At the Staymaker restaurant/bar, try the "Blood Pressure" cocktail, smoked feather bone bourbon (a mystery, since the tour guy says you can't buy anything smoked there, at least not now) allspice dram simple syrup, house bitters, and -- delicious! -- a big blood-orange ice cube, which seems to change the flavor of the drink as it melts. *John H. also thinks the Ryes are at the top of the chart here, "Last Feather," which has a kind of banana-caramel quality, and the "Field Rye," some kind of fundraiser for the Field Museum, with a little more of a fig quality (great for Manhattans, we were told). *I also very much liked the Bilberry Black Hearts Gin, which edged out the Field Gin. Therese H. also liked the Featherbone bourbon, which would get a bronze medal from me. While the distillery tour is certainly worthwhile, don't miss out on a meal at the Staymaker! This is a great place to stop in and try a few whiskeys and get a bite to eat. My wife was not drinking tonight so she got a piece of the peanut butter pie. She was in love with that piece of pie, that might have been the most she has enjoyed a dessert in the 8 years we have been together. There are also great whiskeys to choose from. Whether you like a sweet bourbon or a spicy rye then have it all. I love ryes, so I really enjoyed those options they had, but I was blown away by Silver Cross. It was just the perfect balance of spicy and sweet and malty. I grabbed a bottle of Silver Cross on the way out and am still enjoying the heck out of it. *This review is for the alcohol and golf only, as we did not try any food.* This was one of the many vacation spots we hit while in the area. The building is massive and very beautiful. The golf outback is a great idea and very challenging, and I was impressed by the condition of the large green. $9 per person wasn't too bad of a price for 18 holes, and you get to keep your golf ball with the Journeyman logo on it (I was pleasantly surprised to see that they were Pro VIs, which any golfer will tell you is a great ball). 5 stars for the golf. The drinks we had were pretty good, but I would've preferred to have a bit more alcohol in them given the prices (at least the ones we tried). I know signature cocktails tend to be more expensive, but your tab racks up pretty quickly if you're having multiple, so just plan ahead. There is a good variety of drinks to choose from though to meet different tastes (whiskey, rum, gin, etc). 4 stars for the alcohol. read more

A short visit, but very impressed. We popped in for an after dinner drink, pre-concert drink on a recent Saturday evening. I love old factories that have been repurposed and the Journeyman Distillery was amazing. The tasting area has a U-shaped bar and seating around it, plus a gift shop area where you can purchase t-shirts and bottles of their spirits. There is also an event area upstairs (a wedding reception was going on while we were there) and a restaurant. I love a good Manhattan and the Barrel Aged Manhattan hit the spot. It is made with Featherbone organic bourbon and sweet vermouth luxardo cherry syrup. D loves ice cream drinks and he zeroed in on the Bourbon Vanilla Adult Malted Milkshake, which was very good. We were only there for about 30 minutes, but so glad we stopped in. This is definitely a place we will be visiting again when we have more time for tasting. read more

Still really confused about the "experience" we had at Journeyman (??) recently. Apparently there is a distillery portion, and a restaurant portion that are two different entities? Unclear. At any rate, my wife really wanted to go to Journeyman to sample some spirits and eat dinner as part of our getaway anniversary weekend. When we arrived, parking was a mess as it seemed fairly busy. We walked in to what appeared to be the distillery - there wasn't really any signage upon entering ("See host to be seated" etc). We browsed around their to-go spirits, etc and when it appeared that nobody would be coming to seat us my wife suggested we seat ourselves at one of the several open tables. Shortly afterwards the bartender came over and said that if we wanted table service we had to see the host. Ok - wasn't aware that there was a host in the other room/other business (Staymaker???), so I walked over to the host and asked to be seated at one of the many open tables. He told us there was a one hour wait. Again, there were several available tables. That was the end of our Journeyman experience. We drove ten minutes away and enjoyed dinner/drinks at another local brewery, and were probably finished with our meals before we would have been seated JD (?). read more

This is a nice field trip for us Chicagoans. The space is really cool and has all the 21st century hallmarks of a whiskey distillery (exposed beams, brick, Edison bulbs, and many guys with beards, tats, and the occasional glasses). We did the tour which included 11 tastings (TBH I spit most of it out 'cuz I would've been lit AF if I imbibed all the sample pours). Our guide was very informative, light-hearted, and upbeat. We stayed for lunch and I enjoyed one of their rum-based slushes. Sweet with a punch. Food was tasty and solid (cheese curds, pretzel, veggie panin). Thank you for making it right. _____________________________ In Michigan for the weekend; myself, husband and two other couples (6ppl) have been looking forward to our tasting at Journeyman. After checking in at the host stand we decided to go to the bar and wait, as we were 30 minutes early. On the way to the bar we noticed a long communal table with ample space for our group. So instead of making an assumption on its availability I went back to the host area to inquire. Vanessa the host said "No, this particular table had reservation and that we would have to go to the "bottom" of her 35 Minute long wait list." I looked around there were serval available tables and no one waiting. So I asked "what time is your next reservation, we will have a quick drink and head to the tour?" She insisted the wait was 35 minutes, which I found interesting because we only needed 30. She was rude and matter of fact which made me feel unwelcomed and that this was about more than a table. I was so tuned that I finally I said forget it and went to join my friends. Our husbands who had sitting at the table were moved and replaced by menus and silverware roll ups. At 6:45pm when it was time for our tour, the table which had a 35 minute wait, laid empty of people but plenty of menus. And at 7pm when I went to the bathroom during the tour, it was still empty. That table which had a reservation set empty for an hour. We are in a time we're flexibility and customer service is imperative. You never know who you're serving, residual business they may bring or their reach. This was the first day of our long awaited couples weekend. We were excited and hopefully! It was so disappointing to be met with staff whom made us feel unwelcome. It's hard to understand why we would have been treated this way. We would hate to assume it's because of our being minorities or other reasons for what felt like biased treatment. read more

They host a lot of private events so the place is usually packed for the night. On the plus side if the wedding has a live band playing we get to also enjoy the music from their party room. There were two separate wedding receptions taking place on the floor above us, so between the music from both events and the speakers blaring through the restaurant, it was way, way too much stimulation. We were here with dozens of friends for a wedding. This is a wonderful venue for this. In January in Michigan we thought? It was awesome. The staff were all very friendly and very continuous. Obviously well trained and dedicated. The dinners, bar service, treats and later, pizza were all great. No complaints. Decent portions too. This venue is unique, we all agreed. It's a great place to have that special occasion. Their in house liquors are wonderful. Everyone agreed. I've lived in Michigan for half a century. First time in this area. It's wonderful. Before going, realize this isn't a distillery where you can taste and learn about their products. This is a restaurant (a very busy one!) attached to a distillery. We probably won't return simply because absolutely every employee was rude. Granted, it was busy, but the host told us to go to the bar, then the bartender got nasty because we were standing where servers pick up only because we wanted to ask where we were supposed to go since there were no seats. At the bar in the distillery end where there were all open seats, that person told us to go back to the host who told us to go to the bar. We gave up. There's a new place in Harbor Country. Journeyman does not sell wine or beer only spirits. They have the distillery at the restaurant which is cool because you can take a tour and do some tastings. The tasting I did was the food. They serve regular bar type food with a really creative twist. Many of the selections had whiskey or bourbon added. I had a great fall salad with squash and kale. My husband had a bison burger with grilled onions. They even make their own fries with a bourbon infused catsup on the side. The atmosphere is the real trendy industrial style. If you like that style They even have a hall where you can have your wedding reception on site. We look forward to coming back for the tour. read more

Journeyman Distillery is the kind of place where you walk out and say, "I can't wait to introduce my friends to this." I showed up on a Sunday afternoon to sample some drinks with my girl. Contrary to some other Yelpers, I thought the bartenders were super chill and relaxed. Not an ounce of pretension. The prices seemed fair, too. I started with the whiskey flight, which was only $4. It was fun to compare each variety. The flight comes with a laminated sheet, explaining how each whiskey was made and the kinds of things to notice. (Silver Cross was my favorite of the five.) My lady said she really enjoyed her espresso martini. I finished my visit with a frozen Moscow mule. Pretty much the perfect summer drink. While we were there, a cool live band called Pushing Chain entertained us with some really solid tunes. I found the place more cavernous than many Yelp photos suggested. There is a smaller-seeming front bar area, but that connects to a very big main room. We didn't take a tour, but it's nice that such things are offered. So many of the drinks looked amazing. Absolutely love this place. My girlfriend and I took a tour during the pandemic and we have a blast. They don't have rickhouses, so everything is stored on site. Definitely a bit peculiar for a distillery, but they certainly know how to maximum the space that they have as it sits under their restaurant. The tour guide gave us pours right out of the barrel using a tool called a Whiskey Thief. What's not to love about getting to try the stuff straight from the source? read more
