Just recently revisited this establishment after 15 years! I was impressed with the looks of the bakery. Very modern with a great scheme! It is an old building and I did notice a few things that could be cleaned or updated to prevent issues but that didn't change the quality of service or food. We purchased a variety of treats and also tried their breakfast sandwich. Depending on your sweet tooth is whether or not you will like their items. I found some to be a perfect balance of sweetness while others were very very sweet. The gingerbread cookie was not the best I've had. While items like the devil dog, petite fours, Mardi Gras king cake and cookies were amazing despite the sugar coma you will fall in after eating! But hey, it's a bakery and these items should be a "treat" and they are! The cases are just eye candy for the soul! read more

I emailed this place to place and order for a popular cake. It's the sponge bob what's funnier than 24 cake. I receive a rude email back asking me how many times am I going to ask for the same cake from different emails. I don't know what they are talking about. I only messaged them from one email and I looked back in my sent emails and couldn't find another sent message to them. This was such a hateful way to reply. Ack to an innocent customer. here is the email messages we sent back and forth. This should be the only email? We purchased a pecan pie for an office Thanksgiving party & we were completely disappointed. The pie was awful! The crust had no flavor & the filling was very thick & dry. The crust was rolled up into the filling making it even thicker. The pecans were the only good parts & God made those. J's Bakery pecan pie tasted like the little tiny pecan pies that are sold in the grocery stores. I emailed the owner & let him know. This was his latest reply: "Just because I don't agree with you doesn't mean that I have poor customer service. I'm just not sure that you know what you're talking about. The taste was okay. The price has gone up and amount of goods was lower. We bought petits fours and they are not what they used to be. Only reason I'm giving extra star is for the appearance of the cake. I was super excited when I picked up my son's first birthday cake and smash cake. Both cakes were decorated beautifully. However at the party when starting to cut into cake it totally just crumbled. Ultimately, cake was not edible. It was quite embarrassing to have all the guests there having to throw away the cake. It seemed like cake was baked then frozen for who knows how long. I reached out to owner ( I happened to have her number since we had texted week prior regarding cake decorating) by text along with attached photo of Dry cake with no response. I even told her I was not asking for refund just awareness of this issue. I was going to give the shop benefit of doubt and not review a negative review on here but with dry cake and poor customer service I felt need to let people know not to use this shop until things change drastically. We just enjoyed the best birthday cake in years at 1/4 the cost of the same size cake we had last year. J's still makes pound cake and it is moist and delicious. The buttercream icing is as good or better than when we ordered from J's in the 50's, 60's and 70's. The bakery is moving to a downtown location in late summer. If I could give this place a zero, I would. How does this place even stay in business? How is it still coasting by on the original owner's name and delicious baked deliciousness after all these years? The service is terrible (I have left the last 3 times without acknowledgement, let alone service), the place is dark and not well stocked, and the one time I did get service, the cake I got was stale. Top top it all off - a friend of mine, who is a pastry chef and trained culinary wizard, asked for an application at this bakery (because they are hiring), and the owner the owner (who is actually a female) flat out said that they did not hire women to work in the kitchen and would not give her an application. While their birthday cakes are good, that matters not if there's no birthday cake waiting for you after one has been ordered. Called twice about the cake and yet when I got there to pick it up, they couldn't find my order. What I ordered was a six inch cake. There were two eight inch cakes in the fridge priced to sell. One would think a wise business practice would have been to offer me one of those at the six inch price, rather than letting me leave empty handed and seething, but instead was told I could come back the next day for a cake. Fat chance. Pity since we live in walking distance of the establishment, but our current take is "never again." read more

I went into the bakery last Saturday and ordered 10 petit fors and 6 cream horns for $30. She used a box much too small for the petit fors so she crammed one in the box with cream horns which smashed it and it was covered with cream and powdered sugar, and broke two cream horns in half. The tiny box with the nine other squeezed in petit fors, two more were smashed. I tried calling for the manager but they are never in and left my phone number twice and no call returned. As much as we love j's their premium price and smashed goods are unacceptable. Be careful when buying here make sure they give big enough boxes for items. read more

I came here to get something sweet after lunch at City Grocery and was overwhelmed by all of the delicious options! Cinnamon rolls the size of my head, bear claws as big as my arm! After getting some advice from a frequent customer, I had to try one of their famous "Devil Dogs" OMG! It was rich, indulgent, and simply amazing. Chocolate cake, thick buttercream icing, all dipped in chocolate; these satisfy the strongest sweet tooth! I also ordered a s'mores cake ball (dry and not good, hence the four star review) and a loaf of the cinnamon sugar breakfast bread--Absolutely wonderful! My husband ate the entire loaf in just a few days. (Heat in the oven and spread with butter!) When I paid, the lady informed me they don't take credit cards for orders under $10. My face was shocked, not because of their credit policy but because I could not believe all of that food was only $6.50!!!!!! What a deal!!! I love J's! I grew up not far from this bakery in East Hill and their cakes and pastries are a fond childhood memory. I love their cake! I love love love their frosting! (It's not for you if you don't like really sweet frosting). As some other reviews have noted, their petit fours are really good. Their cheese danishes are amazing! They are the cheese danishes that I judge all other cheese danishes by. As a result, I have had to stop eating other cheese danishes because none of them could even come close to how good J's is. I live on the other side of the country now, but almost every time I'm back in town I have something from J's (usually cake). read more

Terrible customer service! I called to reserve some cookies for my child's teachers on the first day of preschool and they sold the cookies to someone else before I got there. They had them set aside with my name on the box, but said that I did not pay for them in advance so they sold them to someone else. They did not ask for payment info when I called to reserve them. I usually don't write reviews but please take a sec to read if you are considering going to this place. We came home to Pensacola to have my baby's first birthday party and ordered the cake from J's and had a terrible experience. I posted a review on Google and got a response from the "owner" that just shows they aren't gonna be in business too long if they continue the way they are. I already heard negative things about the new owners, but having J's cakes for birthdays has been a tradition in my family so I wanted the same for my girls when possible. Should have listened to reason! My initial review: 1 star "New management SUCKS! As a longtime J's cake conasuer, I was skeptical about ordering my daughters 1st birthday cake from there since they recently underwent new management. Against my better judgment I thought I'd give it a try anyway, hoping to get the same delicious cake I grew up on. The cake was beautiful, but very deceiving because it was raw on the inside! Once I cut into the cake, it was dry, yet the center of it was like dough. I called to the bakery to inform them of the undone cake and was basically called a liar by the owner Erica and cake decorator Shanelle. I was told there was no way the cake was raw. And to think this is only the second issue that made me regret my decision. The first was when I ordered the cake on a Monday before the party, well in advance and was asked when I needed it ready by. I informed the baker I wanted the cake ready at noon that Saturday. She messages me the day of the party asking again what time I need the cake, that the time was "smudged" on the receipt. I again told her 12. We show up at 12 to get the cake and it's no where near ready!! We had to wait an hour to get the cake! Which of course made us late for our baby's first party. You would think the owner would be sympathetic and accommodating after they dropped the ball so many times....nope! Wasn't offered an apology, but was insulted and made out to be a liar. They did offer a measly 10% off, but when u spend $100 for a cake for a special ocassion u kinda want it to be perfect. That's not enough to make up for ruining her cake and casing us to be late or the sucky customer service we received. NEVER will I ever spend my money at J's bakery again and will discourage everyone I know from doing so." Response from the Owner: "We appreciate you taking your time to write a review. You misrepresented so much of what actually happened with the cake it's hard to know where to start. The cake was cooked correctly and it was really pretty. A cake can't be undercooked and dry at the same time. Showing up an hour earlier than scheduled pick up time does not equal us making you wait an hour. We check every cake before we send it out. We know your cake was cooked correctly. Our lack of apology is simply based on the fact we had nothing to apologize for. If it was such a big deal that you were unhappy with the cake you would have brought it back. I'm the owner and the people you spoke to shouldn't have offered a discount sight unseen anyway. We aren't going to give anyone a discount without seeing the product. I'm sorry that you were unhappy enough to write a review. I just moved from Ohio to Pensacola and I'm trying to find a fantastic donut shop. The price is affordable, the staff is very friendly, and the donuts are ok. The glazed donut, or honey dip, tasted more like a cinnamon donut than a glazed/honey dip. I was disappointed in the selection. My son loves the cream filled donuts, but I was told they are only available on Sundays. I can't say I would never eat another donut from this bakery, but I'll keep looking for a better shop. read more

We stopped by hoping to find cheesecake or carrot cake, but neither were available without special order. Most of the racks were empty, but it was late afternoon. The only things left were cookies, petit fours, and a few coffee cakes. I assume this is the type of place that you have to get to early in the morning to get the good stuff. After the woman behind the counter tried to sell us on a variety of coffee cakes, we settled for the cherry cheese coffee cake and it was good, but not good enough to go out of your way for it. I won't be going back. I ordered a cookie cake two weeks ahead of time, and today they did not have my order ready. They said it was because it needed to be prepaid, however, I've special ordered from them before and paid at pick up. The real problem, though, is the bad customer service. Just a couple years ago this place would have gotten a five-star rating. I'm not entirely sure what happened. When we were first married, this place was the absolute best. Cookies were moist and full of sugary goodiness. From what I heard, it's a local favorite to always stop by here and get the black&white cookies or the gingerbreadmen during Christmas.It was heresy to not indulge in this little family owned bakery. Unfortunately, the family sold to new management and new management likes it dry. I thought that it was a fluke or the fact that my husband was driving 8 hours to get the cookies to me. Now that we live here, we've been a couple times and the cookies are hit or miss. We've decided to completely forget about the chocolate bars, they're always too dry. The prices have either gone up or stayed the same, but the portion got smaller. It's hard with the economy, but be fair to your loyal clientele. Macaroons look exactly like the ones made at Hilton Head Cookie Factory, but taste like they were cooked to much. The service... impatient and borderline rude. Not outwardly rude, just 'you're a waste of my time, why am I even here still' rude. Their words were polite, but the tone just wasn't there.
