Always delicious meals, drinks and sweet treats during every visit. Love this plan based spot and the name change to Joy Cafe which is on point with how you feel when you dine or just have a drink here.

Wonderful restaurant in every detail. From the warm, inviting ambience to the joyful menu names and descriptions to the fantastic huge selection of healthy meals. Plenty to love for my non vegan friends too. Great service from the owner herself. Everything made to order. Unlike some vegan places, they don't rely on unhealthy shortcuts like deep frying and oil and extra sugar and salt. The smoothies are incredible. And the breakfast options are too many to even name. For dinner and lunch you could come here for a week straight and not get a sample all the tasty dishes. I particularly like the Philly cheesesteak which one awards for the city . When the weather warms up the back patio is a pleasant oasis. Gluten free tasty bagels and desserts as well! Whenever I am in town this is the first place I stop!

Took over 30 minutes for two juices... Juices weren't even filled to the top of the cup and were warm. It was advertised as 16 ounces of cold pressed juice. The staff was moving so incredibly slow and had no sense of urgency. Ginger shots were not fresh ginger - it was ginger powder and water... very disappointing for my first visit at Joy Cafe

I think their name is "JOY" Cafe and not "SOY" Cafe but the address seems to be right, I went there for a simple coffee but they had a brunch menu and inside the cafe they seems to have some thrift items as well, there was also a outdoor sitting at the back garden( it wasn't open at the time I went) it might be request only. It's a pretty cool cafe overall!

I revisit Joy Cafe (which is the newest name/incarnation for Soy Cafe) whenever I'm in NoLibs. It always leaves me feeling incredibly healthy and happy. Soy/Joy Cafe is in my top two vegan restaurants in all of Philly. My favorite dish here is the ramen with BBQ seitan. The seitan is just so very tasty. Everything here, from the seitan, to the vegan cream cheese, is homemade. My husband gets the carrot lox sandwich which includes the housemade cream cheeze along with red onions, carrot lox, and more, on many choices of really excellent bread. Don't leave without getting a smoothie! I tend to get the Green Giant, but the Coco Loco is also really yummy. Eat in the back garden on a nice day!

Staff felt genuinely welcoming. Food was super flavorful across the board. We got the loaded nachos with jackfruit and the chili stuffed dish - both were honestly delicious. We ordered the Peruvian yuca and sweet plantains to split. I'm not a huge fan of aji amarillo and felt there was too much of it (I would've preferred it on the side), so the yuca wasn't my favorite dish, but it was still a solid appetizer. The sweet plantains were delicious, a classic, and exactly what I expected. The aioli was also nice, balancing out the sweetness. For my entree, I ordered the oyster mushroom tacos with the citrus salad. The oyster mushrooms were perfectly fried, but I felt like they were the slightest bit bland and I didn't love that there weren't any sauces to go with them. The citrus salad is interesting in that the "citrus" is a lemon-based dressing(?), but it's actually mostly tomatoes.

At first, I was worried we would only be able to get bar seating since neither of us put in a reservation. Luckily, the wait staff was able to seat us at a booth as long as we finished by 8pm---perfect! We weren't super hungry, but we were able to share one of the appetizers and get dishes for each of us. The appetizer we got was the rutabaga fondue, with pretzel bread and pickled veggies. It was an intriguing dish and the pickled veggies added an interesting tang. For my entree, I got the grilled tofu with kanzuri glaze, okinawa potato, sunchoke miso butter, fancy radishes, and shiso. The presentation was very much on point! For the two of us, our entire meal was around $80. A great experience from start to finish!

It's playful and cool and fun all at the same time. The staff here? Wildly accommodating, friendly, knowledgeable about their menu, and also exceptional at "reading the room" (eg we were given lots of space to just eat and drink without them checking in us needlessly). DRINKS: I had the Zombie Beach Party (coconut rum, light rum, pineapple, blue curacao, lime). It was a neon blue boozy slushy served in a glass skull topped a little pink umbrella and the juxtaposition of that alone is iiiiiiiiiincredible. (Also these are dangerous; I had two and they went down a little too easily, y'know?). FOOD: At our server's recommendation we got a half order of the Korean BBQ Wings (which were described as "very spicy") and the Tiki Wings ("kind of sweet"). Both are made from crispy seitan and are served with a cucumber ranch. I think they were okay, they kind of tasted similar to be honest, and the Korean wings were definitely not that spicy. We also got the Yokai Fries (fries topped with shishito peppers, togarishi, and yum yum sauce); sooooooo moreish! But ask for more yum yum sauce. The absolute killer (pun intended) here was the fried mac and cheese balls. NO MATTER WHAT, GET THESE. It comes in an order of two, they're tennis ball sized, the mac and cheese is not dry but gooey, the tomato sauce and generously sprinkle of parm bring the whole thing together. I'm fairly confident I could have eaten an order by myself (just like I'm fairly confident I could have had four Zombie Beach Parties). You ARE going out of your way to come here if you find yourself in Philly, friends!

The vibe is horror movie chic, if ya know what I mean. We were greeted and seated promptly and immediately checked out the menu to see what we should try. So, we started with the Mac balls and seitan Korean wings. Our apps arrived and I must admit. I enjoyed the seitan wings more than I did the Mac balls. The Korean BBQ (seitan) wings had an amazing sauce that truly made me forget I was at a vegan restaurant. They were crispy, savory, and just delicious. I decided to go with the gyro and my partner went with the cheese steak for his entree. My gyro was yummy! The impossible beef, lettuce and tomato were reminiscent of a regular gyro. I truly couldn't tell the difference. My partner loved his cheese steak too. Monster vegan is a HIT!! Would we try it again? Absolutely!!

The menu reads like something you've never seen before, with nearly every dish bragging some mind-blowingly sophisticated element, such as fermented chili aioli, kombu oil, vegan xo sauce, and noyaux (peach pits). Overall, the food was delicious, but these unique touches didn't come through in the dishes. Here is a rundown of everything we tried: - Sourdough focaccia with tomato xo: great focaccia that would have been excellent enough without all the adornment (abundant sesame and poppyseeds, kind of evoking an "everything bagel" vibe plus super salty "tomato xo" sauce that was a lot like sun-dried tomato paste). - Gem lettuces salad with smoked olives: the smokes olive bits were the best part. The dressing tasted a lot like blue cheese and was a little overly creamy but very tasty. - Golden beet salad with fermented chili aioli, young chard, and crispy sunchokes: the dressing was a lot closer to straight up mayonnaise than anything resembling fermented chili. Overly creamy, with leftover tuna salad vibes. The chard and sunchokes were fun additions, but overall this dish was underwhelming for what seems to be one of their specialties. - Cantaloupe with habanada and fermented husk cherry vinaigrette: we were expecting this dish to blow our minds, but it wound up tasting like cantaloupe sprinkled with chipotle veganaise. And it was very difficult to eat out of the flat bowl. - Heirloom tomatoes with roasted tomato jus, kombu oil, and basils: the tomatoes were delicious but it was insanely salty, and the kombu flavor didn't really come through. - Grilled escarole braised with heirloom lima beans, roasted garlic, and sage: I adored the two colors of heirloom lima bean that were perfectly cooked. The creamy sauce made with puréed lima beans was rich and felt like worthwhile decadence. My husband was the only one at our table to dislike this dish for being overly creamy and not having enough sage or escarole flavor. - Durum tagliatelle with datterini tomato sauce with braised lobster mushrooms: tasty but unremarkable. - Rosa bianca eggplant smoked and served with nardello pepper harissa, cashew labneh, and fennel pollen roasted walnuts: the harissa was so salty that it dominated all the other flavors. This might have been better as a dip served on crostini. - Black pearl mushroom slowly grilled over coals and served with roasted corn, spinach, and chanterelle miso glaze: the mushroom was tasty, but the corn was downright confusing. It was extremely sweet, and so creamy it evoked canned cream of corn soup. - Peanut mousse bar: like an elevated Snickers, but without the crunch. We loved it. - Peach pit white chocolate semifreddo: we did not know what to expect from this dish, but we were disappointed that we couldn't identify any white chocolate. It was like a soy milk popsicle with almondy flavor. Would not get this again. In summary, we had a blast trying everything on the menu, but we felt that most dishes fell short of their potential, based on the premium local produce and the novel flavors and cooking techniques. Without a doubt, they are using high-quality, hyperlocal ingredients on their entire menu. Unfortunately, they are not letting those products speak for themselves, but instead are drowning them in too much salt and excessively creamy sauces. I'm not sure if this was an attempt to appeal to people who aren't big fans of vegetables/macrobiotic foods. Also, a word on the setup of the menu. The "tasting menu" really just means share plates of each dish, intended to be for a party of two. If you have a larger party, it makes more sense to get a full-sized dish of each item à la carte, although some of the dishes are not the easiest to share, such as the escarole and lima bean stew and the eggplant dish. Everything is extremely seasonal, changing from week to week, so it would be fun to return and try a whole new lineup of dishes.

My boyfriend and I walked in on a Saturday night for a celebration dinner. They were very busy and…read morethey didn't have any open reservations but when we called and told them we would arrive in 30 mins, they saved two of the bar seats for us. For drinks, we ordered the elderflower shrub and sanguinello to drink. I liked the elderflower shrub since it was sweet and refreshing (slightly carbonated) but the sanguinello tasted bitter and medicinal. Since my bf really didn't like his drink, the server was nice enough to let us change our amaro drink to another elderflower shrub. For food, we ordered sourdough focaccia with tomato xo sauce (similar to chili crisp oil) and the potatoes dish. The sourdough was fluffy and delicious and the xo sauce gave it a nice flavor but it did make the bread greasy. The potatoes dish tasted good because of the creamy sauce that was drizzled on top. We also ordered the kyuri cucumbers and durum ravioli. The kyuri cucumbers had a fermented ramp ranch that gave the cucumbers a nice creaminess and the garnishes (spring onion and giardiniera) gave the cucumbers a nice texture. The durum ravioli had a cheesy taste due to the cultured cashew ricotta but I wasn't a fan. Overall, we would order the potatoes and cucumbers again, maybe we would order the sourdough focaccia (if you don't mind the greasiness), but we wouldn't order the durum ravioli again. For dessert, we ordered the macadamia ice cream with strawberries, shaved ice with rhubarb, and basil. Even though the ice cream was unique, we also wouldn't order it again. The basil flavor was a bit strong and the dessert tasted mostly like macadamia nuts and strawberries rather than ice cream. The ambience was nice though and even though we were not able to get a table, we had a nice view of the chefs' cooking. We would come here again since the menu changes based on what's in season. It was my second time at Pietramala and it was my boyfriend's first time and it won't be our last. :)
