Updated menu? Yes please. My partner and I visit The Tasty once per week now that we live in the Philly burbs. My favorites so far: - The Dirty Jersey (tofu egg sandwich with pork roll and cheeze) - The Tasty sandwich (tofu egg sandwich with coconut bacon, arugula, cheeze, and maple mustard) - Drip coffee with oat milk - Cappuccino with oat milk Usually I have to go to a cafe for good coffee, or a diner/restaurant for good food. This place does both coffee and food really well. And the space is super welcoming and friendly. Try to go on a weekday or arrive on a weekend between 8am-9am, if you don't want to wait too long. I had great expectations about The Tasty for it was named the number one vegan diner in America in the recent Veg News Best of 2024 issue. On a recent trip to Philly I stayed a short walk from The Tasty. When I went here to refuel post-yoga practice a little past half past 12pm on a Sunday afternoon had mixed emotions for the restaurant was packed so was happy so many folks were enjoying all vegan cuisine and also bummed because there was no indoor dining since they closed at 2pm. I had no alternative, but to take whatever vegan delight I ordered to go. I ordered the deluxe breakfast burrito aka tofu scramble vegan cheddar tempeh bacon jalapeno and red onion all topped with vegan sour cream and spicy vegan mayo. It came with a side of home fries. I found the service friendly and prompt. Happy that this all vegan diner was popular. I took a walk home to enjoy it and it was very tasty. 5 stars for the food and 5 stars for the service yet am deducting a star due to not being able to dine in which I love to do when dining out and experience the ambience. The only caveat is the restaurant is small and not much dining. Pro tip- Sundays are the busiest day here so if you want to dine in go on an off day aka Wed or Thurs or get there early on Sat or Sun otherwise you will be left getting take out like me. So I went back here with a friend. We had brunch together and were able to dine in. Excellent friendly welcoming service by Parker. All staff were on point. Ambience here is wonderful. It is small so get here early to dine in. I love the creativity of art in the diner. I had the Tempeh Deluxe Reuben with a side of Caesar Salad. Both were tasty and nourishing. My friend had the deluxe burrito that I previously had and French Toast that I tried and enjoyed. All in all we both loved our meals. Five stars if you can arrive early and land a table in the limited indoor seating. I pursued the baked goods that looked quite alright. A must try if in Philly! read more

The breakfast burrito was very good, and the decor is great. But the management/policy decisions ruin the experience. First, they try to cut back on labor by making you order at the counter AND pay AND tip as soon as you walk in, even if you've already sat down. Having given them a tip after I was directed to do half of the basic service work, neither I nor anyone else inside was offered a top-off of coffee or water or otherwise acknowledged. (Also, they don't allow searing at the counter. And instead of condiment bottles on the table they use wasteful single-use plastic containers.) By giving off classic coffee shop/diner vibes and rejecting the most basic things that make coffee shops/diners comfortable and hospitable (just to save themselves a bit of work), they really set you up for a let down. This was one of the best breakfasts I've ever had. I was so excited by the menu at the tasty - it was dreamy to be able to try biscuits and gravy without the meat. The set-up is simple - you order at the front counter and there's only a few tables for those who opt to dine-in. Not much service once you're seated, there are signs to come up to the front if you need anything. The espresso bar up front has great lattes came with oat or almond milk and there's several housemade syrups including rose, rose caradmon and mint. As for food, the tofu scramble was SO well done. It's a staple for a vegan diner but this particular scramble came together so well, especially with the tempeh bacon and vegan chipotle aioli. The biscuit and gravy was delicious, the gravy was smoky and I just wish there was a bit more of the vegan sausage with it. The pancakes might have been my favorite item, they were buckwheat pancakes and surprisingly so light and fluffy. The chocolate chips were dark and rich and it came with a side of butter and syrup (but the syrup wasn't pure maple). I enjoyed every single thing I had here - and left stuffed through most of the day. Next time I'm in Philly, this is going to be my first stop. read more

I want to start by saying this is the best vegan breakfast place I ever stumbled on while on my trip to South Philly. This place is not only a small friendly neighborhood vibe with the perfect number of limited seating. They make all there pastries on site plus their coffee and breakfast are top tier. My fiancé and I got the brown sugar ice coffee and iced rose chia tea and it blew our mind, It was really really really good. Then we had the French toast and pancakes and it was delightful. Sides were the breakfast sausage and home fries. Fries you can tell are fresh not frozen. 10 out of 10. Even if you are not looking for vegan options this place will feel your needs. Stopped in here during my first visit to Philly and I haven't stopped thinking about it since! It's small but cozy inside. I got there a little after they opened and got a table right away. The staff were super friendly. I had a hard time deciding what to get because everything sounded amazing, but opted for one of their specials- a Pumpkin Spice Hallowaffle! Best breakfast sandwich ever!!!! I'm not even a big breakfast sandwich person but I'd happily eat this one again and again

I walked 30 mins from center city to try this place, so I was hoping for something really fantastic. I got the Monte Cristo, which was good but not amazing. It felt a little lacking in the inside, needed more ham and cheese or something else. I also had an iced matcha and that was good. While the food felt average the place itself is very cute with fun decorations and the staff is very friendly. 3/5 - If you're not vegan then I'd say come here for the experience not the food We were in the area looking for a brunch spot nearby to grab-and-go some takeout, and this place showed up after looking around for a bit. It worked out as this place is currently take-out only and doesn't provide any eat-in dining options. It was in walking distance to where we were going to eat anyways so I figured why not? Before rating the food, I just want to make mention that I'm not vegan or vegetarian. I've had a lot of good vegan food on the west coast though and I dabble with frozen non-meat alternatives (shout-out to Aldi's). Breakfast Burrito Deluxe: Probably my favorite thing we ordered. The spicy mayo on top was really good, and the overall presentation of the dish was very nice. It tasted okay. I couldn't taste the "meat" very well though because the flavor of the tofu was very strong. It came with a side of fries, but they were pretty bad. The larger pieces weren't boiled all the way leaving them pretty dry and unpleasant to chew on. They didn't taste like they were seasoned either. Dirty Jersey: I'd hard pass on this one. I didn't enjoy it at all. It had this mushy texture in my mouth that made me feel unpleasant. It's not how a sandwich usually feels like in your mouth. I wasn't a fan of the tofu they had in the sandwich, and the "meat" was not to my liking either. My partner thought it was pretty good though and actually liked it more than the breakfast burrito. Passion Fruit Hibiscus Tea: It was pretty refreshing, although the flavor of hibiscus is pretty strong in this be warned. Chai Latte with Almond Milk: This was a pretty good chai latte. I read a review on here claiming to be the best chai latte in Philly; let's not get ahead of ourselves. It was good but I definitely wouldn't say it's anywhere near being the best. I'd come back here to order another chai latte though if I was in the mood. The service here was excellent. The woman working was very polite over the phone and she handed us our drinks while we waited for the food to be prepared. There's a nice little bench outside the restaurant to relax on (it does look like it's falling apart though so it might not be there anymore at the time you're reading this review). The window decorations are quirky and funny, and I appreciated the inclusivity posters they had displayed. The Tasty is not a place I'd recommend for their food if you're not vegan. After deciding to detox from my pescatarian diet for the first month of the year, I find myself on month four of a vegan lifestyle. The big test- how would I be able to continue this "commitment" while traveling. The city of brotherly love did not disappoint. I started off with breakfast at The Tasty. Takeout is the only option at this time from Wednesday- Sunday; however after waiting on hold for almost 15 minutes, I had an inkling it would be worth it. Jackpot! The home fries with added onions and peppers were cooked perfect. Not greasy and tons of flavor. The jewel of my meal was by far the biscuits and bayou gravy. Spicy heat, vegan sausage, and flavorful with each bite. I was in heaven! Never would I have imagined vegan biscuits and gravy would challenge the same version made traditionally. Food was average experience was unpleasant. The person taking our order was rude and unkind to myself, my partner and my kiddos. I am not sure what we did to offend them. I am IN LOVE with this place. I'm not exclusively vegan but I'm pretty flexible and have a few intolerances so it's nice to have the option. You can sit down but you can tell management thought about how to keep overhead low to keep prices down, so you have to bus your own table and you pick up your food from the kitchen yourself in addition to seating yourself. I kinda like it but I can see where people might take advantage. Here's what I recommend getting for a stellar meal experience- the kale side salad is bomb- I love the Deluxe BLT and the Deluxe Burrito (or order the off-the-menu deluxe burrito tot bowl) - the buff chick'n cheesesteak is increds and the latte's and house made doughnuts are off the chain! It is a very good thing that I don't live close to this place. If I was within a few miles of The Tasty, I might not have any money left. They are the best vegan restaurant in Philly and they make the best breakfast I may have ever had. The service is always amazing with so many considerate and friendly people working there. The bar is closed and there's barely tables. You can order coffee and baked treats while you wait for just opt for takeout. I tried the breakfast sandwich with coconut bacon. It was just ok. I didn't love the bacon, it just tasted like salty coconut and I wish I had gotten the tempeh instead. Egg and cheese were alright but I didn't like the bun either, it was dry. Prices are reasonable and portions are plenty, so you'll be able to try a variety of menu options and leave with a full belly or with leftovers! I am gluten free but still had plenty to choose from! I got the Breakfast Boost Toast, GF, tofu scramble with cheese and tempeh bacon! I would describe the tempeh bacun as more of a tempeh scrapple in terms of texture and appearance. Either way it was flavorful and delicious! We also got the tots aka hash browns, a perfect little addition! I would recommend having an idea what you want prior to going. I only say this because you order right when you walk in the door at the counter. Make sure you look at the specials before you make a final decision! The staff was helpful and friendly. To top it all off I also got an iced coffee. Again, large and reasonably priced. They offer bottomless coffee as well for a slight up charge. There is a compost bucket in the back, awesome! The Tasty is a fun, retro themed, sort of fast casual vegan diner that serves huge portions. You won't leave hungry. It's a small but welcoming place with funky decor and a friendly feel. A word of warning (or recommendation) - the coffee is STRONG. I kept putting milk in it and it wasn't changing color. I got a Tofu Egg & Cheez sandwich with tempeh bacon and home fries. Absolutely amazing, and I'm not vegan. Our food came out surprisingly quickly for such a busy place. Yummy breakfast goodies! I came here knowing that this spot was all vegan. I have delved with few vegan establishments and I liked how this place was run. Walk in, place your order at the counter, pay, find a seat, and then you get called up once your food is ready. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Don't Sit Down!! The Tasty has been on my Philly vegan to do list for awhile. This last weekend I could finally cross it off the list. That being said, there are rules in this place! Rule One: don't sit down until you order your food at the counter. I warned you ahead of time. My friend was running like 10 minutes behind me. I have an issue with not being able to save a table or a fear of not being seated. Totally not worth worrying about. I was informed that I should order first and then sit down. I tried to keep my cool. I dissected the menu to see what was the most appetizing. Brunch? Or Lunch? Oh the dilemma. And then I spotted the old school diner counter was also covered in cake stands filled with the best looking vegan donuts. I knew that one of those little guys was coming home with me. I was drawn to the lunch and specifically the BLT. I noticed they had a "Super" BLT that consisted of two kinds of "bacon". I've had the toasted, grilled tempeh kind but the coconut bacon was new to me. When my friend arrived, she was really instantly as a regular. My friend and the guy working said to try both. It was the best suggestion. The only thing I would have added and paid extra for was "Avocado" (my favorite). It would have added a refreshing creaminess to the decadent sandwich. By the time it was ordering time. I was a woman with a mission. Super BLT with waffle fries (go big or go home), chocolate sprinkle donut in a to go bag, oatmeal milk (my current favorite milk substitute) cortado and an enamel pin that I've been stalking by Steff Bomb. The pin is of a flirtatious piece of toast. Something about those charming carbs that make me weak in the knees!! We decided to sit at the counter. The counter had cleared out. Thank goodness. The food came out quickly. The waffle fries were crispy good and the Super BLT lived up to its reputation. It's was gigantic!! I loved the fresh slabs of tomato with the crispy lettuce. The bacons added some crunch and smokiness that us non meat eaters lack in our diets for the most part. My cortado was creamy and strong. And my donut...I devoured that donut the next couple days and it was sweet and delicious and took me back to being that kid obsessed with sprinkles. The space here is huge and has that Portlandia feel that I miss from the NW. I felt comfy talking to my friend about the night before's X concert, concert "ok" touching, friend stories and the importance of tomatoes in a BLT. Ha!! In the hipster community in south Philly. I went for Sunday brunch it was packed. They ran out of the potatoes for home fries that everyone raves about. The best thing I ate was the sausage Pattie's it appeared to be homemade. The Cajun biscuits and gravy was not a favorite needed more flavor but I'm Auntie which is not a vegan enjoyed it. Everything is very savory and fills me up! - Spinach Soysage Tofu Scramble/Omlet: A bit dry but is great when you add ketchup to it. The soysage tastes like real meat and is well seasoned. - Fried Chick'n Sammy: The chicken surprisingly has the same texture as real chicken and is fried delightfully well. The waffle fries that came with it were delicious. However, everything is pretty dry so make sure you add ketchup! - Buffalo Chuck's Cheezsteak: This is one of my favorite items on the menu. The deluxe burrito has really nice and smoky tempeh, slightly spicy jalapeños peppers, and a creamy spicy Mayo. In all, it's a nice balance of flavors and a great filling breakfast. The surprising star of the show is the waffle fries. They are well seasoned and crispy, despite being take out, and remind me of Arby's fries. My husband, being from the rural south, has high expectations for biscuits and gravy. He found the biscuits not too fluffy but the gravy was great despite it being vegan. As for COVID precautions, it's take out only and you have to call in your order. After calling in, I showed up at the door where there was a table labeled with directions on how to order And pick up. We got there about 9:30, and they only had the limited menu of breakfast sandwiches, which was very disappointing. The food itself lived up to the restaurant's name. I opted for the Italian sandwich, and it was fantastic. I inhaled it. It helped soak up some of the alcohol from the night before. My cousin got the tofu egg and cheese with tempeh bacon on an everything bagel, and she also inhaled it. The price is super reasonable for the quality and size of the sandwiches. The big selling point for my cousin (who's the actual vegan) was that they had oat milk for her coffee. Apparently very few places carry it, but she loves it and was very exited that they carried it.
