My experience at Joy Barber and Salon was a pretty good one. The moment I walked into the shop, I was greeted by both ladies there and they got me to a seat right away (note that the shop only had one other customer there). While waiting for the lady to grab her supplies, I looked around the shop to notice that everything was pretty clean, neat, and organized. It was good to see that they do have standards for such a small shop. The woman who cut my hair asked me how I wanted and did exactly just that. She was also careful too since she noticed I had some minor scars and cuts on my head. They were also very friendly when other customers walked in - talking to everyone, joking, and overall just friendly and professional. Since the quality of the haircut was pretty good for the price, I think I have found my regular spot. read more

I'm so glad I found this shop through Yelp! I got my haircut today and couldn't be happier. Helen is the owner and she was very friendly. There was another lady working there too and she was also friendly. We had a nice conversation while she cut my hair - and she is a great listener. I got the best haircut I've had in a long time. I decided to take my son later the same day. Helen was great with kids too! My shy son felt comfortable talking to her so he actually did good. His hair looks great now! I realize it's just hair which will grow back, but I feel robbed of my own decision to cut it so short. Came back to try it again here after 2 years. Haircut lasted 5 minutes top. Didn't felt welcome. Rushed as if she was going somewhere. She was aggressive on my head, leaving a cut on the back of my head after. When she was done, she just held a mirror and didn't even show everything. I asked how much after, she said $10. She charged the previous person $8. Seriously? I got home and the haircut is not even on both sides. Not coming back here anymore. It was great the first time. read more

Went in yesterday and was pretty disappointed. I've been coming pretty consistently for the last two years and she has some days where she puts in effort and gives an alright haircut but then there are days like yesterday where she doesn't seem to care. I can rarely tell the quality of my haircuts. But my wife can, and she was fairly pleased with this one. It's probably the cheapest haircut that I've received in this country. $7 for a men's haircut. I found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try because it of the reviews and because it was cheap. I have gotten other haircuts in the same price range and they all turned out decently, but this haircut was the worst haircut I've gotten in my life, so much so that I decided to leave a review (I have a high tolerance for bad service, food, etc. so I usually don't leave reviews, but this one was THAT bad). She started out by asking what I wanted, I told her exactly what I wanted even pointing to my hair as I described it. The first indication that this wasn't going to go well was that it didn't seem like she understood at all what I said, nor could she speak English in a way that I could understand (mind you, I'm Asian and I've grown up around non-native speakers and I can generally communicate well with them). She then proceeded to tell me that she didn't have an idea on how to cut my hair because it was colored (my hair is naturally black, but it's colored platinum blonde). How does the color of my hair affect your ability to cut hair??? But I trusted that my explanation was enough to inform her what to do. She proceeded with the haircut and the entire time she had my back to the mirror so I couldn't see anything that she was doing. Literally 5 minutes went by and she was done. She didn't even show me what she had done, she just handed me a mirror to look for myself. When I looked I was horrified. She cut way too much off and didn't do anything that I instructed her to do. I had been growing my hair out for a while, and now it's completely ruined and I have to spend another year growing it out to the length that I want it. There was a sign near the front that said something to the effect of no redos or touch-ups. Clearly she does not understand what customer service is nor understand the concept of customer satisfaction. read more

Saw the reviews and thought we'd give it a whirl. Turns out, all those reviews were on point. I took my son the day after Christmas to go get our haircuts. Joy was super nice, and while we sat and waited, she excused her self from the customer she was helping for a second and came back with an old stuffed Woody from Toy Story and handed it to my son. She explained that it actually belonged to her 22 year old son, and that he finally was willing to part with it, if he could give it to another kid to enjoy. My kid and I were blown away, and it helped keep the boy busy while we waited. When the boy went up, she was great with him. Guessed he was 2 and he giggled and corrected her that he was 3. She cut his hair perfectly in about 10 minutes at which point I went up. I showed her a pic of what I was looking for, and again, in like 10-15 minutes I was good to go. While I talked with her I learned a bit that impressed me: She'd been cutting hair for 12 years, 6 of which was in her own shop. She works the shop 6 days a week (Closed Tuesdays), and mainly by herself M-F. I asked her when was the last time she took a vacation, she laughed and replied "6 years ago." Hell of a woman. When all was said and done, we owed her $14 for two cuts, paid and gave her a tip. I think I may have found my new place to go from here on out. read more

Another reviewer here made a comment that he was skeptical whether or not he'd actually get a decent haircut here because of the low price. I'll second that mindset... and I'll also second that reviewer's resulting satisfaction. I needed to get a haircut today (Monday), and the only other barbers I'd ever been to around this local area were closed. I decided to trust the Yelpers once more, and once more that proved to be a good decision. I've got to mention the price factor again just because it's so outrageous--$7? Maybe there might be something wrong my haircut as it starts to grow out, but when my friend saw me about 15 minutes after I left Joy Barber and Salon, he asked me if I'd decided to go to a "stylist" instead of just a regular barber. I'll let that question of his be my review of the results... except to add that when she had me look at myself in the mirror when she was finished, it was the first time in years I remember thinking that my hair looked really good. I was in and out within half an hour. I had $15 on me and that's what I left. If the price of the haircut had been $15, I would have left $20+ and still thought it was a good deal. To say I'm satisfied with the service is an understatement. I don't review a place unless I can honestly give it 5 stars, and that what I'm giving Joy Barber and Salon for the quality of my haircut alone. The bang for the buck is bonus. And the fact that the proprietress is such a sweetheart just makes it all the better! read more
