I never got a MAN-icure until I moved to SF and made 700 million selling my brilliant online greeting card dotcom to Excite@ home (which later resold the dog for 40 million - haha, screw you Excite!) and decided that with my newly found riches I could afford a little pampering in the form of a Vietnamese woman fretting over my greedy, capitalistic, cuticle-covered claws. I then tried various places around SF and found that there was a vast difference in the quality of MAN-icures given. I would exit some shops with hangnails and cuticle skin still on my nails - egads! Sometimes my manicurist would be cursed with flower-wilting halitosis. The worst experience was when my manicurist suggested I go with clear polish. I stupidly said yes and with in a few days, the polish having become chipped and natty, my hands looked like those of a homeless transvestite. Other places would make my fingers look like perfection. In fact, I did some hand modeling for a while (not for the money, obviously, but to meet female hand models - I've a fetish, you see). I've learned a lot since those days. Always buff. Never polish. Tip well. And once you find a good manicure shop, stick with them. JT Nails on Fillmore is such a place. "Feelmore Street" is normally not my scene, but one day I needed to get out of my Pac Hts. Mansion and was walking down lower Fillmore Street. Right when I was almost getting to the scary part of Fillmore (the flat part) I saw JT Nails. Up until this time I had been going to a place way over in Bernal (where I used to live with some lesbian dog-lovers before I sold the dotcom) to get my nails done but had been getting increasingly annoyed with the haul over there and my driver always had a hard time finding a parking place for the Maybach. So, in a rare moment of varying my excessive-but-common-among-the-ultra-wealthy OCD routines, I stopped into JT Nails. The aroma of nail polish and acrylic nail dust was intoxicating. Really. It was. I had to step outside again a couple times while I was waiting to grab a few gulps of fresh air. It is no wonder everyone working there has such a dreamy expression on their face. In any event, that day I received my first MAN-icure from JT Nails, which, incidentally is run by two sisters whose portraits and family photos adorn the walls of their modest, fumey shop. I requested a high-polish buff. I wanted my nails to look like little mirrors on the ends of my fingers. I knew it could be done. However, I was slightly disappointed with the results and, a few days later, *very* disappointed. Why? Because I had developed numerous mini-hangnails around my cuticles. A perfect MAN-icure will *stay* perfect for at least a week. Despite my disappointment, I stopped in there again because, as I had found out from visiting previous shops, it's all about finding the right manicurist. And I found her. Actually, I found two. I found one for my hands and one for my feetsters (the foot massage is unreal - her hand-strength is like the jaws-of-life!). Wow. This review is getting long and I've got some Web 2.0 parties to go to (yah, sucks being a VC - everyone wants you). Anyway, there are two manicurists at this shop that give top notch, superb, outstanding, simply unmatched MAN-icures and pedicures. I won't tell you their names because they are already very busy and these days a call must be made to tell them I am coming. I don't want to exacerbate the situation and have to start having my assistant call them to make an appointment days in advance. But, I do say, they simply rawk. Ok. **i hit post and lost my first review - this one may not be as good** anyhoodle - the nails? fine. the pedis? no complaints. the ladies? super nice and always remember me (even when i didn't go there for 5 years when i moved!). but what i want to yelp about is the 15 minutes of pure heaven you can purchase for a mere $10. yes - you can get an unassuming chair massage (in a regular chair, mind you) that will blow your mind. the lady who massages on mondays has some seriously magic hands. i wish i could go here every day!! i am not kidding - you must try this amazingly inexensive bit of relaxation and pampering when you just have 15 min and want a little treat. and wear a tank top for maximum pleasure. read more

all ya'll yelpers wondering what the ladies are gossiping about? they are talking about you!! just kidding. it's mostly gossip amongst themselves. i speak 3 languages and can stumble through another 2 so i could understand them. i got them laughing and entertained with some stories but i think they appreciated me asking about their stories. most people are so egocentric about talking about themselves to their hair stylists, we forget that these people do this to pay the rent and bills. they have some great personal stories about how they came to the states and their struggles here. i laughed so hard that the mangled english interpretations of their names sure, it's not the best quality job..... but for 25$ for mani-pedi?! i can't complain. i have ticklish feet so i couldn't help but giggle as one scrubbed my feet. she tried hard not to giggle because i was giggling. but the best part is that i really like them remembering your name and they use it often. makes me feel like "norm" at cheers even though it was my first time there. i felt like one of the regulars on any old friday. read more

I've been going to Dao at JT Nails on and off for several years now. She is always sweet and eager to please. For the price, they do a good job. One of the other employees was entertaining her client with stories of a customer who chooses interesting shapes for her bikini wax, including a heart. You can get a mani/pedi for $25 but if you don't need the full pedi with the foot soak, scrub, etc, you can get a toe polish change for $7 (they still file and cut your nails) and a mani for $9. Since I started cutting my own hair (and saving a ton of money in the process), I thought I should get my first manicure. I'd been a bit bothered that, since I'm right-handed, my right hand nails were always funkier than those on my left hand - know what I mean? So I happened upon this place in my neighborhood and have been happily going there every other week. The quality varies, depending on who you get, so I have started to make appointments with the ladies who have, in my opinion, done the best job. I recently tried this place and I was really happy with my pedicure and eyebrow wax. They don't use the spa chairs which I don't like to use any more after hearing about the yucky fungal infections you can get from them. The girl who did both my pedicure and wax was really friendly and did a fantastic job. I went to get my gels removed and a manicure 2 weeks ago. The lady did not file and buff my nails properly. They are rough and scuffed on the surface!! and then I got plenty of hang nails on all my fingers just after one day. I was in desperate need for a neighborhood NYC-style nail salon - cheap, quick, long-lasting and HOT TOWELS. A classmate recommended JT Nails as she had been going there for years and a friend's mom had been going there for over 10 years! Tina and the crew are the best, they are super nice, extremely accommodating and overall they do a terrific job. Overall experience has been great. Diane did my pedicure and Cindy did my manicure/massage. Although The ambiance isn't the best Cindy did an amazing job and was very accommodating to my requests. If you're the kind of person that carries your stress in your shoulders a simple 10 minute massage (by Cindy of course) is the best way to end your week. I tried this place twice after moving into the area. They are indeed friendly, ask your name.....but...I felt it was not nearly as clean as I would like ( I went to KT Nails on Polk before I moved) and they were a bit rough on my cuticles and the manicure did not last as long as usual. Maybe,they didnt clean off my nails with alcohol as carefully as they probably should have. They left the paper towel from the previous person on my table for me to put my hands on! The dont exfoliate your feet like KT or do any kind of massage of feet or hands.... I was so disappointed and am reluctant to try again. I will probably make the trek back to KT Nails. Only $25 for a mani-pedi? And better yet, I also got a gift certificate from a friend as a gift, so I walked in on a Saturday afternoon to get my nails done for free. The owner was polite and I was seated right away. They have a wide range of OPI nail polish, and I picked a dark shade of purple(my favorite color). I started going to JT to get gel manicures for my wedding. I wish it wasn't across town from me because I would go relgiously every couple few weeks. This review is for the eye brow waxing service: I am giving this place a one star for one reason. This place is UNSANITARY! We were running errands in the neighborhood and one of those errands consist of getting my sister's eye brows wax. Original plan was to go to my usual waxing lady, but since we were on a time crunch, we decided to go to JT's. They sat my sister down on one of those nice chairs. The lady took a pen filled with wax... sort of like a pen with a roller ball at the end of the tip. She applied the pen directly onto my sister's eye brows... That raised a red flag... because I do not know where that pen had been and I did not know if they always use the same pen on direct skin contact with other clients. I thought to myself, maybe they change the tip of the ball... BUT I WAS WRONG. When the lady was done with my sister's eyebrows, another worker took that same wax pen and used it on another client's eye brows. I was immediately grossed out. That pen was a community pen for all clients!!! *GROSS and UNSANITARY!* I do not know why this place gets five stars... I read the reviews proclaiming the excellent customer service, yes they're customer service may be great... but the place is unsanitary... that wax pen is scary. btw, my sister's eyebrows did not come out great, I was so grossed out by this place that I did not want them to fix it after they've asked if the eyebrows were ok... I don't get my nails done often because it usually chips off in a few days. My granddaughter and I went to JT Nails on Fillmore because it was nearby. Diane was terrific, friendly, and has been there for 15 years which says something not only about her but her employer. Four days later my nails look like I just walked out of the salon. I can't wait for the next time I need my nails done to go back to Diane. My granddaughter who is much more experienced than I and from NY said they used the products generously and put many layers and encouraged us to let everything dry for 30 minutes instead of rushing us out. read more

If you are looking for a friendly, customer service oriented place, this is not it! Do not be deceived by the phony friendliness of the operators, they are phony and fake. They put on insincere smiles and they will talk about you in Vietnamese (talking back and forth) while you are getting your manicures and pedicures done. They should give themselves a good look in the mirror as they give Asians a bad name! I would look for a manicure and pedicure elsewhere. Their prices are low for a reason because they use poor quality products and they do not sterilize their instruments. The San Francisco Department of Health should take a good look at the place. Randomly stopped in here on my way back home from work because I pass by it all the time and decided to get a mani/pedi. At first glance, you'd think "nothing special, simple looking, small, blah". Walk in and you feel like a million bucks...they ask you right away for your first name and make it a point to repeatedly say your name throughout the process, which is very good business etiquette and will remember you from then on. They have photos and xmas cards placed around the salon that were sent to them from several satisfied customers, so obviously they're doing something right. First place I've ever been to where my nails didn't chip within two days of getting them done. They lasted for more than two weeks and they're cheap and friendly. The staff is friendly, can get you in and out in a half-hour, and charge a VERY reasonable $25 for a mani/pedi combo. But at JT Nails I don't have to feel sorry for myself for being poor and not getting them done very often because they have great prices and always do a stellar job. Their pedicures last forever. The place is sparkling clean and the ladies are super sweet. They are usually pretty busy, especially on the weekends, but they have always managed to fit me in as a walk in. This place has prices I dont think could be beaten, so for those who want the job done, you have to be realistic. This isn't a luxrious place, so if you want "pampering" you need to look elsewhere. Since this place is ALWAYS packed, that tells you the patrons are happy to return. The prices are a big factor. I came here 2 x. The first time i came to get acrylic nails done (my first time EVER). I'm not the type who is girlish, but man, that owuld be my LAST time. They hurt. It ook about a month before I was able to remove them and they hurt. I had to do it for a special dinner. Their colors didn't impress me. If i do decide to return for a mani/pedi, i'd bring my own color. My first time here took forever, b/c it was 1-2 hours before closing and it was sooo packed. I was shuffled from one spot to another. The 2nd time I came was much better. There weren't too many people. This is because I came on a weekday and a little earlier i think to beat the crowd. This time i had my eyebrows waxed. Jennifer wasn't there (maybe no longer working there). The new lady did an ok job on shaping; however, my 2 brows weren't even. One brow had too much taken out. :( So i wasn't thrilled about that. But i will go back to try it again later. I noticed during my 1st visit there, some of the customers aren't very nice (downright rude) to the girls. I went in the other day and Judy did a manicure for me she was very thorough in trimming up my nails and cuticles the paint was done very well. I noticed in a few reviews people feeling uncomfortable about the ladies around speaking in another language. I did see that there however Judy was very friendly and a few of the other women were talking to their customers I think it really depends on how much you want to interact as well. For a cheap mani-pedi near Fillmore street, this is the place to go. However, there is always a long wait and they're never quite honest with you about how long the wait is. Most recently they told me I'd wait 10 minutes, and it was 35 minutes before I was even seated. That's kind of the price you pay for a $25 mani-pedi I guess. If you're willing to pay $45, Silk Salon on Franklin is a much better option. Lowlights: you're seated in office chairs and your feet are soaked in rubbermaid tubs. Highlights: mani-pedis include a quick massage of your hands and feet. They take walk-ins, but you might have to wait a while. They have a good selection of magazines. read more

This place offers a nail express, quick, don't expect to relax type service. I've been going there for three years and in all honesty their customer service is poor. Their nail work? Most of them are O.K. although a few times someone did a terrible job on my pedicure. I am quite picky with the shape so if you are like me it will be nerve racking. This places is dirty and smells like food. However, I so happy to have found Divisadero Nails, same prices but better services. They are very very precise about how you want them to file your nails and have the best systems when removing gel nail polish.
