I had chunks of fried chicken in my salad. Not sure how that made it in. The ingredients in the menu listed avocado. Not a single shread of avocado in the salad. I asked the waiter and he explained that it was avocado puree, even though it was listed as avocado on the menu. The chicken was cold and tough. The mojitos were delicious,. This was once our place for special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries, but after the last few tries, it will be a while before we will go back. Last week my husband and I decided to go downtown for dinner, only to find the restaurant we chose closed. It's a small town and we know this happens on occasion. Rather than drive somewhere else, we walked across the street to The Root and Barrel. While our last dinner experience with friends there was disappointing, cold food replaced by what was possibly reheated cold food rather than fresh, we opted to give it a try. It was an off day and the no wait time for a table was appreciated. The server was friendly and attentive at the beginning. We ordered drinks and the Brussel's Sprouts and Feta app. We both liked the crispy sprouts and flavor, but I had to ask the server if it was supposed to be served hot or cold. She said hot and I told her it was cold. She offered to bring another, but honestly, it was still really good even if cold. Maybe they should offer that option. On to dinner! I had the small beet salad as my entree and hubby had the braised short rib over grits. The positive: my salad was a good portion and he shared the ribs and grits. I will go back just for those ribs and grits!! Fall off the bone tender and grits were not dry. The negative: his starter salad came with the meal rather than before and my salad was more disappointing. I am not sure how to describe it. You may find it wonderful; I found it not what I was expecting. Sorry for the vagueness of that. As for the attentiveness of our server, we ended up with two. It was not busy and they did not say our first one was in training, but we had different people at the table during dinner and we found ourselves repeating what we had told the other one. If they had not asked repetitive questions, it would not seem like they both thought we were their table. Confusing, but rather have too many check ins than none at all. Bottom line: We will go back after ownership dust settles and give it one more go, if only to get those short ribs over grits again. Hope we won't be disappointed. read more

This was a really great spot! We sat on the patio which gave us a really nice atmosphere. Had great service! The food was absolutely amazing! The food was wonderful! And the server, a young man named Nate - who was very articulate, thorough, and attentive - impressed our party with his professionalism. However, the person who served as host, that I found out later was actually the manager, did not provide a good impressive. He (Scott?) was solemn faced and highly unfriendly. I took the love of my life to Root and Barrel and it was the worst dining experience possible. I have supported this beautiful restaurant from it's beginning....however, I am reconsidering my position. We were seated in a timely manner for our 7 pm reservation by the affable and accommodating manager who was acting as the host, bus boy and manager. The set Valentines menu was one each of three or four choices of a starter (no salad), entree and desert for $55 each. My choice of starter was out so plan B was Bruschetta....a favorite. It was more like French Melba toast with scant bruschetta sauce. We chose 8 oz filet. It arrived after a wait and it looked perfectly done to our requested medium rare. Unquestionably the worst filet we have ever had....the likeness of chewing on a lineman's leather work boot. We left most of it uneaten. My choice of dessert was Italian Cream Cake. And they delivered....a sliver of a cake wedge about 1/2" thick. The server (a lovely lady who did her best to overcome the faults of the kitchen) felt bad about the entire thing and said they took off the cost of a coke and $9 glass of wine. The bill was $153, meal, tax and tip. Seemed a bit high, but I didn't want to question it and ruin a Valentines evening for my sweetheart of 23 years. They seem to have a "just good enough" attitude toward the food. The coffee served to us was cold, the house chips with my sandwich were stale and bitter, and the portions were stingy in every sense. My falafel pita was half a small pita with two falafels, three pickled carrot sticks, and a teaspoon of aioli. And then a mountain of yesterday's chips. Poor experience all the way around. Walked in and hostess asks if we had reservations. It was 5:30 and place was empty. When we said no she replied that they might could find us a place in the back. After we ordered waitress said she would bring bread but didn't. When she finally brought our food we asked again and she did. We had fried green tomatoes which were good. Salad was good but chicken was tough and over cooked. Probably left under a heat lamp and dried out. Pasta entree was small but good. Overall cost for this was $50. Although the food was pretty good it was so hot inside that it was hard to enjoy. Our table had the pimento beer cheese and the pork "wings" to start and both were good. For entry's we had the trout which was okay, the shrimp and grits which was light on shrimp, and the chicken and dumplings which was like soup. Everything was nicely seasoned. we had sorbet and carrot cake which I recommend that you skip. read more

Went last week with family for lunch. It took over an hour and 15 min for us to get our food.Drinks we ordered never came and waiter appeared to be ignoring the table. Manager never came over and said anything .Wife finally went to bar to order drink, it contained so much lemon juice it was undrinkable. The Fried Pork Wings were outstanding, although a few pieces were mostly fat. Yes, that is a fatty type of meat, but a few pieces were excessive. The Smoked Rib Eye was tender with rich flavor. The Hot Chocolate Brownie dessert was sinfully delicious. The owner of this restaurant must have a lot of money, and he doesn't need customers. This place has a lot of potential, but it is badly managed. We arrived ten minutes before two, were seated and given lunch, and appetizer menus. The waitress took our drink order, and we ordered some wings. We waited, and waited for our drinks only to notice the poor waitress mixing our cocktails while the manager/bar tender was just hanging out behind the bar. Trust me they were slow. Finally our drinks came, only to be told they had stopped serving lunch, lunch menus were removed, and all they were now serving were apps. The waitress did not tell us to hurry up and place an order, nor did the hostess tells us they would stop serving lunch after two. We then see burgers being served to a couple of ladies seated outside. We discuss all this with the manager. The manager checks with the kitchen, and tells us he is sorry but the kitchen is closed and setting up for dinner. Are you kidding me. Then he says to come back for dinner. The pimento mac and cheese is amazing, the Pimento BLT with fried green tomatoes was out of this world and their fries are some of the best I've had. Let me be clear: the food, decor, and vibe get a solid A+. But the service gets a solid D-. I wanted to love this place, and I basically insisted on trying it. I grew up in Franklin, and we met my best friend and her family here last night for dinner. Everyone told me it's "hit or miss," and sadly, last night was a huge "miss." We were seated fairly quickly, considering how busy they were and we had five in our party, including a four-year-old. But it was downhill from there. We had ordered drinks at the bar during our wait, and never got them. The gentleman behind the bar was VERY nice, but explained he wasn't a bartender, there was no bartender on duty, and everyone was making their own drinks. We ended up having to go back to the bar after sitting down and getting the drinks. Ten minutes later, we had to ask a passing server for menus. We finally ordered our food and asked SPECIFICALLY if the child's plate (plain, buttered noodles) could come out first, with our salads, because she was hungry and tired. Our server said no problem, but then forgot, and the child's plate was brought out with our entrees 20 or so minutes later. We also ordered a bottle of wine, which the server had trouble finding, and then couldn't open, so we borrowed her corkscrew and did it ourselves. After dinner, we asked about dessert, and she went to check on options but never came back. My friend went on the floor and found her, got our check, and we paid and left. Again, to clarify, the food was DELICIOUS, and our server was very sweet and tried very hard. But the place is understaffed and servers are clearly undertrained. And how do you not have a bartender working the dinner shift?? For what we paid ($200 including tip), it was a terribly disappointing experience, and we won't return. Get it together guys, please! Very nice place. The atmosphere is classy without being pretentious. The only issue we had was that they automatically blacken their meats. My wife wasn't aware of that when she ordered the steak. She is not a fan of blackened meat so she did not eat it. When the waiter noticed this, he asked about any problems. That's when he informed us of their policy. My wife was full from the other food so we did not want a redo and it wasn't their fault. They insisted on giving us one of their many desserts on the house despite our protesting it wasn't needed. Needless to say, the waitstaff and management were very gracious. My kids enjoyed their food (grilled cheese, hamburger, and pasta) and I enjoyed my fried chicken with crispy sweet potatoes and cauliflower. For an appetizer we had the hot pimento cheese dip which was very tasty. They had a nice collection of beers on tap and the bar was, from what I saw, was all top shelf bottles. What a nice surprise to find in Franklin, NC. Well decorated, tastefully done but very casual. The menu provides a wide variety of fare; beef, pork,fish and fowl, also including rabbit, duck and a vegetarian option! We chose a varied selection between the four of us. Chicken breast, House burger (HUGE!), vegetarian plate and crab cakes, with pimento cheese and crisps and a ceasar salad for appetizers. All were exceptional! Went there for Sunday brunch. They said the soup of the day was a lentil soup with parsnips, which I ordered. I received a squash bisque. When I asked them about it, I was told "Yea, we switch it up sometimes". (Maybe I'm not supposed to know the difference between a bisque and a lentil). She forget half of our group of 8 menus, she took a few people's orders then would leave and come by and took the rest of the tables order the food is way overpriced, it is delicious but it is way overpriced for this area we are not in New York which I have been to.
