Great service (improved from the old days) Shown to a table and offered water. Fish came piping hot (as usual) and is always delicious. Obviously a change of owners. But I like the improvements. Highly recommend. And I'm British, who loves piping hot fresh fish and chips. Only change to make it authentic and really better would be large British size fish portions and hand cut chips from potatoes, then twice cooked the traditional way. A most amazing experience! My friend and I are traveling from Dayton, Ohio. We heard the fish at Js was fresh and tasty but didn't hear anything about the service. When we were greeted J said (with a smile), "just so you know, we close in 15 minutes. You can get your food to go or eat really fast" We choose to get it to go. J was very talkative to me, while I waited for our meal to be prepared. He told us about the "ways of the land" in Lincoln City. If you want fish & chips in this town, this is THE place. It's simple and clean, with seating for about a dozen people. The sign on the door states the rule clearly: "To Go" means "To Go". That is, if you order ahead do not plan on indoor seating. Sounds strict and you will understand when you get there. It's worth it. We both ordered the 3pc halibut. The fish was perfectly prepared for our tastes, the batter was the perfect weight and not too greasy. Coleslaw comes with the fish and chips. They offer regular fries (excellent), curly fries (we did not try these), and chips which my wife selected. They are deep fried very thin potato slices and are nicely salted, and not greasy, she really enjoyed them. As for the slaw, she liked it because it had very little sauce, I prefer more sauce, so there you go. It's still good slaw. This is a 4.9 rating. We have visited Lincoln City many times over the years (from out of state). When we discovered J's it was our fish & chips shop of choice until a couple years ago. For whatever the cause, the quality seemed to have dropped. I was hesitant to go there on this trip but am so glad we did. The fellows running this shop now are doing a fantastic job. FYI: I initially tried to send this message privately via J's website but the "Contact Us" link to send an email was not working. Dear J's~ We have been coming to your establishment for many years for your delicious food and have always been very satisfied with our purchases in regards to quality and value. Yesterday, however, we put in a take-out order for a 10 piece Halibut meal ($48) and a 3 piece Cod meal ($13). Expecting to get the same great food and value we have been accustomed to for many years, we did not look the order over before paying and leaving. Upon getting to our destination and opening the boxes, we could not have been more disappointed. Although just as delicious, the 10 Halibut pieces were only as big as 1" by 1" and the Cod pieces were smaller than normal as well. We fully understand that the price of fish has gone up and therefore we were more than willing to pay the increased fees. But we did not expect that the pieces would be substantially smaller than what we were accustomed too. Additionally, while waiting, we observed the portions being served to sit-down customers were of regular size, i.e., what we have always gotten in the past, i.e., at least 3" by 3" pieces. Suffice to say, we did not have enough food to feed my husband, myself, and two teenagers, like we have always been able to in the past. Not sure what happened here? I did notice that the special yesterday was Halibut Bites? Is it possible that the order we placed was mistaken for Halibut Bites instead of the traditional Halibut pieces served in the 10 piece order? I did pay a total of $63.50 and feel that this price was way-to-high for the portion of food we received. We would be very much interested in hearing your thoughts and gaining an explanation of whether your portions have changed for take-out orders as opposed to sit-down orders. Because my friend likes this place, we ordered a family pack of 10 pieces of cod, your choice of fries, coleslaw, and 4 sauces for take out. After taking my first bite, I was somewhat disappointed because there was more breading than I would like. For my fish, I prefer a light crispy batter. Something has definitely changed, and not for the better! The staff was efficient but not necessarily friendly. Jay or his wife were not there and not sure if that is why the lower standard of food. Ordered the 3 piece cod and cup of chowder. The chowder lacked the flavor I was used to getting here and was runny and bland. The cod was half the size and based on what i was used to, I would say was frozen fillets with no or very little seasoning. Same with the coleslaw- bland. I was very disappointed! read more

Busy on a Tuesday at lunch time, so we took it to go and ate lunch on the beach down the street, the guy who took our order was fast and efficient and still friendly and welcoming, not rude or anything, even when there was a rush. He ran a tight ship! Food came out quick and hot! No complaints, napkins, straws, utensils, everything to go was in the bag already waiting, we were out the door quickly and away we went. Very good system they were running there. I recommend if you want good quick seafood on the coast! I got the combo, 2 cod 1 halibut 2 big shrimp, and a big mound of curly fries (you can pick reg fries or chips too) and slaw) and the sauce is good too. Not bad for the price! It's a small spot, with explicit instructions when you enter (I'm assuming they get a lot of traffic and need to keep it moving). We were kindly greeted! We ordered at the counter and were then instructed which table at which to sit. I had the three piece of Cod, my husband had the combo which included cod, halibut and shrimp. The food was served piping hot and was AMAZING! The breading was a thin crunchy batter instead of that thick beady batter. And their tartar sauce - not sure if it was homemade but it was fantastic! Second and third pieces were so "fishy" that I couldn't even eat them. It was truly awful. My husband's order also had 2 out of 3 pieces with that super fishy. Very disappointing. The thin (if creamy) sparsely-clammed chowder seems that it must be so drastically under seasoned because the lady at the counter is so salty with their "Seinfeld soup nazi"-like rules for managing the queue. There was zero forgiveness offered for our 80-year-old in-laws who accidentally said "yes" when they asked "to-go or staying -in?"-- and though we sailed thru The Rules acceptably they wouldn't let us give up our table to them. Parents goofed up and had to eat in their car. We got to eat-in. J's does seem a popular spot with a steady queue and long food waits. Panko breaded-style fish portions (rather than the beer batter we wish they had) were tasty and juicy-- with a decent tartar sauce and malt vinegar standard-- and I'm not sure that I doubt their claims to being a local award-winner. Although the fish was good enough to overshadow the fries being standard-nothing-special, and cole slaw decent, yet "KFC" style of expectedness, the dour sadness of their weak-sauce chowder makes me think we were recommended to go to J's as a diversion so the locals can get a better fish and chowder lunch elsewhere. 2.5 stars. read more

My experience here was positive. I went after the lunch rush so there were a few empty tables when it was my turn to order and I was fortunate I didn't have to navigate a crowd or wait. If you read the signs before entering the restaurant, you'll know exactly what to expect. For those that don't agree with the written statements, then it is a choice before entering whether you want to dine there. I'll admit the rules come off firm and, it helps manage expectations for all. It might be a little bit harsh to call this place a fish Nazi but I see where it's coming from. If I was equival I would say they put you in a bit of a catch-22. They don't have enough room for everyone to sit down when they're busy. So if you get your food to go, they have a sign that says don't throw away your trash from your to-go food there. I think that's the least they could do to help people who take their food to go outside and sit in their car and eat and then want to get on their way without having fish smelling trash in their car. They have rules for things you wouldn't imagine. But they're a small space. They have good food, pretty good prices so they need to manage the resources as best they can, which probably explains most of it. I appreciate the "wait until you order before you sit down" rule as it keeps people who got in line after you from snagging the last table, leaving you to stand. I had the halibut the wife had the cod. They are both really quite good. I think I would probably just go for the cod as it seems like it's about as much fish as the halibut for a few dollars less. The halibut might have been a little bit firmer but all the food is cooked to order, very quickly and served hot and fresh. That's really important to me for any fried food. I was wondering if I had enough french fries but I had plenty by the time I finished. You can't really game the system because if you phone in your order it's a to-go order and if you have a to go order you can't sit anywhere except maybe in a couple of chairs next to the wall while you're waiting for your food to be delivered.h read more

I've been coming here for years! The restaurant is a yellow house and is nothing special. The service is usually decent whenever I go. But the food is great! Well I always stop at J's fish and chips when I am on the coast. I have been here six times and the food is always piping hot, fresh and fast. Did I mention its my favorite restaurant on the coast, I live near Jefferson. Prices are more than reasonable, and its a lot of food you get. This is not a fancy place and limited seating and they close early. If you want great food this is your place. Visiting Lincoln City and we stopped at J's Fish and Chips for lunch at my suggestion. Since this is a smaller restaurant and they were a bit packed, we decided to take our lunch back to the beach house we're staying in. We walked in and were instantly greeted by the lady at the counter. I ordered a fish sandwich with fries on the side and my boyfriend ordered a 3 piece halibut with fries on the side. The menu didn't specify what type of fish they had on my sandwich, but I believe it was either cod or haddock. While it was a little busy, we didn't have to wait too long for our food to come out. Now I think this was the best fish and chips I've had so far during my time here. The fish sandwich and the halibut were so delicious and so flavorful! Great parking, be careful crossing over into lot, lots of non stop traffic. I called in our order, due to my time. Customer service was professional and quick. Stopped by here on my trip to the coast to grab some fish and chips and clam chowder. I had the fish and chips made from fresh local lingcod, and my guest had clam chowder. The fish and chips were fairly thickly breaded more of a Panko style. Crispy, crunchy exterior and the fish inside was juicy. It said fresh, although it almost seemed more like it had been frozen, but I could be mistaken. All in all the fish was OK. The fries had a lot of small, broken pieces which while it didn't affect the taste , certainly did the presentation. The coleslaw was definitely not anything special. Clam chowder tasted mostly like flour. It lacked any real clam chunks and was not even finished. Probably not going back. read more

I have NEVER in my life had worse service anywhere!! We ordered our food and initially thought we would take it to go. After it was done we said we would just eat it there. The owner told us we could not eat it there. We ordered it to go so we had to leave and by the way you can't leave your garbage here either. When we asked why she escorted us out the door and said that's the way it is.
